Seven rounds are done and dusted, as the summer break is now upon us, we thought it wouldbe a nice touch to look at the best statistics of the 2013 season so far.

Bird and Coletti have themost race wins: 3 each.

Ericsson has the most frontrow starts: 4. He has the

    most pole positions: 2.

Coletti has the most podium nishes: 7 and

the most laps led: 91. He is the only driverwho recorded win, pole and fastest lap.

My LIFE IN NuMbErS bEST bITS

When the GP2 and GP3 teams encounter an

issue with their cars, they can call for Technical

Assistance, a team of seven people dedicated to

    the well-being of fty-three cars (GP2 and GP3).

Actually, I prefer that you call us technical

support instead of assistance: we support the

teams and help them understand and analyse

any technical dilemma, explained head of

    Technical Support Daniel Trema.

Were a team of expert technicians and

engineers. There are three stages in which we

work: rst, the development testing. We work

closely with Pirelli and Dallara at the beginning

of each car cycle. It helps us foresee any

potential problem. Then comes the pre-season

testing with the teams and then nally the race

weekends. Nothing can replace the reality of

a race weekend. Lastly, we are monitoring the

ageing of each engine. The fact that we are

working simultaneously on 26 cars in GP2 gives

us precious global vision on what could happenand how to react efciently. On top of that, we

have an invaluable experience of nine years in

    the Series.

Our mission is to answer to the teams questions

and make sure that the cars can race: when

they come to us with an issue we give them our

analysis of the situation and help them make theright decision to x it. Our goal is to make sure

that where possible no car will stop during a race

due to a technical malfunction. We collect the

data from each car at the end of each session

and therefore we can intervene pre-emptively inbetween races if we suspect that something is

    not right.

We also monitor the life of the key components

such as the engine, the ECU, the steeringwheel As you can see, our work perimeter is

rather large and we dont really count the hours

we stay at the track or at the ofce! But we are

passionate and we want to make sure that our

teams can only concentrate on their set up and

strategy and know that were always here incase something happens.

    WhO yOu GONNA CALL?

CArLINandJOLyON PALMErThe champagne must havetasted so good! Carlin and

Jolyon enjoyed their rst well-earned race win of the seasonin Budapest. Felipe Nasr also

nished third. The British squadleads the teams standings

    40 points over Rapax.

    NAThANALbErThON

The Frenchman dominatedSundays race with a maturedrive and has taken a maidenGP2 win, the rst one of the

    season for Trident.

FAbIO LEIMErThe Swiss pocketed anotherpodium in Budapest and hasscored an impressive total of

44 points in the last two rounds. He has jumped Sam Bird in the

drivers standings to lay thirdbefore the summer break.

TOM DILLMANNTom looked really strong inqualifying after he brilliantly

grabbed his rst pole position, but a bad start meant he nished

the race out of the points. Hesliced his way back through theeld on Sunday but still crossed

the nish line out of the top eight.

    Stefano

ColettiA weekend to forget for theMonegasque driver: a poor

qualifying session, an incidentin Race 1 and twentieth place inRace 2 meant no points scoredin Budapest. However, Stefano

remains leader of the Seriesand his race pace gives himcondence for the rest of the

    season.

    JuLINLEAL

2012 saw Carlin target a step forward inperformance and the early season showed

signs of a marked improvement for the Britishteam, but the Budapest round was the venuefor the biggest jump ahead yet thanks to asterling performance by their lead driver, MaxChilton.

Qualifying was a complicated affair thanks to a

huge storm ahead of the session, which started

with running water at turn 11. Most drivers, including Chilton, put in a banker lap just to beon the board, but they were all keeping an eyeon the sky with a hope of some dry runninglater in the session.

Teammate Rio Haryanto was the rst man torisk dry tyres, and was duly rewarded with thebest time so far as the oodgates opened andeveryone spilled out on track on super softs. With a minute remaining Chilton was in P22

but crossed the line with 10 seconds remainingin the session: what followed was a simplyphenomenal lap to claim his, and the teams, rst ever GP2 pole position.

The tight, technical nature of the Hungaroringgenerally rewards those starting from pole, but you still need a good getaway when thelights go out. Chiltons was perfect, leading titlecontenders Davide Valsecchi and Luiz Razia

into turn one as the pair concentrated on eachother through the owing rst half of the circuit,

allowing the Briton the breathing space to runhis own lines and eke out a small, but crucial, margin over the squabbling pair.

As the leader of the race Chilton was not likely

to dictate pitstop strategies, and so it proved:the Briton came in on lap 13, with Valsecchion his tail, simply to cover off stops made byhis rivals on the previous two tours. The pairemerged in order, and were soon houndingdown the late stoppers, eventually reclaiming

the top spots on lap 22 when the last stopswere made.

From here it was a straight ght to the ag.Valsecchi threw everything he had at theBriton, with Razia setting up a watching brief

on the tail of the pair, and the Carlin pitwall hada few anxious moments as the gap droppedto effectively nothing between their man andValsecchi as the laps counted down, but whenthe chequered ag dropped it was Chilton who

won the day, ghting off the championshipleaders for victory by just 0.6 seconds.

The stars aligned for LewisHamilton in Budapest, with

the Englishman picking up his rstwin for Mercedes after a typicallygutsy performance all weekend, witha stunning lap when it counted inqualifying for an expected pole position

and a strong run in the race, overtakinghis rivals on demand for an emotionalvictory. On the other side of the garageteammate Nico Rosberg could onlydream of what could have been: a stuckbrake bias adjuster meant P4 on the

grid, and an engine blow handed theGerman a bitter DNF.

But Hamilton didnt have it all his ownway, and with a fair wind behind himRomain Grosjean could have challenged

for the win. The Frenchman was fasterthan teammate Rikknen all weekend, did a great job for P3 in qualifying and

held the position in a frantic race start, was held up by Vettel on the rst stintbefore being given a somewhat harshdrive through penalty when overtakingMassa which saw a certain podium

evaporate, with an ultimate P6 nishthat should have been more.

    Sergio Prez outperformed teammate

Button in qualifying to get to Q3 andP9, but a torrid start to the race sawthe Mexican bumped down the order:a long second stint on a two stoppersaved his blushes, with a P9 nish a

solid return afterwards. Against that,Nico Hulkenberg had a disappointingweekend by his standards in qualifying

P12 (albeit a tenth off a spot in Q3), waspenalised for speeding in the pitlane,

and nished just out of the points in 11th,while teammate Esteban Gutirrez losttime in practice with an engine problemand thus qualied in P17, before retiringon lap 28 in the race.

    Pastor Maldonado struggled in

qualifying, running faster in Q1 thanQ2 for a P15 start, one spot aheadof teammate Valtteri Bottas, but an

aggressive drive on Sunday saw plentyof overtaking by the Venezuelan tobring home Williams rst point of theseason with a strong tenth place, whilethe disappointed Finn retired with a

    hydraulics issue.

Giedo van der Garde came out on topin the Caterham/Marussia battle after

struggling with trafc in qualifying: theDutchman lined up in P20, one spotbehind teammate Charles Pic but aheadof Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton, and astrong start with better tyre degradation

on a three versus two stop strategy sawhim nish 14th, one ahead of Pic wholed the Marussias home.

For Budapest, round seven of the GP2

Series, Pirelli brought the P ZeroYellow soft and P Zero White medium toHungary: the same nomination as wasused in Formula One. Over the courseof the season, this happens quite a lotin GP2: a sign of how closely the feeder

series mirrors the pinnacle of worldmotorsport.

The choice of soft and medium tyres forthe Hungaroring was a relatively obvious

one as this was a perfect combination totackle the tight corners and high ambienttemperatures of the track. Although theHungaroring is a permanent circuit, it

has the characteristics of a street circuit:a narrow and twisty layout, medium tolow speeds, and low grip thanks to asmooth surface.

Traction and braking are two key areasthat work the tyres hard at a circuit like

Hungary. The large number of narrowcorners and big steering inputs meanthat the edges of the tyres are subjectedto peaks of temperature and wear. Thetyres can actually overheat more on a

slow and twisty track than on a fast andowing track, contrary to what manypeople think. So temperatures are a keyelement for the tyres to work perfectly, and with ambient temperatures of upto 37 degrees centigrade on race day,

this was one of the hottest GP2 raceweekends of the year.

Each tyre compound has its own

window of optimal temperature. Thisis called the working range, and theconditions found in Hungary put theGP2 tyres right at the top of theirworking ranges. Track temperatureswere in excess of 50 degrees

centigrade, which rarely happens, but the temperature of the surfacehas a profound effect on the waythat the tyres work which is whyPirelli engineers spend so much

time measuring track temperatures, using a thermometer with a pin whichensures a very high level of precisionand is the same which is used to

measure tyre temperatures. If a tyreis operating below its ideal workingrange this can cause graining. If itis operating above its ideal workingrange this can cause overheating. In both cases the result is a notableloss of grip but this did not happen

at the Hungaroring, underlining thestrength as well as the performanceof the P Zero GP2 tyre range.

Getting the tyres to function within

their optimal working range is animportant challenge for any driver. In fact, it is the single most importantfactor in tyre management, whichis why the lessons learned in GP2are so vital for every young drivers

    future career.

However, it was a much tougher story for currentGP3 Vice-Champion Daniel Abt. The Germandriver fought up to P14 in Saturdays race but

suffered a puncture. The ART Grand Prix driverwas also given a grid penalty for the Sprintfollowing contact made in the Feature, thus nopoints scored. Abt will be hoping for a turn offortunes following the summer break.

It was a tricky weekend for both Valtteri Bottasand Esteban Gutirrez in F1 with neither driverreaching the chequered ag. It was the Finnsrst retirement of the year with a hydraulic

Nico Mller was looking to the technical nature ofthe Hungaroring to compound his championshipght after victory in Valencia, and the weekendstarted ideally for the Swiss driver when he setthe pace in free practice, nishing nearly threetenths ahead of Pal Varhaug and EstebanGutirrez.

The points only start in qualifying, however, andon a track washed clean by the rain overnightMller set the early running with a lap of1:36.991, with Gutirrez setting an identical time

a few minutes later: the Swiss driver held poledue to setting the time rst, and when StefanoColetti and Robert Wickens set times within atenth of pole the ght for victory was alwaysgoing to be intense.

The Swiss driver made a great start when thelights went out, with Wickens making a bettergetaway to slot into second at turn one. Withthe three drivers behind him squabbling amongthemselves Mller had just enough space topull away slightly and avoid being pulled intothe ght, which saw Gutirrez ght his way pastWickens before heading after his Swiss rival.

The Mexican hounded Mller for the rest of therace, with the gap between the pair shrinking tobelow a second, but the Swiss driver had enough

left to hold on for the win by 1.4 seconds, withColetti eventually reclaiming third position andthe nal podium spot. Mller rounded out theweekend by ghting up to P6 in the sprint race, putting himself rmly into the championship ghtahead of an epic weekend in Spa.

I have always had this colourscheme since my go-kartingdays. I always use yellow,

    change my design next year

    as maybe its becoming old-fashioned.

I have the Irish ag on thereas Im half Irish/half Cypriot,so I have green, gold and

looks pretty cool as it has aretro image to it.

The main design is the Britishand the Italian ag, my twonationalities. Its a simple
