WHY DOES DESIGN MATTER FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS?
The organizations’ performance rests upon the alignment of each of the components–the work, people, structure, culture– with all of the others. The tighter the fit...the greater the congruence...the higher the performance.
- Oliver Wyman Group
We believe that the design of the learning environment is a crucial part of the organizational alignment needed to create a high performance school. This is even more apparent in high need, urban contexts, where the stakes are raised and the existing environment can be an obstacle. We think that leaders of new school models, such as charter schools, have an incredible opportunity to create transformative spaces for learning and community
development. Thoughtful design has the ability to:
Reflect + facilitateCURRICULAR GOALS
Express + encourage SCHOOL CULTURE + SHARED VALUES
Welcome + enfranchise PARENTS + COMMUNITY
Maximize + align OPERATIONS + STRUCTURE
A central element of high performing organizations that is evident in these charter schools is the power of coherence.

PERSPECTIVES CHARTER SCHOOLCHICAGO, ILLINOIS
The founders of the Perspectives Charter School coined the motto “a disciplined life” to communicate their mission for an ideal school environment. Perkins+Will’s design of their new facility integrates the philosophy of the disciplined life with a program-specific design response resulting in an unconventional school design. Quite literally the 26 principles of “a disciplined life” (each falling in the categories of self preception, communitcation, and productivity) echo in the flexible community core of the building off the verdant facades. The design operates in a cohesive range of scales from how and where the building is sited to the fine detail of the interior signage. All of these elements come together for the expressed purpose of advancing the school’s educational mission beyond standard expectations.
Saturated with color the Perspectives library uplifts, inspiring students to “seek wisdom.”Interaction and socialization among the students and the staff of the school are integral to the Perspectives way of learning. Small group spaces and other areas allow for a variety of uses and interactions beyond those that occur in the classroom.

PALISADES CHARTER HIGH SCHOOLPACIFIC PALISADES, CA
Charter school teachers are constantly negotiating demanding academic standards, the realities of remediation, and innovating teaching practices. This academic naviagtion along with operational efficiency, durability, and flexibility make charter schools spaces full of interesting design challenges. We believe that high performance classrooms must evolve with students and shift with teaching goals seamlessly.
Palisades Charter High School is a nonprofit charter school serving approximately 2,800 students. Perkins+Will was selected to develop a master plan that will maximize the use of existing space, modernize the existing facilities, outline reconstruction and new construction projects for needed new facilities, and create a maintenance plan that will result in an upgraded, efficient campus for the 21st century. During the master planning process, the team strategized how to utilize the strengths of the existing campus by studying the potential for agile and adaptive Professional Learning communities and Small Learning Communities. New additions to the campus will include new laboratories, a performing arts center, athletic facilities and classrooms.

MOTT HAVEN ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOLTHE NEW YORK FOUNDLING HOSPITALBRONX, NY
Charter schools take their strength from their agility and ability to form diverse, mutually beneficial community partnerships. These partnerships buttress the typical educational offerings and provide the academic, extracurricular, health, and family supports that are crucial to wholesale community change. We know that partnerships add value, thus we think about them broadly, explore financing options creatively, and build in flexibility for future use.
The Manhattan-based New York Foundling is a 137-year-old family services agency that serves as the City’s second-largest foster home provider and the third-largest child welfare agency. As an extension of The Foundling mission, the new Mott Haven Academy Charter School will address the academic achievement gap that plagues children in the child welfare system. The school, to be located on a derelict site in the South Bronx, will provide schooling for 334 students. The school will also house all of the Foundling’s Bronx Community Services in an integrated facility that maximizes its potential as a community catalyst and support.
The project’s design grew out of the guiding principle that the building should be the physical manifestation of the mission of the New York Foundling. The design for the building addresses public health on three separate levels: for the occupants, through indoor environmental quality; for the community, as a resource and good steward; and for the world, as a model for the positive effect sustainable design can have on public health and leadership.

innovationSUSTAINABLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
SPROUT SPACEFLEXIBLE MODULAR CLASSROOMS, NATIONWIDE
Schools are currently facing a lot of challenges, including budget shortfalls, outdated facilities, and population fluctuations. These difficulties force schools into a temporary fix instead of a permanent solution.
Perkins+Will K12 Education practice has developed Sprout Space, an award winning, high-high performance, modular classroom building designed specifically for growing schools and communities. As an example of our commitment to improve educational facilities on a national basis, we created a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to the 300,000 existing classroom trailers serving over 8 million students in the United States today. Sprout Spaces are healthy, flexible, and sustainable learning environments that are available on a national basis.
The basic requirements for a classroom include: natural daylight, good indoor air quality, adequate space, proper temperature control, and good acoustics. This challenge inspired Perkins+Will, a leader in education design, to give schools an alternative through their award winning design of Sprout Space™.

The long-range success of any education project is due as much to the process as the final product. The process is vital because it sets the tone and foundation for addressing the needs of the users, finding economical and creative solutions based on those needs, and gaining the trust of the school community.
From day one, our team works closely with the client to tailor a project process that best supports their educational goals. We have expe-rience working with clients during all phases of a school construction project, including facilitating community meetings, developing facility planning options, creating a building program and designing building additions, renovations and new school facilities.
Our dedication to communicating and listening to the client, combined with our trademark pro-cess, results in a custom educational environ-ment designed to facilitate learning, create com-munity, and support the beliefs and ideals that define excellence in education.

Demands for improved student performance, concerns about student health and a continu-ing need for cost-effective facilities have focused our attention on an integrated design approach known as green building. Sometimes referred to as sustainable design, high performance design, or healthy design, green building is an acknowl-edgement of the substantial impact of buildings on human health, the learning environment, and on the search for building solutions that contribute to maintaining our ecosystem.
With over 1000 LEED® Accredited Profession-als (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) firm-wide, Perkins+Will is at the forefront of sustainable design, continuing our commitment to improving learning environments through our initiative to incorporate green building techniques into every project we undertake. Integrating green building techniques into school design can result in a demonstrated improvement in student perfor-mance, increased teacher satisfaction, reduced operating costs, and a healthier indoor environ-ment.
It is important to understand that green buildings do not necessarily cost any more to design or build than conventional buildings. Green build-ing involves a range of choices that can be eval-uated against project criteria. Some strategies, like the use of recycled materials or native plant landscaping, cost the same or less than conven-tional choices.
