WelcomeI was thrilled to be asked to write the foreword for the 2013 insideKENT Restaurant Guide. For years I have been an advocate of the great food we produce and cook in Kent. Since I opened my rst restaurant, Thackeray’s in Tunbridge Wells over 10 years ago, I have known that Kent is a county of great food delights and possibilities.

Being born, raised and still living in Kent with a young family, the county holds a special place in my heart. It is always the first place I think of when opening a new eating venture. The variety of choice in great locally grown produce, and also the fantastic landscapes, offers so much in terms of being inspired to create great food to eat.

This inspiration for me led to the opening of The Hengist in Aylesford, a restaurant housed in a 15th century building. There are not many places in the world that offer such history and opportunity for a restauranteur.

Having seen the improvement to the quality in restaurants in Kent over the past 10 years, what has saddened me has been the equally rapid closure of the English pub. Once the hub of the community, the pub was the central force for life in a village or town. I guess this is one of the reasons why I am drawn to running them and making pubs once again vibrant places within the heart of a town. You can’t beat a combination of a good social atmosphere; great Kent food and great locally sourced beers.

Location is important to the success of a restaurant or pub and Kent offers such diversity, from town settings to discreet rural retreats. When I was looking for a new pub venture a couple of years ago, I was adamant that I wanted a coastal pub looking out onto the sea. I found myself in Whitstable and The Pearson’s Arms.

‘What a fantastic opportunity’ was my first thought. I couldn’t believe the location. The pub is right on the beach overlooking some of the most glorious changing vistas; from bright clear sunny days to smoky red sunset evenings. Who couldn’t be inspired by that?

With The Pearson’s Arms re-opened and running successfully, I was once again looking for a new challenge, but this time in a country location within a village. The Windmill in Hollingbourne seemed the perfect choice and in May this year we refurbished the pub, ensuring we added to the existing character and brought in our own touches, including a new menu and range of beers, wines and specialty cocktails. Working as I do in television, I travel quite a lot and it is always great to be leaving London or some other major conurbation and see the colour of life return as I come back to Kent, to my home. That’s the experience I want the customers of my pubs and restaurants to feel.

Go out and explore all that Kent has to offer in terms of great food and great venues, and be proud of a county that has so much going for it.

Thackeray’sRichard Phillips’ first restaurant, Thackeray’s in

Tunbridge Wells, is well known as one of the best restaurants in Kent. In the ten years since it has been

under Richard’s leadership Thackeray’s has won numerous accolades and currently holds a Michelin Star and three AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, and was

awarded ‘Best Gourmet Restaurant’ in the Kent Restaurant Awards in 2009.

HengistIn 2004, Richard took ownership of Hengist in Aylesford,

near Maidstone. The building is packed with almost as much history as Aylesford itself, which is one of the oldest towns in Britain. Dating back to the 1560’s,

Hengist takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon king of Kent, Hengist circa 449 AD. The restaurant offers

modern European cooking coupled with Richard’s passion for style and sophistication. He has created in

the Hengist, an elegant and intimate dining experience.

The Windmill by Richard PhillipsWhere distinctive character, real ales, fine wines and

good wholesome food combine to create the ideal pub environment for thirsty passers-by to avid foodies alike.

The Windmill is very much a community pub whilst retaining a welcome to tourists and those in search of a

great night out; a place where local and seasonal fare are as much of the experience as the proud heritage of

the village. The Windmill is a totally different Richard Phillips experience, but retains the quality, passion, and

attentive service for which his restaurants are known.

Pearson’s Arms by Richard PhillipsWith Richard’s knowledge and understanding of the

growing sophistication of Kent diners, he opened his first pub/restaurant in December 2010 offering customers

the finest beers to match a menu that reflected the coastal location. Sited on the beach at Whitstable,

Pearson’s Arms by Richard Phillips offers simple, but great tasting British food, sourcing ingredients from the

best of Kent’s countryside and sea. The pub is the perfect complement to his group of restaurants.

The Old Brewery Tavern may look back to historical antecedents, but it is wholly contemporary in design, outlook, approach and style. With its striking sliding glass windows that allow us to open to the sunshine whenever it may appear, and with its decking, beer garden with heated jumbrella and bright modern furnishings, the courtyard area of the Old Brewery Tavern is anything but 'old' in feel.

A comfortable, more discrete lounge area contrasts this, with its warm modern fireplace, while wooden tables and chairs in the central area retain the feel of traditional British pub.

At the Old Brewery Tavern, we pride ourselves on our menu of both daily specials as well as foods that range from salads and platters to more substantial main meals, especially locally sourced meats cooked on the char-grill. Our burgers are definitely the best in Canterbury!

Sitting on the harbour-front overlooking the fishermen’s day-boats, Rocksalt’s glass walled dining room and terrace hang right over the water, giving diners unrivalled views out across the Kent coast, and even the chance to see the day’s catch being delivered direct to the kitchen. The menu pays homage to the abundance of quality local produce from Kent and the surrounding area, with local farms supplying meat, vegetables and cheese. Enjoy the simple but expertly prepared dishes on chef patron Mark Sargeant’s menu that allow the ingredients to shine through; with dishes including signature dish mackerel pasty, mussels cooked on the kitchen’s charcoal Josper Grill, and Monkshill Farm pulled pork.

Housed in a spectacular curved oak building, Rocksalt echoes the timber of the nearby buildings on the cobbled streets of the harbour, reflecting the rich history of the fishing port. Upstairs is a bar andoutdoor terrace from which you can enjoy local beers, wines and cocktails, while the main dining room includes a curved terrace for al-fresco dining, the sweeping vista offering the perfect setting to complement the food.

The Smokehouse is Mark Sargeant’s fish and chip shop, just a few minutes stroll from Rocksalt. The original smokehouse dates back over 150 years and was transformed to create the double height refectory style dining room with a 5m high glass wall, giving diners a view of the cobbled Stade, harbour and sea beyond. The black timber boards that once clad the building now create a large wooden wall inside complimenting the specially commissioned stainless steel sculpture of a shark and small shoal of fish that hangs from the ceiling over the flagstone floor.

The food reflects the ethos at the sister restaurant, with local produce championed as far as possible, and the cooking staying simple to allow the produce to speak for itself. The local fishermen bring in their daily catch of Folkestone flounder, plaice, dabs and mackerel, as well as cod, haddock, coley, rock and lemon sole to the kitchen. Other dishes include salt and pepper squid, battered scallops, fried sprats and mussel popcorn as starters; ‘fish bits’ and homemade fish fingers for the kids, and The Smokehouse’s own curry sauce and gravy as well as home pickled free-range eggs and onions.

Classic British food expertly cooked make both Rocksalt and The Smokehouse the perfect destination for anyone keen to enjoy the produce from the British Isles at its best.

Located in the Garden of England just off the A28 between Ashford and Canterbury is the chocolate box village of Chilham, where you can find a real gem; the 600 year old Woolpack Inn is nestled at the bottom of the hill in the shadow of the Norman castle.

With its vast oak beams and inglenook fireplaces it offers a glimpse into hospitality of yesteryear. The inn is said to be haunted by the Grey lady, a friendly ghost who wanders the main building.

Visitors can choose to relax in the cosy bar, the restaurant with its glorious bay window and country lane views or the patio courtyard where they will find the ancient olive tree which has been in situ since the inn was built. Parking is not a problem with availability for 25 cars to the rear of the hotel and space enough to accommodate a coach.

The Inn boasts a home-cooked menu with many of the ingredients being sourced locally. Fish comes off the boat in the morning and often is on the plate by lunch service.

Local mushroom sautéed in garlic butter, finished with stilton and cream and presented on a garlic ciabatta, real home-made steak & Masterbrew Ale pie, and homemade strawberry shortcake give a hint of the homely fayre on offer.

With awards and national press accolades galore plus listings in every major restaurant guide, The Ambrette

in Margate’s old town is something of a Thanet institution.

Chef patron Dev Biswal’s unique culinary style draws gastro tourists from far afield and is widely cited

as one of the key factors in helping revive the economic fortunes of the area.

A second opening just across the county border inRye in the White Vine House (holder of 5 AA stars in

the ‘restaurant with rooms’ category), is proving equally popular.

Deft spicing, exquisite marinades and first rate service mean that booking is essential for both lunch and

dinner throughout the week. Yet prices are surprisingly modest with the three-course £20 lunch menu offering

exceptional value.

Although invariably described a fine dining Indian establishment, do not expect to find curry house

staples on the menu. Ingredients with high sulphite content such as onion, garlic and ginger are avoided.

The restaurants are named after the Indian flower known for its culinary and aphrodisiac properties.

Indeed, given 24-hours notice, the kitchen will even prepare a special seven-course aphrodisiac tasting menu featuring an array of carefully crafted dishes

known for their positive effect on the libido.

The eclectic menu changes regularly and draws on locally sourced ingredients (English Channel sardine,

tender breasts of wood pigeon or Gressingham duck) combined with other more exotic fare such as water

buffalo, fillet of claresse catfish or zebra.

Dev is a popular figure around Thanet, regularly giving cooking demos at farm shops and food festivals,

running master classes and judging competitions at local schools and colleges.

Sunday nights at the restaurants are often given over to special gourmet nights, sometimes with matched

wines or even whiskies, occasionally to musical accompaniment.

From the molecular school of gastronomy, Dev still finds time to devote to R&D, experimenting with new

food combinations. The cooking style is about creating flavour affinities with different textures and tastes to

combat ‘flavour fatigue.’ Each dish is a piece of visual, as well as culinary, art.

Overlooking one of the finest beaches on the North Kent Coast, The Minnis Bar and Restaurant is a

relaxed, stylish restaurant that offers a truly outstanding dining experience. Alongside spectacular sunsets and

panoramic views across Minnis Bay, diners can expect fine, innovative, English cuisine in a comfortable and

welcoming environment.

Chef-patron is Jason Freedman, a member of the Master Chefs of Great Britain and the Academie

Culinaire de France, whose main area of interest lies in seafood and meat-based dishes, which is very evident

in the ever-evolving and varied menu at The Minnis. Jason is passionate about fresh local produce and

carefully sources his ingredients from local suppliers to ensure quality, as well as to support the community. Pure-bred Aylesbury ducks come from Laughton's

Ducklings near Faversham, free-range chickens and eggs, veal, lamb and pork all come from Monkshill

Farm at Waterham and the restaurant uses beef from cows bred less than five miles away on the Quex

Estate. Jason has also started using the cheese-makers at Canterbury Goods Shed to supply

the fine Kentish cheeses that grace The Minnis’cheese board.

Another of the things that makes The Minnis so special is that they cure, pickle, brine, salt and smoke their

own produce on site. Jason is interested in the unique flavours that these ancient culinary crafts bring to the

abundance of high quality meat, game, fish and seafood available locally, so on the menu you can find Kentish salamis, salt beef, pastrami, sweet-cured pork loin, corned beef and even homemade sausages such

as chorizo, venison and their version of the classic

French Toulouse. Add to these a variety of homemade pickles and chutneys and you can see why The Minnis

has become known as the place to go to find first- class, full-flavoured dishes with a difference.

In addition to all this, the team at The Minnis offer an outside and events catering service with menus that

can be completely tailored to the client’s requirements; whether the event is a lavish wedding at a stately

home, a drinks reception in a marquee or an informal family party, you can take advantage of their expertise and experience and enjoy the best, locally produced,

home cured food that Kent has to offer.

Head for the sound of the waves lapping against the white cliffs of Dover, follow the delicious aroma of local produce cooking in a busy kitchen, search out the glint of freshly poured ale. When the English Channel is about to wet your toes, you’ll be there.

Admittedly, it’s a location hard to beat. A pub with its own beach and views across to France when the weather’s clear. Couples say it’s decidedly romantic; families say it’s great fun.

It’s true that when you get to us your mobile phone might think you’re already in France (it is only 23 miles away) but The Coastguard prides itself on being an entirely British-orientated seaside “home from home.”

We like to keep things simple. Our friendly, family-run establishment has a garden with bench seating for sunny days, a large alfresco terrace for year-round drinking and dining, a busy bar for cosy evenings, and a restaurant for relaxed dining.

Chef Sam Wydymus takes the finest local ingredients and crafts her menu according to the tides, the weather and the seasons. The menu changes twice daily depending upon the availability of local produce but our sample menu on our website should give you an idea of some of the things that may appear on your visit.

We’d love to see you soon. The Coastguard – your home by the sea.

We hope you’re feeling hungry... Look forward to robust, fresh flavours served with imagination and flair. Head Chef Charles Lakin, who recently featured on BBC2’s Great British Menu, presides over heavenly menus that change regularly and uses locally caught fish and locally sourced produce. He takes inspiration from classic, traditional dishes and gives them a modern twist, often using unusual wild and foraged ingredients to flavour and enhance dishes.

Free range meats including pedigree beef and rare breed mutton come from nearby Sladden Farm. As well as growing his own herbs, edible flowers and vegetables, he sources fruit and vegetables from the Brogdale national fruit collection in Faversham and Walmestone growers. Fish and shellfish is landed exclusively from day boats in Ramsgate and Folkestone so he only uses seafood from local waters.

He speaks regularly to suppliers to create his menus, and his signature 6-course tasting menu is always packed with the season’s best produce. “A tasting menu is a fantastic showcase for our locally sourced produce as I can feature what is the best on that day.”

Cheeses from the Canterbury Cheesemakers and other artisan producers around England are always a feature on the trolley. Although a proud Yorkshireman, he is definitely an East Kent convert. “My suppliers are the cornerstone of my menus and I rely on the fantastic work of these guys to be able to produce the quality our customers have come to expect. We are so lucky in this corner of Kent to be able to source such a lot of our produce from less than 10 miles away throughout the seasons - what a privilege!”

Our Head Sommelier, Pawel Rog, draws on many years’ experience at top country house hotels to create a unique wine list with many unusual wines from little known regions of wine producing countries. He also works hard to produce fantastic flavour matches to accompany the 6-course tasting menu – sometimes daily! “The chef changes the 6-course tasting menu regularly in accordance with what his suppliers tell him is great, so often we have to work on wine and food combinations. This is a great part of the job and it is wonderful to be able to talk guests through their menus and accompanying wines and see how these wines can enhance their experience.

“Our philosophy at the Marquis is to offer the very best in quality while maintaining value for money. So whether you are looking for a simple glass of wine to go with your lunch, or a memorable vintage for special event, then we will have a wine for you.”

As you turn down the winding little lane that leads through open fields to Elvey Farm, you realise this is

somewhere special. It’s a medieval farmstead, a cluster of buildings centred around a beautiful sixteenth century barn - a perfect backdrop for lunch, an

evening meal or a delightful English afternoon tea and washed down by a glass of local wine from Biddenden

and Chapel Down.

Elvey Farm celebrates everything Kentish. Lamb comes from the sheep on a neighbouring farm; game

from the surrounding fields and fresh fruit and veg from local suppliers.

But it’s what they do with the food that counts. Head chef Simon Maynard lets his imagination run riot with

the seasons, coming up with new and exciting dishes that celebrate the surrounding countryside.

And then there’s the service, and here’s where Elvey

Farm has something money can’t buy; the staff actually enjoy working there. From the friendly smile

when you arrive, to the impeccable service, to the relaxed atmosphere they create throughout the

evening, you get a strong sense the staff actually welcome customers and enjoy what they do.

And when you finally head back down the winding little

lane, you can’t help but feel there’s something a little bit magical about Kent - and about Elvey Farm.

The Woolpack Hotel has recently reopened after a period of closure and neglect. Completely

refurbished, and under new management, the hotelnow has an excellent restaurant in the two rooms

behind the main bar.

Chef Mark Wadsworth is creating menus of an exceptional quality and is fast earning a reputation for his contemporary English food. The restaurant

itself oozes atmosphere with its dark colour scheme and cosy candle based lighting.

The restaurant menu could be described as modern British variations on classic European cuisine. The menu changes monthly as Chef

introduces exciting new dishes. His seasonally inspired food has already made The Woolpack the place to eat on the High Street. The pub landlord,

Rob Cowan, also has a farm where he rears traditional breeds of pig. His pork now goes straight

to the restaurant as prime cuts and sausages.

The bar menu also changes frequently and the 'gastro pub' style of food served has proved to be a welcome addition to the lunches offered on the

High Street. A far cry from plain 'pub grub', the bar menu offers sophisticated yet familiar cuisine and is a perfect match for the relaxed surroundings of this

family run, market town pub.

The roast on Sunday lunchtimes are proving to be hugely popular. Chef’s dry aged roast beef is the

highlight of the Sunday menu!

Set at the end of a sweeping driveway, RG’s really is the highlight of the Kent dining scene. Executive chef, Luke Davis, and his brigade are continuing to raise the standard when it comes to menus based around honest favourites, seasonal goodness and

local produce.

Popular among foodies, Luke’s menus are not just the result of skills and experience in the kitchen -

although, it is almost impossible to ignore that Luke has worked at the likes of the Milestone, The

Capital and with Novelli himself.

Menus are based on great ingredients, inspiration and a genuine love of food. Wherever possible local

produce and suppliers are utilised, and modern imaginative cooking techniques are often in the mix.

The ethos for greatness flows naturally into each dish, so whether you choose the roasted saddle of

Kentish lamb, the butter poached south coast lobster linguine with spinach and beetroot purée, or

something from RG’s grilled selection, you can expect nothing less than superb.

Dessert fans will rave at the sweet toothed selection. The open English apple tart topped with

caramel and sea salt ice cream is a definite must have, while the coffee panna cotta with evaporated

milk ice cream and mini cinnamon doughnuts is simply delicious!

Diners can also take pleasure in knowing that it is not just the food at RG’s that speaks volumes; the

restaurant itself is just as compelling. While the

bright welcoming windows overlook a garden terrace or impeccably kept grounds, the ambience is natural and relaxing. Couples can hide away in a

cosy corner or groups can request their own private dining room.

With so much to offer, it is unsurprising that RG’sis recognised as one of Kent’s finest.

Oak floors, period fireplaces and exposed timbers in an old inn popular with Spitfire pilots during WWII.

Peacefully wedged between the M20 and M26, pretty Wrotham and its rambling old coaching inn sit on

Kent's glorious North Downs, smack-bang on the Pilgrim's Way. Refurbishment of The Bull, also the village hub, has been a labour of love, with owner

Martin Deadman sprucing up their tardis-like interiors whenever the coffers allowed.

Martin has transformed the dining experience at The Bull and put the award-winning menu together which

takes diners on a delicious gastronomic journey through Kentish, British and European cuisine. The Bull

uses quality ingredients, local seasonal produce and adds one AA Rosette chef’s creativity and the great

service provided by the whole team - it’s clearly a winning combination!

You will certainly find good seasonal food from local family farmers such as venison sausages, 30-day-aged

Hartley-Bottom fillet steak, Winterdale cheeses, Woods’ Farm free range eggs and Kentdown

Situated just outside of the beautiful town of Westerham, this ‘hidden gem’ offers fine Indian dining in surroundings that will take your breath away. The new restaurant, a part of Shampan Group, opened in August 2011 and boasts 330 seats, five separate dining areas, two fully stocked bars, one cocktail bar, one coffee bar, a private dining room, an al fresco dining area and a lounge, which would not be out of place in a 5 star hotel.

Shampan at the Spinning Wheel is so much more than your standard Indian restaurant; it is a ‘destination restaurant’ and was shortlisted to the top ten in the category for Best Newcomer in the 2011 British Curry Awards.

Before you dine with us, why not take a seat in our lounge area? This is where guests are able to relax, both before and after a meal, surrounded by beautiful modern décor using a mixture of warm colours, with soft leather sofas and chairs. You will be taken aback with how relaxed the ambiance is with low-levellighting and beautiful background music of a piano playing; you will feel the stresses of the day justunwind from you.

All the classic Indian dishes await you, but why not start with Malai Murgh Kebab, which is chicken pieces lightly marinated in spices, salt and pepper, skewered with onions and peppers then grilled in the Tandoor. As a main dish, why not dive into a beautiful Chicken Tikka Masala; a modern day classic but expertly served with all the love and care that makes a classic dish sublime.

The passion and care that we put into the food is evident, but the food is just the start of Shampan at the Spinning Wheel. It is more than just great food, it is a great experience; you can feel the passion the staff have, from the moment you walk into the restaurant, it is the mission of the 30 staff who work at Shampan at the Spinning Wheel to make sure your every need and desire is being met and catered for. Shampan at the Spinning Wheel is a wonderful fine Indian dining experience.

Open since 2002, Shampan 2 continues to go from strength to strength. The original Shampan opened in

1989 however, Shampan 2 started the trend of fine Indian restaurants.

With beautiful elegant décor offering a beautiful contemporary feel, it offers a wonderful relaxed

ambiance for guests. Allow yourself to relax pre-mealin our gorgeous leather sofas while you let the stress

of the day pass you by and whilst you look at our menu that will both intrigue and excite you.

Shampan 2 will transport your taste buds with beautiful tastes of authentic Indian cuisine with dishes such as Scottish Salmon matured in a rich spicy marinade or

how about Duck in a sweet and sour Dhansak; cooked with lentils, green herbs and a touch of red pepper.

The recognition the restaurant has won speaks volumes about the standard of food - in 2011, the

restaurant made it to the final of the Best Indian Restaurant in the London Suburbs, only losing out to

sister Restaurant Shampan 3.

Shampan 2 is quite simply, a must.

After the success of sister restaurant Shampan 2, the eagerly anticipated Shampan 3 was opened in 2006.

Using all of the traditions that made Shampan 2 a household name, Shampan 3 has proved to be a

resounding success.

Set with stylish dark seating, low-level lighting and beautifully scribed walls, Shampan 3 is a stunning

intimate setting.

Like all of the Shampan Restaurants, the menu offersa lavishness of choice for its diners. One particular

popular starter is the Peri Peri Crab – expertly spiced fresh crab meat tossed with crunchy pepper julienne.

For your main, why not try the Tandoori King Prawn Masala flavoured with almonds. These are just some

examples of the dishes that Shampan 3 offers and along with the fantastic service, is the reason why

Shampan 3 won the award for Best Indian Restaurant in the London Suburbs at the 2011 British Curry

Awards.

A historic riverside inn dating back to the 1400s steeped with tales of smugglers, press gangs,

hauntings and much more, and yet today it remains a focus of activity. From wedding receptions, discos, parties, live bands through to barbeques, cocktail

evenings, quiz nights and the simple meeting ofpeople gathering for a quiet meal or drink.

Standing at the river edge at the foot of the old High Street, it has for centuries served as a home from

home for the river men, been the haunt of smugglers and was regularly raided by the old naval press gangs. It is older than Shakespeare's house, older than many well known ancient buildings, and is a place to reflect

on past and very hard times.

One of the oldest taverns in the country - this ancient inn (now named) the Three Daws is almost four

hundred and fifty years old and first gained itslicence in 1565.

The Three Daws began its life by being converted from five traditional styled wood fronted cottages. The

general structure is therefore some years older than the length of its history as a Thames tavern, and probably

goes further back to at least 1501.

A rambling building typical of its period, the wooden structure of its construction is reputed to be the work

of shipwrights who were seeking work at that time, owing to a depression in their waterside trade.

Serving fine hearty cuisine, with beatiful surrounding

of the river, The Three Daws is a must at any timeof the day.

Why not come and visit us and see for yourself just how it feels to be sitting in a place that has more

history associated with it than most other buildings added together.

A warm welcome awaits when you visit The Cock Inn. An Elizabethan chocolate box rural style pub,

just a short drive from the centre of Maidstone and four miles from the world famous Leeds Castle, the

Cock Inn wins the hearts of all who visit.

Exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces underline the charm of the pub which is thought to date from 1568, according to the date on the chimney breast

found in the attic. At different times, three clairvoyants have identified a ghost named George!

Country cooking with a twist is a speciality of the pub's 42-seater restaurant using locally sourced ingredients, and there's always a good choice of

ales, lagers and an extensive wine list to be enjoyed.

All food is cooked to order and our two chefs, who have been a team working together now for over

seven years, select the best local ingredients where possible and prepare everything to order, offering

traditional country cooking with a twist.

The Sunday Roasts are legendary and we also have a large fish menu. As well as our main menu,

we offer lunchtime light bites and snacks, a daily specials board and regular gourmet club evenings.

The restaurant can be hired for special occasions and meetings.

Dave the landlord is fanatical about real ales and has been in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for

almost 30 years. There are always at least three ales on draught. You’ll also find at least one

seasonal or speciality ale e.g. Bishops Finger, Late Red or Whitstable Bay.

It's a regular stopping point for walkers and dogs taking in the nearby Greensand Way. Monthly quiz

nights, gourmet club tasting evenings in winter months and a variety of traditional pub games help

ensure the pub is always worth visiting.

The White Horse at Sandway is a traditional family public house located just outside of Lenham. Built in 1678, the inn still maintains a number of its original features. All are welcome to dine, drink and relax in our friendly family environment. We happily cater for vegetarians, parties and children. Enjoy dining in our newly refurbished pub or outdoors in our al-fresco garden area. We have a varied menu as well as a children’s menu suitable for our wonderful little ones. We strive to use local produce in our home cooked menu items. Pub goers can expect a culinary delight when dining at The White Horse.

The pub, which had been closed for 16 months prior to August 2012, is now owned by Tony Jansen. He and his partner Sarah have wasted no time in giving The White Horse an internal makeover, with the wallpaper stripped back and fireplace opened up to give it a more rustic feel. Outside, they are planning to establish a large garden, play area and, uniquely, a viewing platform for people to gaze at the high-speed trains that go dashing past the rear of the pub to and from Ashford International.

We are open every Tuesday to Sunday and closed Mondays except on bank holidays. Opening times are 12pm - 3pm and 5pm - 11pm Tuesday to Friday, and open all day Saturday and Sunday. Food is served 12pm - 2.30pm and 6pm - 9.30pm Tuesday to Friday, 12pm – 3pm and 6pm – 9.30pm on Saturdays and 12pm – 4pm on Sundays.

The White Horse at Sandway is easily accessible. Located 1 mile away from Lenham Square and just 0.6

miles from Lenham Train station, The White Horse can be reached by car via Junction 8 of the M20. Once following signs for Lenham driving through Harrietsham, look out on your right hand side and turn off into the village. Once into the square, following the High street, continue through onto Headcorn RD and pass the train station on your right. GB Pizza Co is a new wood-fired pizza restaurant on Margate’s seafront, opened by a pair of Thanet newcomers: Rachel Seed, an award-winning chef

and social media consultantand journalist, Lisa Richards.

Delicious Neopolitan-style pizzas are cooked in an authentic wood-fired oven and arrive with perfectly

charred crusts, super-thin bases and imaginative toppings such as pear and Cambazola; pulled pork

and barbecue sauce; and wild mushroom, Parmesan and truffle oil.

There are always weekly specials available using the finest seasonal ingredients. Sauce is made

on-site and cooked for hours to a secret recipe. Dough is made by a local baker using the finest

Italian flour and to GB Pizza Co’s exact recipe which the girls perfected with the help of the

Fabulous Baker Brothers in the Cotswolds.Buffalo mozzarella is sourced directly from Italy

and the homemade chilli oil uses only thebest extra virgin olive oil.

Local suppliers are used wherever possible: meat is from Chandler & Dunn near Ash; cured meats are made by Dougal at the Windshack café in Minnis

Bay; vegetables from Nash Farm in Margate;coffee is roasted in nearby Whitstable and served

by baristas Shore Coffee UK; apple juice comes from local orchards at Little Stour; lager is brewed

by Chapel Down. Wines are served directly from the barrel courtesy of Borough Wines in London,

and ice cream is by one of the UK's most acclaimed gelato-makers, Gelupo Gelato.

The new restaurant is located in an enviable position on Margate's sea front, just steps from the water and with glorious sunset views that flood the

space with Turner light. The look is pared-down 'warehouse chic': industrial conduits, rough

floorboards, exposed brick and striking lighting.

All this care and attention to detail has already resulted in GB Pizza Co being listed as the number

one restaurant in Margate on Tripadvisor and it attracts a loyal following of local customers.

Delicious pizza, great coffee, a takeaway bottle of wine straight from the barrel, or a Bloody Mary and

breakfast pizza plus the papers on a Sunday morning. GB Pizza Co has something for everyone: whether you’re a visitor to Thanet or you live locally.

The Woolpack Inn in Warehorne is full of history having been a pub since the late 1500s. Now, the pub under the guidance of Julian Mellor, has turned its hand to excellent restaurant food at pub prices.

The Woolpack still keeps all the charm and charisma that you would expect from a local pub restaurant with a log fire every night throughout the winter months. The Woolpack is developing a glowing reputation for the quality of its food.

The restaurant serves a three-course meal for £15.95 and a two-course meal for £12.95 from Tuesday - Thursday. We offer a tasting menu of six-courses for £49. Every Thursday is steak night with two steaks from £20. Our 6 o’clock club which consists of a drink and a bar snack for £6 is very popular. On a Thursday we cater for our older guests with OAP’s being able to enjoy a roast dinner for £6 all day. On a Sunday we serve our Sunday roasts for £9.95 and on a Wednesday we have a carvery for just£8.95.

During the year we serve seasonal food including partridge, venison and pheasant; we also have special menus for Christmas, Valentines, Mother’s Day, Easter and Father’s Day.

For our ale drinkers we serve local ales which we lovingly care for all year round. We pride ourselves on being a family pub-restaurant; we welcome everybody including walkers and dogs (in the bar area). We put on live entertainment for our guests on the last Friday of
