Growth

Farewell from Pastor Brent...Dear Good Shepherd Church Family,This is the last message that I will write for our monthlyMessenger. As you may know by now, I have accepted acall to Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka, Minnesota. Mylast sermon at our Central Campus will be on July 4/5and at our West Campus on July 19.

I am not one for big farewell sermons—after all it is hardto say “goodbye” to a church family that you have come tolove. But there are some things that I want to say to you…some farewell thoughts.

First, I want to say “thank you”. Thank you for giving methe privilege of serving as your Lead Pastor for twelveyears. Thank you for adopting my family into your churchfamily twelve years ago. Good Shepherd has been a greatplace for our children to grow up and have their faithshaped. Thank you for all the ways that you have sup-ported the mission of Good Shepherd during my tenure. I so appreciate all the ways that so many of you haveserved—those who have served in leadership, those whovolunteer on a regular basis, those who pray faithfully forthis congregation, and all those who share their gifts oftime, talent and treasure through Good Shepherd.

This past week, Ann and I have been ministered to byyour prayers, encouragement and support during Ann’srecent hospitalization and surgery for complications fromCrohn’s Disease. Thank you for ministering to us duringthis recent difficult time. Thank you for everything!

The second thing I want to say to you is “good job”! As Ihave reflected on the past twelve years we’ve spent togetheras pastor and people, there are many things that I feelgood about: the beautiful facilities that we have main-tained and expanded at both campuses; the educationalministries that have been strengthened from preschool to adults; the healthy stewardship and finances; and ourvibrant worship…just to name a few of God’s blessings at Good Shepherd.

But the thing that I feel best about are all the ways thatthis congregation now serves as the hands and feet of

Jesus… the food pantry, the clothes closet, our Adopt-a-School relationship with Orchard Ridge ElementarySchool, the job transition program, Upward Basketballand all the other ways we seek to share Jesus’ love withchildren, Feed My Starving Children, and so many otherways that Good Shepherd seeks to love and serve ourneighbors. You have truly made a difference in our com-munity and our world. Good job!

Third, I want to say “carry on!” When a Pastor, or in GoodShepherd’s case, two pastors leave for a new call there is atendency to fret, to be anxious, to worry about the future. Itis important to remember that the pastor’s role is to equipand nourish God’s people to go out into the world to doGod’s work. YOU are the church! You have three faithfuland dedicated pastors remaining at Good Shepherd, youwill have a fine Interim Lead Pastor (Pastor Bill White),and sometime next year you will have a new Lead Pastorto equip and nourish and lead you. So carry on! Keep ondoing what you are doing! I love the words of a song thatwas written by Lutheran songwriter Jay Beech severalyears ago. It is called “The Church Song”. It goes like this:

We are the Church, the body of the Lord,We are all God’s children and

we have been restored.The Church is not a building where people go to pray;

It’s not made out of sticks and stones,it’s not made out of clay.

We are the Church, the body of the Lord,We are all God’s children and

we have been restored. You can go to worship, but you cannot go to church,

you can’t find a building that’s aliveno matter how you search.

The Church is not a business, a committee or a board, it’snot a corporation for the business of the Lord.

The Church it is the people living out their lives, called, enlightened, sanctified for the work of Jesus Christ.

We are the church, the body of the Lord, We are all God’s children and we have been restored.

Two vocal part practiceswill be held on Tuesday, July 14 and Tuesday, July 21 at West Campus in theWorship area from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm, please come to both practices. A mandatoryfinal large group practice will be held Tuesday, July 28 at West Campus in theWorship area from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm and we will record the song on Tuesday,August 4 at West Campus in the Worship area from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Toparticipate in this special event please RSVP to Sarah Key, [email protected] or 271-6633. Sheet music and a CD with both the original acapella songand piano accompaniment for your vocal range will be left at the campus infor-mation desk of your choice for pickup July 5 or later, dependent on when youRSVP. When submitting your RSVP please let us know the vocal part you singand which campus you would like your sheet music and CD left at.

PWaP is dependent on volunteers like you to help us provide support andaccommodations for those in our congregation with special or additional needs sothat they can participate as fully as possibly in the life of our congregation. Someof our PWaP volunteer needs are completely behind the scenes while others areworking directly with congregational members. And we have a need for both adultand youth volunteers, our youngest volunteer last year was 12. Currently we arelooking for • Adults to volunteer with our PWaP Adult Church School class thatwill resume in September • Youth and adults to volunteer as buddies for childrenbeginning in September • An experienced grant-funding writer • PWaP serviceproject organizer. We’ve got some ideas we just need your organizational skills!

If you are interested in volunteering your time in any of these areas please contact Sarah Key, [email protected] or 271-6633.

Every 30 Seconds...Less time than it takes to brew your morning coffee, or pop the popcorn you willeat during your favorite movie, or upload your new profile picture to Facebook;that’s how often a new person receives the gift of access to a lifetime supply ofclean drinking water. That’s right, every 30 seconds. That means that last week-end, during Team Good Shepherd’s 60-minute group run, the lives of 120 peoplewere changed. Our congregation is tackling the root causes of poverty through theministry of Team World Vision and our own team is leading the effort. Ourmarathon runners completed eight weeks of “base training” in early July. Thenext step for these team members is to participate in a 5 kilometer “test” event. This is a HUGE accomplishment. Most of our runners are not “runners”. Theyhave gone from their couch to a 5K in just two months. Bravo! 5K Test Event:Monday, July 6, 6:00 pm, Hometown USA Community Park, Verona, (acrossfrom Culver’s and next to the Eagles Nest ice rink). Come out and cheer for TeamGood Shepherd!

Our half marathon runners kick off their “base training” during the second weekof July. They will train along-side our marathoners as theyfollow the half marathon plan provided by Team World Vision. Most of these team members also do not considerthemselves to be runners. Go team!

Each week, team members gather to run together on Saturday morning, learnmore about keeping their bodies healthy along this journey, and find out moreabout the impact World Vision has in Africa. New friendships are being formed.Old friends are strengthening bonds. Tips for proper nutrition and hydration arebeing tested. Running technique is being refined. Team members are breakingdown physical and mental barriers. As we gather in Jesus name each Saturday,we draw closer in faith as well.

New participants interested in completing either the full or the half marathon arewelcome. New team members who are interested in running the full marathonand who have already completed a 5K are encouraged to join the team as “officialtraining” begins this month. All others who are interested in participating withTeam Good Shepherd and have not yet run a 5K are encouraged to take on thechallenge of the half marathon.

Register for Team Good Shepherd at www.teamworldvision.org/madison.The Madison Marathon and Half Marathon are held November 8th. Our team isunited by the cause, not the distance. Our collective goal is to raise $100,000 forclean drinking water. Information regarding opportunities to support Team Good Shepherd will be shared in the months ahead. Contact Colin Grove, Team Captain, at [email protected] or at 608-345-7188if you have any questions.

Update on Pastoral TransitionsDuring this time of transition on our pastoral staff, I will be providing periodicupdates on both the progress we are making in filling our pastoral positions aswell as the process we are undertaking to move forward.

Our new Interim Lead Pastor, Bill White, will be transitioning into this newrole in mid-July as Pr. Brent completes his service to Good Shepherd. In fact, Pr.Bill has already been working with our pastoral team and church board as welook to find an Interim Associate Pastor as quickly as possible.

I just want to briefly highlight where we are at in our search for the InterimAssociate Pastor position. The interim is appointed by the Bishop subject toapproval by our Board of Directors. We are working closely with the synod officeto find the right fit, both for the Interim Pastor and for our congregation. We hopeto have this critical position filled quickly, but it also needs to be the right fit as thisInterim Associate Pastor could easily serve us for a year or longer. Let me explain…

I have received a lot of questions about the Call Committee and Call Process. I willget into greater detail on this in next month’s Messenger, but I wanted to point outthe steps and approximate timelines we will be undertaking in this Call process.

1. We will form a Call Committee to call a new Lead Pastor in August with theintent for this Call Committee to begin their work in early September, shortlyafter Labor Day. The Board of Directors will appoint the Call Committee and tryto ensure a balanced committee with representation from both campuses and avariety of backgrounds. The Call Committee will likely be working over the courseof many months as we search far and wide for our next pastoral leader.

2. We do not envision forming a second Call Committee for a new Associate Pastorthis year. The Board feels strongly that we need to have a new Lead Pastorcalled, installed and settled before we begin discerning what we may want tocall for in a new Associate Pastor. This is why we are so concerned with findingthe right fit for the Interim Associate Pastor position right now as they will beserving for an extended period of time as an interim with our congregation.

The pastoral transitions we are undergoing naturally create a time of discernmentfor our Board. We recognize we have a strong team of pastors, staff and lay leadersat Good Shepherd. We want to work collaboratively with those parties to ensure asmooth transition and to lead our congregation forward.

On behalf of all of us on the Church Board, I would like to thank you for the manyencouraging words of support we have received. Many people have offered tohelp in a variety of ways. Don’t be surprised if we reach out to many of you overthe next year as opportunities present themselves.

God’s Peace, John Filsinger
