~Written by Lisa Wideman, Chief Operating Officer of MOWWM Here at Meals on Wheels Western Michigan we are all about senior nutrition. Senior Nutrition programs such as Congregate Meals (Dining Sites), Senior Pantries and our well-known Meals on Wheels programs all work together to keep our older adult friends and families safe and independent—helping them to age in place. We know that 1 in 6 seniors struggle with hunger. We know that 10,000 people are turning 60 every day. Families are struggling to take care of mom and dad from afar and often are living in poverty as well. Ensuring older adults do not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from is

critical to maintaining independence. Here in Kent County, we are fortunate to have four programs that support senior nutrition and independence.

Congregate Meals (Dining Sites): Congregate meals are targeted to more mobile older adults. A well-balanced, nutritious meal each day along with social engagement, helps prevent the downward spiral of isolation. Dining sites have a wide variety of activities that interest older adults.

Home Delivered Meals: Home delivered meals help older adults maintain their independence in several ways. Well balanced, nutritious meals are provided based on an assessment of client’s needs. Clients may receive up to 14 meals per week, based on their how much support is needed. A wide variety of meals are available, including texture modified and, if necessary, the ability to choose meals that meet people’s special dietary needs. Every client receives a comprehensive assessment, which is geared toward ensuring our meals meet each client’s needs, but also identifies other needs they may have. Often meals are the first call for help and we find they need much more than just meals. This allows us to make appropriate referrals to other services. Our assessors connect them with other services available to them. Each client is

assigned a priority which, in emergencies, helps us determine our action steps. Our drivers provide a much-needed social connection and safety check. We are in fact, much more than a meal. It is not uncommon to find a client who has fallen and needs help. To ensure they are safe, we follow up on every concern reported by our drivers and on every client who does not answer the door.

Senior Pantry: Our senior pantry network is made possible through the Kent County Senior Millage. This service is targeted to older adults who are mobile and can prepare meal for themselves. Seniors can shop twice per month and receive a supply of groceries which include a variety of foods such as meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy and breads.

Senior Project Fresh: This program enables older adults to obtain coupons along with a nutrition class for use on Michigan grown produce at local farmers markets. This enables seniors to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in their diets which is a documented benefit in prevention and treatment of chronic disease.

Ways to Wellness

Everybody’s Irish on

St. Patrick’s Day!

Every time I write my newsletter article I have to think

about what month I’m writing for and what stands out

about that month. The first thought that comes to mind

for March is St. Patrick’s Day. It’s funny how so many

of us get excited about this holiday. I have heard it said

that, “In America everybody is a little Irish on St.

Patrick’s Day.”

I really am Irish, not just on St. Patrick’s Day!

Truthfully, I always think of my heritage as a bit of a

melting pot. There’s German, Danish, Swedish, and

Irish that I know of. So I feel like I can legitimately

claim to be Irish. My grandfather used to have a plaque

hanging in his house that said,

“May you always have work for your hands to do.

May your pockets hold always a coin or two.

May the sun shine bright on your windowpane.

May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.

May the hand of a friend always be near you.

And may God fill your heart with gladness

to cheer you.”

There are a lot of Irish blessings. This one always

makes me smile– partially because it makes me think

of my grandpa, but also because it just has a lot of

goodness in it. It reminds me of how Senior Neighbors

addresses wellness in so many different ways.

I’ve shared these different types of wellness in the past,

but I’d like to do it again, focusing on this Irish blessing.

Purposeful Wellness–“May you always have work for

your hands to do.” Having purpose and meaning in life

means so much to us. We all want to know that we can

contribute and give back. Work or volunteerism are two

ways to make this happen.

Financial Wellness—“May your pockets always hold a

coin or two.” Financial wellness is an obvious one—

after all, we need money to buy the basic needs we

have.

“Emotional Wellness—“May the sun shine bright on

your window pane; May the rainbow be certain to follow

each rain.” Emotional wellness can be difficult to

maintain. Depression and isolation can be intensified

by physical pain. Finding the bright spot in days filled

with gloominess can be wearing. Uncertainly and

anxiety are unhealthy. Our centers and our case

management team are often the rainbows after the rain.

Social Wellness—“May the hand of a friend always be

near you.” We know the importance of the

relationships you have made in exercise classes and at

our centers. We know that having each other to talk to

each day makes your days better and we are glad to be

able to provide places for you to do that.

Spiritual Wellness—“And may God fill your heart with

gladness to cheer you.” Spiritual wellness is not

necessarily about certain religious beliefs. Maybe you

have other view points on what brings you spiritual

wellness. I just encourage you to find whatever it is

that makes you feel complete and happy.

So this Pt. Paddy’s Day, be Irish and find all these

areas of wellness! May the Luck O’ the Irish be with

you!

Be Well!

1939 March Madness is Born The University of Oregon defeats Ohio State University 46–33 on March 27, 1939 to win the first-ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The Final Four, as the tournament became known, has grown exponentially in size and popularity since 1939. By 2005, college basketball had become the most popular sporting event among gamblers, after the Super Bowl. The majority of that betting takes place at tournament time, when Las Vegas, the internet and office pools around the country see action from sports enthusiasts and once -a-year gamblers alike. For the first 12 years of the men’s tournament, only eight teams were invited to participate. That number grew steadily until a 65-team tournament format was unveiled in 2001. After a “play-in” game between the 64th and 65th seeds, the tournament breaks into four regions of 16 teams. The winning teams from those regions comprise the Final Four who meet in that year’s host city to decide the championship. The NCAA held its first women’s basketball tournament in 1982. The women’s tournament started with 32 teams, expanding to 64 teams before the 1994 season. Today, the women’s format echoes the men’s, with play in four regions culminating in a Final Four held in a single location. The championship is played the day after the men’s, concluding the college basketball season. The most dominant team in women’s tournament history has been the Tennessee Volunteers, who won six championships under renowned coach Pat Summit from 1973 to 2006. The Connecticut Huskies are second, with five championships under coach Geno Auriemma. Past women’s Most Outstanding Player winners include Cheryl Miller of USC, Diana Taurasi of Connecticut and Chamique Holdsclaw of Tennessee; all went on to become stars of the WNBA.
