The Ascended Lord Jesus Is with Us Always in His Church on Earth

CHRIST IS RISEN! (He is risen indeed! ALLELUIA!)

This Easter greeting can sometimes make us feel like the events are over...BUT THERE’S

MORE...after He rose from the dead, the Lord Jesus presented Himself alive to the apostles,

“appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3).

When He ascended to the right hand of the Father, He did not orphan His Church, but He fills

all things in heaven and on earth and gives gifts to His disciples. Even now, through His

Church, He continues “to do and teach” (Acts 1:1), preaching “repentance for the forgiveness

of sins” (Luke 24:47) even “to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Though the cloud hid Jesus

from the sight of His disciples then, and He remains hidden from sight even now, He remains

with His people through His Gospel and Sacraments. He comes to us by the Word of His apos-

tles, by the promise of His Father and by the power of the Holy Spirit, whom He pours out up-

on “the church, which is his body” (Eph. 1:22–23). In this holy Christian Church, we bless

God and worship Christ with joy, for in His Church He blesses us with forgiveness, lifts us up

in His hands and seats us with Himself “in the heavenly places” (Eph. 1:20).

The school is delighted to have

three new teachers next year.

Heidi Gottschalk has accepted

the church’s call to serve as a Middle School teach-

er (math) and Clarence Geter has signed his letter

of agreement to serve as a half-time middle school

teacher for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade science. Heidi

will graduate from Concordia, Chicago (River For-

rest) on May 6th and will be getting married this

summer. Her and her husband will relocate here in

mid-July. Clarence Geter has taught 10 years at

Immanuel Lutheran School and served as their

coach for various sports. The third teacher is our

Middle School Spanish teacher, Tammy Gomez.

Tammy has taught Spanish here at our school in

an after-school program the past two years. We will

have Spanish as an in-school on-school time pro-

gram for two hours two days a week for our Middle

School students.

Johnny Appleseed Spring Program-On May 24th

at 11 am and 7 pm we will have our Spring pro-

gram. Children in grades K-5 will sing, the middle

school students will help with props, costumes, and

ushering. And 19 students will have speaking parts:

Mason Collins will be Grandpa, Delaney Collins will

be Emily, Abby Afeworki will be Wendy, Rachel

Chanesman will be Sarah, Ruhamah Jima will be

Miss Mcintosh, Hadley Marston will be Johnny Ap-

pleseed, Jayson Stocker will be Pa, Maddie Durkin

will be Hester, Rhyan Adams will be Granny,

James Shepard will be Settler 1, Marshal Maguire

will be Settler 2, C. J. Moore will be Settler 3 and

Children will be played by: Evelyn Huber, Eferem

Mehari, Anabel Tesfaye, Amelie Heyer Pozos,

Gabby Day, Charlotte Hannis, and Ephod Jima.

either performance.

Our Church and School have organized an Ameri-

can Heritage Girls Troop serving girls from Kin-

dergarten through age 18. The Troop has two age

groups. The younger girls are called Tenderhearts

and meet immediately after school on Friday after-

noon from 3:10-4:10 pm. The older girls (grades 4-

high school) are Explorers and will meet at the

same time for the rest of this school year.

All girls in the church are invited to attend a meet-

ing to see if they would like to join.

Our Middle School students are planning exciting

field trips May 3-5. The 6th grade will be going to

Science Camp in Pennsylvania, the 7th grade will

be going on a service trip to Washington, DC, and

the 8th grade will be going to New York City. These

field trips will be memories that last a lifetime!

Thank you to those in the congregation who have

helped make these trips possible.

This past month we have had three guest Pastors

lead our chapel service: John Durkin from Prince of

Peace Lutheran Church, Maddie and Mike Durkin’s

father; Pastor Joyce, Camille and Mason Huber's

Pastor; Deaconess Sally Hiller from the LCMS

Southeastern District office. Their messages have

been inspirational and deeply appreciated. Josh

Klug led our chapel service on Holy Week. We

have chapel each morning with an emphasis on

different days or occurrences during Holy Week.

Each leader did an outstanding job of bringing the

message of Jesus and his salvation for each of us

to our students.

Our Band and Keyboard students will participate in

a Music Festival held in Maryland on May 2nd. Par-

ents have arranged to transport them to the festival

for the day. This is the first time our younger grades

(keyboard players) have been able to participate in

this festival. It will be a great musical day!

The May Lighthouse Meeting will be blessed by

the presence of our speaker Minoli Haththotuwa

who has been in ministry since 1996. She has

lived in Asia, Africa and Europe and is now

based in Arlington, Virginia. Please try to attend

and bring a friend or family member. The meet-

ing begins at 9:30 am in the Seminar Room and

ends at 11:30 am. Come and be blessed by this

LSS Expressions of Abun-dance Breakfast

Join Lutheran Social Services on our Bold Journey to serve the “least

of these” in the National Capital area (foster care children, refugees, HIV AIDs families) by attending our annual Expressions of Abundance Breakfast. This year’s fundrais-ing event will take place on Wednesday, May 10, in Silver Spring MD at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Registration and continental breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m., fol-lowed by an inspirational program from 8:00 – 9:00. Carpools can be arranged, so don’t let the location keep you from attending! The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive will be on Saturday, May 13.

Each year, the National Association of Letter Carriers dedicates the 2nd Saturday of every May to serving communities nationwide by collecting food to be delivered to local hunger organizations. In Arlington County, all food collected by letter carriers will come here to AFAC! Just leave your nonperish-able donations by your doorstep around 9am and your local letter carrier will collect your items. Be on the lookout for road signs and more information in the coming weeks.

“Shredding for Scholars”-

The Woman’s Club of Arlington will hold it’s an-

nual “shred” day on Sat. May 13th from 10 am to

12 pm at our clubhouse parking lot at 700 S. Bu-

chanan St. Arl, VA 22204. Come early at

9:00 am for the yard sale, Lions Club Sight &

Hearing Testing Van, and Bake Sale. We are

supporting DC Diaper Bank also this year. Go to

www.dcdiaperbank.org for more information. Do-

nations of baby diapers, adult diapers, and any-

thing related to raising a baby such as food, for-

mula, bibs, bottles, teethers, creams, shampoo,

for babies and items for new mothers will be ac-

cepted and brought to our parking lot on May

13th. Distribution of supplies will go to 33 vari-

ous charities in DC, MD and VA as items are

needed. Donations for shredding, bake sale, &

yard sale will go to our scholarship fund support-

ing a Wakefield H.S. woman attending a 4-year

college in Virginia. Lions Club is collecting used

FREE CONCERT: SCHLESINGER CONCERT HALL

at 7:30 p.m. The United States Navy Band has extended an invitation to our church and congregation for a free concert at Schlesinger Concert Hall on May 4, 2017 at 7:30pm, where they will be honoring veterans.

Our concert will feature the winner of our Young Artist Competition flutist, Irene Kim, performing Poem by Charles Griffes plus a wide variety of wind ensemble pieces including Academic Festival Overture by Brahms, Symphony in Bb by Hindemith, and more. 500th Anniversary of the Reformation and

75th Anniversary of OSLC

Thank Offering

At the Town Hall meeting, held on February 19, 2017, the LLG presented the results of the congrega-tion-wide survey, regarding the yearlong thank offering in recognition of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, and the 75th Anniversary of OSLC. There were 67 re-sponses to the survey which asked the Congregation to select which areas that they wanted to focus on contrib-uting to, beyond their regular offering. They were pre-sented with three categories: church, school and exter-nal. Within each category were several choices as well as an option for write in.

The funds that the congregation selected to receive the thank offerings were: debt retirement for the church, technology upgrades for the school and Lutheran Social Services for the external organization. The goal is to raise $75,000 in recognition of the 75th anniversary of OSLC which was recognized last year, and the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Funds received will be divided equally between the three areas.

If you would like to make a Thank Offering do-nation, you may include the donation with your Sunday offering by designating, “Anniversary Thank Offering” on the special offering memo line of your offering envelope. The LLG will be reporting progress towards the goal to the congregation throughout the year.
