2 NCJW - ST. LOUIS SECTION

As we begin 2015, I feel that we Jews have another opportunity to make new resolutions and reflections. We work to improve ourselves and strive for Tikkun Olam in making our community a better, safer place for women, children and families. I hope that in this new calendar year you will find new ways to engage with NCJW through one of our community service projects, our advocacy efforts, or attending one of our fun events, many of which are included in our Bulletin.

2015 is also a special anniversary year at NCJW – we will be celebrating our 120th year as

the St. Louis Section next fall. Stay tuned as our plans develop – and I invite you to become involved with us on the planning committee!

NCJW also has fun events coming right up: our annual Trivia Night is February 21 at Temple Israel, a new Men’s Event and Family Fest: Families Helping Families event are on the horizon. We also have a committee planning a Pop-Up Shop for our expanding Resale efforts! Reserve your Trivia table now, and bring your friends to join you at one (or more!) of these great events to have fun and provide financial support for NCJW’s programs and projects. Join us on Jan. 26 for Mother 2 Mother, a conversation about “the talk” black mothers give to their sons.

You’ll notice that our quarterly Bulletin has a new insert – the OACAP Mainstream. OACAP, our older adult programming group, has become a committee of NCJW, which will foster communication about their events with our entire membership, and allow the OACAP group to find new ways to participate in our NCJW programs as well. I hope you’ll take a look at what these older adults have planned; their programs are interesting and informative. All of us will become part of this demographic in due course, so I invite you to take a look at what OACAP offers in our community.

I hope you share my pride in our NCJW work, which continues to grow “from strength to strength” as you will read throughout the Bulletin. New Kids Community Closets are opening in area elementary schools, and our Human Trafficking Task Force is planning an intensive community education effort about this scourge of modern-day slavery in connection with Passover. And our 15th Annual Back-To-School! Store is July 19, so mark your calendars!

Your membership and financial contributions are vital to keeping our section strong and vibrant. Our fiscal year ends in June, so there’s still time to support NCJW with your Annual Campaign contribution, and to join the Hannah G. Solomon Society at the $1,000 giving level and above. Now through January 15, any new gift at the Hannah G. Solomon level or increased to that level, will be matched courtesy of a very generous donor. Thank you as always for your commitment to NCJW, and happy 2015!

JANUARy – MARCH 2015 3

Our Kids Community Closets Keep ExpandingIn July 2014, we opened our 12th Kids Community Closet at KIPP Victory Academy located near Delmar and Goodfellow, east of the Loop. KIPP Victory opened with grades Kindergarten and 1st this past fall, and will expand with new grade levels in the upcoming school years. Marlene Hammerman and Stephanie Samuels are the liaisons to the school with 200 students. Both were eager to be a part of this school and help those students who need items on an emergency basis.

Our 13th closet was opened in November 2014 at Lucas Crossing Elementary in the Normandy Collaborative School District. The school, located east of the University of Missouri – St. Louis, is the home to almost 1,000 young minds. Roberta Stolz and Merle Singer opened the closet right as the chilly weather was setting in. The closet was stocked full of new uniforms, coats, hats, gloves, and undergarments for administrators to give to students in need. We plan on opening our 14th closet in the spring of 2015. If you are interested in becoming a school liaison please contact Michelle Brooks, [email protected] for more information.

Project Renewal Hosts a 2nd Successful Event

Project Renewal is designed to empower underserved women by providing clothing, education, resources and the tools they need to succeed at work and home.

In October 2014, we hosted The Women’s Safe House for Project Renewal. Women are partnered with an NCJW volunteer for an afternoon of makeovers, shopping as well as interview and financial advice.

The afternoon turned out to be life-changing for one of the participants who had a job interview the next day. The participant had to go through several interviews to get the job, before each interview she thought about what she learned at Project Renewal and how she felt that day. She was thrilled when she got the job and reported that she felt what she learned at Project Renewal and her NCJW “friend” was instrumental in her success, “I really appreciated Ms. Laura [NCJW volunteer, Laura Paperner], she helped me tremendously.”

To volunteer for one of our upcoming events or to join the planning committee, please call (314)993-5181 or email Heather at [email protected].

JANUARy – MARCH 2015 7

Thank you to our chair, Phyllis Langsdorf, and her committee for putting together a fabulous evening on October 22, 2014 honoring the Women of Couturier throughout the years. The night was filled with fashion, friends, and laughter. Highlights of the night included mingling with local designers Randi Chervitz, Diane Katzman, Michael Drummond, Everett Johnson, Dianne Isbell, and Nina Ganci. Each designer donated a beautiful piece from their collection, which were then auctioned to the highest bidder. 50 fabulous gift certificates were in grab bags for guests to purchase and be surprised by what they received! Attendees laughed and reminisced while watching a slide show of the past 50 years of Couturier.

8 NCJW - ST. LOUIS SECTION

Two years after Hannah G. Solomon founded the National Council of Jewish Women in Chicago, 34 members launched the

St. Louis Section. In the 120 years that have passed, we have worked as a section to identify struggles for women and children in our community and create solutions to

alleviate their challenges. From the beginning NCJW volunteers have driven crucial programs in our community from ensuring there is milk in the St. Louis City public schools, to serving for advocates for abused women, and then making sure students have what they need to start school. NCJW has made a significant impact in the last 120 years. Stay tuned this year for more about our history and ways to celebrate!

Human Trafficking Task Force UpdateIn May 2014, NCJW formed the Human Trafficking Task Force to examine a crisis facing the country, but more specifically St. Louis. Comprised of almost 30 women, and led by Rosalyn Borg and Sarah Martin, the task force spent the first few months brainstorming and gathering ideas. The questions posed by the task force evolved into their first campaign - “Why Should I Care?”

You might be asking yourself the same question, “Why is human trafficking so important?” Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery. The victims, both male and female, are exploited for commercial sex or labor purposes.

Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to achieve exploitation. More than half of victims trafficked into and within the United States are children.

It may surprise you to learn that St. Louis is in the top twenty cities in the country for trafficking according to the Department of Justice. The primary goal of the NCJW Human Trafficking Task Force is to educate the community and bring awareness to an issue that is happening in our own backyard.

If you would like more information on joining the task force please contact Stephanie Enger, Program Associate, at [email protected].

NCJW, Inc. Chosen by Slingshot 14-15 for Work with Women and GirlsWe are delighted to share that NCJW, Inc. has been recognized by the Slingshot Guide 2014-15 Supplement as a leading Jewish organization impacting the lives of women and girls. NCJW was selected from among hundreds of finalists reviewed by 112 professionals with expertise in grant-making and Jewish communal life. The Guide declared that “NCJW’s advocacy work sets it apart from other Jewish women’s organizations

by empowering its members to become advocates and change makers within their own communities.”

A is for Advocacy: Join the A-List!

These issues impact our community in a very real way. More than 250 NCJW members and friends have put their names on the A-List, an educational campaign we run in the St. Louis Jewish Light. Our A-List sponsorship ads are part of our efforts to educate the community and elected officials about issues integral to our mission, such as reproductive rights, gun violence prevention, voter I.D. and health care. Donations fund the ads and contribute to our advocacy programs for women, children and families.

Did you know….. . Missouri continues to reject millions in Federal funds,

which would provide health care to an additional 300,000 low-income adults – by the legislature not authorizing Medicaid expansion?

. . . Missouri women earn only 78 cents for every dollar earned by men in the same job?

. . . In many Missouri municipalities, you could be asked to leave a restaurant if you are LGBT?

. . . The Missouri legislature is still working to strip away women’s access to reproductive justice?

. . . Not all gun purchases require a background check?

Directory Updates Let us know if you have updates to your contact information. As of November 30, 2014, we received the following changes:

CONNECT: Our Youngest Members Holding our first event last year for 5th-8th grade girls, our hope was to engage today’s girls with NCJW as many of our current members were through Junior Council. Since then, CONNECT members have been involved in many NCJW activities, such as Couturier, Shower the Shelter, and Project Renewal as well as having the opportunity to have some fun with girls they may not have met another way. It is our hope that CONNECT members will develop leadership skills and a passion for helping make our community a better place. If you have a daughter who would like to get involved or would like to help plan, please contact Heather at (314)993-5181 or [email protected].

CONNECT is Going Bowling! Join us Sunday, January 11, 2015 for bowling at Olivette Lanes from 2 pm – 4 pm. Please bring a package of underwear or socks to benefit Back-To-School! Store. CONNECT is open to girls in 5th-8th grade girls. This event is free for all paid members, $10 for non-members. It is $18 to join CONNECT. RSVP to Heather at (314)993-5181 or [email protected]
