Welcome to Stockport School
At Stockport school our moto which is in Latin is “Velis et Remis” which means “with sails and
oars”. It tells us that we need to put in effort in order to achieve our best. At Stockport
school we will give you support so you can do this to the best of your ability.
Key values
We have some key words that are part of learning in our school. You will see these words on
the main staircase, and they are all important skills for teaching and learning.
Word Meaning
Inspire Fill with the need to do something
Respect To be thoughtful of the feelings of others
Collaborate Working together
Aspire Working towards achieving something
Dedicate Put in effort to do a task
Our school likes to show students when they are doing well by awarding achievement points
these can be earnt by all kinds of positive behaviour such as: effort/trying hard, helping
others, attendance/being on time, uniform and many more. Your achievement points add up
and you could get some rewards such as: badges, certificates, early lunch passes and canteen
credits. The achievement points then get converted to House points.
Our Houses
All our forms are named after famous artists. The form you are in will tell you what house you
will belong to.
RED House = Klee and Van Gough
BLUE House = Escher and Picasso
GREEN House = Da Vinci and Riley
YELLOW House = Goldsworthy and Lowry
ORANGE House = Monet and Turner

Changes
Starting Secondary school is a very big change in your life. It is an important part of growing
up. You may feel a bit scared or worried, but you are not the only person feeling this way. Many
children feel the same. You will be in the same position as many other people in your year group.
If you have a worry about school, it is best to try and tell someone. People you could ask are:
Parent/carer
Older brother/sister
Form tutor
Teacher
Head of year/Pastoral manager
Teaching assistant
Many things will be different from your Primary school this is mainly because our school is
much bigger and has more students and teachers. Some examples are; different subjects,
moving round the school for lessons, uniform and timetables. You will soon get used to the
changes and getting around school. You will meet lots of new people and soon make some lovely
new friends.
Draw a picture or write some words to describe how you are feeling. You could use an emoji
such as: 😐👍😢😊😃
How I feel about starting my new school

What You Need To Bring To School Every Day
You should bring a school bag with you to
school every day. This is the easiest way to
carry all the equipment you need for the
day.
In your school bag you should have
Planner - Your planner should always be
kept with you to record homework and
to pass messages between home and
school
Reading book
Scientific calculator
Any equipment needed for lessons that
day such as PE kit and homework.
The best way to carry pens and pencils is in
a pencil case. This way all your equipment
stays together in one place
In your pencil case you should have
2/3 pens black or blue
Pencils
Ruler
Eraser
Some other things which may be useful are
Pencil sharpener
Highlighters or coloured pens

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND
One of the most challenging things about high school is getting to know your way around. It
may seem very big and busy. Don’t worry about this everyone understands that getting to
know your way around school can take time. If you don’t know where to go just ask an adult
or another student and they will be happy to direct you or take you to where you need to be.
Our school is made up of four main areas:
Main Building ground floor (downstairs)
Main building first floor (upstairs)
J Block (Canteen/English)
M block (Sport, Media History, RS)
Yellow areas = Important areas to get to know for year 7/SEN

LRC (Learning Resource Centre)
Our LRC is in the main building (downstairs) We
have 23 computers for students to do research
and homework. We have a quiet area for reading.
A member of staff is always on hand to help you.
The LRC is open from 8.15am -4.30pm (4pm on
Friday.) You can use the LRC at break, lunch and
for an hour after school. Help with homework is
available after school.
Students can borrow books from our library and
are encouraged to.

Dining Areas And Food
Another big difference from primary school will be food. Lunchtime is at 1.20pm at the
beginning of year 7 you are usually allowed to go to lunch 10mins earlier than everyone else.
Your teacher will tell you when it is lunchtime.
Our school does not take cash for food. We have a system called Wisepay which your
parent/carers can put money onto for you to buy food using your thumb print which is usually
taken on induction day or first day of school. You can also top up your Wisepay with cash on a
machine which is outside the main canteen
At Stockport school we have a few places you can buy food if you wish. We offer a wide
range of food choices; some examples are given below. All areas are in J block these are:
Main dining room/canteen. Open Before school, break and lunchtime.
Gym deli bar (Lake Street Gym.) Open some lunchtimes.
Sandwich bar. Open at Lunchtime.
The Pod. Open at break and Lunchtime.
You are also very welcome to bring a packed lunch from home.
