DOMENIQUE WAYS SERVING WITH A SERVANT’S HEART

While driving home after her shift on a frigid December afternoon, Solid Waste Services Operator Domenique Ways spotted a nude man on a bridge in west Atlanta. With her sister, Daiysha, following her, the Ways sisters used their privately owned vehicles to protect the man from on-coming rush hour traffic. Domenique also gave the young man her protective mask and placed her exercise clothing on him to shield him from the cold.

Atlanta resident Oz Hill observed the incident and assisted the petite sisters as they moved the six-foot-plus gentleman to the shoulder of the roadway. The man could not support his weight as his feet were bloody and his ankles were swollen.

Mr. Hill took the time to write to the City about Domenique’s selfless and heroic act. “Domenique managed the situation with the skill and precision of a military combat commander,” Hill explained. “As we moved the young man to the shoulder of the ramp, Ms. Ways communicated with the 911 operator, providing direction for the expedient arrival of emergency medical services and APD.”

Hill also stated, “[Domenique’s] life-saving actions reflect the very best of the City of Atlanta and in my humble, unqualified, and unsolicited opinion provides an example of the respect for humanity that is worthy of emulation by every person in our society and deserves recognition.”

“As I observed the compassion, kindness, and professionalism demonstrated by Ms. Domenique Ways, it was one of my proudest moments as a resident of this great city.” - Oz Hill, Atlanta Resident

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS UPDATE | WHERE ARE WE NOW? On March 18th, COA moves from Phase 1 to Phase 2 of the Reopening plan due to improvements in the Gatekeeping Metrics and Monitored Indicators. All COVID preventive measures remain active, wearing a face mask is still a City of Atlanta mandate and non-essential City facilities remain closed to the public. Continued improvements are needed to move toward Phase 4 “Recovery” -Phase 5 “New Normal” where

individuals, business and city government will be encouraged to resume larger gatherings with COVID safety requirements remaining in place. Employees are to remain vigilant with preventive COVID-19 measures:

• Wash hands frequently • Clean hard surfaces regularly • Practice social distancing • Know the COVID-19 symptoms• Follow the Mayor’s Executive Order to wear a face mask and coverings

The DPW Virtual Townhall detailed COVID-19 Updates, Changes to Service Schedule and Departmental Announcements. The DPW Minute Message was featured in the town hall. DID YOU KNOW? It takes 90% less energy to manufacture an aluminum can from recycled aluminum and aluminum can be recycled forever.

It can be melted down and reformed without losing any quality, and the process can be repeated.
