Fading of the titles -

o This creates mystery, not knowing of what is coming and going.

o The fading relates to the title Insomnia (meaning cant sleep), almost as if you were drifting to sleep but waken by the second title.

o The black and white contrast (bad and good) helps make the words stand out, which may give a hint as to what happens later.

Blood stains (Title) -

o The blood makes ‘fear of the unknown’ very prominent, as we don’t know were its coming from, building great suspense.

o The white title makes the blood stand out drawing the viewers eyes to it, making it an important aspect of the movie.

Glacier -

o This is a very isolated scene, a place of loneliness; making the viewer uncomfortable just as a psycho thriller should. Messing with the mind.

o There are muted colours, very bleak; helping to set the mood of the movie.

Mirrored/Over the shoulder –

o As its through the mirror the viewer will not know what's real and what's not, creating a sense of mystery.

o As you are facing there back, you don’t get an insight to what they are doing. Only there actions but not facial emotions creating a sense of secrecy and mystery.

Eyes –

o The viewer is given an extreme close up shot of the eyes but no the whole face, hiding the emotions, creating suspense as expected in the thriller genre.

o You also get an insight into what the character looks like enhancing there features. There are visible signs of age from the wrinkles making this person someone of the older generation.

Images –

o This is also an extreme close up, creating suspense and giving greater detail of what is going on.

o The image is presumably of a women. Beaten and wounded most likely murder, which creates a sense of violence typical in a thriller.

Newspaper –

o The headline gives a hint as to what the movie is about. Its especially important as it is something that has made the news making it very serious, but still a mystery as we are only given the title of the news and not the whole story. Fitting in the category of secrecy.

Flying plane/Fog –

o The fog has a link to the title Insomnia (meaning cant sleep). When you are tired your mind becomes foggy and everything is not as clear as it should be. This has great purpose as it messes with the mind.

o The fog creates great mystery as you don’t have great understanding of what is within it, creating fear and suspense.

o The plane is also featured in a high angle shot (looking down). This belittles the plane making it significant to the overall view.
