Sit-To-Stand Challenge July 6—August 28
Pledge to improve your strength, mobility and independence – join the Sit-to-Stand Challenge! The Sit-to-Stand exercise is one of the most highly effective movements recommended for seniors, yet very simple. How can one exercise reap so many benefits? For starters, it’s a good indicator of independence and fall risk. The sit-to-stand is a complex, multi-joint exercise, requiring major muscle groups to work together for an efficient movement. This exercise strengthens your core, legs and glutes, your body’s powerhouse musculature, and requires adequate flexibility of the low back, hips and ankles. Learn more about the importance of this exercise at the Sit-to-Stand presentation, broadcast July 1 – July 5 at 12:10 pm and 4:10 pm.
Why should I pledge to take the Sit-to-Stand challenge? During the time of COVID-19, most of us have been sitting more and moving less. When restrictions are lifted, jumping back into our normal day-to-day will not be simple. Preparation will be required to reverse the strength and mobility regressions most of us will experience from the lack of activity over a long period of time.
Who can participate? The Sit to Stand Challenge is for everyone! There are 4 workout tracks to accommodate different starting points, from those who are unable to stand up from a chair to those who have no issues standing up at all.
How do I know which track is right for me? July 6 – 10 is test-in week, meaning that participants will complete a 30-second Sit-to-Stand assessment in their homes (self-test). MAC Staff will broadcast sessions on Channel 91 (9:00 am and 2:00 pm) to provide instruction on the assessment, including the 30 second timer. Participants can also complete the self-test on their own time, without tuning into Channel 91.
What do I get when I join? Par ticipants receive workouts specific to their star ting point, based on their self-test results. Each two-week session will provide a new set of exercises. These exercises will take 10 minutes or less to complete each day. Need Accountability? Tune into Channel 91 every day at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to complete your daily dose of Sit-to-Stands with staff! All participants who complete the challenge, including the test-out, will receive a small prize!
How do I get started? Registration cards will be placed in your box dur ing the last week of June. Use this card to Pledge your Commitment and return it to the MAC.
