1 2012 AD Welcome to 2012. A great year for that great girl, you must know her, Annie Versary. (Note from editor, please don’t start the year with bad puns!) Not only have we the Olympics in the country, but we mark 50 years of the new Cathedral in Coventry, 60 years of the reign of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II (or first for Scottish readers!) and 60 years of Ilmington school being on its present site, 70 years since the battles of El Alamein, 100 years since the sinking of the Titanic, 200 years since the birth of Charles Dickens, and 350 years since the arrival in Britain of the seaside favourite, Mr Punch, and of the seminal Church of England ‘Book of Common Prayer’. It’s also 2000 years since the birth of the infamous Roman leader, Caligula! The whole idea of marking anniversaries may seem odd to some. Why should we not just get on living in 2012, with all the challenges in terms of the big questions about economics, politics, ecology, etc? The idea of anniversary, though, is more than simply looking back, it is discerning where we have come from and it is our past, as individuals, families, communities, a country and the world, which informs us and gives us our identity. History is not simply a matter of trying to remember dates of monarchs, but instead it places us into our context. The events that took place in Bethlehem, Nazareth and Jerusalem, and the surrounding countryside some 2000 years ago are more than of historic interest. The birth of Jesus, which we’ve just celebrated, his teaching, miracles, death and resurrection, tell us of the most extra-ordinary story, a story in which the God who created creation, time and space, enters into our time and space, and becomes human, and enters into the story of humanity, which allows humanity to enter into the story of God. Christianity speaks about this as the possibility of us becoming a son or daughter of God. The story of Jesus has had such impact upon our world that everyone should be aware of it. It has affected music, literature, art, history, politics, and yet shouldn’t be viewed simply as an academic exercise. It embraces our human life, joys and sorrows, and shows a God who isn’t remote but involved. The involvement, though, isn’t something forced. The visit of the Angel to Mary in the Christmas story requires Mary to answer yes. The God who I invite you to know is one who calls you by name, but who requires an answer from you. 2012 AD

Welcome to 2012.

Deanery News

I trust Christmas was a wonderful celebration of our Saviour’s birth for everyone.

The next Deanery Synod will be on Tuesday, 31st January at 7.30 pm in St. Edmund’s Church, Shipston. We shall be welcoming one of the Cathedral Canons, and hearing about the work of Coventry Cathedral, and the events surrounding its Golden Jubilee in May – the 50th Anniversary of the consecration of the new Cathedral.

Thank you: During the last Lent services we collected money to help buy Bishop Cleophas in Matabeleland a new car to cope with the rough terrain there. The money has now reached him, and Elisabeth Ashworth received this letter of thanks from him:

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father be with you: like the great Apostle, I greet you with these words, hoping to find you well in Shipston in Warwickshire.

On behalf of the Standing Committee, Clergy and all of us in and around Matabeleland, I write this letter to express our greatest gratitude to you all for the gift of $2,397.00 towards transport.

Your donation is indeed most appreciated. We feel so warmly cared for, prayed for and supported. The clergy and laity are amazed and yet so touched profoundly and highly motivated by your generosity of spirit. By this contribution some of our burdens are lightened.

Once again thank you so very much. Yours in his Vineyard Cleophas Matabeleland.

May our Lord walk with you as you walk into his New Year. Every blessing, Jill

Preliminary planning meeting for the Jubilee Celebrations June 2012

Now that the Christmas celebrations are over and we are in the New Year, it's time to think how we might celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the beginning of June. An informal open meeting has been arranged on Thursday 5th January at 7pm in the W.I. Hall. We need ideas and suggestions as to how Tredington can celebrate this event. Please come along to share your ideas and if you are able to help in some way, that would be great. We want to make this a special day for the WHOLE VILLAGE. Not only do we want to celebrate together on the day but it would also be nice to have a permanent memorial of some kind in the village to mark this Jubilee for future generations. Come along, get involved - it will be fun - the more the merrier! If you are not able to attend this meeting but have ideas for the day ring Jenny Plenderleith on 664278 or Marilyn Payne on 666206.

ILMINGTON

Screen on the Green

On Friday, 27th January, we shall be bringing to Ilminington Village Hall the latest British version of Charlotte Bronte's classic novel 'Jane Eyre' (12 certificate). This time it is a well crafted, beautifully acted and a fiery adaptation of the romantic drama, which has been well received by the critics. It features the rising star and Australian actress, Mia Wasikowska (who played 'Alice in Wonderland') as the modest governess Jane longing for a secure home and Michael Fassbender, as the enigmatic and brooding Mr. Rochester. Jamie Bell, 'Billy Elliott' all grown up now, has won praise for his sensitive portrayal of St.John Rivers, Rochester's rival for Jane's affection. They have a solid supporting cast including Dame Judi Dench and Sally Hawkins. As Rochester, Fassbender shows he is one of his generations most virile and compelling leading man....this film should do him no harm if he fancies landing a James Bond role in the future. Tickets (with their kind permission) from the Village Store and the Red Lion, and if still available on the door. Hurry and get yours.....this should be a very popular evening. Doors open 7pm for 7.30pm start. As usual licensed bar, coffee/tea and refreshments will be on sale.

The Jubilee Kitchen Pot Is Growing - A Festive Time

At the start of December there was a very successful Wine Tasting Evening and Promises Auction at 'Ravenscroft' in Grump Street. Our thanks go to Sue & Mike Clasper, Rupert Wyles and team, the Howard Arms for providing some canapes, and the generous people who donated the 'Promises'.This was followed the next day at the Hall by our School children singing, a friendly Santa arriving in style, delicious refreshments from the 20-20 Group, wonderful stalls ...making the 2011 Xmas Bazaar very Christmassy indeed. There followed in the middle of the month a Mulled Wine, Mincepies & Carols Evening at The Manor' and then there was a Grand Jubilee Draw Coffee Morning at the Hall where the lucky winners of the great prizes were revealed. Our thanks go to Martin Taylor and also the donors of the Grand Draw prizes Wendy Nelson & Colin Edwards, Bruce & Pam McFarlane, The Bell at Alderminster, Roy Gar-wood and others. A Traditional English Celebration from our Morris Men was combined with a play-let from the Ilmington Drama Group on the 21st December. What a month!! On top of all this we were very pleased that Ilmington School and Colin Edwards, their Director, this year made the hall their venue for the School's wonderful 'Christmas in the 50's' performances.

St.Mary's Church

Many thanks again to Rob Hawkins for the splendid Christmas tree and to Stuart Fleming and Geoff Davies for manfully putting it up and getting the lights on it for the whole village to enjoy.

Wildlife (20:20Vision)

It’s been suggested that we have a short wildlife column in the magazine, with some practical suggestions and things to do. Robins are obvious at this time of year, as some robins migrate to Britain, but British Robins stay in this country, so it looks like there are more of them, and with their call (they are one of the few 'singers' during the winter), their promi-nence, and their ‘outstanding’ red chest they are the archetypal winter bird. We sometimes miss the importance of water for birds, and should there be freez-ing conditions, please make sure that you offer water, either using a bird bath, or a bucket, or tub etc. Make sure you regularly change the water, and keep it clean, for disease can be spread.

This month is the RSPB Big garden bird watch, on 28th or 29th. Spend an hour bird watching, and record your results at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

Finally there’s a campaign to seek to protect some of our most spectacular birds of prey, such as Peregrine Falcons, Hen Harriers and Goshawks. Current legis-lation isn’t protecting these birds so please sign the following petition: https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/23089

Ilmington Village Website - www.ilmington.org.uk

The website for the village is being constantly updated with new features and a list of current and future events. Photographs of events are frequently included as well. There is the opportunity for any groups or organisations to have their own dedicated page within the site. Organisers are asked to get in touch with Bruce McFarlane ([email protected]) to get a mention for their group or event.
