Thanksgiving and Veteran’s Day are both in the month of

November. This week, during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol,

a Congressional Gold Medal was presented to honor the

contributions of the more than 260,000 Filipino and Filipino-

American soldiers during World War II. On July 26, 1941,

President Franklin D. Roosevelt called into service all “organized military

forces” of the former U.S. colony; among those that responded were the

Philippine Commonwealth Army and the Philippine Scouts.

It’s a recognition that comes seven decades after these very same vets were

denied benefits promised for their service. Filipino vets, many in their 80s and

90s, along with family members of surviving and deceased veterans were

among the hundreds who attended the ceremony held Wednesday, October

25, 2017 at the Nations Capitol.

The bill to grant the Gold Medal, was introduced by Senator. Mazie K.

Hirono and Representative Tulsi Gabbard, both from Hawaii and both in

attendance at the ceremony. (Yay, for the home team!) The bill passed the

Senate and House last year and President Barack Obama signed it into law in

December.

“They battled not only the enemy, but they battled starvation and

malnutrition,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said. “But they never lost sight of

the cause, and they never accepted defeat.” Other combat outfits that have

been awarded this honor for their service include: Japanese-American Nisei

soldiers of World War II Montford Point Marines, the first African-American

U.S. Marines, The 65th Infantry Regiment Borinqueneers of Puerto Rico.

At Wednesday’s ceremony, spokesperson Celestino Almeda, a 100-year-old

Filipino veteran said, “Many have passed away waiting 75 years for this time

to come. I am an American soldier, I am a warrior and a member of a team

and I believe I served the people of the United States.” He also thanked his

fellow soldiers, including those who could not be there, “for sharing this

glorious day.”

He closed with “As the saying goes, old soldiers never

die, they just fade away, thank you all — and God bless

America.” He said, to applause and a standing ovation.

With Aloha,

The Chado Urasenke Tankokai Maui Association will conduct a Kencha-shiki (traditional Japanese memorial

tea ceremony) in honor and memory of Hideko (Heidi) Zwick. Using many of the tea ceremony items generously

donated to Roselani Place by Ed and Heidi Zwick. There will be sweets and matcha green tea for attendees. Music

will be provided on the Koto, the traditional Japanese stringed instrument.

Urasenke is one of three major schools (methods) of Japan’s tea ceremony, and Maui’s Urasenke tea club was first

established in 1988 at the Rinzai Zen Mission, in Paia. The club was formally recognized by the Grand Tea Master

from Kyoto, Sen Soshitsu XV, upon his visit to Paia in 1990. He again honored Maui’s tea association with visits

to Paia for their 15th and 25th anniversaries in 2005 and 2015. The association’s seven members meet every month

to practice the way of tea under the motto of “Peacefulness through a bowl of tea”, and they have offered many tea

ceremonies and demonstrations for the public for various occasions on Maui.

Roselani Place’s manager, Steve Hansen, was introduced to Maui’s tea association in the early 2000’s, when he

was invited to a tea ceremony at the association’s “headquarters”, near the previous Nagata grocery store on Hana

Highway in Paia. Article sumitted by Bruce J Purvis, MD.

Sudoku

Here’s how to play…

The objective of the game is to fill all the blank

squares in a game with the correct numbers.

There are three very simple constraints to

follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:

Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9

See the front desk for the solution.
