Software-as-a-service (SaaS)

q SaaS is a new modelof how software is delivered.

q SaaS "on-demand software," is a software delivery model in which software and itsassociated data are hosted centrally (typically in the (Internet) cloud) and are typicallyaccessed by users using a thin client, normally using a web browserover theInternet.

q SaaS refers to software that is accessed via a web browser and is paidon a subscription

basis (monthly or yearly). Different from the traditional model where a customer buys a license tosoftware and assumes ownership for its maintenance and installation, SaaS presents significant advantages to thecustomer.

q SaaS is faster and a cost effective way to getting implemented. There are no hardware,implementation or acquisition costs involved to run the application from the customer'sside. It's the responsibility of the SaaS vendor (us) to manage and run the application

with utmost security, performance and reliability.

q Since customers pay a subscription, they have immediate access to the new features andfunctionality. Unlike traditional softwares where upgrades would happen once a year or once in 6 months (with the vendorcoming to your office with a CD), the SaaS vendor continuously pushes new updates, fixes to the application, which is immediatelyaccessible by the customer. This reduces the length of time it takes a customer to recognize value from the software .

q SaaS can be used by Windows, Linux, or Mac users, providing trueplatformindependence over the Internet

History

SAP announced SAP Business ByDesign on 19 September 2007 during anevent in New York.

The solution was known under the code name "A1S" before.

In 2003 exactly 10 years after R/3 was introduced SAP decided to go for new

architecture, which was called Ether and then later Enterprise SOA. Thefirst year was spent figuring out how to do enterprise SOA.

SAP spent four years in R&D and developing Business ByDesign as a newfoundation for SAPs ERP software.

The concept involves Cloud Computing which incorporates Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) that have the common theme of reliance on the Internet forsatisfying the computing needs of the users.
