International College of Hotel Management

Joseph Brunato has been awarded a scholarship from PISCE (Primary Industry Centre for Science Education). He was interviewed earlier in term 4, 2014 and was one of the students chosen out of a large field of applicants. Well done Joseph. Industry Placement Scholarship Each PICSE activity centre holds an Industry Placement

Scholarship program for year 11 and 12 students during the summer holidays. The scholarship consists of a one week Residential Camp, one week of Industry Placement where students work as a scientist alongside researchers, all culminating with a scholarship payment of $300! The Residential Camp is held by the partner University for each Activity Centre. Students are engaged in activities at the university and have the opportunity to interact with lecturers and post graduate students during the camp. In addition students visit many research organisations during the week, hearing about current research being conducted and getting to tour the facilities available to researchers at the cutting edge of science. The Industry Placement occurs in the April holidays and is organised at a time that is appropriate for both the student and the industry partner. For one week students experience working with a research scientist, aiding in the current research work of their mentor scientist. This is a great opportunity for students to gain a deeper knowledge of what is involved in working in a field that takes their interest, and to develop some new skills in the field or in the laboratory. Joseph has requested to be placed at the Yalumba Winery because of its impressive laboratory facilities. Joseph said that he learnt a lot of things for example it is possible to fake the taste of sugar by changing the acid levels.

Work Experience for 2015 BEFORE CONSIDERING WORK EXPERIENCE PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

It is a legal requirement that prior to commencing work experience students are inducted in the following areas: Work Health & Safety Act 2012, Equal Opportunity and the Children’s

Protection Act 1993. Adequate time (approximately 3-4 hours) should be allocated to cover these topics effectively and students need to demonstrate their understanding. This induction is done by the school.

In addition to this, the work experience form must be signed by the student, parent/guardian, work experience supervisor (all arranged by the student) and finally the principal (arranged by the school). The original (copies or faxes are unacceptable) work experience agreement form then becomes a legal contract which sets the school insurance cover in place and must be retained by the school for a number of years.

The school must also provide a contact person who is responsible for each student for the duration of their placement.

Work experience is a very valuable experience for most students however; it does take time to ensure that the above expectations are met. We are happy to accommodate students in the times allocated, please do not cause yourself or the school embarrassment by making other arrangements and then asking for exceptions to be made.

Students who wish to do work experience during 2015 are advised that the dates are:

7th - 10th April Deadline for paperwork 3rd March

6th - 10th July Deadline for paperwork 2nd June

28th September - 2nd October Deadline for paperwork 1st September

30th November - 4th December Deadline for paperwork 3rd November

Work or job trials are not sanctioned by SA work experience guidelines.

Please note this is general work experience only. Students undertaking a Vet program will need to organise their Vet work placement with the Vet Office.

Networking has been critical to Jessica Harmston’s career success as owner of food and beverage business Nurish. Harmston, 28 wanted to bring to Adelaide what she had seen in New York – healthy food options, especially for those on the go. She completed Mission Australia’s New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) program, a federally funded initiative to help people set up sustainable businesses through which participants obtain a Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management) and a mentor for 12 months.

Harmston started Nurish in September last year and says much of her business, which includes a store at The Market Shed on Holland on Sundays and deliveries to Adelaide stores and cafes, has come through conversations with people.

“I think we’re always networking, especially at the market we do every Sunday, where we’re always meeting new people,” she says. “We’ve got a few regular clients through there. NEIS was a huge network in itself.”

ADFA Education Award The Australian Defence Force Academy Education Award is presented annually to Year 12 students in recognition of leadership potential, and academic and sporting achievements exhibited during Year 11. The award comprises of a laptop computer and certificate. There are up to 100 awards available on behalf of the Navy, Army and Air Force which will be presented to suitable applicants

News from Flinders University Increased demand for Flinders courses Undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses at Flinders University have experienced strong demand in 2015. The University has responded by making a total of 7,016 offers (up from 6,841 offers in 2014) in the 15th January offer round.

Over 100 of our Year 12 2014 graduates were offered places in undergraduate courses at Flinders University.

Bonus Points The three South Australian universities, Flinders University, The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, have replaced all equity and subject bonus schemes with two new bonus schemes. The new schemes are for students studying Year 12 in 2015 who apply for entry to studies commencing in the 2016 university academic year.

The two new schemes are the SA Universities Equity Scheme and the SA Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme. More information on current bonus points can be found at:
