MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

BOARD OF DIRECTORS EXECUTIVEJoel Steinberg Board Chair Allon Shapiro Secretary

David Kaplan Vice Chair Barry Rivelis Treasurer

MEMBERSJared Friedman, Stephen Glanzberg, Jeremy Horwitz, Rabbi Jonathan Infeld,

Karen James, Bill Kaplan, Elliott Lipsey, Frieda Miller, Leah Rubin

As I reflect upon my 8 years as a JFSA Director, while writing my final report as Board Chair, several feelings stand out. Primary among those feelings is gratitude. I am grateful that Neil Pollock introduced me to JFSA thus providing the vehicle through which I could give back to our community and fulfill my desire to help those in need. My gratitude extends to the Agency’s selfless employees who have a profound impact on the lives of JFSA’s clients on a daily basis. It has truly been an honour to support the efforts of these employees and the Agency’s valued volunteers.

I am also grateful for the tremendous support the Jewish Federation’s Diane Switzer, Stephen Gaerber, Shelley Rivken and Ezra Shanken have provided to JFSA and me personally. Finally, I am extremely grateful for the tireless efforts of my fellow Directors. Together with the employees we have accomplished a great deal – strengthening JFSA and beginning the process of positioning the Agency to meet our community’s evolving needs going forward. These accomplishments include:

• Restoring fiscal stability after several years of poor financial performance – with special recognition going out to Barry Rivelis, Chair of JFSA’s Finance Committee;

• Improving the Agency’s culture by taking steps necessary to create a meritocracy – with much thanks to Leah Rubin, the Board’s resident HR professional;

• Moving to a needs based approach to determining programmatic requirements and priorities;

• Relocating our offices, enabling the Agency to significantly lower costs and increase efficiency in larger premises that are closer to our client base – primarily the result of great work done by Director Allon Shapiro and numerous community members that volunteered services;

• Strengthening ties with Jewish Federation, JFSA’s largest source of funding. Director Karen James has led our efforts in this regard;

• Raising the profile and professionalism of the Innovator’s Lunch, JFSAs largest annual fundraising event.

Special thanks to Audrey Moss and her team of employees and volunteers for their operational excellence, to Allon Shapiro for securing corporate sponsorships and to Table Captains for filling seats.

Given sufficient resources and the right environment, JFSA’s management and employees have responded by:

• Expanding Home Support substantially, now employing 66 workers and serving over 500 seniors per month in the Jewish and broader community;

• Growing the critically important YOU Matter Program with community partners to address youth at risk through education, prevention and intervention;

• Finding work for 70% to 80% of employment service clients within a six-month period; and

• Embarking on a course to research and develop a comprehensive strategy to significantly increase food security for Jews in Greater Vancouver.

I would be remiss not to acknowledge Richard Fruchter’s significant contributions to the foregoing accomplishments. Richard is a consummate professional and the Agency has been extremely fortunate to enjoy the benefit of his sage counsel. With Richard leading the search for a new CEO I am confident that we will soon hire an outstanding leader to take JFSA into the future.

To conclude, on behalf of the Board I offer a sincere thank-you to you - our community members who have generously supported JFSA with both their money and time. We are honoured that you continue to make the Agency a priority for charitable giving and volunteer service. JFSA could not provide critical programs that enhance the quality of life for individuals and families in our community without your continued support.

Please enjoy the Fall edition of Family Matters.

EMPLOYMENT

JFSA Programs

A new start to lifeGiving up what is most comfortable or familiar to you lies at the heart of the

immigrant experience and for many of JFSA’s clients making this transition can be

difficult. For Otto1, employment in the trades gave him the stability he needed to

create a new life in Canada and support his young family, but after seven years of

hard, steady work he had become frustrated. Dissatisfied with his work and fearful

that his employer would fire him if he voiced his concerns, Otto once again had to

give up what was familiar and began to search for a new career.

With a wife and small children to care for, this was a huge change for Otto and

one he couldn’t afford to get wrong. Unsure of what to do or how to transfer

his skills, he turned to JFSA who matched him with Employment Counsellor Naz

Gurbuz. Through personalized one-on-one support and ample encouragement,

Naz helped Otto to identify a new career path in maintenance management

that would make the transition between jobs less intimidating by applying

All of their hours of practicing and

So, thank you for thinking about us and Shana Tova to all of you and your families.

Dear Director and Members of Jewish Family Services Agency,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kindness for thinking about us and providing us with a very much appreciated parcel of food that we never see during the year and value even more at this time of the year when we are thinking of family and meals with our families.

Thank you for also sending a wonderful Rosh Hashanah greeting card. I don’t

Who doesJFSA supports the community through many well-known programs like the Jewish Food Bank, the YOU Matter program for at-risk youth, and its At-Home Seniors program, but what if you don’t see yourself fitting into one of those categories?

Can JFSA still help you or your family?

The answer is yes! Although these programs serve specific segments of our

community that we recognize are in special need of support, you can also

rely on a comprehensive array of services provided by JFSA staff that we

call Self Sufficiency & Independence. From housing

and financial literacy to counselling and resettlement

including helping you get a job, these talented

professionals are able to assist you in overcoming

the social, emotional, and financial challenges that

you’re facing. You may not need them right now,

but in the event of an emergency they can play

an important role in stabilizing your life.

Sara Schwartz1 didn’t think that she would

need our help, but with the unexpected

passing of her husband who had been

supporting her and their three children she

needed a way of feeding, clothing, and

sheltering her family until she could find

a job herself. An immigrant with no work

experience in over a decade, Sara quickly

used up her savings and went into debt

before being referred to JFSA by a friend.

Within a few short weeks they were able

to receive the following help:

If you would like to learn more about the services we offer, or if you or someone you care about qualifies for Basic Resources, please visit www.jfsa.ca/basic-resources

We are pleased to report that Sara and her children are now on the road to

recovery and are beginning to return to normal life. Unfortunately, her story is

one that we are hearing more and more frequently. In the last year alone we

have seen a 25% increase in the number of families that use our services to stay

healthy and safe, in many cases requiring access to more than one service at a

time on a regular basis. We are grateful for the allocation we receive from the

Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver whose financial funding allows us to

provide this support when our community needs it most.

When your family needs help, JFSA is the agency you can turn to, to support you and those you love.

SENIORS SENIORS

Seniors Lunchcruises, grateful to the program for

having brought them together.

Birthdays are celebrated with

family, entertainment is provided,

educational speakers visit and

political discussions are held, all

contributing to the enjoyment of the

lunches. Many attendees say it is

the highlight of their week and they

wouldn’t miss coming for anything.

The volunteers who drive and those

who serve the meals have been

involved in the program for an average

of 10 years. They say they get more

out of their participation, not only

helping seniors to enjoy a day out but

learning from them - the seniors are

role models in how to age gracefully.

Omnitsky has been JFSA’s steady

partner in the program throughout

the years and a strong relationship

has been forged with the owner,

Eppy Rappaport.

Jewish Family Service Agency’s Seniors

Lunch program has been running for

more than 15 years. Among its many

benefits, it provides socialization and

nutritious (kosher) meals, both important

contributors to quality of life.

The program takes place at Temple

Sholom every Tuesday at noon.

Volunteers take participants to and from

the lunch, which costs $10 (with some

subsidies provided).

At the lunches, seniors reconnect with

peers they haven’t seen for years,

make new friends and retain their link

to the Jewish community. Long-lasting

friendships have been made, and some

seniors have chosen to travel together on

All seniors are invited to attend the lunches. For more information or registration, contact JFSA at 604-257-5151, ext. 274

Seniors Lunch is made possible through the generous support of:

Home Support: Marilyn Greene

Every Tuesday Marilyn Greene is

picked up by a volunteer to attend

JFSA’s Seniors Lunch because

we make it easy for her to relax,

socialize, and have fun with friends.

Appreciative of how this type of

support has improved her quality

of life, she contacted our Home Support program to provide similar

help at home.

A social worker for over 35 years,

Marilyn doesn’t have the same energy

that she used to and now finds

cleaning, doing laundry, and cooking

to be tiring; admitting that many of

these chores likely wouldn’t get done

if she didn’t receive help. Fortunately,

she has home support workers like

Bonnie who come in to assist her

with these tasks and take her out

shopping or for walks.

What Marilyn loves most about the

help that she receives is that it is

so personalized. Unlike a long-term

facility where one worker would

have to assist multiple people, the

one-to-one relationship she has

developed with Bonnie ensures that

If you or someone you know are a senior and interested in receiving support at home, please contact Elaine Perzow at 604.637.3319 or [email protected].

her unique needs are understood and

that she receives dedicated care. When

talking with friends who do not receive

home support, she can easily see the

difference it has made in her life and

recommends that they contact JFSA Home Support. Although drawing a

pension, she finds the help she receives

to be easily affordable and doesn’t

notice the cost when compared to the

benefit of being able to live in her own

place and continue to do the things she

loves. Marilyn is better at home, and so

are you!

From her first day to her last, Anna Ruth Leith z’l loved to learn and to help others. This brought her into close contact with the Jewish and broader communities around her.

A native of BC, her intelligence was recognized by the late Sam Rothstein, the original Director of the School of Librarianship at UBC. He recommended that she consider leaving her first career as a lab technician and pursue a post graduate degree in library science. With this encouragement, Anna attended the University of Washington where she obtained her Master’s degree.

Following graduation Anna returned to Vancouver and joined the UBC Library System. For 25 years, Anna was the Head Librarian of the Woodward Biomedical Library and also taught in the School of Librarianship.

Anna was an active member of

IN MEMORY OF

Anna Leiththe National Council of Jewish Women Canada and Canadian Hadassah-Wizo. She was a caring and compassionate woman who mentored many young librarians over her career. In addition to her work, Anna loved to travel and enjoyed reading and listening to music.

Passing away without having married, Anna left a significant portion of her estate to a number of Jewish and non- Jewish organizations, including Jewish Family Service Agency, the Brier Home, the Waldman Jewish Public Library, the Jewish Historical Society, Temple Sholom, institutions supported by NCJW Canada and Hadassah Canada in Israel, the Vancouver Public Library, the Library Schools at UBC and the University of Washington, the Vancouver Public Library, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Vancouver Symphony and Friends of Chamber Music

JFSA is truly thankful for Anna having included us in her planned giving. As a community we are worse for her loss, but better for her generosity and will do our best to honour her memory in all of the work that we do to help those in need in the Jewish community.

Like Anna, your legacy can provide help to individuals and families in their greatest time of need.

For more information on creating your legacy, contact Jason Campbell, Interim Director of Development and Communications.

Direct line: 604.637.3306 or [email protected].

The remarkably intelligent and resilient Florence Franks z’l succeeded in overcoming all the obstacles encountered after the early loss of her husband, Myer. She ran a thriving business and raised two sons. But, despite having been a straight-”A” student in high school, she had never been able to pursue a university education because of her family’s financial constraints. In tribute to their devoted mother, Norman and Gordon Franks have established the Florence E. Franks Memorial Bursary fund, to accord a promising young Jewish woman in Vancouver the opportunity that their mother did not have: four years of university studies.

After a lengthy selection process, Norman and JFSA are pleased to announce the bursary’s recipient: Rachel Ferdman.

An extremely bright and personable young woman, Rachel graduated from high school with excellent marks, and with her hopes set on university. The Bursary, for which she is tremendously grateful, allows her to fulfil her dream of studying Psychology and Biology at the University of Victoria.

The Bursary is not solely a recognition of academic excellence. Rachel’s selection also was based upon her initiative and her compassionate nature. She regularly worked as a volunteer socializing exotic birds, to accustom them to being handled and thus to bond with future owners. She also volunteered with the Paediatric OCD Program at the Child and Family Research Institute at Children’s Hospital, assisting with data for research coordinators. She hopes to pursue a career that involves working with and caring for animals through research, conservation, and rehabilitation. Norman Franks believes that the compassion, intellect, and integrity that he recognized upon meeting Rachel both reflect and honour his mother’s generous, loving spirit.

Rachel moved to Victoria in September, where she now is studying toward her goal.

We are most grateful to Norman and Gordon Franks, whose generosity empowers our community. Thanks to them, we are able to provide opportunities to talented individuals.
