In 1861, Joseph Thompson, a cotton merchant employing over 600 people occupied the impressive residence with his wife Mary, their two children and servants. The quality, prestige and setting

of his home reflected his status and standing in a period when Lancashire completely dominated the world market in textiles. A decade later Robert Jervis, another successful merchant, was master of Southbank, taking up residence with his wife Emily

and four children.

Delamer Lodge was built after Southbank House but shares its high historic value as the grand building was constructed as part of the growing development of the area and retains most of its

The 1881 census records that it was occupied by Thomas Briggs Somer, a ‘Gentleman’, along with his wife, their two children and
