Many years ago a lady came to church service with a blackeye. Her husband, a church member, had given it to her! Hewas sorry!

This man had recently returned from fighting in Vietnam. Dur-ing that war the enemy would sneak into American camps at night and kill sleeping GI’s by cuttingtheir throats. Soldiers lived 24/7 in constant jeopardy of their lives and reacted even in sleep. He hadwarned her if she wanted to wake him, she should shake his toes. She was never to come to thehead of the bed to wake him. Well, one day she forgot!

Living in perpetual jeopardy is incredible stress that is not easy to cope with. That vet, by God’s grace,eventually worked through the stress and thankfully, his sweet wife was not given any more shiners.Others live with the aftershocks of jeopardy for a long time.

Paul felt death’s shadow “every hour.” His preaching that Christ died for our sins and arose from thedead had made him enemies who would have gladly killed him in hideous ways. (I Cor.15:32) But the message of hope in Christ that drove him also helped him to cope with the stress of perpetualthreat. He knew one day, because of the resurrection, death would be “swallowed up in victory.”
