$10,000 up for grabs – The Herald Sun is offering
$10,000 to the school that can collect the most
mastheads between Sunday 1st June and Saturday 14
th
June. It is adjusted according to the number of students
so all schools have an equal chance. The masthead is
the title on the front page, “Herald Sun” and the date
needs to be included with it. If you’re unsure just bring
in the entire front page. There is a collection box in the
foyer. Thanks so much for your support…and spread
the word!!
Healthy Habit – Help kids be active for 30-60 minutes
a day. This can be tricky in the midst of busy, modern
day living. Here are a few suggestions:
-Walk or bike-ride to and from school
-Jump on the trampoline
-Dance to some music
-Kick the footy, throw the netball/basketball
-Play in the park
-Take the dog for a walk
There are lots more…try to build physical activity into
your daily and weekly routine. We are all more likely
to keep up exercise if it’s a daily habit.
Creative Play – Last year we collected lots of different
toys for students to play with at lunchtime, and it would
be great to continue that. If anyone has toys their
children no longer use, especially dolls and dolls
clothes, Lego and other blocks, cooking utensils, ‘dress
ups’, ‘Matchbox’ cars, trains and tracks, puppets,
marbles etc….we can use them. Thankyou!!!
Enjoy your week!
Sue Ranger, Defence School Transition Aide.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR REWARD
UPDATE
The lead changes again – well done Melba
House! Keep up the positive behaviour
everyone. Remember that it’s not only the
winning house that gets the end-of-term prize
but also the top positive behaviour achievers in
each class.

***Sunday Nights - a
great night to check
for Head Lice. ***
Happy Birthday to Amy
Franks who is having her birthday
on Thursday.
On behalf of the Puckapunyal
Primary School Community, we
wish Amy a very Happy Birthday!
***Have you heard your child read today? We encourage all students to practise their
reading at home about 5 nights per week. Therefore, by now, most students should have
read at least between 70-75 nights. Well done if you have kept up!
The School Canteen is open for Lunch Orders again
this Friday.
This week the menu is - Party Pies / Sausage Rolls $1.00 ea or 3 for $2.50
Chocolate/Strawberry Milk $2.00 each
Apple/Orange Juice Popper $1.50 each
No charge for tomato sauce
In a perfect world, all of our students would be
achieving well every day at school. We would love to
have all children succeeding and aiming high.
However, that is not always the case. There are some
things that we can all do to help. We need your
help.
We still have far too many students arriving ‘unready’
for school, each and every day. While most of our
students and their families are absolutely terrific at
preparing for school, not all are.
Firstly, all of our students need to have a filling and
nourishing breakfast before they get to school. That
way they can concentrate better and give their best right
from the beginning of the day. Studies show that there
is a direct link to poor school performance and not
eating breakfast!
Secondly, a good night’s sleep is essential. Some
of our students are too tired before they start class. It is
no wonder they struggle with the classroom demands.
Kids cannot concentrate or learn when they are tired.
School begins at 9 a.m. Too many students are not at
school on time. This means that the late students
miss out on important teaching instructions. It also
means that teachers have to stop teaching the class in
order to direct the late comer. Late students affect
everybody!
We thank the families who are doing well to help in
these areas. If anyone needs help, please let us know
We can help.

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth
and satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing
schools, beginning school for the first time and even
returning for another school year can be daunting for
students and parents. It is great to see parents eager to
support their children at this time and be an integral part
of their education. If you have any concerns, or just feel
like a chat about school and your child, please find me!
SWAPP Select Program
I have information about the ADF partners career
assistance program if anyone is interested.
NEW UNIFORM
We have recently had a new shipment of uniform arrive
that includes shorts, tops, tracksuit pants and hats. Some
parents have been waiting on this to arrive.
Best wishes for the week.

Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when
discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home, etc.
Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are very busy
places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means, we can plan to cover certain
topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.
Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 3 & 6 Literacy: We will continue to develop early writing skills with a focus on pencil grip, capital letters and full stops. We will
be focusing on the letter ‘Uu’ and the sound it makes. We are also encouraging students to use finger spaces in their writing.
We are encouraging the use of Golden words within our writing.
Numeracy: We will practise counting to 20 by 1s. We are learning about the number 11. We are also looking at ordinal
numbers (1st, 2
nd, 3
rd, etc.), as well as 2D and 3D shapes within the environment.
Junior School – Year 1s Rooms 3, 8 & 9 Literacy: We will continue to revise our writing skills, correct letter formation, use of dotted thirds and the construction of
sentences. We have been continuing to focus on questions, commas, nouns and exclamation marks within our writing. When
writing we are looking and thinking about the sounds within our words. We are also trying to use resources such as
dictionaries/devices to assist us with our spelling.
Numeracy: We will continue to work on addition and subtraction and the different methods used to solve these equations.
We are also looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and making comparisons. We are focusing on where we can see
2D and 3D shapes in the environment.
Junior School – Year 2s Rooms 8, 9 & 10 Literacy: We will continue to revise our writing skills, correct letter formation, use of dotted thirds and the construction of
sentences. We have been continuing to focus on questions, commas, nouns, verbs and exclamation marks within our writing.
When writing we are looking and thinking about the sounds within our words. We are also trying to use resources such as
dictionaries/devices to assist us with our spelling.

Middle School - Years 3/4 Rooms 10, 11 & 13 Literacy: During writing sessions over the next few weeks, we will work on persuasive text and narratives. We will also be
focusing on prefixes.
Numeracy: We will continue to learn fractions and 3D objects. Tables facts will be practised throughout the
Senior School - Years 5/6 Rooms 1A&1B Literacy: During writing sessions over the next few weeks, we will continue to work on narratives and procedural texts.

In reading we will be focusing on fluency and expression while also identifying key words and phrases during note taking.
Numeracy: We will continue work on place value (including decimals), processes, fractions and decimals. Another focus
will be continued work relating to prime numbers, composite numbers, factors and index numbers. Tables facts will be
practised throughout the week.

Writing in room 10! 2/3D have been working on making our writing more interesting as part of the editing
process. Here is how Hamish made his writing more interesting by adding and changing
some words.
Version 1: On the weekend I played with my pet rabbit. He’s very cute and tame. I like
holding him and Oliver prefers to pat Wallace on the ground.

Keep practising to read and write! Enjoy your children!
Learning Words
If a word is used regularly by your child in writing, provide help with learning to spell the
word after writing.
Ask your child to:
Look at the whole word carefully
Close their eyes and picture the word in their mind
Say the word and trace it in the air
Say the word again
Write the word
Check their spelling with the correct word
Enjoy helping your child to spell those “tricky” words!!!
The School is having a Book Fair. It will be a great opportunity to buy fantastic books for
