Trade complains about delivery delaysWe're overlookedsay small shopsSATISFACTION ABOUT the buoyantstate of the market is being tempered bya growing frustration among small, independent dealers facing long delaysover hot new product.

It alsoautomatically holds non -priority re-leases until they can be 'merged' withstock orders. This is fine until Poly -Gram find unexpected demand forproduct.

The company is understood to beworking on solutions to both of theseproblems, details of changes should beannounced this Summer.

EMI caused a few flutters by sending

out Iron Maiden cassettes ahead of thealbums, leading dealers to worry thatthe albums had got lost or those withoutcassette orders to fall behind. This`cassette first' pattern appears to begrowing.

The company's answer to criticismsof late delivery of Iron Maiden is that itdoes not discriminate. Illegal imports costScottish shop £20,000ANOTHER SCOTTISH retailer hasbeen caught dealing in illegal parallelimports. Phoenix Records of HighStreet, Edinburgh, agreed to pay£20,000 damages for selling the albumsin the latest move in the BPI's crack-down North of the border.

The LPs had been brought in fromCanada, and the action started followingan anonymous tip-off to the BPI'santi -piracy unit. The Scottish equiva-lent of an Anton Piller order wasobtained by the BPI on March 19.

More than 3,000 imports were takenaway from the shop when the order wasexecuted on March 22 by a commission-er appointed by the Scottish Court ofSession.

Plaintiffs in the action were EMI andRCA suing on their own behalf as well asrepresenting all members of the BPI.

In addition to the damages settlementPhoenix Records also agreed to perma-nent injunctions restraining them fromdealing in records manufactured in anon -EEC country and imported intothe UK.

Meanwhile, the wholesale and retailorganisation Southern Fran, of 410-412Oakleigh Road North, London N20,also gave undertakings pending furtherorder in the High Court on April 5 not todeal in illegal parallel imports.

Ronco From P.1.non-stop sequence of 33 tracks havebeen programmed, although only D -Train, Imagination and Tom Brownehave enjoyed recent chart success.Other acts on the albums include Lynx,Blondie, Modern Romance, Heatwave,Isley Brothers, Amii Stewart and Chic.Initial TV exposure, now running, is onCentral prior to national roll out.

"Twofers were initiated by Ronco toincrease volume and our margins havebeen shaved as well as the repertoirecompanies. I suppose future attitudeswill be conditioned by how well our newtwofer does - but I think we will still bereleasing them for some time to come,"said O'Brien.

Warwick is planning a couple oftwofers in the near future - The Hits Listset for May 3, and an as -yet -untitledcollection of songs from the 60s. Man-aging director Ian Miles confirmed thehardening attitude of the major com-panies: "They are looking for the sameroyalties per track on a forty -numberpackage as they would expect to get for asingle album," he said.

"That amounts to a 60 percent in-crease in royalty expenses in real terms.

"Other companies have asked us for£5,000 up front for each track plus aguarantee of £25,000 earnings against a20 percent royalty, on the first 150,000sales.

"That kind of demand has made itimpossible to do business with them. Itseems crazy to demand these terms at atime when the record industry is in sucha bad way. Any revenue from a compila-tion project like ours would be betterthan turning the business away - whichis what they are doing in effect."

BPI solicitors visited Southern Fran'spremises with a court order on March 31and took away a substantial number ofrecords. Plaintiffs in this action wereMotown, RCA and Chrysalis Records.

England squadon K-tel TV LPAN ALBUM featuring the EnglandWorld Cup Squad and containing solotracks by Kevin Keegan, Glen Hoddleand Ray Clements, plus a duet by VivAnderson and Trevor Francis, is beingreleased by K-tel on April 26.

Entitled This Time (NE 1169) andretailing at £5.99, the album will go ontest in the Granada region before anational campaign begins in the secondweek in May. In addition to the TVpromotion, K-tel will be additionallysupporting the LP with advertising infootball magazines and programmes andwill also be producing point -of -salematerial for in-store displays.

Compiled and co-ordinated by BillHurley and Mean Records partnersDave Crowe and Howard Berman, themen behind the current hit single 'ThisTime'/We'll Fly The Flag', the record'spackaging has been designed with a viewto giving football supporters somethingto read as well as hear. It is a 12 -pageinsert showing many action photo-graphs of the players as well as facts andfigures about the history of the WorldCup.

The solo tracks are 'Head Over Heels'(Keegan), 'We Are The Champions'(Hoddle), 'Road To Spain' (Clements),`You'll Never Walk Alone' (Andersonand Francis). Also included will be`Back Home' by the 1970 England team.

Boyce to ASV andJACK BOYCE, marketing director, hasbeen appointed managing director ofAcademy Sound and Vision at the end ofthe company's first year of trading.Harley Usill now becomes chairman, and will be concentrating on sponsoredrecordings and the company's move intoVideo later this year.

Ronco pioneersRONCO IS set to release the UK'sfirst 'four for the price of one'album package, and will back it witha TV campaign.

Entitled Music for the Seasons itgoes on -screen in the Harlech areafor three weeks from today (19) andwill then roll out nationally. It willbe priced at £5.99.

Enclosed in sleeves which showthe same tract of courtryside shotat four different times of the year,Music for the Seasons features non -copyright music played by a widevariety of orchestras, both famousand otherwise. The London Sym-phony Orchestra, The Royal

'Fourfer albumPhilharmonic and the Munich Sym-phony Orchestra are among thebetter known.

The package is similar in conceptto a classical direct -mail projectproduced by Tellydisc, sales ofwhich have encouraged Ronco toput the fourfer together, but at amuch lower price.

"It is an expensive exercise fromeveryone's point of view and I amnot sure it will ever be repeated. However, initial retail reaction hasbeen enthusiastic - once they real-ised we were serious," commentedRonco general manager SeanO'Brien.

Record and audio firmslink for joint promotionRECORD COMPANIES are forgingincreasing links with audio hardwaremanufacturers in mutual marketingcampaigns.

The latest to go into joint promotionare CBS and Sony in a two -month pressadvertising campaign for the Walkmanpersonal hi-fi.

During April and May purchasers ofthe Walkman II receive 50 vouchersentitling them to 50p off any CBSfull -price pre-recorded cassetts, re-deemable at branches of W H Smith.

The idea came from commercialmarketing director Peter Dixon at CBSwho approached Sony last year. Thescheme fitted in with Sony's Springcampaign on the up -dated Walkman.

"It was a logical step for a firmmarketing audio hardware to give awaysomething directly associated with theirproduct," remarked Dixon. "We havelimited the offer through W H Smith tofacilitate redemption, and of course ithelps generate traffic through theirstores.

RCA has also been co-operating witha hi-fi company. Earlier this year JVClaunched a promotion which entitledpurchasers of sound systems to five freeRCA catalogue titles.

The scheme was put together byspecial projects manager Ray Jenks andalthough initially planned as a six -weeklimited offer, it was so successful that ithas been extended.

Now CBS raises dealer pricesCBS HAS joined the companiesannouncing price rises this month, butthere is no sign of PolyGram followingsuit.

Following the lead of WEA, EMI,Arista-Ariola and Chrysalis, CBS hasincreased its standard album dealerprice to £3.20, "with reluctance".

CBS's decision not to raise singlesprices leaves EMI out on its own with45s at a dealer price of 85p. WEA's£1.49 dealer price on 12 -inch singles isalso unique.

CBS distributed label Jet is followingsuit but others such as Virgin and MCAhave yet to announce plans.

PolyGram's response is one of cau-tion. "We have yet to see it demons-trated that rising prices are in theinterest of any section of the industry, ourselves, dealers or customers. We arejust as liable to rising costs but think ourpricing structure is correct for thecurrent market," said Clive Swan, com-mercial director, PolyGram record op-erations.

Songwriter wins case against Jan OlofssonSINGER -SONGWRITER Trevor Wil-liams thought his luck had changedwhen his album of songs attracted theattention of record producer JanOlofsson.

But efforts to persuade record com-panies to take up world-wide rights inthe album came to nothing, and MrOlofsson went behind Mr Williams'back to make limited deals with twoEuropean companies, a High Courtjudge said on Wednesday.

Mr Justice Dillon granted Mr Wil-liams, of Shirland Road, Maida Vale,London, a declaration that he was thesole owner of the copyright in the wordsand music of nine taped songs, free of

any claim or interest by Mr Olofsson. The judge dismissed a claim by Mr

Olofsson, of Haverstock Hill, Hamp-stead, London, that the copyright in thesongs has been assigned to him by oralagreements with Mr Williams in 1977and 1978.

There was no reason why Mr Wil-liams should assign his copyrights be-fore a record company was prepared tomake a deal, said the judge.

Mr Williams, whose claim to substan-tial damages was rejected, was grantedinjunctions restraining Mr Olofssonfrom infringing his copyrights in thesongs.

The judge also directed Mr Olofsson

to account for a total of £5,452, sumsreceived from Bellaphon Records andPhonogram International, less expensesin recording the songs in the UnitedStates.

The judge said that Mr Williams was"down on his luck" when he met MrOlofsson in 1977.

Mr Olofsson thought that Mr Wil-liams had talent and potential as asinger -songwriter. But said the judge: "Ithink they were both bewitched by thethought that Mr Williams might enjoythe same meteoric success that has cometo some young men in the field ofpopular music."

The ProducersTim Friese-Greena self-confessedmug for pop music

WHEN TIM Friese-Green first came tothe attention of RB for inclusion in thisseries it was as a young producer of greatpotential. Since then he has ably provedthe point by creating a number onesingle.

Taking a standard like 'The LionSleeps Tonight' and creating a soundwhich is immediately attractive on discand on radio brought Friese-Green theultimate accolade. The achievement wasthe greater considering the many timesthat this song has previously been a hit.

He took the classic route to theproducers' chair, starting as a tape -opand graduating to engineer. How quick-ly an aspiring producer makes it, hesays, depends as much on good fortuneas ability.

"If you are enthusiastic and want tolearn you can progress quickly. Tape -opis the ideal way to start because you seeso many different engineers and so don'tget a limited a view of recording," hesaid.

From the start he was involved inprestigious projects like Queen's Sheer

Total control for Tight Fit's hit

Heart Attack. He also had the opportun-ity to work with a variety of artists likeThe Vibrators, Kursaal Flyers, ArtGarfunkel, New Seekers, SteeleyeSpan, UFO, Racing Cars, Sex Pistols,Graham Parker and the BoomtownRats.

"At Wessex at the time was RobertJohn 'Mutt' Lange whom Friese-Greendescribes as a "very together producerboth technically and musically" and hewas both a major influence and friend tohim. Lange is now one of the world'smost successful producers.

FOR A lover of pop music like Friese-Green the punk explosion came as amixed blessing. It provided useful ex-perience of studio experimentation butshook up previous preconceptions.

"The sound was definitely very grittyand it was a shock in the studio. It washard to forget all the training and makethe vocal sound nasty; make it lie in thetrack rather than put it up front likenormal pop vocals," he recalled.

He worked on the Sex Pistols at theinvitation of Mike Thorne, now betterknown as a producer in his own rightrather than an a&r chief.

His first job as a producer was The

Zones, for Arista, "I had been chompingat the bit for some time but it was not aneasy step. Although it didn't exactly setthe world alight it has become a cultitem. I still hear it played at clubs likethe Bottom Line in New York," he said.

On the strength of that production hewas signed to management by CliveCalder of Zomba - joining Lange. Hethen worked with The Records, scoringan American Top 40 hit with StaryEyes', from the Shades In Bed album.

It enabled him to seek work in theStates and learn more about the differ-ences in musical attitudes. He wassought out by acts which wanted tosound British, most notably DirtyLooks, who signed for Stiff.

"Most US acts play music as they areused to hearing it on the radio, and theytune in to radio all the time. It meansthat they are less adventurous. In theUK the battle is to find things that aredifferent but still commercial." he sum-med up.

HE RETURNED to the UK last yearand started to work with aspiring artistssuch as Australian John English. Gra-dually regular work began to build upand his Zomba relationship began to payhandsome dividends.

First, rock group Stiff Little Fingerssigned to Zomba for publishing; they

were looking for a producer who couldgive them a more commercial sound andFriese-Green was brought in. 'Listen',his single with the band, became theirmost successful, reaching 21 in the RBTop 100.

Then Zomba's Jive label wanted aproducer for its Tight Fit act and againthe job went to Friese-Green. The resultcould not have been more successful.

"I am a self-confessed mug for popmusic. It was great fun doing 'The LionSleeps Tonight'. I had total control, doing string arrangements and every-thing," he said.

It is not always as easy because heoften works with a band with a trackrecord and has to learn how to adapt. "Itis very important to work out anapproach to the bands as individuals. These days they have a much better ideaof what they want."

"In the end though it is the producerwho makes the decisions. It is hard forthose involved to be objective - they aretoo close to their own ideas and pro-jects," he said.

Friese-Green engineers his own re-cordings and tries to get as much of thesound as possible in the recording, rather than the mix. He fmds the thrillin the recording and feels an anti -climaxat the end of the final mix.

"Some records would be hits if it wasMetal Mickey in the chair but mostrequire the creative input of a producer.

"The life of a producer is very short sohe must be constantly updating ideas. Itis actually not much fun working in adark studio 18 hours a day and produc-ers do not have steady careers. A littlebit of success gets people reaching foryou and two hit albums is enough to earna fortune," said Friese-Green.

Take K-tel's Best Of The Four Tops(NE1160/CE2160), for which the dealeris expected to pay £4.14 plus VAT andthe customer £5.99. Yet this album isidentical, including the order of thetracks, to the Four Tops' 20 GoldenGreats in the Motown stable and still

ObservationPost

current through RCA (MTV26/CMTV26). I wonder how many dealersrealised this and stocked the original, saving the customer at least £1 andgiving themselves a much healthiermargin. Not many, I suspect, otherwiseit would be MTV26 listed in the charts!

But for true confusion, and here Ihave every sympathy with K-tel, thesaga of the Keep Fit promotions reallytakes the biscuit. Simultaneously wehad the mail -order -only ("This record isnot available in record shops" - but fewconsumers understood it) Shape Up AndDance and K-tel's notification of TakeShape And Dance. The latter had to bewithdrawn following an injunction be-cause of confused similarity in titles.K-tel reissued it as Keep Fit And Dance.

Now, despite the fact that my custom-ers who ordered Shape Up And Dance(Vol. 1) have not received it six weekssince, we find that Vol. 2 of that title is tobe TV advertised but this time is onlyavailable through record shops! Con -

Felicity Kendall showing the rewardsfor the Shape Up And Dance album. But there was confusion for customersand dealers.

sumer confusion? I'll say. Dealer confu-sion too!

Once again we are at the time of yearwhen prices are being eased upwards.EMI is taking the lead on singles with an85p dealer price on this year's record todate, only one in twenty of EMI singlesreleases stand a chance of making areasonable showing in the charts and, hence, a reasonable profitability. Cutthe number of releases and maintainprices, I say.

The other angle to this is the matter ofretail pricing - how many outlets will bein the 95p - 99p bracket now? Thesensible price and reasonable margin foran 85p dealer price single is now £1.45!If we all charged this price I'm con-vinced that EMI would soon cut its clothand drop prices to allow a more reason-able retail price.

We dealers really ought to put on areasonable mark-up. Let's face it, mostof us have experienced static or decreas-ing profits this last couple of years whileoverheads have rocketed. Simply, if weare not realistic in our retail pricing wewon't be around much longer to supportthe specialist aspects of this industry. Thus majors like EMI will have no

option but to cut back still further.Although I have some sympathy with

the view that credit card commission isonerous on the retailer and shouldinstead perhaps be an onus on cardholders, I have no sympathy whateverwith the retailing chain Our Price whoclaim margins are so tight that it can nolonger keep the credit card facility.Retailers are supposed to give the bestpossible service to customers. Yes, itcosts, but service incurring overheads isreflected in pricing policy. Credit cardsdo not account for a very significantproportion of sales (if they did, then thatwould be what the customer wanted)and the commission charge on creditcards is just another overhead. Are wenot to accept cheques because proces-sing them is reflected in our bankcharges?

Of course, what Our Price does is itsbusiness but as a reflection on the stateof the industry as a whole, its ourbusiness. I was horrified to learn from acustomer that one of their staff said, inanswer to an enquiry: "No, sorry mate, only what's in 'ere." For myself -a mailorder, but for the industry - an,indictment.

On the subject of service, I'm surethat many of us with concern for ourcustomers are very worried by theapparent lack of pressing capability andlateness in supplies of new releases beingexperienced from all the record com-panies. If the industry cannot cope nowit will be in a powerless state shouldconditions improve. Improvement sure-ly is what wee are all suffering andworking for.

MARTIN ANSCOMBEPS. My thanks to Tony Berry ofPinnacle for his reply (RB March 29) tomy last article. He summed up well whatI was trying to say - let's hope theindependent labels get the message!

M . A .Due to a typographical error, a nought wasremoved from Tony Berry's impressivestatistic about Pinnacle's sales of `Rabbit'.The distributor did, of course, shift300,000 copies without a hitch - Editor.

Talking Heads get the HMV treatment

Getting the message across - HMV Oxford Street gave over one entire window to a Talking Heads display, completewith TV screens, to support the live album The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads.

a dealersuccess inCovent GardenFROM THE modest beginnings of tworecord collectors pooling their personalcollections to form a specialist shop,That's Entertainment now stands as aforce to be reckoned with - in intetna-tional terms.

The numbers may not be vast but thedecision of graphic designer John Yapand actor Patrick Martyn to specialise intheir favourite market of stage andscreen recordings has paid handsomedividends.

Today they have a thriving shopThat's Entertainment in the heart ofLondon's trendy Covent Garden mar-ket, a mail order business with anoverseas reputation, and their ownrecord label with 'hits' to its credit.

Being acknowledged experts in such aspecialised area TE quickly establisheditself, initially in Drury Lane, and sincehas opened as a shopping centre in thenew Covent Garden market. Both loca-tions put them in the centre of one of theworld's greatest proliferations oftheatres and cinemas.

In order to build up stocks they had toopen accounts all over the world; whichis both a testament to the world-wideappeal of show and film music and anindictment of UK companies who havebeen sitting on rights for years with noplans to exploit them.

Initially the customers were collec-tors, every bit as fanatical about themarket as Martyn and Yap but, especial-ly since the move to Covent Garden, thishas widened to include a wide crosssection of the general public, albeitadult, looking for nothing more special-ised than The Sound Of Music sound-track.

"We knew there was a market andhave proved it. We have been successfulsimply because there is no competition. The large stores and the record com-panies are not interested in the genre,"said Yap.

Imports still play a large part in theretail business -a new Broadway show isguaranteed hundreds of UK album sales- but there is little chance of domesticrelease and many soundtracks are re-leased only in Japan, Australia and, ofcourse America.

In addition TE has made a point ofobtaining rare and deleted material tomaintain the collectors' side of thebusiness. These records fetch very goodprices, but have to be bought at apremium.

Worldwide customers now make TEa place to visit on their trips to the UK,and TV and radio stations from the UKand abroad rely on the shop to provideshow and film music for their libraries.

In 1980 the business was such asuccess that the partners looked for anavenue of expansion. They found it inrecord production and they have recent-ly negotiated UK distribution with PRTfor That's Entertainment Records, asister company.

The move was an immediate successas Yap and Martyn set about fillingvoids they, as retailers, knew existed. Arecording of the London show Pal Joeyproved immensely popular and on thesoundtrack side they picked up theprestigious Escape From New Yorkrights.

This success has led to TE beingapproached to release soundtracks andthey are set to have great success withMad Max 2 (TER 1016). In additioninterest is high in Underneath The Arches(TERX 1015) - the Flanagan & Allenshow currently wowing London audi-ences.

Not only does TE rescue show record-ings but it has also gone to the unpre-cedented length of re -assembling origin-al casts for recording. In the case of Iand Albert it involved bringing PollyJames and Swedish actor Sven BertilTaube back after eight years for alimited edition of 2,500 albums, whichhas almost sold out at £9.99 each.

The elevation of American John Wil-liams into a soundtrack superstar fol-lowing his Jaws score inspired a record-ing of his only musical Thomas And TheKing with the London cast five yearsafter it closed.

Considering the perennial success ofSalad Days TE was surprised to find norecording on catalogue and so gathered arevival cast, including Elizabeth Sealand Sheila Steafel, and managed to havecomposer Julian Slade on piano.

Another success is Swan Down Gloves(TER 1017), a Royal Shakespeare pro-duction which is set for annual revivalsin both London and Stratford.

This year's big project is the onlyrecording of Richard Rodger's last

Interest is highin UnderneathThe Arches,currentlywowingLondonaudiences.

Broadway musical I Remember Mamawith the strong possibility of 'a bigmusical star' to head the cast.

For the future TE is looking to video."The audiences of London and Broad-way are lucky to be able to see theseshows but there are thousands of mil-lions of people all over the world whowill never get the opportunity," saidYap.

That's Entertainment has the proudboast of, 'If it has been recorded we willsupply it' - which means having 99percent of current London shows avail-able, and it is setting about searching forthat elusive one percent.

Tommy Jr waltzesoff to form BlankTOMMY SANDERSON and his son,Tommy Junior, both run record labelsfrom an office in Soho Street, London. The premises also house a shop sellingthe kind of glittering fabrics from whichballroom dresses are made.

Sanderson Senior's label is DansanRecords which specialises in the stricttempo music necessary for competitiveballroom dancing. In a contrast whichcould scarcely be more marked, theyounger Sanderson's label is BlankRecords, in existence only since lastmonth and less specialist. Tommy Jnrused to be co -manager of Any Troubleand The Stiffs and publisher for heavyrock band Def Leppard. Unfortunatelyhis company, Marksmen Music, closeddown just before Christmas. "Basically Ileft with a need to create a job", admitsTommy. "At Dansan they already hadthe pressing and distribution (throughthe usual indies), facilities for sleeveprinting, plus the advantage of beingsmall."

The first artist to spring to mind forBlank's debut recording was Tommy'sfriend, singer Eddie Howell. It wasEddie, however who discovered the

demos of a band called The Kadettesand put them forward. "He knew Iwanted to get a label together and one ofthe tracks, 'Fireball XL5', we boththought was a really commercial idea, soI offered them a singles deal. The singleby Eddie has been put on ice for themoment, as it's really a one-man opera-tion here."

Reaction to the finished product, impeccably produced by Simon Hum-phrey and released on April 2, has so farbeen good. Many local radio stationshave playlisted it and several have madeit their Hit Pick/Record Of The Week.

Tommy is looking for more bands orartists to record and develop. "I'd like tosteer the label in a broad -based direc-tion, he says. "It could be pop, ballads, novelty songs or even African drummusic if I thought it was going to becommercial. We don't want to close thedoor on anybody, and I'm certainlyinterested in hearing any demo tapes."

Sanderson Jnr can be contacted atBlank Records, 14 Soho Street, Lon-don W1V 6HB. Telephone 01-437 2245or 01-278 0928. 'Fireball XL5' (GET 1)by The Kadettes is available through theindie distribution network.

Album Reviews Album reviews Cont. from P.16

THE DARK: Chemical Warfare(Fresh LP 9) Prod: Sean Purcell/TheDarkDebut album from punk bank The

Dark which should make some inroadsinto the lndie charts. The music isabrasive but the production is clearenough to make a little more sensethan most of the punk fodder currentlyon release. The 11 -track album in-cludes the current single 'The Mas-que'. Apart from the single, otherstandout tracks include 'French Toys'and 'On The Wires'. The low dealerprice should make for healthy sales fora while.

MICHAEL O'SHEA: Michael O'She(Dome/Rough Trade DOM 33-2)Prod: B.C. Gilbert/G. LewisA fascinating virtuoso performance byIrishman Michael O'Shea who canoften be seen busking in London'sCovent Garden. His instrument is MoCara (literally 'My Friend'), cross be-tween a Zelochord and sitar, in theshape of a dulcimer. It has an echo boxand electronic amplification and isplayed by striking the strings withhammers. The sound is peculiar to theinstrument, although borrowing itsbasic tone from the sitar. The music isa rich, melodic progression, as fasci-nating as the electronic creations ofMike Oldfield. More reviews P.19

Disco DealerTHE EASTER holiday saw a slowingdown of the flood of new releases andimports which have swpet onto thedisco market recently, but the chart isas active as ever. Almost inevitably, the reissued 'Papa's Got A Brand NewPig Bag' by Pig Bag was going tore-enter the disco chart too, as it hasvirtually every other chart in the lastcouple of weeks. In fact, the new12 -inch pressing took off like a rocketin specialist shops this week; whichhas put the title straight into the top tenand looking a serious contender fornumber one; certainly this has grownto be the archetypal UK futurist -funknumber.

Big jumps for Patrice Rushen andSharon Brown as they move ontodomestic release, also for Stone's`Time', which has been hangingaround in the lower reaches of the 20for two months as an import, and nowfinally pierces the top 10.

Junior's 'Mama Used To Say',knocking at the number one slot on theAmerican black music charts, and justoutside the pop top 40, might havebeen expected to hit the top ten too, after last week's number 25 debut leap;the relatively minor climb to number19 is something of a disappointment, though next week should see anothersales surge for it. Last week's topnewie by the Rah Band has also sloweddown a little, but nobody at KR islikely to be disappointed by a top 10entry in its second chart week.

Looking at the newer items, Vog-gue's 'Love Buzz' is the first Canadiannoisemaker for a while, and has builthealthily in its two weeks in the shops. The Peech Brothers, a totally un-known act, are also piling on theimport sales. Brand-new 12-inchersare notable for their absence, thoughthere are new albums in the shops fromPatrice Rushen (Straight From TheHeart), Le Pamplemousse (My Love IsBurning Up), Marcio Montarroyas(Magic Moments), and a Japanese setfrom jazzman Dave Grusin (Out Of TheShadow).

One new white label pressing ismaking its presence felt: ICQ's 'FinalApproach', which seems to have hadlimited distribution but has nonethe-less already crept into the breakers.

ALBUM REVIEWS

Top 10STATUS QUO: 1982 (Vertigo 6302189) Prod: Status Quo20 years in the business and Quo isstill going strong - its own brand ofthree chord boogie as recognisable asound as any in rock. The singles havealways been considered inter-changeable, even those not written bythe group such as the latest 'DearJohn', soundalike, but in the past thereal depth and breadth of the grouphas been reserved for albums. This isnot true of the latest LP which containsslice after slice of the simple songswhich Quo have made their trademark. There are enough Quo fans out thereto make finding new audiences un-necessary and this album will no doubtgo to the top.

Top 20RAINBOW: Straight Between TheEyes (Polydor POLD 5056) Prod:Roger GloverHM fans are in their element right now, with new albums from Iron Maiden andMotorhead now being joined by thiseffort from Rainbow. While Rainbowcan switch on the afterburner andcompete in decibels and frenzy withthe best of them, the band alsodisplays a capacity for more thansimply playing at the speed of sound. They can turn their hand to the lightand shade of a good climactic ballad, and 'Tearin' Out My Heart' is a high -spot of a very good album, whichreflects all the considerable experi-ence that the seasoned Rainbow cannow bring to their recorded output.

Top 40GOOMBAY DANCE BAND: SevenTears (Epic EPC 85702) Prod:Jochen PetersenOne hit single doesn't automaticallycreate a best-selling album, but thistuneful slice of Europop should chartwithout difficulty. With the demise ofBoney M the Germans have adroitlyfilled the gap with an act that is nearenough a soundalike. Certainly thecommercial formula of cosy, singalongmelodies with a pronounced discobeat is being exploited with the sameskill. But why is the most saleableMOR music all being imported, ratherthan being created here?

ERIC CLAPTON: Time Pieces (RSORSD5010) Prod: VariousResurgence of interest in Clapton'sclassic 'Layla' bodes well for thealbum's sales prospects. A these -you -have -loved retrospective of Clapton'srehabilitated laid-back form of rock, it istuneful and inoffensive enough to winsupport from AOR toetappers. 'AfterMidnight', 'I Shot The Sheriff', 'LayDown Sally' are among Clapton's mostpopular tracks which are featured, andwell worth a repeat listen.

Top 60RY COODER: The Slide Area (War-ner Bros K56976) Prod: Ry Cooder/

RY COODER: The Border (MCAMCF 3133)The first of these albums is Cooder'snew studio release. Aware of hisrecently found status as left -fieldsuperstar, he kicks it off with a synth-esiser -influenced track 'UFO HasLanded In The Ghetto', which barelycomes off, and continues in the stylehe has lately been following - aloosely -textured, urban R&B approachwhich takes in song material by BobDylan, Carl Perkins, Willie Dixon andCooder himself. It's all well enoughdone but it lacks the spark which madeBorderline such a memorable album. The other album on MCA, is actually asoundtrack to the forthcoming TheBorderfilm, and the fact that this movieis directed by Tony Richardson andstars Jack Nicholson and HarveyKeitel will give it much more exposurethan other films for which Cooder hascomposed. It includes the guest voicesof Freddie Fender and John Hiatt aswell as Cooder's own, and the mix isthe more traditional Cooder one of hisChicken Skin Music period - a laid-back offering of rock, Mexican, countryand poignant guitar instrumentals. Thefirst album is the promoted one but thesecond will have appeal for Cooder'soriginal followers and with the manselling out a string of dates in Londonnext month, the chances are good forboth LPs.

THE LOTTE BERK EXERCISECLASS - GET PHYSICAL (WarwickWW 5122)This latest in the Keep Fit albumsstakes features Lotte Berk, who runs aLondon keep fit studio, and takes thehousewife looking for a regular butnot -too -arduous daily exercise stintthrough one of Lotte's sessions, butwith Sally Thomsett doing thetalking instead. The music isMOR with light disco tinges and iscomposed by Roger Webb of TV andfilm music fame. A foldout, pin-up chartillustrating the exercises completeswhat looks to be a thorough and usefulpackage for those looking to improvetheir shape with an easy, homemethod.

JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS:I Love Rock'n'RoII (Epic EPC 85686)Prod: Ritchie Cordell/KennyLagunaThis album and the title track havetopped both the American singles andalbum charts in recent weeks, and it'snot hard to see why. Since the Run-aways headed up a blind alley, Ms Jetthas toughened up her sound, broughtin some hard-bitten male rock'n'rollersand with the help of a seasonedproduction team has put together araunchy set of ten straightforwardnumbers with instant appeal. It's all abit LCD, with Joan posing as a preda-tory female or switching stereotypes, but it works well. In addition to the titletrack, look out for her version of 'BitsAnd Pieces' and 'You're Too Posses-sive'.ELTON JOHN: Jump Up! (RocketHISPD 127) Prod: Chris ThomasGood stuff from Elton John this timearound. His career has been one ofmarked ups and downs in the pastthree or four years but this is a definite

Faces ofheavy rock

Cheetah: from AC/DC stable.

Quo: simple songs.

Up, with a selection of songs co -writtenwith partners Bernie Taupin (thethoughtful ones) and Gary Osborne(the rocking ones) with a single col-laboration with Tim Rice - the strong'Legal Boys'. Elton's tribute to Lennon'Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)'stays the right side of maudlin and thesingle 'Blue Eyes' looks as if it willclimb high, so the augurs seem favour-able for Jump Up.

Best of the restCHEETAH: Rock & Roll Women(Epic EPC 85522) Prod: Vanda/YoungLed by the beautiful vocalist sistersLyndsay and Chrissie Hammond,Cheetah is the latest project from theAlbert Productions stable which hasunearthed talents like AC/DC fromdown under in past years. A heavyrock act in the standard mould backsthe girls, who have remarkably power-ful voices, but the material is alsorather standard and it is going to take atour from the band to really get acrossthe sexy image and tour -de -forcestage show. As soon as that happensEpic will have a hit on its hands.

VARIOUS: P.S. I Love You (WarwickWW5121)A collection of 18 love songs of manyand varied styles from the Brit -funk ofLinx to the smoothy sound of JulioIglesias in successive tracks. Thiscompilation matches division one ta-

lents such as The Nolans, Abba, ReoSpeedwagon and Bucks Fizz with anumber who have not had the samechart success: Bill Withers, GraceKennedy, Champaign, Helen Reddy,Rita Coolidge, Hi Gloss, Roger Webb,Quincy Jones and KC & The SunshineBand, but also includes such one -offsas 'What Becomes Of The BrokenHearted' by Colin Blunstone and DaveStewart.

THE 4 -SKINS: The Good, The BadAnd The 4 -Skins (Secret SEC 4)Prod: 4-Skins/Tim ThompsonNot quite the punky thrash one mighthave expected; there are times whenthis lays back a bit for a more consi-dered feel - but the heavy bass andmixed -back menacing vocals are al-ways there, often giving the album aslightly heavy metal feel. The titles areobligatory Oi! ideas like 'Plastic Gang-sters', 'Jack The Lad', 'Manifesto' and'One Law For Them', designed toappeal to what well-meaning sociolog-ists would refer to as 'disaffectedyouth'. Will go well in those alternativeoutlets where skinhead mores areimplicitly understood but probably notone for the mainstream chart.

THIRD WORLD: You've Got ThePower (CBS 85563) Prod: ThirdWorldDespite the presence of Stevie Won-der on two cuts, Third World is unlikelyto take the UK charts by storm with thisLP of hybrid reggae and funk. At theirbest Third World can bridge the twospheres - as demonstrated by themarvellous 'Now That We've FoundLove' of a couple of years ago - but byveering away from the roots of reggaethe six -man band has produced abland mixture instead of a triumphantnew breed of skank. That said 'Try JahLove (Jah Jah Love)' written by Won-der is a good song and things bubblealong engagingly. It could have beenbetter.

ANGELIC UPSTARTS: Still FromThe Heart (Zonophone ZONO 106)Prod: Steve LeveneSomething of a change of course forthe Upstarts whose yobbist stancemust have begun to bore even themafter all that time spent producingterrace rock. A change to morethoughtful material, albeit powerfullydelivered, is promising and while thethreatening 'Flames Of Brixton's is arabble rouser, 'Wasted (Loved ByNone)' is a nice piece of social com-ment. Whether the new image will clikcwith the fans is another matter, but atleast it's progress.

CHRON GEN: Chronic Generation(Secret SEC 3) Prod: Rick Cassman/Chron GenChron Gen have fans aplenty in crop -headed circles and like most bands oftheir genre they make a very loudnoise without ever testing anybody'sintellect. On the other hand, they makea good fist of 'Jet Boy Jet Girl' and their'Chronic Generation' anthem is abeefy rocker. This kind of skinheadthrash has a market that expands withthe length of the dole queues and withthe incentive of a free live EP pack-aged with this album, expect to find asteady stream of customers for it.

ALBUM REVIEWS (Continued from P.16)

FLYING SAUCERS: Flying Tonight(EMI EMC 3401) Prod: Sandy FordThe new album from Sandy Ford'sFlying Saucers shows them to havelost none of their skill at making goodmodern rock'n'roll. Even so it's unlikelyto sell even a tenth of the amount thatShakin' Stevens sells. The standouttracks on this exercise are versions of`Honey Hush' and 'Baby Blue' as wellas such originals as 'Let's Rock'. Whileit's true that the whole band play well, guitarist Dave Briggs is particularlyworthy of note, for his dazzling playing.

ROLY DANIELS: Last Cheater'sWaltz (Mint JULEP 26) Prod: GeorgeDohertyAn impressive, commanding balladvoice, Daniels here gets a pop andMOR sound to go with the countrymaterial that dominates this album -songs by such as Billy Sherrill, CurlyPuttnam and Johnny Paycheck. Agood crossover style of productionwith orchestral touches by Mint's ownGeorge Doherty in Belfast.

STRANGE FRUIT: Debut (PresidentPTLS 1073) Prod: Mike JarrattWith the current popularity of suchgroups as Shakatak and Level 42 nowis the right time to introduce a newlively jazz act. Strange Fruit don'texactly funk much but the musicmoves along at an acceptable pace foryoung people and there is no mistak-

ing the quality of the playing. GeoffCastle, a keyboards player, is thecentral force behind this loose line-upbut there are virtuoso performances onsaxophone and guitar to savour. Inquality the music is every bit as goodas Tom Scott & The LA Express, andPresident are to be congratulated forknowing a good thing when they see it.

WRABIT: Wrabit (MCA MCF 3126)Prod: Paul GrossA Canadian heavy rock six -piece witha more melodic approach than theBritish HM counterpart. The singer hasan archetypically high straining voiceand the band sounds as if it might begood live. Definite success possibili-ties if this unit can get the exposureover here.

RUPERT HINE: Waving Not Drown-ing (A&M AMLH 68541) Prod:Rupert Hine/Stephen W. TaylorA swift follow-up to the highly -regardedImmunity from Hine whose mastery ofelectronic music making is beyonddoubt. His lyricist Jeannette Obstoj isagain in charge of the words, and it isher lucid and tough-minded poetry thatmakes the album worth a secondglance this time, for the music seemsnot quite as stirring as the debut efforton initial plays. However, songs like`Sniper' and 'One Man's Poison' arescalpel -sharp and show a pair of rareintelligences at work.
