Eau Rouge. You hear about it. You see it onTV, but you dont know what it feels like froma speeding car. Its quite an amazing feeling,said Stefano Coletti. When you arrive downthe straight and you have to go up that hill,

theres a lot of G force and a lot of compression.It produces a feeling in the car you dont haveanywhere else. It squishes you against theseat!Felipe Nasr agreed: Its a unique place.You cannot know what to expect until you goover it for the rst time.Sam Bird conrmed:

For sure its the most roller-coaster ridecorner on the calendar. The fact the approachis downhill you can see it looming large in yourface. Youre coming towards this massive risewith a corner in the middle of it and you know

youre going to take it at out. Once youreused to it, its an easy at out but still the rst

time of the weekend you do it at out theresa bit of a Woah factor.

Felipe added: You have to take it at-out tomake time because after it you have such along straight and you can make a lot of timeif youre a little bit braver than the others.But you dont see much! Up to halfway you

dont know where youre going to end. Itswhen youre at the top that you see whereyou land.A shared feeling by Stefano: Youjust do it blind. When you turn and arrive atthe top, you dont see anything. You dontknow what to expect, especially in the wet.

You just look at the trees to see whereyoure going. Sam concluded: There areno reference points because you cant seethrough the corner. You just have to trustyour judgement and placing of the car. If you

lose the car there its very hard to correctit. You have to pay respect to this cornerbecause it can bite. And when it bites, itreally bites!

CLASSIFICATIONS

The ve-way race to the GP2 crown wentup a notch again last weekend in Spa-Francorchamps after Sam Bird and JamesCalado both closed the gap to Stefano Coletti,

Felipe Nasr and Fabio Leimer. The ve menare now just twenty-four points apart withSeries leader Coletti having not scored one

single point since the Nrburgring FeatureRace bringing his total of pointless race to

seven the highest of all ve title contenders.Both Leimer and Bird have failed to score sixtimes, Calado four times and Nasr only twice.The Brazilians consistency compensates forthe fact that he has yet to win a race.

Coletti still holds the record of this seasonspodium nishes (seven). Calado is secondwith ve rostrums. The other three driversall register four, but Birds are all wins. The

Brit records the most wins this seasonso far. Leimer, Bird and Coletti have onepole position each, the Swiss recording

three front row starts whilst Calados bestqualifying result is P2 and Nasrs P3 (ve

times). There are now six races left in theseason, three qualifying chances to nabextra points and glory until it comes downto the wire in Abu Dhabi.

While most of us were shamelessly lying on abeach somewhere working on our summer tan,

the GP2 drivers chose to keep the pressure onand work on their physical form instead to be

ready for the challenge that is Spa. Thats what

Alexander Rossi and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs didnotably joining a training camp organised by Pro

Performance at Bisham Abbey at the EnglishInstitute of Sport where the national Olympics

teams train. I would have rather enjoyed some

beach time back home, but it was quite good totrain in such a facility, said Alexander. It was

cool because you can train with other driversotherwise its a very individual thing. You get to

be very competitive with each other which made

the training more interesting.

Sports Performance consultant Andy Wellfare

who follows Alexander at the track during theseason was one of the trainers at that camp: It

was four full days of training with also differentworkshops on nutrition and psychology. Its

easy to go away for four weeks and lose that

little bit of a competitive edge. Having all thedrivers together, they really competed against

each other. They kept that little bit of edge aboutthem.

Alexander added: On top of our regular gymtraining, we had group sport activities like

football or tennis. That part was nice because

its surprising the amount of training you getwithout realising it because youre having fun.

Our days ran from 8am till 6pm. Thats intense.It kind of shocks your body and your system to

go into a place where youre completely focusedon bettering yourself. Id say you get a spike

out of that. Andy concluded: We did a lot of

grip strength work, leg strength work, and someexercises for the neck obviously. Whenever they

come to the gym, we have specic machinesto work on. But this time, we tried to make the

training as general as possible. As much we want

to keep things driver-related, we also appreciatethat they do need to have a break so we try to

give them that rest from driving whilst still doingdriver-related training if that makes sense. But

you know, some of the seasons toughest races

are coming up: you cannot let the drivers losetheir good form!

behind Coletti in the driversstandings. Can he repeat his

good form in Italy in two weeksand snatch the lead from the

Monegasque driver?

podium enjoying his success. Heis now within reaching distanceof the lead of the Series. Never

Romain Grosjean arrived at Spa-Francorchamps with a commanding 25 pointlead in the championship over Giedo van derGarde, but if he was taking the title for granted

he hid it well, telling anyone who asked thatnothing was done, and all he was concentratingon was going for pole, having only one in hisCV so far in the season.

The Frenchman started the weekend well,claiming the top spot in free practice justbefore the rain came down halfway through

the session, but with the rain continuing inqualifying Grosjean struggled to get a clearlap as the track improved later in the session,nishing 8th behind poleman Christian Vietoris,

which improved one spot when Charles Picwas pushed to the back after running out offuel.

Grosjean needed to nish two points ahead ofvan der Garde to claim the title and, with the

Dutchman three spots behind him on the grid,it looked like the Frenchman had one hand onthe trophy ahead of the feature race. His grip

on it tightened at the start when van der Gardewas pushed wide at the rst corner, spinningand clipping the barriers as he fell to the backof the eld, while up front Grosjeans usualstrong start saw him head to Eau Rouge in P3.

Another downpour hit mid-race, and anextended safety car period after a number ofresultant accidents had his heart rate up, whichwas pushed further into the red by challengesfrom Marcus Ericsson and Luca Filippi whenthe race restarted, but it only served to make

the result sweeter: Grosjean nished third,behind Vietoris and Jules Bianchi, to writehimself into the history books as the 2011 GP2champion.

If Lewis Hamilton wasunhappy with his car at Spa-

Francorchamps, you couldnt tell fromhis appearance on Saturday: being thelast man across the drying line in a rainaffected qualifying session helped, butpole position against the odds wasreason enough to be cheerful. Sundayshowed that the pace wasnt there toght Vettel or Alonso, so a podiumwas the most he could achieve:against that teammate Nico Rosbergwas the rst man to show what couldhappen in qualy, albeit he was too farup the road and had to make do withP4, a position he held well in the racedespite pressure for most of the racefrom Webber.

Sergio Prez had a similar problem:being on track too soon meant hewasnt able to escape Q2 and hadto make do with a P13 start, andhis ghtback in the race saw amisjudgement overtaking RomainGrosjean penalised by a drive through,nishing just outside the points in 11thas a result. The Frenchman, however,had another strong weekend: outqualied his WC teammate for P7,survived Prezs attentions, andstruggled through a tough one stopstrategy to nish 8th.

The Sauber pair had an up and downtime at the hilly track: Nico Hlkenberglooked on for a strong performanceafter qualifying P11 and moving up atthe start, but was soon struggling forrear grip, dropping back to 13th by the

Esteban Gutirrez was ontrack too early in Q1 and therefore missedhis window in the changing conditions: butfor that, P21 would have been far higher.The Mexican was much quicker thanhis teammate throughout the race, but apenalty for exceeding track limits whileghting with Pastor Maldonado droppedhim back to P14.

The Venezuelan was ghting his car allweekend, as was teammate Valtteri Bottas,with neither driver able to escape Q1 forP17 and P20 respectively. Maldonadosrace wasnt much better, after a scrappydice with Gutirrez and a collision withdi Resta at the pit entrance, while Bottasstruggled to hang on to the back of themideld: the pair nished P17 and P15.

Giedo van der Garde had probably hisbest race in F1 to date after makinga brave call for slicks in Q1 meant henished the session in P3, and ultimatelyqualied in a best ever P14 spot. In therace he fought hard to hang in early on,but ultimately drove a strong race to easilywin the Caterham/Marussia battle, andeven picked up the scalp of Maldonado asa bonus.

Against this, teammate Charles Pic hada weekend to forget: wrong place atthe wrong time after being caught onthe weighbridge in qualifying to nishthe session in P22, he at least overtookboth Marussias before retiring with anoil leak. Jules Bianchi and Max Chiltonalso escaped Q1 for P15 and 16, but fellbackwards in the race to nish P18 and 19respectively.

At Pirelli, competition is known as theultimate research laboratory and inthe GP2 Series there are 11 of them,corresponding to the 11 circuits raced onall over the world. Out of all of them, Spa

is one of the most challenging for tyresbecause of its fast corners and high-energy loads. The compression at EauRouge in particular subjects the fronttyres to the highest vertical load of the

GP2 season.

All of Pirellis tyres are put through aseries of laboratory tests to assess theirperformance and strength before taking

to the track. There are three types ofstandard test to check the strength of the

tyres in extreme conditions:

First of all, high speeds: the tyres aredriven on a rolling road at speeds of up

to 400kph far quicker than anythingthat would happen in real life, even atSpa. Vertical loading is checked too:not only are vertical loads of up to 1000kilograms placed on the tyre, but the

tyre is also red at high speed into solidobjects to simulate impacts with kerbs.Finally, camber angles are checked up tovalues that far exceed any normal usageparameters.

There are other tests to simulatethe behaviour of the GP2 tyre whilecornering. In order to achieve this thetyre is steered by a machine at high slipangles. So every base is covered, similar

to the way that Pirelli prepares tyres forFormula One races.

But the design of the GP2 tyres is veryspecic, as the characteristics are quite

different to those of the Formula Onetyres. These tyre characteristics all haveto be assessed thoroughly in testing andraces, so that Pirelli can best respond tothe needs of the GP2 drivers.

The information Pirelli gathers fromthese extreme tests is vital for theteams, allowing them to make accuratepredictions about how the tyres will

behave in all types of usage conditions.Not just that, but Pirelli is also able

to provide teams with historical dataregarding average temperatures,pressures, tyre wear, tyre life and wearprole at every race. The teams are then

able to compare averages with datataken from their own cars, and this isvery useful when it comes to properlysetting up the car and nding the beststrategies for individual races.

GP3 is truly a global Series. Over the pastthree and half seasons weve had 35 different

nationalities represented by the drivers withGreat Britain as the most successful nation.The Brits have scored eight wins since theinception of GP3, Finland have six, Mexicoand Switzerland are joint on ve whilstCanada, USA, New Zealand and Portugal

have four, Indonesia and France have3, with Cyprus and Germany on two

apiece.

13 teams have competed in GP3, coveredby 10 different countries with France topping

the victories on 21, Great Britain have 12,Australia 9, Canada 8, Switzerland 6 andFinland 2.

During the 2013 season, 28 drivers from16 nations have raced in GP3, with 8 different

nationalities victorious from 12 races: Cyprus,Finland, USA, Romania, Great Britain, Italy,Argentina and Russia.

2011 GP3 Vice-Champion James Caladogot his title hopes back on track afterconverting reverse pole into a commandingvictory in the GP2 Sprint Race. The Brit liesjust 24 points behind Series leader Stefano

Coletti, another former GP3 ace. There werealso podium nishes for GP3 graduatesAlexander Rossi and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs.The Monegasque driver failed to score inSpa despite a brilliant comeback drive in

the Feature and he will be keen to protecthis championship advantage with three GP2rounds remaining. It was a tough weekendfor reigning GP3 Champion Mitch Evans,

after qualifying mid-pack, the Kiwi nished just

outside the points in both races. Daniel Abt also

failed to score after a difcult qualifying session

saw him start from P24.

F1 Qualifying didnt exactly go to plan for Valtteri

Bottas (2011 GP3 title winner) and Esteban

Gutirrez (GP3s inaugural Champion). The

duo were both caught out by the changing

weather conditions and failed to make the cut

for Q2, starting 20th and 21st respectively.

Despite a drive-through penalty, the Mexican

came home in 14th place for Sauber, one place

ahead of the Williams of Bottas.

2007 F1 World Champion Kimi Rikknen gotbehind the wheel of the GP3/13 car for a oneday test session at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The current Lotus F1 Team driver was inBarcelona as part of an ofcial developmenttest in preparation for the 2014 season. Kimicommented: I wanted to test the GP3/13because my friend Afa Heikkinen has a

team in this Series and I have been closelyfollowing their progress and results since thebeginning of the season. I was curious to see

Spa Francorchamps is famous for changeable

weather, but 2010s weather was notoriouseven by the usual standards: the GP3 eld

saw rain during free practice, qualifying and

both races, but none of the downpours threwup quite as much chaos as the one during the

sprint race, which turned Adrian Tambays race

upside down.

The Frenchman, who started the race inP27 after being involved in a multi-car pile

up at the rst turn in the feature race, hadlittle expectation of a result despite showing

his speed by topping the times in a wet freepractice, and when the race got underway indry conditions there was no clue of the surprise

to come.

When the rain returned midway through the

race Tambay had nothing to lose by staying outon slicks while everyone else pitted, picking

up a ten second lead next time round in the

process. His rivals, led by Nico Mller, wereclosing in as the rain eased up, with conditions

sitting almost perfectly between slicks and

wets as they caught the Frenchman with threelaps to go.

Mller kept up the pressure but Tambay was

equal to the ght, and when Alexander Rossipassed the Swiss driver on the penultimate lap

it gave the Frenchman the breathing room toresist: Tambay held on to claim a memorablevictory by just 0.4 seconds to the delight of

the fans, who applauded the Frenchmans

determination as the chequered ag dropped.

My helmet design popped

into my head after veminutes. I always had a

plain helmet as I was too

scared to have a design

as was worried I would rollthe car and crash it. And

that actually did happen in

Turkey when I had my rst

helmet paint job. Now I justhave the red, white

and blue.

Ive always been really into

my helmet designs so Ichange it up a bit every year

but I keep the colours mainly

the same. This year I did

something special as Im halfSingaporean so I have used

their logo and kept the colours

red and white, and added

some blue for the UK too. Iashed it up with

some sparkles.

Ive kept my initials on the

side of my helmet but I havechanged the colours. One

reason for this is because

of my sponsor, so I have

changed it to orange as inorange fruit. I think the colour

is very bright and stands

out. I want to do a new

helmet design for Abu Dhabi,something more fun with a

cartoon theme.
