1 AboutEBFandtheInsider’sGuideTheEnergyBusinessandFinancedegreeprogram,offeredthroughtheJohnandWillieLeoneFamilyDepartmentofEnergyandMineralEngineeringatPennState,isauniquedegreeprogramdesignedtotrainstudentsforcareersinenergyorrelatedindustries.TheGeneralOptionprovidesstudentswithbroadtraininginbusinessandeconomicsasrelevanttoenergyproduction,consumptionanddelivery.Studentsareexpectedtosupplementthistrainingwithanapprovedminor,concurrentmajor,ortermabroadexperience,dependingontheirpersonalandcareerinterests.TheGeneralOptionisdesignedforbreadthoftraining.Studentsinterestedinahighlyfocusedenergy-relateddegreeprogramshouldconsidertheEnergyLandManagementOptionratherthantheGeneralOption.MoreinformationontheEnergyLandManagementOptionisavailableathttp://www.eme.psu.edu/ebf/landmanagement-option.WhiletheEBFGeneralOptioncoversmanyoftheessentialsthatstudentswillfindinconventionaleconomicsorbusinessprograms,ourrequirementsaremuchmoredifficultthaneither.Inparticular,theEBFprogramexpectsalevelofcomfortwithmathematical,statisticalandquantitativethinkingthatishigherthanexpectationsineconomicsorbusiness.TheEBFInsider’sGuideisdesignedtoprovidestudentsintheGeneralOptionoftheEnergyBusinessandFinanceprogramatPennStatewithdetailedinformationonprogramrequirements,coursesavailabletostudentsinthemajor,andpathwaystograduation.Itexpandsuponinformationavailablethroughtwoonlineresources:

TheEBFmajorhasanumberofaspectsthatsomestudentsfindcomplicated.TheInsider’sGuideisdesignedtoprovideaclearexplanationofprogramrequirementsandthecoursesthatmakeuptheEBFmajor.Tominimizepainandconfusion,allEBFGeneralOptionstudentsareurgedtoreadthisdocumentcarefullyandtotaketwoadditionalsteps.

2 WhatisNewintheEBFGeneralOption?

2.1 PrerequisitesforEBFCoursesStartingwiththefall2016term,wehavechangedsomeprerequisitesfor400-levelEBFcourses,asfollows:

• EBF401requiresEBF200,EBF301,EME460and3creditsofstatistics.• EBF473requiresEBF200,EBF301,MATH140and141and3creditsof

statistics.• EBF483requiresEBF200,EBF301,MATH140and3creditsofstatistics.• EBF484requiresEBF200,EBF301,MATH140and3creditsofstatistics.

StudentswillneedtoplanverycarefullytogetEBF200,EBF301andstatisticscompletedasearlyintheircareersaspossible.NotealsothatEBF473nowrequiresMATH141(notjustMATH140)!

2.2 ChangesinEBFCourseOfferingsStudentsshouldnotethefollowingchangesinEBFcoursesbeingofferedduringthe2016/17academicyear.

• EBF401willnotbeofferedinspring2017.• EBF472willbeofferedonlyinspring2017andwillnotbeofferedfall2016.• Dr.Kleitisofferinganewcourseinfall2016,EBF497,whichdealswith

energylandcontractingissues.WhilemostrelevanttostudentsintheLandManagementOption,studentsintheGeneralOptionmaytakethiscourseinplaceofEBF304(notethatEBF304usedtobecalledEBF304W).

• Ifallgoeswell,weplantostartofferingEBF483(electricitymarkets)onlineoverthesummer,startinginsummer2017.

2.3 Three-AttemptCoursePolicyArecentchangeinPennStatepolicyisthatstudentsmaynotattemptaPennStateclassmorethanthreetimes,regardlessofthecampusatwhichthecourseistaken(UniversityPark,CommonwealthCampusesorWorldCampus).An“attempt”isdefinedasreceivingagradeorlatedroppingthecourse.CoursestakeninasemesterwhenastudentwithdrawsfromtheUniversityorPennStateequivalentcoursestakenatotheruniversitiesarenotcountedas“attempts.”Studentsshouldbeawarethatthispolicyisretroactive,meaningthatifyouattemptedacoursethreetimesbeforethepolicywentintoplace,youmaynotsignupforthatcourseagain!Ifyouareinasituationwhereyouhaveattemptedarequiredclass(suchasMATH141)threetimeswithoutpassing,thenyoubasicallyhaveafewoptions:

• Youmaypetitiontotaketheclassafourthtime.TheprocessofpetitioningstartswithavisittotheEMEorEMSadvisors(AlishaSimonortheRyanFamilyStudentCenter).DonotseeyourfacultyadvisortoaskaboutpetitionsforexceptionstotheThree-Attemptpolicy.Studentsmustmeetcertaincriteriatohaveapetitionapproved;itisnotautomatic.

• YoumaytakeanequivalentclassatanotheruniversityandhavethecreditstransfertoPennState.

• YoumaylookforalternativemajorsbesidesEBF.

3 RequirementsfortheEBFGeneralOptionThissectiondetailstherequirementsfortheEBFGeneralOption.ItlargelyrepeatsmaterialavailablefromtheUniversityBulletin,butwithsomeadditionalinformation.

3.1 EntrytotheMajorStudentsmustcompleteallofthefollowingrequirementstoentertheEBFGeneralOption:

3.2 OverviewofEBFGeneralOptionRequirementsTheEBFGeneralOptionrequirementsconsistofasetofcourseworkandsupplementarytrainingaimedatcomplementingthemajorcoursework.

3.2.1 CourseworkRequirementsWedividecourseworkfortheEBFGeneralOptionintocoreEBFcourses,requiredsupportingcourses,andelectives.CoreEBFCourses:EBF200,EBF301,EBF304,EBF401,EME460,EBF483or484,andEBF473.Thesecoursesprovidethebusinessandeconomicsfoundationforcareersintheenergyindustries.AgradeofCorhigherisrequiredforallcoreEBFcourseswiththeexceptionofEBF473.RequiredSupportingCourses:Mathematics:MATH140and141.AgradeofCorhigherisrequiredforeachofMATH140and141.TheEBFprogramtakesthisrequirementveryseriously.WewillnotacceptMATH110/111inplaceofMATH140/141.Evenifyouhavetakenhigher-levelmath,youstillneedtopassMATH140/141withagradeofCorhigherineach.Statistics:STAT301,401orEBF472.AgradeofCorhigherisrequired.ComputerProgramming:CMPSC101,CMPSC200,CMPSC201,orCMPSC202.Economics:ECON102,ECON104,ECON302.AgradeofCorhigherisrequiredforECON102andECON302.Business:ACCTG211,BLAW243(orBA241andBA242),IB303,RM302.AgradeofCorhigherisrequiredforRM302.English:ENGL15orENGL30,ENGL202CorENGL202D.Electives

3.2.2 SupplementaryTrainingandExperienceInadditiontothecourseworkrequirements,allEBFGeneralOptionstudentsarerequiredtoattainoneofthefollowing:

• Aconcurrentminorfromanapprovedlist,availableathttp://bulletins.psu.edu/undergrad/programs/baccalaureate/E/EBFandalsoontheRecommendedAcademicPlanswebsite,https://rap.psu.edu/recommended-academic-plan-bs-energy-business-and-finance-general-option-ebf-gen-minor-university.AdditionalinformationonapprovedminorsisalsoprovidedinSection5ofthisInsider’sGuide.

• Aconcurrentmajorinanysubject;• A15-credittermabroadprogramapprovedbytheprogramchairforEBF;• AminorinAsianStudiescombinedwithanapprovedsummertermabroad

experience.Studentswishingtofillthisrequirementusingaminorshouldbeawareoftwothings.

1. Itisthestudent’sresponsibility,nottheresponsibilityoftheEMEDepartmentoradvisors,toensurethatminorrequirementshavebeenmetpriortograduation.Beforestudentsarecertifiedforgraduation,theEBFprogramchairandEMEstaffwillcheckdegreeauditstoensurethatminorshavebeencompleted.Thedepartmentwillnotcertifystudentstograduateifminorrequirementshavenotbeencompleted.

2. AnystudentwantingtotakeaminornotontheapprovedlistshouldconsultwiththeEBFprogramchairwellinadvanceofstartingtotakecourseworkintheminor.Itistheprogramchair’sresponsibility,nottheresponsibilityofindividualfacultyoracademicadvisors,toapproveminorsthatarenotalreadyontheapprovedlist.Theprogramchairwillnotapproveminorsjustbecausealloftherequirementsfortheminorhavebeenfulfilled!Inparticular,studentsshouldbeawarethataminorinEconomicsorBusinessAdministrationcannotbeusedtofillthisEBFrequirement.

StudentsconsideringusingatermabroadexperiencetofillthisrequirementshouldlookattheEBFStudyAbroadGuide(postedontheEBFwebsite)andwillneedtoconsultwiththeirfacultyadvisorortheEBFprogramchairtodiscusstheappropriatenessofprogramsandcoursework.StudentstakingtermabroadprogramstomeettheEBFGeneralOptionrequirementareexpectedtotakeatleast12creditsofcourseworkrelevanttotheEBFprogram(i.e.,thatwouldfilltheEBF

coreorelectiverequirements,asopposedtogeneraleducationrequirements).Coursestakenduringthetermabroadexperiencecancoverspecificprogramrequirements.Forexample,astudentwhotakestheequivalentofIntermediateMicroeconomics(ECON302)duringatermabroadprogramwouldnotberequiredtotakeECON302atPennState.Pleasespeakwithyourfacultyadvisorconcerningtheuseofterm-abroadcoursestocoverspecificEBFprogramrequirements.StudentswishingtotakeanAsianStudiesminorinconjunctionwiththesummertermabroadexperiencearestronglyencouragedtoapplytotheDalianUniversityofTechnologysummerprograminChina.Formoreinformationseehttp://www.eme.psu.edu/ebf/dalianorcontactProf.AndrewKleit(coordinatorfortheDalianprogram).

3.3 AnImportantNoteonMathRequirementsTheEBFGeneralOptionrequirescompletionofbothMATH140andMATH141,withagradeofCorhigherineach.TheEBFprogramtakesthemathrequirementveryseriously.Ourexperiencehasbeenthatastudent’sgradeincalculusisoneofthebestpredictorsofsuccessintheEBFmajor.Weurgestudentstofulfillthemathematicsrequirementasearlyintheircareersaspossible.Themathematicsrequirementsforthemajorwillnotbewaived!ThismeansthatstudentsintheEBFGeneralOptionneedtotakeMATH140and141(oradirectequivalentfromanotherinstitution)andtoearnagradeofCorhigherinbothcourses.Inparticular,theprogramwillnolongeracceptMATH110inplaceofMATH140forentrancetomajorunderanycircumstances.StudentswhowereacceptedintotheprograminprioryearswithMATH110inplaceofMATH140shouldbeawarethatthemathdepartmentmaybecomemorestringentaboutprerequisites,meaningthatMATH140willneedtobetakenpriortoMATH141.TheEBFprogramcannotwaivethisprerequisitesincethatiscontrolledbythemathdepartment.StudentswhoweregrantedentrancetotheEBFmajorwithMATH110andaregrantedadmissiontoMATH141bythemathdepartmentmaypetitiontohaveMATH140waivedunderthefollowingcircumstances:

1. AgradeofCorhigherisearnedinMATH141.2. AgradeofBorhigherisearnedinMATH110(ThismeansthatagradeofB-

isnotsufficient).3. Achievedascoreof76%orhigherontheALEKSexam.

3.4 CommonCourseSubstitutionsManyEBFstudentsfillsomeoftheirprogramrequirementswithcoursestakenatotherinstitutions,orinsomecaseswithotherPennStatecoursesbesidesthoselistedinthecurriculum.Thereisathree-stepprocessforapprovingcoursesubstitutions:

1. Havethesubstitutionapprovedinwritingbyyourfacultyadvisorortheprogramchair.

2. Oncethesubstitutecourseappearsonyourdegreeaudit,filloutapetitionform(availablein110HoslerorintheRyanFamilyStudentCenter)andbringittoyouradvisortosign.

3. Placethecompletedpetitionformwithsupportingdocumentation(writtenapprovalsforthesubstitutionandtranscriptsfromotherinstitutionswhereappropriate)inDr.Blumsack’smailboxin110Hosler.

IfyoutakeacourseatanotheruniversitythatPennStaterecognizesasequivalenttooneofitsowncourses(youcanfindoutwhetherthisisthecasethroughLionPATH),thenyoudon’tneedtogothroughthecoursesubstitutionapprovalprocessbutyoudoneedtomakesurethatthetranscriptissenttothePennStateAdmissionsOffice.HerearesomeofthemorecommoncoursesubstitutionsusedbyEBFstudents:

• EitherEBF483orEBF484maycounttomeetcoreEBFrequirements.Ifastudenttakes(andpasses)both,onemaybeusedtofilltheadvancedelectiverequirement.StudentsareencouragedtotakebothEBF483and484butarenotrequiredto.

• VirtuallyanyintroductoryaccountingcoursefromacommunitycollegeorotheruniversitymaybeusedtomeettheACCTG211requirement.Manyintroductoryaccountingcoursesatotheruniversitiesare3-creditcourses,whereasACCTG211isa4-creditcourse.WewillwaivetheextracreditoftheACCTG211requirementforstudentstakingintroductoryaccountingatotheruniversities,thoughstudentswillstillneedtomeettherequirementof120creditsforgraduation.

• BA241andBA242maybetakeninplaceofBLAW243orBA243.• Studentsmaymeetthemathematicsrequirementsusingcalculuscourses

takenatcommunitycollegesorotheruniversities.YouwillneedtobesurethatthesubstitutecourseisaclosematchforMATH140or141.Inparticular,substitutecoursesshoulddemonstratetheuseoftrigonometricderivatives(whichareusedinMATH140and141butnotinMATH110).Studentsshouldbeawarethattheprogramchairwillbeverystringentinenforcingthisrequirement.Wedonotrequirethatasubstitutecalculuscoursetakenatanotheruniversitybea4-creditcourse.3-creditcalculuscoursesareacceptable,aslongastheyaretaughtattherightlevelandcoververysimilarmaterial.

• Studentsmaymeetthestatisticsrequirementusingacoursetakenatacommunitycollegeoranotheruniversity.EBFrequiresacalculus-basedstatisticscourse,andthisrequirementextendstoanysubstitutestatisticscourse.Theprogramchairwillnotapproveanysubstitutestatisticscoursethatdoesnothavecalculusasapre-requisite.

• EquivalentcoursesforECON102,ECON104andECON302canbefoundatmanyotheruniversities.

• StudentsmayelecttotakeacomputersciencecoursefromanotheruniversityoroneatPennStateotherthanthoselistedinthedegreerequirements.EBFrequiresacourseinaprogramminglanguage(e.g.,C++,Python,Matlab).Coursesinwordprocessingorspreadsheetmanagement(e.g.,Excel)orcoursesinwebdesign(HTML),forexample,donotmeetthisrequirement.

• FIN301orFIN305canbeusedinplaceofEBF401.TheSmealCollegeplacessomecontrolsonthesecoursesduringtheacademicyearbutsectionsareavailableoverthesummer,atsomebranchcampusesorthroughtheWorldCampus.CorporatefinancecoursesfromotheruniversitiesmaybeacceptablesubstitutesforEBF401butmustcoververysimilarmaterialandhaveastatisticsprerequisite.StudentsshouldbeawarethatBA301isnotanacceptablesubstituteforEBF401.

3.5 CreditforSummerInternshipsSomestudentswishtogetcreditforsummerinternships.Advancedstudentsinthegeneraloption(risingjuniorsorhigher)canmeettheir3-creditadvancedelectiverequirementusingaqualifiedinternship.Studentswishingtotakethisoptionmustmeetthefollowingrequirements:

1. Entrancetothemajorpriortothestartoftheinternship;2. Completionofatleastfoursemestersofuniversitycourseworkpriortothe

startoftheinternship;3. CompletionofEBF200andEBF301,withgradesofCorhigherineach.

Thereisafour-stepprocessforgettinginternshipcredit:

1. AninternshipthatclearlybuildsuponandcomplementstheEBFcurriculum(justworkingforanenergycompanyisnotsufficient–qualifyinginternshipswillutilizeindustryoranalyticskillsdevelopedthroughcourseworkorwillbuilduponastudent’sanalytictoolsinameaningfulway);

2. YoumustgetpermissionofyourfacultyadvisorbyJune1oftherelevantyear(muchearlierifpossible,sincemanyfacultytravelalotoverthesummer);

3. YouneedtosignupforasectionofENNEC496inthefallterm(youradvisorcanhelpwiththis);

4. Youneedtowritea20-pagepaperdescribingyourinternship,tobeevaluatedbyyouradvisor.

3.6 SummerCourseworkAnumberofEBFGeneralOptionrequirementscanbemetbytakingsummercourses,eitheratUniversityPark,onlineorthroughotherinstitutions.SomeEBF
