ObituariesR.H, JonesAOCS has been informed of the deathof Raymond H. Jones, president ofEnviro-Chem Professional Serviceslnc., a consulting firm, in Minnetonka,Minnesota.

Mr. Jones had been an AOCSmember since 1953. He was a gradu-ate of the University of Chicago andwas working as plant chemist at theformer Swift & Co. soybean solventextraction facility in Champaign, illi-nois, when he joined AOCS.

He later worked for Darling &Company in Chicago. Illinois. beforejoining the Henkel Corporation inMinneapolis, where he became a vicepresident.

G_K KussGeorge E. Kuss, an AOCS membersince 1958, died at his Memphis, Ten-nessee, home on Aug. 17, 1996, ofheart failure. He was 66 years old.

Mr. Kuss began his career with TheHumko Corporation in the firm's pro-duction depanment. After a brief peri-od as a deodorizer operator, he movedinto the technical department wherehe began working as a research tech-nician in a lab shared with Alton E.Bailey. While there, he worked onsome of the projects that later provid-ed information for Mr. Bailey's Hand-book of lndustrial Fats and Oils.

After working several years in theresearch department, Mr. Kuss wasassigned duties in the technical ser-vices department, where he workedwith the production, engineering, andsales departments. During this time hewas part of the team that supervisedthe planning and construction of theoil refinery that Humko built in BuenaPark, California. He also was assignedto participate in management of thedesign, installation, and operation of

the Humko pilot plant in Memphis.There he had primary responsibilityfor developing new products andsupervising process improvement fea-sibility studies. He held two patentsfor processing of specially oils.

Mr. Kuss retired in early 1995 after47 years with the Humko organizationand its successor companies.

He is survived by his wife,Eleanor; three sons, Randy, Danny.and Jimmy, and their families; hismother, Eileen Walsingham; andseven grandchildren. The family hasrequested that memorial gifts be sentto Decatur Trinity Christian Church,2449 Altguria, Banlett, TN 38134.

John A. RothfusJohn A. Rothfus, a chemist and for-mer research leader at the U.S.Depanment of Agriculture's NationalCenter for Agricultural UtilizationResearch, died Sept. 10, 1996, in Peo-ria, Illinois. Dr. Rothfus received hisbachelor's degree with Phi BetaKappa honors from Drake Universityin 1955. and his doctorate in biochem-istry in 1960 from the University ofIllinois. He was an assistant professorat the University of Utah for two yearsand University of California for twoyears before he joined the USDAfacility in Peoria in 1965.

Dr. Rothfus had been an AOCSmember since 1980. He was a 1996recipient of the Archer Daniels Mid-land Award during the AOCS AnnualMeeting & Expo in indianapolis, Indi-ana, for his publications on computersimulations of seed protein. Dr. Roth-Ius also was a member of the Ameri-can Chemical Society and the NewYork Academy of Science.

Survivors include his wife, PaulaKay; a daughter and a son. •
