SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - ERUCC is fortunate to have several scholarship programs available to our
members as they seek educational opportunities to develop knowledge and skill in realization of their full
potential.
The McCardell Scholarship Fund was established by Mr. Robert McCardell in honor and memory of members of
the McCardell family. The Kieffer Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Henri L.G. Kieffer, pastor of
this church from 1910-1946. There are also scholarship funds in memory of Liz Coffey. Contributions to these
Scholarship Funds by members and friends of the church are always welcomed.
These scholarships are gifts to church members for post-secondary undergraduate education and are awarded by
the Scholarship Committee. The awards are based on the quality of the candidate's plan for use of the funds, the
ability and promise of the applicant, and the need for financial assistance. The aid may continue for subsequent
years after an interview with the Scholarship Committee, submission of intent to reapply, and a transcript of
grades for the current year.
Scholarship applications are available through the Church Office for new applicants (301-662-2762) or
[email protected].) Students wishing to renew scholarships must also contact the Church Office providing the
information requested. All application materials must be submitted to the Scholarship Committee through the
Church Office by the April 30 deadline.
PASTOR DANIEL
At the recent meeting of the UCC General Synod in Cleveland, I
was the recipient of many words of thanks for the generosity of ERUCC.
People had been reading the Spring/Summer issue of the UCC Still
Speaking magazine, which included the 2014 United Church of Christ
Annual Report and a listing of the Top 50 Giving Congregations.
Celebrate….we are number six in giving to Our Church’s Wider Mission.
Sixth in the UCC!
One of the reasons we are able to be generous in giving to mission
is because of the estate gifts we have received over the years. Many of
the funds received during Pastor Wenner’s ministry were designated for
mission by the Consistory. Their leadership has enabled our
congregation to remain a leadership church in the community and in the
UCC.
Have you considered remembering ERUCC in your will? Have
you considered how your gift could make a difference for the future of the
church that has cared and supported you? Have you considered how your
gift could play a vital role in providing funding for mission, our
educational programs, and our buildings?
One of my fellow trustees at Catawba College recently wrote
about one of his first major gifts to the college – a $1,000,000 life
insurance policy. He received a favorable tax benefit and the chance to
assure a substantial future contribution to his alma mater. The College
was named the policy owner and beneficiary. Junie encourages Catawba
alumni and friends to consider planned gifts, however big or small, calling
them, “affordable and creative.” (continued on page 2)
15 W. Church Street, Frederick 21701 Phone: 301-662-2762 - www.erucc.org Page 2
We are aware of at least one member of ERUCC who has done as Junie did for Catawba and purchased
a life insurance policy, naming the church as beneficiary.
Leave a lasting legacy to the area of ERUCC’s ministry that means the most to you. Your gift will have
a lasting impact.
If you are interested in further conversation about a planned gift, please contact the church office and a
member of the Finance Committee will provide you with a variety of options for giving.
TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY WITH PASTOR DANIEL
Sept 1 – Oct 20 (Downstairs Conference Room)
The Greatest Prayer: Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message of the Lord’s Prayer
by John Dominic Crossan
From the author:
It is Christianity’s greatest prayer. It
is also Christianity’s strangest
prayer. It is prayed by all Christians
but it never mentions Christ. It is
prayed in all churches but it never
mentions Church. It is prayed on all
Sundays but it never mentions
Sunday. It is also called the “Lord’s
Prayer” but it never mentions “Lord.”
It is prayed by fundamentalist Christians but it
never mentions the inspired inerrancy of the Bible,
the virgin birth, the miracles, the atoning death, and
bodily resurrection of Christ. It is prayed by
evangelical Christians but it never mentions the
evangelism or gospel. It is prayed by Pentecostal
Christians but it never mentions ecstasy or the Holy
Spirit.
It is prayed by Congregational, Presbyterian,
Episcopalian, and Roman Catholic Christians but it
never mentions Congregation, Priest, Bishop, or
Pope. It is prayed by Christians who split from one
another over this or that doctrine but it never
mentions a single one of those doctrines.
It is prayed by Christians who focus on Christ’s
substitutionary sacrificial atonement for human sin
but it never mentions Christ, substitution, sacrifice,
atonement, or sin.
It is prayed by Christians who focus on the next life
in heaven or in hell but it never mentions the next
life, heaven. or hell. It is prayed by Christians who
emphasize what it never mentions and also prayed
by Christians who ignore what it does.
You could respond, of course, that there is nothing
strange there at all. It is, you might say, a Jewish
prayer from the Jewish Jesus, hence nothing
Christian or even Christian-Jewish is present. But
that only invites us to start the question of
strangeness all over again. It does not mention
Covenant or Law, Temple or Torah, Circumcision
or Purity, and so on and on and on.
What if the Lord’s Prayer is neither a Jewish prayer
for Jews nor yet a Christian prayer for Christians?
What if it is—as this book suggests—a prayer from
the heart of Judaism on the Matthew Christianity for
the conscience of the world? What if it is—as this
book suggests—a radical manifesto and a hymn of
hope for all humanity in language addressed to all
the earth?

like her to order a copy of the book for you.)

WORSHIP NOTES
(Worship Notes are from Seasons of the Spirit and Pulpit Resource)
AUGUST 2 - The writer of Ephesians in 4: 1-16 tells the people to forbear one another in love in order that the
Body of Christ, the church, might be edified. In a reminder of the importance of nourishing the spirit with food
that draws eternal life, Jesus calls himself the bread of life in John 6:24–35, bread that sustains the Body of
Christ.
This morning we will be singing hymns from the Evangelical and Reformed Hymnal and sharing
communion at the chancel rail.
AUGUST 9 - Our first lesson, Ephesians 4: 25-5:2 reminds us that the new life in Christ is lived in love. Jesus
reminds his disciples that he is the bread of life in John 6:35, 41–51, and models the true life lived in God.
Participants in this year’s Vacation Bible School will share some of the songs they learned during the
week. Guest preacher this Sunday will be Rabbi Dan Sikowitz as we welcome members of Congregation Kol
Ami.
AUGUST 16 - In today’s passage from Ephesians 5: 15-20, the people of the early church are encouraged to
live with wisdom, to use their time well, and to reject foolishness. People listening to Jesus struggle to discern
his message in John 6:51–58. Just as God provides wisdom to Solomon, Jesus provides spiritual nourishment to
the people. Together, these passages affirm the centrality of God’s gift of wisdom in the life of faith.
AUGUST 23 - The first reading from Ephesians 6: 10-20 is a reflection on the spiritual forces that get in the
way of our living as God calls us to live, as well as a description of the ways in which God prepares and
protects us for the challenges of the life of faith. This week’s focus passage calls believers to prayer and
perseverance, even amid trying times.
In John 6:56–69, Jesus’ own disciples seem to be offended by his teachings, yet Peter recognizes that in
Jesus is the “Holy One of God.” In Christ, the dwelling place for God, they have found their home and strength
to go on when others have turned back.
Today we will be celebrating our annual Blessing of the Backpacks as we pray for another school year
and ask God’s blessing upon students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Students are invited to bring their
backpacks and teachers and administrator their book bags.
AUGUST 30 - In James 1: 17-27, Christians are urged to be doers of the word and not merely hearers. We
actively love Christ through our deeds of mercy. A controversy arises in Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23, over the
failure of Jesus’ followers to obey the ritual demands of the Law. Jesus replies that his critics have abandoned
the real meaning of the Law for the sake of human tradition.
MID-WEEK SUMMER SERVICE: Wednesday, August 12, 6-7:30 p.m. – cook out in
the yard behind the church and a brief time of worship. We’ll start with supper
and a time of fellowship by singing, praying, and a time of reflection. We hope
you’ll plan to come for this mid-week time to reconnect with God and with
each other!

The Last Runaway:
A Novel by Tracy Chevalier
Hosted by Pat Hevner
A powerful journey
brimming with color and
drama, The Last Runaway is
New York Times bestselling
author Tracy Chevalier’s vivid
exploration of an iconic
chapter in American history.
Ohio 1850. For a
modest English Quaker
stranded far from home, life is
a trial. Untethered from the moment she leaves
England, fleeing personal disappointment, Honor
Bright is forced by family tragedy to rely on
strangers in an alien, untamed landscape. Drawn
into the clandestine activities of the Underground
Railroad, a network helping runaway slaves escape
to freedom, Honor befriends two exceptional people
who embody the startling power of defiance.
Eventually she must decide if she too can act on
what she believes in, whatever the personal cost.
SEPTEMBER 22
The Goldfinch
by Donna Tartt
Hosted by Patti Patterson
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker,
miraculously survives an accident that kills his
mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in
by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his
strange new home on Park
Avenue, disturbed by
schoolmates who don't know
how to talk to him, and
tormented above all by his
longing for his mother, he clings
to the one thing that reminds
him of her: a small, mysteriously
captivating painting that
ultimately draws Theo into the
underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the
drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of
an antiques store where he works. He is alienated
and in love--and at the center of a narrowing, ever
more dangerous circle

As always, we thank you for your support of ERUCC. These figures reflect income and expenses through one-half of the
year. Our giving remains far below the amount required to support the annual budget and the necessary giving for the
future building project. Giving continues to be our most difficult issue.
As you read this report, remember that an over on the income side is good news, while an under on the expense side is
good news. If you have any questions about this report or any other financial matters of the church, please contact Connie
Golleher, chair of the Finance Committee, or Allen Flora, Treasurer.
Quarterly statements were mailed during the week of July 13. Please review your statement carefully, and if you have any

Growing in Faith - Building in Hope - Now is the Time! - Leave a Legacy
One of the unique parts of our historic building campaign is to offer naming rights to portions of the new and renovated
spaces for significant donations. This is an opportunity for individuals, families or even groups to leave a lasting legacy.
We currently have four (4) of the eight (8) spaces claimed:
The Main Foyer ($100,000) – Penny (Pilgrim) and Bill George donated in honor and memory of Penny’s
grandfather Dr. Heni L. Kieffer our pastor from 1910 until 1946. The plans call for it to showcase artwork.
Nursery ($100,000) – The Hoffman family donated in honor and memory of Melanie. She was a longtime
advocate for children and education.
Multipurpose room #1 ($50,000) – Anonymous donor in honor and memory of Liz Coffey, this is to become the
youth and young adult room.
Multipurpose Room #2 ($50,000) – Anonymous donor, name/designation to be determined later.
The spaces that remain are:
Community Room – $500,000
Choir/Music Room – $75,000
Kitchen – $75,000
Multipurpose Room #3 – $50,000
If you would like to discuss making a donation for any of the remaining spaces or if you would like to make or discuss
other donations, please contact Will Duncan.
