Show Support for NBAF Recently,PresidentObamasubmittedhis2013budgetanddidnotincludefurtherfundingfortheNationalBioandAgro-DefenseFacility(NBAF)inManhattan,Kan. NBAFhasbeenfullyvettedandpassedeveryapprovalprocessnecessaryforconstructiontobegin,includingrecentdesignchangesthatwilldramaticallycurbpotentialthreatsfromtheplannedfacility.TheofficialstatusupdatefromtheDepartmentofHomelandSecurityconfirmsthattheyarecommittedtobuildingNBAFinManhattan,Kan.,andintheKCAnimalHealthCorridor. ItisimportantthatcompanieswithintheKCAnimalHealthCorridormaintainregionalsolidarityandremaindiligentinsupportofbuildingthisnewstate-of-the-artNBAF. ThepurposeofNBAFisperfectlyalignedwiththeworkalreadybeingdonebythe220companiesand20,000peopleemployedintheanimalhealthindustryintheKansasCityregion.ThelocationinManhattan,Kan.,waschosenduetotheproximitytotheBiosecurityResearchInstitutethatisalreadyconductingverysimilarhigh-containmentresearch. Atthenationallevel,thecurrentfacilityinPlumIslandisnolongerideal.TheUnitedStatesistheworld’slargestagriculturalexporter–imagineifthoseproductswerecompromised.Ournationdeservesastate-of-theartlabtofullyprotectouragriculturalassets. FortheKCregion,theNBAFprojectisproofthatourareaisthecenteroftheglobalanimalhealthindustry.NBAFrepresentsanassetthatwouldbringsignificantvalue,credibilityandtalenttotheKCAnimalHealthCorridor. PleasehelpuscontinuethemessagethatNBAFneedstobebuilt,anditneedstobebuiltintheKCAnimalHealthCorridor.Contactyourlocalelectedofficialstoencourageon-goingsupportfromtheirofficesandshareyourthoughtsusingyourowncommunicationschannels.

TheKCAnimalHealthCorridoroffersauniquelysupportiveenvironmentfullofpromisingopportunitiesforcompanieslookingtoexpandintotheNorthAmericanmarket.Inearly2012,PrathistaIndustriesLimited,aninternationalanimalhealthcompany,selectedtheKCAnimalHealthCorridortolocateanR&Dandproductionfacility. Thecompanyplanstocreateupto10jobsinManhattan,Kan.,whilepartneringwithKansasStateUniversityonresearch.AftercontinuedR&Dwork,Prathistaplanstoconstructa52,000sq.ft.permanentmanufacturingfacility,creatingapproximately50newjobs.

TheresearchstrengthsandcollaborationopportunitieswithintheCorridorweremajorfactorsinthecompany’sdecisiontoexpandintoManhattan.

CAHI’suniquepositionofcombiningearlystageseedfundingandcommercialexitoptionscontinuestoattractsignificantinterestfromacademicandentrepreneursalike.CAHInotonlysupportsfundingofinnovativetechnologiesthroughitsproofofconceptfunding,theyalsoopenthedoorstofollow-onfundingintheformofinvestments,licensing,orindustry-sponsoredsupport. ThroughCAHI’svariednationalandinternationalinteractions,theyfurtherreinforcetheCorridor’spositionasthoughtleaderonanimalhealthresearchwithintheindustryandwithinotherstatesandcountrieswithanimalhealthinitiatives.TheyaimtofurtherstrengthentheabilityoftheKCAnimalHealthCorridortoserveexistingandprospectiveCorridororganizations.

TheCorridorConversationseventonJanuary20includedapaneldiscussiononvariousstateincentivesforthehightechsectorsoftheanimalhealthindustry.Thiswell-attendedeventwasheldinconjunctionwiththeMissouriGovernor’sConferenceonAgriculture.TonySimpsonoftheKansasBioscienceAuthorityandKimYoungoftheKansasCityAreaDevelopmentCouncilmoderatedthediscussion.Thepanelistsincluded:

Legislative Update TheChamberhasbeenactivelyworkingwiththeregion’scongressionaldelegationinWashington,D.C.,aswellasKansasGovernorSamBrownbackandhisstaffontheNBAFissue.Inaddition,onMarch15,RepresentativeLynnJenkins(KS-2)addressedagroupatTheChamber,andNBAFwasanimportanttopic(photo, right). New Veterinary Assistant Program Gains NAVTA Credentials, Available Through KC Animal Health Corridor

WiththerecentapprovalfromtheNationalAssociationofVeterinaryTechniciansofAmerica(NAVTA),thenewMetropolitanCommunityCollege’s(MCC)VeterinaryAssistantprogramcannowbeofferedthroughouttheKCAnimalHealthCorridor. Asoneofonlysixinstitutionsinthecountry,theMCCVeterinaryAssistantprogramhopestoprovideapipelineofskilledworkerstoathrivingregionalindustry. Toearntheindustry-associatedcredential,graduatesoftheMCCprogrammusttaketheNAVTA-approvedVeterinaryAssistantexam.Theprogramfunctionsusingonlinecourseworkandhands-onexperienceatlocalveterinaryclinics.Graduateswillentertheanimalhealthindustrypreparedforavarietyofentry-leveljobsincludingassistingveterinariansandveterinarytechniciansinclinics. Theprogramwillbeavailablelaterthisspring.

Bayer Acquisition to Strengthen Insecticides Market, KC Animal Health Corridor

BayerHealthCare’sAnimalHealthDivisionrecentlyannounceditsacquisitionoftheanimalhealthinsecticidesbusinessfromKMGChemicalsInc. Underthepurchaseagreement,BayerwillacquireKMG’sleadingbrandofcattleinsecticideeartagsintheU.S.,Patriotcattleeartag,andtheinsecticidesRabonandPermectrin.Inaddition,Bayerispurchasingtheinsecticidetechnology,manufacturingequipmentandinventory,furtherstrengtheningtheKCAnimalHealthCorridor. “It’sacomplementtoourcurrentproductportfolioanditgivesustheopportunitytohaveabitmorerobustsolutionsforlivestockandpoultryproducers,”saidBayerspokeswomanStaciGouveia. Withtheacquisition,Bayerplanstoadvancetheinsecticidesmarketandstrengthenitsanimalhealthbusiness. “WealsobelievethatBayeristhebestcompanytohelpthisbusinessrealizeitspotential,andprovidesthelevelofserviceourcustomersexpectanddeserve,”saidNealButler,CEOofKMGChemicalsInc.

Since2006,theKansasCityAreaDevelopmentCouncilhasledadelegationofregionalanimalhealthindustryandcommunityleadersinsponsoringtheBrakkeConsultingnetworkingreceptionduringtheNorthAmericanVeterinaryConferenceandWesternVeterinaryConference. The North American Veterinary ConferenceisrecognizedasoneofthelargestgatheringsoftheanimalhealthindustryintheU.S.Co-sponsoredbytheAmericanVeterinaryDistributorsAssociation,thesereceptionsofferoneofthebestopportunitiestonetworkandbuildrelationshipswiththeworld’smostinfluentialanimalhealthcompanies.
