Since their rst track appearance, newcomersRUSSIAN TIME has surprised us by changingtheir livery at every event. They started witha plain blue car displaying a big Russian agon the side. Then, in Bahrain, they introducedBird and Dillmanns names in Cyrillic script.In Barcelona, the drawing of a little bird ona podium celebrated Sams rst win. ForMonaco, the livery sported a promotionalmessage for the Olympic Games of Sochiin 2014. In Silverstone, the Halow Project, aSurrey Charity supporting young people witha learning disability to lead more independent,

fullling lives, had their logo added to thecars livery.

Last week, the message Save the Ring anda green layout of the Nordschleife decoratedboth machines: We wanted to maximiseawareness of Nrburgrings situation, saidteam manager Timo Rumpfkeil. It is a surprisefor the local people here who try to ensure thefuture of this track. We believe it deserves to

be kept for at least the next hundred years!Team Principal Igor Mazepa added: We wantto tell a story with our liveries. We try andchoose important causes that are close to ourhearts and translate it into a new design foreach event. We dont know what it will be in

When youre a true fan, you support your herono matter what! Thats why forty-ve Swedes

took a bus for a twenty-hour long journeyto head to the Nrburgring and show theirsupport to their chosen one: Marcus Ericsson.They met with their favourite racing driver whostopped by their hotel for some pictures and along Q&A session. They were able to follow theaction from one of the grandstands deployinga huge banner of the Swedish ag. We hopeto get it on TV,said Fan Club President BoweBevonius. We cheer lots every time we see

Marcus car! We made special polo shirts forthe event with the Swedish ag, the name and

date of the event. Were all very proud to bewearing them! Marcus rewarded them witha race win and they could hear their nationalanthem making it worth their while.But Marcus was not the only one to be luckyto have fans to cheer him on: Mitch Evanshad a tour group come all the way from NewZealand to see him at Nrburgring, includinghis biggest sponsor Sir Colin Giltrap Talkabout dedication!

Back-to-back race weekends are a logisticalchallenge, explained Racing EngineeringsSporting Director Thomas Couyotopoulo. Thereis a rule in GP2 that states that you cannotdismount the awning until the start of the F1race, but since we had to travel directly fromSilverstone to the Nrburgring instead of goingback to the workshop, we chose to work on ourcars in England until Monday morning, and thenwe packed everything up. Everyone gives us ahand, from the truckie, to the mechanics and theengineers. The truck left Monday at noon andwas in Germany by Tuesday.

When the race weekends are so close together,you also have to rush to get the drivers overallsand the team kit cleaned. Its no small job:thats a lot of laundry! You also need to nd apaint shop for the spare parts you may need tochange on your cars. You have to put pressureon the local people to have things done on time

for scrutineering. Its a challenge! Then, sinceyou cant start setting up the awning until theWednesday, Tuesday is a bit calmer, but the

engineers meet with myself at the hotel and wedo a debrief and analyse the previous event.The mechanics are relaxing a little after anintense week (there is a lot of things to see at theNordschleife), but they also look at the mileageof the parts and make sure everything is readyfor the weekend.

As for the drivers, back-to-back races areintense! They have very little time to relax andreset their mind in between events, but its partof the preparation and they need to deliver assoon as free practice begins. Normally, they trainevery day, but after a race weekend, its goodto have a day off and just not eat too much inorder to not have a surprise on the scale. Its noteasy mentally. Maybe its easier if youve had agood weekend in Silverstone, but they have lesstime to disconnect and come with a fresh mind.But I would say its also part of their preparationfor F1. They will have very intense months inFormula One too in the future and they haveto be ready for it!

Nico Hlkenberg set up his championshipcredentials after running a perfect weekend(pole, 2 wins, 2 fastest laps) at his homerace at the Nrburgring in 2009, the rst timeanyone had done so since Nelson Piquet atthe Hungaroring three seasons earlier. VitalyPetrov edged the German into P2 in a cold andwindy free practice session, but it was the lasttime all weekend that any of his rivals had ananswer for his incredible pace.

Hlkenberg led the way in qualifying, claimingthe top spot with ve minutes remaining inthe session: the German was slightly luckywhen Luca Filippi spun at the nal chicaneimmediately after the time was set, but theSuper Nova car was removed with two minutesleft and no one else was able to string a laptogether to steal pole.

The German was utterly dominant in thefeature race, controlling the pace throughoutand setting a string of fastest laps to claimvictory by 14 seconds over Roldn Rodrguezand Andreas Zuber to put himself within a pointof Romain Grosjeans championship haul.

The sprint race saw an even more dominantdisplay from Hlkenberg: the German madeshort work of blasting past his rivals when thelights went out, moving up from P8 to secondbehind the equally fast starting Petrov, whowas a couple of seconds ahead by the timethe German moved up to P2, a gap that startedto shrink rapidly.

Petrovs advantage was quickly removedentirely: the Russian hit Lucas di Grassi at thestart, and a drive through for the incident meantHlkenberg didnt have a chance to overtakefor the lead. As if to make up for this slightthe German set a string of qualifying laps tohighlight his natural advantage over his rivals,crossed the nish line a whopping 26 secondsahead of lvaro Parente and Kamui Kobayashiand picking up a four point lead over Grosjeanin the title race as he did so.

Romain Grosjean lookedsurprisingly disappointed as

he stood on the podium to receivehis trophy for third place at theNrburgring, although its probablyunderstandable if you look a littledeeper at the Frenchmans weekend:on the pace of teammate Rikknenall weekend, he made much betteruse of his rst set of softs to handhimself a possibility of a win beforethe safety car, then pushed Vettelfor most of the race before havingto hand over P2 to his teammatein the closing stages of the race.Nevertheless, he should be proudof his strong performance, and lookto repeat it in the second half of the

season.He would certainly be happier thanthe Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamiltonand Nico Rosberg, who had a torridweekend after a strong few races.The Briton pulled off a remarkablepole position, much to the chagrinof his teammate who was out in Q2due to a bad call by the team andwould have been looking to ghtfor top honours, but when the lightswent out Hamilton dropped behindeventual winner Vettel and Webberand struggled with tyres to nish5th, while Rosberg had the sameproblems but started in the pack, atleast nishing in the points for 9th.

was unable to get on top of his carin qualifying, lining up in P13 as aresult, but did a solid job on a twostop strategy to come home 8th. Hestood in contrast to Nico Hlkenberg,who found a way back into Q3 forP10 before having the ght of hislife against a variety of midelders inthe race, but got by di Resta on thepenultimate lap for the nal point of therace. Against this, teammate EstebanGutirrez struggled to match his moreexperienced teammate, starting P14and nishing P13 in what he will seeas another learning opportunity.

A fuel pump problem saw PastorMaldonado line up in P18 in Williams600th grand prix, one spot behind

teammate Valtteri Bottas, but a greatdrive in the race saw the Venezuelanghting for a points nish before a tyrechange problem on his last stop sawhim drop back to P15 at the nish,one spot ahead of his teammate, whosuffered the same problem in the pits.

Charles Pic came out on top in theCaterham / Marussia qualifying battlebefore a replacement gearbox pushedthe Frenchman to the back of the grid.A slow puncture saw him stop out ofsequence, but a strong ghtback sawhim beat his rivals to nish P17, onespot ahead of teammate Giedo van derGarde, while Jules Bianchi suffered aspectacular engine failure for a DNF,and Max Chilton struggled on his tyreslate on to nish P19.

Like most circuits, the Nrburgring inGermany is frequently green when theGP2 teams arrive, especially duringfree practice on Friday. This year wasno exception. But as the weekend goeson, the track gets more rubber put onto itand consequently it becomes faster.

The roughness of the asphalt and theaction of the rubber gripping the trackleads to abrasion of the tyre againstthe surface. Parts of the rubber thenstick to the track between the stones ofthe asphalt. This is known as the circuitrubbering in.

Other parts of the tyre instead form small

strips of rubber when they come off.These are known as marbles. Theyweigh just a few grams, and tend toaccumulate on the outside of corners, oroff the racing line in braking areas.

Tyres that wear quicker deposit morerubber on the surface, both in terms ofmarbles and the track rubbering in. Inthe case of GP2 at the Nrburgring, thiswas the supersoft tyre: an ultra-quickcompound that was especially usefulfor qualifying. A number of drivers alsomanaged to incorporate it into their racestrategies.

The more rubber on the surface, themore grip. This allows faster lap times,but also limits wear and degradationon the tyres. That is also why the data

captured during free practice on Fridayoften has to be revised and updated asthe weekend goes on. The latest dataallows a more accurate prediction ofrace performance.

People talk about track evolution alot, but it is really an important factor atevery level, points out Pirellis racingmanager Mario Isola. One of the mostcritical phases of the weekend for this isqualifying. In general terms, drivers willchoose to leave their qualifying runs aslate as possible in order to benet fromthe best track conditions with the most

rubber on the surface. However, if youleave it too late then you can get caught

out and this is something that we see inFormula One as well as GP2.

Its yet another way that GP2 helpsprepare drivers for the future, wheregood knowledge of tyre behaviour andstrategy is always useful.

Team leaders ART Grand Prix reachedseveral landmarks over the Nrburgringweekend. Facu Regalias victory in Race 1

was the 20th for the French squad inGP3, with the Argentine driver and Jack

Harvey collecting podiums to bring

the teams rostrum tally over the big 50 mark(51 to be exact)! All three ART Grand Prixdrivers have now achieved a Race 1 win in2013, with Regalia, Harvey and Daly sitting inthe top ve of the Drivers Standings.

Former GP3 winner James Calado had apositive weekend in Nrburgring, nishingsecond in both races and pocketing 32 pointswhich has moved him into fth in the DriversStandings. The Brit will be looking to moveup the order and repeat his GP2 form fromlast season. Series leader Stefano Colettidrove what he described as his best everrace in the Feature when he qualied 13thbut carved through the eld to produce astunning rostrum nish in third. Race 2 wasnot successful for the Monegasque driverscoring no points but he holds a 27 point leadin the Series.

2012 GP3 Series Champion Mitch Evansmade a great start in Saturdays Race to holdP1 for a few seconds but ran too wide anddropped outside of the top ten, with a pit-stopissue preventing his chances of points in abrilliant comeback drive. The Kiwi collected twopoints in the Sprint the next day.

GP3s inaugural champion Esteban Gutirrezequalled his best qualifying for Sauber in F1with 14th and nished in the same position forthe race. Valtteri Bottas for Williams F1 hada difcult weekend, not making it into Q2 andcoming home in 16th.

We had a very special guest in the GP3paddock during the Nrburgring weekendwhen 2007 F1 World Champion KimiRikknen paid a visit to Series newcomersand fellow countrymen, Koiranen GP.

Team Manager Afa Heikkinen has enjoyeda long friendship with the current Lotus GPF1 driver after giving him his rst opportunityin racing back in 1998. The two Finns haveremained in close contact ever since andtravelled together to this Round.

Afa commented, Kimi has been followingour progress this season and alwayswatches qualifying and the races. He is veryenthusiastic about the Series, in particular thenew GP3/13 car!

Rikknen wasnt the only F1 driver keento follow the GP3 action, Double F1 WorldChampion, Fernando Alonso, was on thepit-wall eagerly watching GP3 Race 1, as hechatted with GP3 Series CEO Bruno Michel.

When race engineers look for advice on whatto do in a wet/dry race, the 2011 feature eventat the Nrburgring is one of the best races theycould consider. With the threat of rain hangingheavily over the German circuit as the driverscame to the grid, front row men Mitch Evansand Antonio Flix da Costa took a gamble andswitched to wets before the installation lap.

The Portuguese driver dropped like a rockwhen the lights went out, but the Kiwi polemanheld on from P3 man Rio Haryanto and a fast

charging Lewis Williamson from P8 and ValtteriBottas from P11: his problem was compoundedwhen da Costa was handed a ten second

stop/go for not having all four wheels tted atthe three minute warning siren, a penalty whichwould also soon see Evans lose his tenuouslead in the race to Williamson, who had justmugged the Indonesian driver for his position.

The rain nally fell with ve laps remaining,with all bar the top three diving into the pits forwets: Williamson, Haryanto and Bottas had anepic battle with the conditions and each other,changing positions multiple times each lapbefore Haryanto nally claimed the top spot

late on the last lap for the win, before showingexactly how tricky the conditions were byrunning off track on the way back to the pits!

with green and bluebase, but people alwaysthought I was Brazilian

with that colour scheme soI changed it to green andblack which I think looks

awesome. Ive got the Irishand American ag on there

with a lucky lepricorn.

Ive always had the bigArgentine ag on my helmet

as Im really passionateabout my country. Ive putsome strange things on

my helmet like owers andwhite patterns, similar to theRikknen design from threeyears ago as I really liked it. I

also have a lion on the back toshow to the rest of the driversto watch out, Im aggressive!

The main part of the designis the J which I didnt realise

was on there for about ayear! I have the BRDC logoon which Im now a proud

full member of. As ART havequite a distinguished car, I likethe helmet to match so I keptthe base design but added

some red to match the liveryas I like to be colour co-ordinated with the car.
