Easter Sunday Morning
Sunday, March 27th
Let us come together and worship, celebrating God's
power together! This is also a great time for you to get
involved in helping others to experience the saving
power of God. Invite your friends, neighbors, co-workers,
and anyone else who doesn't have a church home to come
with you and hear the Good News, maybe for the first
time!
Why do we call it Good Friday?
It is not altogether clear when people started calling the Friday before Easter “Good Friday.” It is known in some
other circles as “Holy (and therefore good) Friday or "Great Friday." And the German word would literally be
translated into “Sorrowful” or “Mournful” Friday. The Baltimore Catechism states that it is good because God
“showed His great love for man, and purchased for him every blessing.”
Personally, this is my favorite service of the year. It reminds me that I still need a Savior and the great lengths and
personal sacrifice that God endured to be the only Savior that can actually save me. The only one who can redeem
us. Each week we gather around the Lord’s Table to remember what He has done for us, but at our Good Friday
service it seems more real, more poignant. What this reveals about me is how easily I forget, even working to
remember daily to myself and weekly with my church family. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
I want to urge you to make our Good Friday service a part of your Easter weekend with your family and church
family. Come and remember as we focus on this one aspect of the passion week. It’s not a celebration, per se. It’s a
vivid remembrance, not just with our minds, but with our whole selves. We will invite you to come up in groups to
participate in the Lord’s supper, whether that’s with your family or with some friends. We will recount the events of
Jesus death. In doing so, it always makes the celebration of the resurrection all the more joyful.
Our Good Friday service will begin at 6:30 in the evening on the 25th and usually lasts a little less than an hour. We
hope to see you there.
Humbly, Dave

Virtues of a Serving Family
Have you ever admired what makes people who enthusiastically serve others good at it? How do they find the time
or energy?
After witnessing the countless volunteers who make FCC Basketball successful and the many people serving at
FCC, I have come to realize that these people really get what it means to serve. They love in ways that are selfless
and give in ways that are sacrificial. Parents navigate through the sanity while juggling sports, errands, activities,
school, homework, work, relationships, hobbies, and church. Meanwhile, they are great examples of what it means
to serve.
But how do they do it? How are they jumping in when help is needed and saying yes when nobody else does?
It seems that these families understand their spiritual gifts. Everyone is created in the image of God, so they are
automatically supernaturally gifted. But it takes a lifestyle that humbly accepts imperfection while also accepting
responsibility to love others consistently. It is a giving way of life that involves the interaction of a few things:
Humility, Grit, and Generosity.
Amazing things happen when these three things are integrated into a family. Children and parents become uniquely
aware of their abilities and gifts to do “immeasurably more” just by being themselves. And these three virtues do not
always automatically just happen. They need to be taught, encouraged, and learned.
Humility
Humility is the understanding that one is not perfect and not entitled to everything. It takes humility for people to
show deep care for others. Parents can guide their children in little tasks that require extra help to start teaching
humility. For example, begin by letting them help with washing dishes, taking the trash out, taking a neighbor’s
newspaper to them, or even preparing communion at church.
Grit
Grit is understanding that the task is bigger than their own life and committing to it. It is serving without regret and
inviting others to join. Grit is when parents, despite their chaotic lives and schedules, find ways to show up for people
together as a family. Encourage each other not to give up even when they feel like quitting before the job is done.
Generosity
Generosity is living with an abundant heart of trust instead of living in fear of scarcity. Generosity is shown when a
person begins to believe everything they possess was meant to be shared and given joyfully. Help children learn
generosity by providing opportunities to give. When kids experience the joy of giving then they will want to be more
generous.
These virtues are a challenge for all families and individuals. Feel free to visit the Faith@Home event this month if
you would like to learn more about getting your family involved in serving.

IMDB IT
Superhero movies have been killing it the last several years at the box office and with the recent release of Star
Wars: The Force Awakens, and the record breaking numbers, it seems like fantasy movies are still number one in
our hearts. But while most of these movies are pretty student friendly (if you can get past the punching), not all of
these movies should be seen by your young ones. While movies like Captain America and The Avengers are great
movies to take your son to see, you should be aware of what these movies contain before you fork over $300 for
popcorn and 2/3 of a soda.
MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE MOVIE OUT ONLINE!
There are tons of websites online that tell you the kind of content in the movies you want to see, such as:
www.IMDB.com - Internet Movie Database has all kinds of information on the current movies and movies that will
be out soon.
www.kids-in-mind.com - Shows the latest movies on its home screen and gives the movie a rating in the areas of
Sex & Nudity, Violence & Gore, and Profanity.
www.commonsensemedia.org - This website does movie and TV reviews, as well as shows tons of other great
resources for your family.
www.pluggedin.com - This is a Christian based website that reviews movies and other media to make sure that you
aren't taking your kids to a movie that could scar them forever.
If you still question whether or not you should take your student to see a movie after reading reviews online, go
screen the movie for yourself first, that will be the best way to figure out if your student should see it or not.
Protect your kids as well. Ask your teenagers what movie they are going to see and if it is inappropriate don't let
them see it, you have that power.
This takes me back to superhero movies. If your kid tells you they want to go see Deadpool, tell them no!
Please read the reviews online before seeing any movie with your child, don't put both you and them in an awkward
position.

Students, mark your calendars!
The second Wednesday of this past month was Ash Wednesday, and while I was working at the hospital one of the
chaplains came around our unit and offered ashes to the employees and patients. I accepted the mark on my
forehead and not shortly after had a coworker exclaim they didn’t know I was Catholic! I explained that I grew up
in the Methodist church and we too observed Ash Wednesday, that it is not just a Catholic ritual, and went on. But
as the day progressed I became more and more aware of the mark on my forehead, especially when people looked at
it when they were talking to me. To be completely honest, whether I should be ashamed or not, it made me feel
self-conscious.
Ironically, when people ask me if I’m a Christian I rarely hesitate to reply that, yes, I am follower of Christ. I look
forward to the opportunities to preach God’s Word behind the pulpit and declare his truth. From time to time I post
things on Facebook that reflect my Christian thoughts and beliefs. But this felt different, walking around with the
marking of the cross on my forehead, surrounded by coworkers who had nothing on theirs. I felt like an alien in a
strange land, like someone set apart who was being judged by those who failed to understand the reality and truth of
the Christian faith.
Here am I, in a royal priesthood, one of God’s chosen people who are living as strangers in a very broken and sinful
world. Here am I living it out, wondering if the rest of my actions stand in contradiction or congruence with my
apparent statement of faith. Here am I being taught a lesson by God that times will come when, ready or not, the
world is going to see me as either a follower of Jesus or a denouncer of the faith.

Easter Love Offering
Every Easter Sunday, First Christian Church takes up an Easter Love Offering (or as some call it, a 30 Pieces of
Silver Offering). It is an offering to the Lord, above and beyond our normal tithe that simply says “Thank you,
Jesus.” The fruit of this offering goes to various missionaries and projects. This year’s Easter Love Offering will be
divided equally between Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch, Colegio Biblico, and Neelam’s Kids (India).
Shiloh Children’s Ranch
Located in Shelbina, MO, Shiloh provides a safe Christian environment for abused, neglected, and troubled children.
Like its name suggests, Shiloh is a fully functioning ranch. The farm setting enables the kids to develop a good work
ethic, life skills, and life lessons. The cattle and produce raised on the farm help sustain the mission. Currently, the
ministry of Shiloh includes a total of six homes for children, two relief homes, plus an onsite school.
Colegio Biblico
Located on the Mexican border, in Eagle Pass, Texas, Colegio Biblico (Spanish for Bible College) is a Spanish-
speaking ministry college that prepares preachers, teachers, and lay leaders from Mexico, the rest of Latin America,
and the United States for Christian ministry in the Spanish-speaking world.
Neelam’s Kids
Neelam’s Kids is ministry of Mid-India Church Partners in Domoh, India. It is led by Neelam Lall (wife of Vivert
Lall). The ministry cares for persecuted children of Christian families.. The ministry provides a dormitory,
educational and recreational spaces, cafeteria, and an outdoor worship facility. It offers a safe and loving environ-
ment as well as a Christian education for the children who have experienced hatred and witnessed unmentionable
acts of violence against their family.

First Christian Church 1200 West Boone Street Salem, Illinois 62881 Return Service Requested
When most Christian adults think about Easter, they are reminded of the miraculous
resurrection of Jesus Christ. Most church worship services honor this glorious act on
Easter Sunday. On the other hand, like most children, our eyes glaze over and our
minds roam with thoughts of lots of chocolate, Peeps, and egg hunts.
It is imperative to know the significance of Easter so we are able to tell others what Easter is about and why it is
important.
It’s important because it proved that Jesus was who he claimed to be – He is God in the flesh. Two thousand
years ago, in the Middle East, an event occurred that permanently changed the world – Jesus came to save us.
Because of that event, history was split. Every time you write a date, you’re using Jesus Christ as the focal point.
Yet, that event means nothing without the resurrection – Jesus’ birth, his life and death merely become a good
story and Easter becomes a memorial to a nice, good religious teacher who lived 2,000 years ago. Easter – the
resurrection of Jesus Christ is essential.
My hope is that you will join us each Sunday leading up to Easter. We will talk about what the events leading up
to Easter mean to us. I also hope that you will invite others to join us.
