Welcome Classic Glass Corvette Club members and prospective members. Each month we update our club website to provide information about our club, members and activities.

As all are aware, COVID-19 continues to impact our daily lives, to include so much of what we

had planned for our Corvette club. Governor Kemp has again extended Executive Order 04.08.20.03 and 04.08.20.05 maintaining the limitation for indoor gatherings to a maximum of 50 people and requiring 6-foot separation. As a result, we will hold our General Membership Meeting as an outdoor event in conjunction with our annual club picnic at Riverside Park Day Use Area on Saturday, 26 September.

Once the Governor’s Executive Order allows inside gatherings of greater than 50 persons, we will begin holding our monthly General Membership Meetings at Hudson Grille near Town Center Mall, Kennesaw. Thank you to Doug Reed for his efforts to make this happen. We see this as positive move for the club.

As we have done since the pandemic started in March, we’ll continue to monitor our Events Calendar for needed changes. Please continue to check the calendar (cgCorvetteclub.com/events.htm) for updates.

Congratulations to our new CGCC Store Manager – Steven Cassaniti. Steven and Rick Huntzicker (outgoing store manager) passed the baton this last week of August so Steven can start the job in time for SVS. Our club store, hosted on our CGCC website, is your place to go for club logo’d items (decals, patches and tumblers) and a link to the Uniform Source-hosted CGCC Store for club apparel. A number of members have taken advantage of the easy ordering system and have items shipped directly to their home. Please go to our club website store at (store.cgCorvetteclub.com) to place your orders.

Highlights from August: - On Sunday, 2 August, several members drove their Corvettes to Perimeter Mall to participate in the Caffeine & Octane (C&A) car show and pass out flyers for our SuperVette Saturday charity event scheduled for 12 September at Day’s Chevrolet in Acworth. Thank you to Bob Catapano and Roger Espinosa for setting up the Corvette Corral for us.

- On 6-8 August, a few of us drove to Pigeon Forge, TN for the annual Corvette Expo car show. Fellow member and founder of MAD Vettes, Donnie Herrin, displayed several MAD Vettes cars at the event, earning the Club Participation Award. - On Saturday, 15 August, we held our monthly Corvettes & Coffee at Panera Bread, followed by a new member cruise to Knucklehead Café in Rockmart. Thank you, David Klingensmith and Bob Zajicek. - On Sunday, 16 August, we held our monthly brunch at Governor’s Gun Club. Thank you to Aileen Marshall for putting this together for us each month. - On Monday, 24 August, 16 of our Corvettes participated in a WWII special event with Governor Kemp at the State Capitol. US Army CPL Sidney Walton, 101 years old, is on a crusade across the country to meet all 50 Governor’s in recognition of the 75th Anniversary of the end of WWII. Thank you to Tom Wilder for organizing this event for us. My Dad, 1LT Richard Bailey, 98 years old (the youngster – haha), was also able to attend, and really enjoyed the opportunity to meet and talk with Sidney and Gov. Kemp. After the meet and greet at the Capitol, our Corvettes escorted Sidney up 75 to the TN line enroute to Michigan. - On 26-30 August, we drove five cars to Corvettes at Carlisle in Carlisle, PA. Despite the rain and a tornado watch, we had a good time checking out hundreds of Corvettes and a whole slew of vendors. This show has the reputation of being the largest Corvette show in the world. Thank you to Bob Catapano for organizing this event for us.

For September, our calendar includes a trip to Bowling Green, KY for the NCM 26th Anniversary Celebration. We will again attend Caffeine & Octane at Perimeter Mall on 6 September; where, thanks to Bob Catapano working with the C&A Event Coordinators, our corral will be set up in the main area with the NBCSN camera crews. Corral parking will be limited to 12 Corvettes – so please be sure to contact Bob to reserve your spot. This event will give us another opportunity to talk with fellow Corvette owners about our annual SuperVette Saturday charity car show at Day’s Chevrolet on 12 September. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up here [supervettesaturday.com]. Our CGCC Sunday Brunch at Governor’s Gun Club and Corvettes & Coffee continue to be popular events to meet and greet fellow club members in a smaller setting. We will conclude the month of September with our annual picnic and monthly membership meeting.

Classic Glass Corvette Club gives us the opportunity to learn and have fun with our Corvettes. The more you participate, the better it gets!

Respectfully,

Don Don Bailey President, Classic Glass Corvette Club

As of this writing CGCC seems to be doing well. Physical therapy is the order of the day for a few of our

group and that does wonders. All of us who have been limiting their interactions with others are more than

ready to have this pandemic under control. Please continue your efforts. Will this year ever end?

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Bob Zajicek, VP Membership

August was a record month for membership in 2020! We had seven new members join and our total membership is now 245.

Scott Parker and wife Tina Blake joined the Club in August. They have a Torch Red 2015 Stingray coupe and live in Acworth.

Justin and Veronica Padgett parked their white 2018 Z06 coupe with Club members at Caffeine and Octane in July and became members later that same day! They live in Loganville.

Brian Marusa joined; he and wife Monica live in Cumming. They have a Watkins Glen Gray 2017 Stingray coupe.

Charles Hopkins has two Corvettes, a 1995 White coupe and a Torch Red 2014 Stingray convertible. Charles' home is in Marietta.

Ken Stieren, also a dual Corvette owner, has a 1997 Silver coupe and a 2009 Jet Stream Blue ZR1. Ken and Donnie Herrin may be the only ZR1 owners in the Club at the moment. Ken lives in Johns Creek.

Brant Robinson rejoined the Club in August after parting with his Corvette last February. He is waiting for his 2020 convertible to be built this month. This makes Brent an automatic member of another large Corvette Club and best wishes for a very timely delivery.

Welcome aboard everyone!

Our monthly new member cruise was August 15th right after Corvettes and Coffee at Panera Bread in the Avenue West. We were favored with a rain-free Saturday and all headed west on 278 after a short trip to catch it down 120. Our destination was Knuckleheads Cafe in Rockmart. Knuckleheads is a sports bar whose name and decor pays homage to the Harley Davidson motorcycles built with the 'knucklehead' engine. There are probably a dozen plus vintage, fully restored Harleys displayed throughout the bar and restaurant areas as well as Harley memorabilia. Interestingly, the Rockmart Chevrolet dealership once occupied the same premises. The food and service was equally as good as Knucklehead's heritage and a fine time was had by all.

We will be having a new member cruise September 19th after Corvettes and Coffee. Our destination may be either Rocco's Pub in Jasper, or Fatz, also in Jasper, or maybe a mystery destination? Stay tuned!

As always, all members are always invited to attend, so if you plan on being at C&C, please join us for the new member cruise.

Board of Directors Meeting Summary

For the last few months, I have been including a summary of our Board of Directors (BOD) minutes for our VetteSette Newsletter. Our Webmaster, Chaz Cone, has now made those minutes available at the bottom of the member log-on page at: cgcorvetteclub.com/Members_Login.htm. So, you are free to look at those minutes and the details anytime. Instead of summarizing those minutes point-by-point, I thought that giving you an overview of the highlights with a few more details this month would better meet your needs. Your BOD has been busy over the last few weeks dealing with many changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other business that needed to be completed for the betterment of our club and our members.

- We received good news in July from the IRS. That’s correct, the Internal Revenue Service. Good News? From the IRS? Not a common occurrence. Some of you may be aware that we applied for reinstatement of our tax-exempt status under IRC 501(c)(7). The application was submitted earlier in the year, but progress was slowed by COVID-19 precautions. But we were finally approved retroactive to May 2010.

- Our Store Manager (Rick Huntzicker) has resigned his position for personal reasons. Rick was instrumental in setting up the new and improved club store with online ordering, payment, and delivery. He also worked with members and the BOD to develop and market our new club shirt. This reorganization was a huge project and we can thank Rick for his initiative and leadership in bringing about those changes.

- Due to major social changes caused by COVID-19, our normal meeting place, the Cherokee Cattle Company (CCC), has been closed since March. Our President, Don Bailey, has contacted the manager about reopening, and as an alternative, even to request food catering to their parking lot so we can have “tailgate” meetings. (Can one “tailgate” from a Corvette?). All of Don’s efforts have indicated that CCC may not reopen anytime soon, if at all. Don asked Doug Reed to initiate a search for an alternative meeting place. Doug has located Hudson Grille located near Town Center in Kennesaw. Hudson Grille has a large meeting room with A/V equipment installed. Don met with the Manager, Paige Nick, and confirmed they would be pleased to host our meetings. They will also cater food to their rear parking lot until COVID-19 restrictions on inside group meeting size are lifted. The Board has decided to move forward with using Hudson Grill for our monthly general meeting location starting in Oct 2020 (September’s meeting will be held in conjunction with our picnic on 26 September).

- SuperVette Saturday (SVS) has been a prominent discussion point for some time. We have continued to prepare while avoiding committing any club funds until we could make a final decision on going ahead with SVS as scheduled (9/12). At a special BOD meeting on 8/14 the board deliberated numerous aspects of holding SVS including Day’s Chevrolet willingness to host the event, as well as considering a member straw vote on continuing planning and execution. Don also contacted the Georgia Governor’s office to see if any future changes in policy would affect our outdoor event. After carefully deliberating the pros and cons for holding SVS, the BOD voted to hold the event as scheduled with appropriate precautions. We thank Bob Catapano for stepping up to take the reins as SVS Manager for Roger Espinosa who had to step down due to a major change in his work and travel schedule.

Volume XXX Issue 9 September 2020

- A question arose during our regular meeting on 8/4 about our financial condition to hold planned events since we have not been able to raise discretionary funds at membership meetings. That topic was discussed in detail during the special meeting on 8/14. Our Treasurer, Steve Boaz, provided us with current account status as well as projections so we could decide on if and how to continue our scheduled club events. Details of those discussions are available in the Special Meeting minutes at the link above. I will comment below on the events remaining this year. Steve also received BOD approval to move the club bank account from Bank of America (BoA) to SunTrust. He said BoA has demonstrated poor service and high fees and he has problems accessing them for service.

- Discussions occurred concerning the annual club picnic scheduled for 9/26. We have historically paid for the picnic out of club discretionary funds. This year, we do not have the funds to do that. The BOD elected to hold the picnic, but to change it to bring your own picnic lunch (BYO). Alternatives were to charge for the picnic and have it catered or to have one or more food trucks. We settled on the BYO alternative without a charge to members. We will be asking for volunteers to bring a dessert to share. A donation jar will also be available at the picnic.

- Christmas Holiday Party – Our holiday party will be a new venue this year at The Governor’s Gun Club (GGC) on December 12 thanks to our VP Activities and assistant Scott and Aileen Marshall. The room has been reserved with our deposit. The balance of payments to GGC will be covered by the per member charge of $40. That will cover all additional expenses including dinner, appetizers, desert, bartender fee and service charge. This year music will be from pre-recorded playlists rather than contracting a band or DJ.

- In July, the membership voted to amend two articles of our bylaws. Article 5 was amended to address an issue that our treasurer has encountered regarding his authorized check writing maximum. That amount was changed from $500 to $1000, meaning he can now make payments up to $1000 with BOD approval, but without the need for general club membership approval. Inflation over the years since the bylaws were written has significantly increased the payments requiring membership approval that exceeded the $500 limit. Also, Article 13 was reworded to allow an online vote to amend the bylaws. The need for both changes became more acute with the membership meeting restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As mentioned above, members are welcome to review the BOD 2020 meeting minutes at the link at the beginning of this section. Ron Deering, Secretary, CGCC, 2020

2021 Nomination Letter

David Klingensmith, VP At-Large

Hello Fellow CGCC Members:

Just a reminder we are asking for nominations for next year’s officers and board members.

We need YOU! to keep the club going. And believe us, aside from some tasks that go along with each

position, it’s only one extra meeting a month for eleven months and a holiday party at the end. What more

could anyone want?

Please, consider volunteering:

We are still looking for a Secretary and would love to have at least two nominations for the other

positions.

For those who have been officers and board members in the past and decided to “retire”, please consider

reactivating yourself as you are seasoned role models for the Next Generation.

For those of you who have been with the club for a few years but haven’t taken that leap, please consider

leaping.

For new members who really want to participate fully in this wonderful club, please do. Filling a board

position is a good introduction if you don’t feel you want to be an officer right out of the gate.

An extra meeting a month, that’s all we ask.

Thank you all,

David Klingensmith, Vice President at Large

Your Nominating Committee

Please contact David Klingensmith, PJ Ray or Tobi Klingensmith if this message has moved you to volunteer

or you wish to nominate someone for a position.

The Greatest Generation

August 24, 2020

By Winston Whitlock

Classic Glass Corvette Club is always willing to show off our cars. After all, the Corvette IS “America’s sports car!” So when Tom Wilder sent out an urgent request (with a very short time fuse!) asking for volunteers to escort a member of “The Greatest Generation,” Mr. Sidney Walton, from our state capitol to the Tennessee State line, we had a great turnout of our members and their Corvettes.

My article and pictures have been published in Vettes of Atlanta by Rod Worley. Please read it here: Governor Kemp Meets Greatest Generation

Note from the Editors: Sidney Walton, age 101 and one of America's oldest WWII vets, is on a nationwide ‘No Regrets Tour.’ He is visiting all 50 states and meeting all 50 governors in a campaign to raise awareness of the rapidly dwindling number of WWII vets and mark the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. To read more about Sidney, go to GoSidneyGo.com

TECH CORNER 1997-2004 C5 Corvette Steering

Column Lock System By Ron Deering

The steering column lock system is an electromechanical theft deterrent system designed to prevent the steering wheel from turning if the proper ignition key has not been inserted. When the car is off and locked, a pin fits into a mating hole in a column lock plate under the steering column, preventing the steering column from turning. When the correct key is inserted into the ignition, the Body Control Module (BCM), a computer module that controls a variety of vehicle functions, sends an unlock signal to the column lock motor. The motor retracts the pin from the hole in the lock plate. The motor also sends a signal back to the BCM to confirm that the pin has actually retracted. The vehicle then operates normally. When the key is removed from the ignition, the BCM signals the lock motor to extend the pin. The pin is spring loaded, so that if it isn’t in line with a lock plate hole, the spring will push it into the hole once the steering wheel is turned by a small amount, thus locking the column. The main column lock components are the lock motor, lock plate, lock pin, and associated hardware, pin location feedback switch, a relay in manual transmission models, and wires and connectors between these components, power, ground, and the BCM.

When the column lock system fails

Unfortunately, the column lock system can experience various failure modes, and is also quite sensitive to low battery voltages and rapid key insertion/removal. A steering column lock system failure will, at some time, almost certainly affect every C5 subject to the recall. When one of these failures occurs, the Driver Information Center will display either the dreaded Service Column Lock, or, Pull Key, Wait 10 Seconds messages, and the fuel will be cut off at 2MPH. The manufacturer has issued four recalls, which have corrected the problems to varying degrees, but which can also fail in new and completely different ways. The recalls variously disabled the locking pin and motor, performed reprogramming, or added various other components to fix the problem.

To determine if at least the first recall has been done and your steering wheel is unlocked With the key out of the ignition, gently move the steering wheel back and forth. If it moves more than a few inches in

either direction, at least one GM recall has most likely been performed. If the steering wheel can’t be turned more

than a few inches in both directions, and/or the wheel obviously comes up against a hard stop, the column is locked.

You don’t need to turn the wheel all the way around. Definitely do not turn it with a great deal of force as you don’t

want to damage any steering components. If you are still unsure if the wheel locks, start the car and turn the steering

wheel at least 90 degrees. Turn off the car, remove the key and repeat this step.

The following C5 Corvettes are affected:

1997-2004 with a manual transmission

Volume XXX Issue 9 September 2020

Classic Glass Corvette Club

14

1997-2000 with an automatic transmission 2001-2004 European export Corvettes with an automatic transmission This means that over 126,000 Corvettes are susceptible to this debilitating problem. It is very likely that every one of them WILL experience failure of the steering column lock system at some time. Domestic 2001-2004 Corvettes with an automatic transmission have not been the subject of a recall for the column lock problem. Of course, since you can install a modification in ANY 1997-2004 Corvette, you'll be covered regardless. Over the years, the manufacturer implemented multiple recall procedures that added, modified, or removed various components. These sometimes fixed the problem for a while, and sometimes caused problems of their own. The manufacturer is no longer doing all recall work for free. Dealer service will now cost typically hundreds of dollars, with no guarantee that the problem will be fixed, and most importantly, that the problem will not return! When the column lock failure strikes, SERVICE COLUMN LOCK and/or PULL KEY, WAIT 10 SECONDS messages are displayed on the Driver Information Center, and the vehicle is rendered immobile by shutting off the fuel supply. Well, it can go up to 2 mph, (yes, that’s 2 mph). If no recalls were ever done, the steering wheel won’t turn either. With any of the recalls completed, the steering wheel will turn, so you could hopefully pull to the side of the road...eventually...at 1 to 2 mph. One available fix is the LMC5 modification. It is an inexpensive, reliable and easy to install cure for the steering column lock ailment. No complex removal of interior panels or other components is necessary to install. The entire installation is in the passenger footwell, and takes most people less than 20 minutes. The ONLY tools required are supplied with the kit. A low battery can trigger the vehicle computer into thinking there is a steering column lock failure, or can also cause the fuel to be shut off, even in many 1997-2004 Corvettes that weren't part of the recalls. The LMC5 will prevent a low battery from causing additional, difficult to diagnose, steering column lock or fuel shut-off headaches. The LMC5 has been exhaustively tested in Corvettes with low batteries. Even as the battery becomes too discharged to start the car, the LMC5 still maintains sync with the BCM (Body Control Module) every time the key is inserted! The LMC5 is the only column lock replacement that synchronizes itself with the Corvette’s computer every time the vehicle is started, and again every time the key is removed, virtually eliminating the possibility of a sustained column lock error due to the BCM getting out of sync with the LMC5 module. It has NO moving parts, connects only to the BCM, and can be easily installed in minutes. At least one of our club members has had this problem and installed the modification.

LMC5 MODULE

FOR ALL 1997-2004 C5 Corvettes

Volume XXX Issue 9 September 2020

Classic Glass Corvette Club

15

The LMC5 is an easy to install module that completely simulates a perfectly functioning steering column lock system. This 100% solid-state module, with no moving parts, synchronizes with your C5's computer (BCM) every time you start your car. The LMC5 repairs and prevents virtually ALL column lock failures from disabling your Corvette, and prevents:

The SERVICE COLUMN LOCK message

The PULL KEY, WAIT 10 SECONDS message

The 2 MPH fuel cut-off.

Over 126,000 Corvettes have been recalled for this column lock problem, but these recalls DID NOT permanently fix the problem.

The LMC5 can be installed in ANY 1997-2004 Corvette, makes no permanent modifications to your Corvette, and requires NO removal or alteration of any recall procedures or any other column lock replacement device!

Simply install the LMC5 in the passenger footwell, and your column lock problems are gone! You NEVER have to do any time-consuming and frustrating dash disassembly, circuit testing, relay checking or any other diagnostic procedures!

Thanks to Compliance Parts for the above information. Their website and information to obtain the LMC5 is:

HELP SUPPORT THE NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM!

NCM will be bringing items from the Corvette Store to sell at the SuperVette Saturday event on September

12 and to VetteStock on October 24. (The Governor of Kentucky, as of August 27, has lifted the COVID-19

travel restrictions).

Please support these two events by signing up and purchasing items at the events. VetteStock is a car show

planned specifically to raise funds for the NCM.

2020 has been a difficult year for all charitable organizations, clubs, museums, etc. to raise funds to keep their

organizations open. I have been really impressed with how the National Corvette Museum has come up with

so many new educational events, as well as updating the museum itself with new displays to encourage

members to keep coming back to see something different. I was thinking of how do we, members and non -

members, help the National Corvette Museum raise funds?

If you are not a member, now is the time to join the museum. Even if you are not comfortable driving

up to attend events this year due to COVID-19, why not start planning for next year.

Plan the events at the museum you want to attend next year. The main events that the CGCC plan on

the events calendar are the Bash and the Anniversary Celebration.

If you want to expand your trip to the museum, try out the Museum-in-Motion tours or the Motor

Sports Park events and do not forget to shop at the Corvette Store and have lunch at the Café. In

addition, check out the NCM Insurance Agency and the Library & Archives where you can purchase

build sheets, window stickers, photos, and tempered glass ornaments (made from your photo).

Purchase a raffle ticket for a new Corvette.

Purchase bricks or a bench to honor, celebrate or recognize a special person.

Donate funds directly to the museum. Those who have donated more than $1,000 the previous year,

have named the Museum in their estate plans, or made cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more since

January 1, 2003 are invited to attend the Winner’s Circle Banquet during the Anniversary celebration

(This is an invitation only event).

DON’T OBSCURE YOUR TAG! By Winston Whitlock

When you see the flashing blue lights go on behind you, and the police are obviously signaling YOU to pull over, the

first thing I think of is, “What did I do?”

This happened to me a few years ago in the Buckhead area near West Paces Ferry Road. I was driving my Honda CR-V.

I pulled over on Buckhead Avenue and while the policeman was running my tag, I retrieved my driver’s license and

proof of insurance. I know the police can check my insurance, but I’m getting ahead of the game… don’t make him ask!

“Cooperate and maybe escape with a finger wagging!” I lowered the driver’s window and kept both hands in sight. No

sense in making him any more nervous than I am.

He asked for my license and as he was inspecting it, he said, “Sir, first let me thank you for keeping your hands in sight.

It makes my job a bit easier.”

With that, I replied, “If it makes your job easier, then I that’s good for both of us!” I took a breath and smiled.

“I noticed that your license plate is covered with a piece of plastic. Would you please get out of the car and come to the

back to explain?”

Unlike today’s generation…I’m NOT going to argue. Just do as he asks! Keeping my right hand in plain sight on the

steering wheel I asked, “May I use my left hand to open the door?”

“Sure, thank you for the courtesy.”

I walked to the back of the car and he pointed to my license plate. I had put a plastic cover on my license plate that,

when viewed from directly behind, clearly showed the plate. However, the Fresnel lens would distort the tag when

viewed from any other angle.

“Did you put this on the car or did your dealer?”

I’m not going to lie so I told the truth. “I did, sir.”

“It’s against the law to intentionally distort your license tag.” He wrote me a ticket.

When I went to pay online, the law is written where the intentional distortion of a tag is a misdemeanor but…you

MUST appear in court and the fine is up to $1000.00 plus points on your license.

You can best believe that when I got home, I took the distortion plastic off of both cars!

When I went to court, the policeman didn’t show up. However, the prosecutor asked me to talk to him before court went

into session. I showed him that I had removed the plastic and apologized for causing the problem.

“Mr. Whitlock, I’ve reviewed your driving record and it is absolutely clean. Since you’ve corrected the problem, and

I’m assuming that you won’t do this again, I will offer to the judge that you plead guilty and pay a court fee of $10.00

and no points on your record. How does that sound to you?”

I jumped on that right away.

When my time came before the judge, she asked how I plead. “Guilty your honor and I apologize to the court for

causing the problem to begin with.”

She accepted the prosecutor’s offer and let me off with a warning not to do that again! I paid the court costs and went

home.

The point is: If you have any obscuration on your license plate, take it off! If I didn’t have a spotless record to begin

with, I’d been out $1000.00 and gotten points!

Reference: O.C.G.A. § 40-2-6.1. Obscuring license plate in order to impede surveillance equipment. Any person who

willfully covers any license plate with plastic, other material, or any part of his or her body in order to prevent or

impede the ability of surveillance equipment to clearly photograph or otherwise obtain a clear image of the license plate

is guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $1,000.00.

Corvettes at Carlisle 2020 Carlisle PA

August 26-30, 2020 Photos by Don Bailey

Approximately 3,500 Corvettes were at Carlisle this year and included in that number were our club members Bob & Sheila Catapano, Scott and Aileen Marshall, Jose Rivas, Bob Zajicek and Don and Joanne Bailey. Attendance was down this year due to rain and COVID-19. Although rain caused the parade to be cancelled, there was a lot to see and do; auction, raffle, vendors, and naturally, admire the Corvettes!
