As part of our continuing series

of adventures, we added two more trips to our exploration of Grand County. In August, we journeyed up the Colorado River to Red Cliff’s Lodge. We enjoyed a great lunch at the Cowboy Grill while watching the river roll amidst such spectacular scenery. After lunch, we spent some time exploring the lodge, which has a winery and a movie museum, highlighting the movies made here in the Moab area and at the lodge. We had fun looking at the pictures in the museum to see some of our loved ones or friends who have been extras or doubles for the stars.

September had us taking a step back in time as we visited

some of the earliest inhabitants of our valley: prehistoric giants. A new Moab museum focused on the dinosaur tracks found in that area, called Moab Giants, just opened its gates. The giants are life-size replicas of the dinosaurs, and as you journey on the path, you can see the tracks, read about the dinosaurs, and see them in what would have been their natural setting. It was a great afternoon, and we ended it with lunch here at the Grand Center provided by Active Re-Entry.

We plan to wind up our Year of Exploring with a lunch at Susie’s Branding Iron while listening to some of the old time ranchers from the area.

This holiday season, you might be looking forward to the feasts of food and delicious

treats waiting at every holiday party and family get-together. After all, food is one of the main joys of spending time with the people you care about. But have you wondered how you might enjoy the season while still being conscious of your health? Here are some quick tips to remember this year so that you can have your pie and eat it too:

• At the food table, start by loading your plate with simple foods like veggies, fruits, grilled or roasted meats, and shrimp. These will begin to fill you up before you want to overindulge in the desserts.

• Eat a nutritious snack before the party so you won’t be as hungry and tempted to eat everything within reach.

• Allow some time to pass before getting another helping. After about 10 minutes, your first helping will begin to digest and you will realize you are full and satisfied sooner.

• Choose your favorite thing, and savor each and every bite. This will allow you to eat more slowly and also allow you to focus on one thing at a time, rather than a large portion of many things.

• Keep being active! Maintaining exercise throughout the holidays—and especially on those party days—is the best way to give yourself more freedom to enjoy the delicious treats.

We should all be able to fully enjoy the holiday season without sacrificing delicious holiday goodies, and with a quick checklist, we can. Health is something to celebrate year-round, but now we are ready to practice health for the holidays!

2016 P.A.W.S. Calendar is ready! Have you purchased yours yet?

Each year, Active Re-Entry releases our annual charity calendar focused on the P.A.W.S.

(People and Animals Working to Serve) program which is run entirely by volunteers who give their time, energy and love to bring joy and comfort to others.

P.A.W.S. is possible because of the volunteers and able to operate because of donations, fundraisers and grants.

The cost for this year’s calendar is just $12 and all proceeds will go directly to the program.

We’re Rolling Out Our Brand New Website!

It’s been a long time coming and Active Re-Entry is thrilled to announce our newly-

designed website! The site is scheduled to go live in December 2015 with a brand new look and feel, as well as lots of information about our programs and resources. Stay tuned and be sure to check it out at the following link next month: www.arecil.org

Our Uintah Basin Support Group has recently increased the

number of community integration activities and trainings they are offering. We now meet once a week, which gives us additional opportunities to learn about community resources as well as independent living skills. Our most recent activity took us to the Daughters Of Utah Pioneers (DUP) museum. The DUP is an organization that was created solely for historical, educational, and public purposes. They are dedicated to honoring the

names and achievements of the men, women, and children who founded Utah.

Last week we met at our local DUP museum for a private tour from Support Group member, Dahn Caldwell (pictured left). We were privileged to spend two amazing hours immersed in the history of Vernal. We were also lucky enough to have both Irene Mumford and Amy Johnstun who added their own personal accounts and stories of how they used the many fascinating items on display.
