We are getting back to business as summer ends and our fall meetings begin. This is the build-up to our meeting in March which is dependent on all of us to make it the next “Best Hinman Ever.”

Thanks for your attendance at Mike Pruett’s lecture in September. I thought it was very informative and well presented. I appreciate Pat Yancey’s work as membership meeting program chairman. He is bringing in Dr. McCracken from UAB to give us a fresh view on implants. This lecture and dinner will be on November 12th at the Grand Hyatt. Make sure to mark your calenders for this informative and fun meeting. The subsidies that the Trustees provide for these meetings make the CE a real value.

I hope everyone noticed and enjoyed the changes in September’s Preview Review. Thanks are in order to Laura and the Hinman staff for suggesting the addition of the ‘Hinman Member Corner,’ where members can share some of their interests, hobbies and passions. This feature is a great way to bring more familiarity amongst one another and reveal our lives outside of dentistry. The Hinman staff never ceases to amaze. Their dedication, effort and work ethic are a true blessing for this organization. We should not take them for granted and our gratitude should be expressed regularly.

We want to encourage all our members to make an effort to meet our newer members. Introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. We hope to keep them together as a group at our membership meeting reception so we can all have a chance to greet and welcome them.

Housing brochures have been mailed, marking the first sign of Hinman 2013. March is just around the corner so make sure you get on a committee. If there is a

particular job or committee you would like to serve on, get in touch with the chairman and let him/her know, the earlier the better. Remember we are all required to serve on a committee at the meeting. This service entitles you to the many benefits Hinman offers: valuable CE lectures, Hinman receptions, subsidized annual meeting perks and wonderful opportunities to meet and work with our dental colleagues. The Hinman Trustees generously contribute to these benefits as well.

As president, I am learning so much about the Hinman Dental Society and it is enlightening. I’ve become much more in touch with our mission as a society and realize that we have to keep education as our main goal. There are many great times and much opportunity that come with an organization of this magnitude. The Hinman Trustees, the staff and the leadership take their roles seriously and are committed to continue our tradition of excellence. I would like for all of us in Hinman to work hard and have more fun than ever. Later,

Planning for our meeting in March is going very well. Thanks again to my program chairmen Drs. Max Ferguson and Roy McDonald for the time and effort that they have put in to make the meeting a success.

I want to highlight some of the courses that will take place at the meeting. We are very excited to have Dr. Pete Dawson speak at our meeting. We are honored to have him speak not only because of

what he has done for our profession but also because he limits when and where he speaks these days. He was an icon in dentistry when I graduated 28 years ago and is still espousing the concepts of occlusion and comprehensive dentistry today. He will be speaking with Dr. John Cranham on the “Timeless Principles in Restorative Dentistry” on Friday only.

Several different technologies will be addressed as well. Imitiaz Manji and Dr. Sameer Puri will be giving a hands-on course on CAD/CAM. Dr. Puri will also be giving an introductory course on CAD/CAM on Saturday for those who want to learn more about the technology. Dr. Dale Miles will be giving a participation course on cone-beam technology. Dr. Scott Droter will be

giving a participation course on reading and ordering MRI and CT scans. Dr. Al Wyatt will be giving several courses on lasers. To round things off, Mr. Glenn Lombardi will be speaking on websites and Ms. Laci Phillips will offer a course to get you started on social media.

You can see that it is going to be difficult to decide what to leave out at this year’s meeting. The pre-registration material will be coming soon. Be sure to invite all of your colleagues, including those you refer to or went to school with, Hinman non-members included. The meeting’s success depends on your involvement and commitment. Thank you for being an active Hinman member.

hinman exhibits… 70 years and still going strong

For many years, the Hinman Meeting was about traditional education by way of a classroom setting and learning the latest techniques, technologies and procedures. It wasn’t until 1942 that the Hinman Dental Meeting’s traditional mold was enhanced with the first exhibitor showroom. It started with just 14 exhibitors and has grown to what it is today with over 400 exhibiting companies and more than 900 booths. Some still use basic tables and some have elaborate island booths soaring at heights of 20 feet. There is plenty to learn when you visit the Hinman exhibitors, as they strive to educate the Hinman attendee with the latest the dental industry has to offer: everything from financing, informatics charting, materials, equipment and much more.

This year, the Hinman exhibits team embarked on a first time exhibitor campaign in an effort to attract the newest products, services and technologies in the market today. Since Hinman understands that ultimately, your focus is the end user or the patient, having the most up-to-date products and services is critical to giving the best patient care possible. Hinman’s first time exhibitor campaign not only attracts new exhibitors but it keeps them loyal by offering a concierge service for their first three years of consistent dedication to the show. As a Hinman Member, it is vital that you save your purchases for the meeting in March. By doing so, the exhibitor is able to validate their exhibiting experience with a measured return on their investment (ROI).

In addition to the first time exhibitor campaign, we welcome back the tried and true loyal exhibitor with open arms. They have dedicated 70 years to exhibiting at our show and stuck with us through the ups and downs of the economy, industry-wide acquisitions and mergers and of course, the

infamous tornado. These companies have realized the value of the Hinman attendee and are happy to be by our side during good times and bad.

Some other great things happening on the floor this year are: a classic car show, jewelry give-a-ways, a new Hinman Treasure Quest game, educational courses, a cocktail hour on Friday afternoon and a support-the-troops letter writing campaign. So, mark your calendars to visit the show floor in March, save your purchases and enjoy the great education and fun activities as The Tradition Continues.

Did you know? The Hinman Dental Society, via the Hinman Board of Trustees, has donated more than four million dollars over the past ten years to furthering dental education.

Do you wish you knew more about our Hinman Board of Trustees? The Trustees form the arm of the society that has the duty of being the “custodian of the reserve funds of the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting and invest[ing] these funds in a prudent manner” (Hinman Bylaws, Article V, Section 1). The Board of Trustees consists of six Hinman members in good standing who have served as a General Chairman of the Hinman Meeting.

The Trustees have the duty of reviewing all funding requests from various entities and distributing any funding that Hinman awards. Requests come mostly from regional university dental schools for a variety of needs, including specific educational programs (like the UT Hinman Student Research

Symposium or the UNC Hinman Lecture), faculty chair funding and scholarship fund contributions.

The Society is a major recipient of Trustee gifting as well. As a token of appreciation for the time members serve working at the Hinman Dental Meeting in March, the Trustees absorb more than half of the cost for members to attend all other meetings during the year. They also cover a substantial amount of the member cost for the annual meeting. For the cruise, this gift amounted to over $450 per member. Funding includes several other miscellaneous general office costs as well.

Lastly, the Hinman scholar program, which began in the mid 1980s, provides scholarships for dental students who have been chosen by their school for excellent achievement. In addition to the scholarship, Hinman scholars receive free registration to the Hinman Meeting, reimbursements for travel expenses, hotel accommodations during the meeting and also attendance at a luncheon in their honor. This past year, there were over 90 students who benefitted from Hinman scholarships, amounting to $222,500.

Geraldine Ferris,InternationalMission Dentist

Geraldine (Gerri) Ferris is a relatively new associate

member and now part-time Florida Periodontist who enjoys serving in several volunteer dental roles, recently including GMOM, and she is looking forward to working the Hinman meeting in 2013.

In the past she has been involved with mission dentistry work in third world countries, with her main focus being in Nablus, East Jerusalem, Gaza and other cities in Palestine. Her family immigrated from Syria, which is the main reason for her interest in the Middle East. She was able to take part in a special opportunity to teach Syrian dentists about periodontics, preventive perio and some surgical procedures back in the 1990’s and she stayed there for two years to serve in this capacity. Dr. Ferris has really enjoyed these mission experiences and has been “pleased that I have the skills and ability to give back to other dentists who don’t have the same opportunities that we have in the US.”

Dr. Ron CavolaDr. Cavola decided to join the society after an invitation from Max Ferguson at GMOM last year. He has been practicing for 25 years

and has been attending the Hinman meeting throughout the length of his career. Some of his hobbies include traveling, golf and spending time in New Orleans with his family.

Dr. Hamir ContractorDr. Contractor has been attending the Hinman meeting since 2000 and learned about the society in dental school. He is looking

forward to “[meeting] other dentists that are committed to continuing education and striving for the best care in their patients.” He is a tennis player and also enjoys spending time with his wife and son.

Dr. Gerri FerrisDr. Ferris was attracted to the society because of “the high quality member dentists, as well as the high quality meeting.” She has

practiced since 1982 and now works part-time. In her spare time, she enjoys golf, tennis, grandchildren and shopping.

Dr. Lia Gallo-UrregoDr. Gallo-Urrego appreciates that Hinman is family oriented and likes that she can meet new people with good principles

and beliefs. She practiced in Columbia, South America starting in 1993 and earned her DDS degree in 2007 from the University of Colorado. In her spare time, she enjoys interior design projects and

traveling.

Dr. Michael HackmanDr. Hackman learned about the society through the Medical College of Georgia and began

attending the meeting in dental school, back in 2001. The most rewarding experience for him in dentistry is “the experience of rehabilitating someone back to health.” He enjoys golf and soccer as hobbies, and also playing with his son and golden retriever.

Dr. Julius ParkDr. Park learned about the society from Stuart Loos, who stressed the importance of organized dentistry to him. He is a

pediatric dentist in Woodstock and finds that “interacting with [his] young patients and helping them develop good oral hygiene habits from an early age into adulthood” is most rewarding about his career. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, family time, playing the guitar or salsa dancing!

Dr. Erin PickwickDr. Pickwick learned about the Hinman Dental Society through her mother, Kathy Huber, and has been attending

Hinman annual meetings since the age of twelve. She practices in Suwanee and finds that “[helping] people, even when it is in the smallest, most unassuming ways or even in ways that don’t involve their teeth at all” rewarding. She enjoys family time, cooking and the outdoors during her spare time.

The Hinman Dental Society’s membership continues to grow. Every year, the Society welcomes a number of new members. Our newest members have found out about the society through a variety of different ways, but all are excited about their membership and to represent an organization with such high standards and reputation. Some of our newest members share their background in dentistry, with Hinman and also what they enjoy doing in their spare time.

Shrimp and GritsSubmitted by Bruce Ashendorf

1 lb shrimp-peeled and deveined – save shells8 pcs or 3/4c smoked bacon or country ham, chopped, adjust as needed for flavor1/2 c chopped onion2 cloves garlic-chopped1/2 c green, red or mixed bell pepper, chopped6 c chicken stock3/4 c course stone ground grits and 3/4c quick grits2 c whole milk

Mix shrimp shells in with chicken stock – heat on med high, bringing to a low boil. Reduce by half. Drain and discard shells, saving 1c of drained liquid. Set to the side. This can be done in advance. Add milk, return to low boil, add grits, and return to boil, stirring during this time. Reduce the temp to low or simmer and cook about 1-1 ½ hours adding the extra stock as needed for the proper consistency (if they are cooking enough you will need to add). Taste and season as needed. Chicken stock can be salty so depending on the kind used, you may not need to salt the grits.About 15 minutes before grits are finished begin the shrimp. In a large heavy skillet over medium heat cook bacon. When bacon is soft and clear but not crispy carefully drain most of the grease, leaving enough to cook the remainder ingredients. Add onion, cook 3-4 minutes, add garlic, cook 3-4 minutes. Bacon should be crisping and the onion and garlic should be clear, add bell pepper and cook 1-2 minutes, add shrimp and cook until done (only a few minutes, they cook quickly). Serve. Serves 4.

Bring large skillet of water just to simmer over medium-low heat. Sprinkle water with salt. Working with 1 egg at a time, crack into small bowl and slide egg into simmering water. Cook eggs until whites are cooked through but yolks are still runny, 3 to 4 minutes. Using slotted spoon, carefully transfer poached eggs to medium bowl filled with ice water. Eggs can be made up to 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate in same bowl of ice water.Bring broth to simmer in medium saucepan; cover to keep warm. Heat oil in heavy large saucepan over medium heat. Add bacon and cook until crisp, stirring occasionally. Using slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper towels to drain. Add leeks to drippings in pan; cook until soft but not brown, stirring often, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer 2 generous

tablespoonfuls leeks to small bowl; reserve for garnish. Add rice to pan; stir 1 to 2 minutes. Add wine; stir until absorbed, about 2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup warm broth to saucepan; stir until broth is absorbed. Repeat adding broth and stirring until rice is tender but still firm to bite and sauce is creamy, stirring almost constantly, about 23 minutes total. Add bacon, chopped parsley, butter, and 2 tablespoons cheese. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.Meanwhile, heat poached eggs in medium skillet of simmering water just until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Divide risotto among 6 bowls. Top risotto in each bowl with poached egg. Sprinkle egg with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with parsley leaves, additional cheese, and reserved leeks. Serves 6.

6 large eggs 5 cups low-salt chicken broth

1 tablespoon olive oil 6 slices thick-cut bacon, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces 2 cups thinly sliced leeks (white and pale green parts only; about 2 large) 1 1/2 cups arborio rice or medium-grain white rice (about 10 ounces)

3/4 cup dry white wine 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh Italian parsley 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan cheese Fresh Italian parsley leaves (for garnish) Additional finely grated Parmesan cheese (for garnish)

Cake6 eggs1 pkg yellow cake mix (with the pudding in the mix)1 small package vanilla Jello pudding½ c water½ c vegetable oil½ c white rum1.5 c chopped pecan pieces

Glaze1 stick butter1 c sugar¼ c rum¼ c water

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine all cake ingredients except the pecans. Mix for 2.5 minutes until smooth. Fold in 1-1/2 cups of pecan pieces. Pour into greased Bundt pan (spray heavily). Bake exactly 56 minutes. Meanwhile, mix glaze ingredients together in saucepan. Bring to a boil while stirring. Immediately after removing cake from oven, make holes with toothpicks in top and pour hot glaze over cake. Let cool and remove from pan. Cake stores well and can be frozen.
