Inside Clear Channel/CMT With Clear Channel and CMT’s recent partnership, Cody Alan is about to get a lot busier and the two companies are about to get a lot cozier. Here’s a look at Alan’s new sandbox and the

P A G E T H R E E P I C As the seconds ticked down Saturday night to the third annual event’s close and record-breaking $200,000 total, a surprising turn found KAJA/San Antonio swooping in to claim honors as the top fundraising radio station (No. 7 team overall). Country

Aircheck asked PD Travis Moon to explain his station’s late surge to total more than $6,000 – a number that has since swelled in excess of $6,500. “We attacked it like a radiothon trying to tap into urgency as the month ended,” Moon says. “While we promoted this all month, we planned and began an intense final push campaign the day before Thanksgiving. We tinkered with the message to find the right impact.”

The station ran hourly promos directing listeners to its Facebook, where the donation page link was pinned at the top. “I made sure to keep that post up in the newsfeed by updating and reposting it every five hours,” he says. “I felt we could use the power of our 194,000 Facebook fans and big reach there to add impact as the month ended.” Tickets to KJ’s upcoming “Class Of” show were offered to anyone who donated to the effort. “We will be raising even more money at this free show on Dec. 10 by raffling off guitars, signing up Partners in Hope, and selling Silver Seating tickets with all the money going to St. Jude.” Chase Rice, Charlie Worsham, Cole Swindell, Kacey Musgraves, Brett Eldredge and Tyler Farr will perform, and Moon expects a crowd exceeding 6,000. Artist News Capitol’s Keith Urban will join Drake, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Robin Thicke at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the Grammy Nominations Concert Live Dec. 6 on CBS-TV. The one-hour special, hosted by LL Cool J, will also feature a performance by Taylor Swift from Sydney, Australia. Republic Nashville’s Florida Georgia Line has been added to the lineup for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2014 to air Dec. 31 on ABC-TV. The duo will join Jason Derulo, Fall Out Boy, Jennifer Hudson, Enrique Iglesias and Robin Thicke to perform at the West Coast party hosted by Fergie. Albums from Ashley Monroe, Kacey Musgraves and Keith Urban are the only Country selections in the just-released Rolling Stone list of the 50 Best Albums of 2013. The highest Country ranker is Monroe’s Like A Rose at No. 18. Writes RS, “When Monroe suggests ganja and whips and chains to her man on ‘Weed Instead of Roses,’ it’s clear this isn’t your grandma’s country music.” Musgraves’ Same Trailer Different Park comes in at No. 28. “She’s ballsy, traditional and pop. Call her the millennials’ Loretta Lynn,” the mag says. Ranking Urban’s Fuse at No. 39, Rolling Stone mused, “Only Taylor Swift has done so well synergizing dance-pop drive and countrypolitan pump.” Topping the list is Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City. Paige Logan and Heather Herren-Looney of Rhymetown/GrassRoots’ North 40 put an industry spin on the artist interview:I grew up listening to KEEL/Shreveport, LA. My brother would prank call that station over and over and over. In elementary school, I actually ended up winning two prizes from calling in – a

Saturday Night Live album and a Close Encounters Of The Third Kind promo pack. –HeatherFirst time we heard ourselves on the radio was on KKBI/Broken Bow, OK. We were driving through and just cranked it up, so stunned and elated. We kept thinking of Paige’s husband, who is also our engineer, and how he made us sound so good. –HeatherWe’ll never forget the time we showed up an hour early to a station visit. We ended up making coffee for everyone as they arrived! –PaigeOur most interesting road companion was my grandmother, Mary Nell Crowder. She’s a feisty 96-year-old we picked up in Louisiana on our way home to Tennessee. We considered it an honor to be driving such precious cargo for a truly thankful Thanksgiving. –HeatherWe always travel with our magic potion, peppermint essential oil. We also keep Crocs with us to rest them dawgs after a long day, lip gloss, guitar, phones, and an iPad to keep business going. I’m a vegan so a cooler full of veggies, tortillas and hummus are the fail-safe snack items that can get me through anything. –Paige When there’s downtime I use Urbanspoon to find the best Vegan restaurants. –PaigeIf I saw Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton in an airport I would have to buy them a drink! I am so proud for what they’ve accomplished together in business and in marriage. I’ve juggled and worked with my husband for 23 years and understand how hard yet rewarding it is! –HeatherThe most redneck thing we’ve done recently was buy a bottle of wine at Walmart. Last night.

individually or anybody else could dream of and potentially make happen.” If you’re looking for specifics on what mutual events and cross-promotion might look like, you’ll have to wait, says Phillips. “We’re not putting our playbook out there,” he says. “What people should take away from this is that we’re like-minded strategically in how we approach music and music events. We share show business sensibilities that things should be big and make a lot of noise and reach across a lot of different platforms.” Leimgruber does have some ideas about how the partnership might look from the outside. “We will want to support and promote the key events and programming activity on CMT,” she says. “Whether that’s the CMT Awards or the Crossroads specials they do, those are of interest to our radio listeners so it’s a really nice synergistic thing. It deepens the commitment to our listeners and enhances the way we promote those things that are going on in CMT’s world. Similarly, CMT allows iHeartRadio programming and events, and individual stations with the programming we’re producing together to be exposed on the CMT television platforms. It gives CMT radio exposure, it gives us television exposure and it’s all [focused on] the goal of super-serving country fans.” The cornerstone of the partnership is Alan, who will helm the newly branded CMT After Midnite With Cody Alan starting in January. With the continuation of the 7pm-midnight CMT Radio Live With Cody Alan, hosting duties on CMT Hot 20 Countdown and a new one-hour weekend program revealed as part of the

Cox’s KWEN/Tulsa PD Matt Bradley discusses his most influential artists, concerts, songs and albums:1. Village People/In The Navy: My parents say it’s the first song I ran around the house singing.2. Van Halen/Runnin’ With The Devil: My older brother left his Van Halen cassette in my room one day. I played it, loved it and kept it. Still one of my favorites.3. Waylon Jennings/Ramblin’ Man:

My dad somehow got his hands on a very large record collection from an oldies radio station that flipped formats. I played that 45 over and over again.4. Buddy Holly/Oh Boy: My dad has always been an oldies guy. Elvis still lives in his house. Mom is a rocker who was into Hendrix and all sorts of psychedelic stuff. When on road trips, we somehow all agreed on Buddy Holly.5. Elvis Presley/Way Down: I just turned 38 but I can look you in the eye and tell you I met Elvis Presley. I was a year and a half old and have no memory of it but my parents were in the right place at the right time. When arriving in Tulsa, Elvis pulled up next to my stroller in his limo, cracked the window, pointed at me and then drove on. Elvis has been on high rotation since I was born and still is!•A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: That’s a hard one as I try to hit them all. I’ve never listened to Nirvana’s Nevermind. The album cover always creeped me out. •An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Anything from U2, The Joshua Tree. I like the band okay but I just don’t get the mass appeal.•An album you played or listened to incessantly: Van Halen, 1984. Someone needs to get Eddie and Eric Church together just once!•One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Johnny Cash, “Rusty Cage.” That guitar is mean and Johnny is in the zone on that song. Turn it up and it will change your mood!•One item in your music collection you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Oh boy. I know all the words to New Kids On The Block “Hangin’ Tough.”

C H E C K O U Tnew agreement, you might wonder how Alan will get it all done. “Sleep is overrated,” Alan laughs. “I have boundless energy. I love going to work. There’s an old saying that if you love what you do, it isn’t work, and that’s definitely how I’m approaching this. And I have a really great team around me, which helps a lot. We’re in the process of bringing on another producer for After Midnite. I’m surrounded by great people and we’re doing to be able to do so much with both shows.” With both nights and overnights covered, the possibility exists for stations to have Alan on-air for 11 hours straight. But Alan is up for the challenge and he says the shows will be very different. “Our goal is to give each its own personality, so they’ll have a different sound, a different vibe,” he says. “The imaging and content will be different for each, and we’ll be adding some new and unique features to After Midnite.” Some of the content will be shared out of necessity. “It would be pretty difficult to get artists in for interviews at 3am,” he says. “So a lot of those interviews will be from what I’ve gathered for CMT Radio Live. But After Midnite will be a good mix of live and pre-recorded content.” Leimgruber says having the two shows back-to-back is an exciting opportunity for stations. “It’s 11 hours of great content, that’s how I look at it,” she says. “Cody really understands and embraces the different audiences we’re talking to with each daypart. I don’t see any reason why a station wouldn’t be excited to have an incredible host providing the right kind of product at the right time for that many hours.” In terms of the future, Alan has an eye on a much larger fan base. “With the reach of Clear Channel, iHeartRadio and CMT combined, there isn’t a country music event that we’re not going to be a part of,” he says. “It’s really exciting what we’ll be able to do with the number of fans we’ll be able to reach.” And there’s more to come. “We will be creating more original content together, whether they’re TV projects on CMT, radio and digital projects with Clear Channel and iHeartRadio, or any of the above via new distribution outlets, “ Leimgruber says. Phillips adds, “We have the power between the two entities to achieve some things that country fans haven’t seen before.” –Jess Wright
