The
Dancer's
Extension A Special Thanks…
Sonya, Henry and Clara Monts would like to thank the Saluda Welcome Table and everyone who either joined
us for the pizza dinner, or donated, or both. Well over
$2000 was raised in Thomas' memory to go directly to The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) in Bar Harbor, Maine, specifically for cancer research. Thomas died in
October 2016 from lung cancer. The connection to The Jackson Laboratory is that Thomas' wife,
Sonya, was a Summer Student at
JAX in 1993. Thomas and Sonya have continued to support The Jackson Laboratory throughout the years for the amazing research they accomplish in fighting numerous diseases, including cancer. Thomas always
prayed that one day scientists will find the cure for cancer so that others would not have to endure the pain and devastation of this disease. The Jackson Laboratory
is a National Cancer Institute-
designated Cancer Center. The hope for the cure for cancer begins at JAX. We thank you for your support, your prayers, your donations, and your hope for a cure.

"Man Gave Names to all the Animals," an exhibit and sale of
twenty six animal sculptures will run August 5 through 31 at The Pottery in historic downtown
Saluda. From Aardvark to Zoorila, the exhibit showcases a host of wild animals and the sometimes unusual names man gave them. Since the dawn of time man has
exercised his dominance over the beasts, giving each their own purpose that suited him, resulting
in a myriad of relationships with animals. Some were chosen to be companions, some to be a hat or coat and some for dinner.
Each piece in the exhibit requires the animal's lot in life to be a planter. In consideration of our

Jim Carson, AIS
Saluda artist had his painting, “The Cottage Next to the Playhouse”, accepted to the American Impressionist Society 18th Annual National Juried Exhibition, held at Montgomery-Lee Fine Art, in Park City, Utah, Sept. 28- Oct 29.
1.430 paintings were submitted to the AIS show and 175 were
accepted. Jim was awarded AIS Signature Membership in 2015.
The American Impressionist Society defines American Impressionism as the concern for light on form, color, and brushstroke. It allows equal latitude between these attributes, and recognizes not a single
definitive element, but several factors, including high key light and hue, visual breakdown of
detail, concern for contemporary life, and cultivation of direct and spontaneous approaches to a subject.
Jim’s August Saluda workshop is full. His next workshop is titled
“Plein Air/Painting the Fall from Life ”, Oct. 19-21.

Saluda Train Tales
Va How “The Southern” Served the South
August 18, 2017 Bo Brown from Spartanburg, SC will look at the history of railroad
Dining Cars followed by a brief history of
Southern Railway at Saluda Train Tales at the Saluda Historic Depot. This will be followed by an in depth look at the history of Southern Railway Dining Car
Service which will explore all aspects of service including, china
patterns, silver hollowware, silver flatware, linens, menus, all things used in the dining car during their
84 years of Southern Railway
passenger car service. Almost as long as he can remember, Bo Brown has been a railroad collector. This actually began at the age of 12 at his Grandfather’s house in
Spartanburg, SC. Bo’s grandfather worked for Southern Railway as “Storekeeper” at the Hayne Car Shop, and that’s where he spent almost every summer
vacation.
As he grew older, that passion only increased and now at 58 years old the love of railroad collecting has not diminished but has only grown. His collection started with a silver thermos, a
lantern and a long neck oiler that his Grandfather gave him while they were cleaning out the “little” garage outback their home.
As far as railroad
antiques go, he loves bells, whistles, lanterns, locks, china, silver,
lamps, dining car tables and chairs, hats, badges, heavy signs, ticket cabinets, motorcars… you get the idea, he loves it all. You will see some of this collection at Saluda Train Tales on August 18,
2017.
Bo’s day job (and sometimes day and night) is a funeral director and embalmer. Along with his wife, Brynda, they own The Howze Mortuary in Travelers Rest, SC. Thankfully, she
understands Bo’s passion for collecting and encourages him along. The bug has bitten her, too, and she collects Atlantic Coast Line “Flora of the South”
china and railroad uniform
buttons. To date she has right at 600 sets. Bo hopes to someday open a Southern Railway Museum so that

his collection can stay together for others to enjoy.

This issue of Saluda
Lifestyles is dedicated to
the memory of Charlie Ward. July 1, 1920-
August 1, 2008
The Charlie Ward Memorial Pig Out will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the
Pavilion at McCreery Park in downtown Saluda. To honor Charlie, once again, the
free meal of barbecue, beans, slaw, drinks, and desserts will be served to the sound of Mountain
Roots Band with Jeff Hayes who, by the way, will perform on the Ella Grace Mintz Stage at the Top of The Grade park. Be sure to
bring a chair to sit in the park and enjoy the music after eating your barbecue. Generous donations in the past have allowed everyone to be invited to the Pig Out at no charge. Your help is still needed! If you would like to contribute, please make your check payable to Saluda Pig Out and take it to
Entegra Bank at 108 Main Street in Saluda or to Judy Ward at Thompson's Store, or mail it to Saluda Pig Out, P. O. Box 265, Saluda NC 28773. You may also
make a donation as you enjoy
your meal at the Pig Out! Your support is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to another great Pig Out on September 12! Pets are not allowed in the Pavilion area. This is a rain or
shine event! Don't forget to bring a dessert.
Charlie Ward, the "Man of
Saluda" August 1, 2008 we lost the "Man
of Saluda", Charlie Ward. He did not get to say good bye but he said hello to All. He never met a stranger and he welcomed
everyone to Saluda. Many have said they decided to come to Saluda after they first met him, and they knew this was the place
for them. This is why many of our hearts and lives are a part of
Saluda, and we are so blessed to have known him and are now living in this great community.
At the Charlie Ward's Memorial Pig Out September 9, we invite you to come and share your memories of Charlie and tell stories so that new citizens to
Saluda will know more about this special person that they missed
meeting. We are still collecting stories about Charlie to someday publish a book about the "Man we Love." Stories can be dropped off at Thompson’s Store. --Judy Ward

The Saluda Center Book Club will meet on Thurs., Aug. 3 at 2pm to discuss, The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Hope to see
you there. For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope
in the most desperate of times—
the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.
It was an unlikely quest from the
start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard
workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams
of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the
German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or

prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for
himself in the world. Drawing on
the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.

Hobo Quilt Saluda volunteers
quilted a
Hobo Quilt in dedication to the "hobos" who lived along and traversed the nation's railroads in trying times
in America. This group presented the quilt to the board of the Saluda Historic Depot to be displayed along with other railroad artifacts and historical
displays. Along with the quilt, the
following declaration will be exhibited. "From the 1880s to the 1940s, hobos were a part of American life, with up to 250,000 travelers on the road at one time. Some
viewed the hobos as dirty, hard-drinking, untrustworthy bums. Most saw them as honest, honorable people caught in extraordinary times. All would
agree, however, that the railroads crisscrossing this country were
the lifeblood of every hobo. Hobo signs were their secret language: They gave direction and advice to the savvy traveler including where to find food, water, a place to sleep and possibly work. Based
on these signs, hobos could tell how they would be received by a home owner, the police, a community or even a dog. The meanings of hobo signs reflect all sides of the transient life, from
the honorable to the unsavory.
These signs also tell the story of what it took to survive as a hobo. Most importantly, this subculture was a significant part of American history that is worthy of remembrance." Taken from Debra Henninger: HOBO QUILTS 55+
Original Blocks Based on the Secret Language of Riding the Rails.
Each square has a symbol of a
sign that was used by the hobos
as a "secret language" to warn or alert hobos like "Cops Active," "Anything Goes," "Danger," and more. Volunteers quilted these signs representing the hobo's secret language into each square.

Land Trust Open Swim Every Wednesday in August Twin Lakes will sponsor
Wednesdays
that are open to the public. Come picnic, hike, splash, swim and
enjoy this great community resource. A volunteer will greet you and answer any questions. Be aware there is no life guard on duty and all swim at their own risk. Adults must
remain with their children. Hours
are from 11-4 each Wednesday for the month of August. Donations toward the up keep of Twin Lakes are greatly appreciated.
Walks in the Woods August 6 – Saluda Mountain Passage
This is a
moderate 3.5 mile, 2-3 hour hike with a drop-off on Heatherly Heights Road and pick up at Talisman Camp on NC 25. Map available at palmettoconservation.org.
August 20 – Grandma's Mountain This is an easy to moderate hike of 1-2 hours on private land protected by a conservation easement held by the Saluda
Community Land Trust. It's a hike suitable for grandmas and grandchildren. September 3 – Twin Lakes This is an Open Swim invitation 11:00 – 4:00. Swimming and
hiking. Bring your own picnic. Enjoy a guided walk on the trails
of Twin Lakes, one which leads to a meditation platform. Leave Fido at home, please. The Walk will
take place at 2:15pm at Twin
Lakes, 255 Linda Lane. Walkers meet 2pm at the parking lot of the Saluda Library. A SCLT member will keep you aware of the terrain of the trail and share their insights about the history,
flora, and fauna of the area as they lead each walk. Prepare for each walk with comfortable shoes, a walking
stick, water, and a snack. Please
provide any pertinent medical history to your guide. Many of these hikes will access private property. For more information click here or contact Chuck Hearon at (828)
817-0364 or [email protected]. Kudzu and Other Invasives We at SCLT
are still working on
removing kudzu. Our prime site is Judd’s Peak Lookout. We are slowly working our way down
the hill. The area where we cleared the kudzu has become a milkweed garden. When the kudzu is removed many native plants spring up.
In the past we have sprayed this
area with kudzu specific herbicide and now we are removing the crown from the root of the plant. This can be done anytime of the year. If you are interested in learning to decrown or just want to help us, please call the office
and we will get back to you. Weather permitting work days will be 8am the first and third Thursdays of the month. In
August we will meet the 3rd and
the 17th. Moody Property There are no volunteer work days August. Stay tuned for information about September's
work days. If you have time to offer other than these dates, please call John Savage, 828-
749-3906.
Twin Lakes Reservations Twin Lakes and Judd’s Peak still have dates available for reservations in August and into the Fall. It is a splendid backdrop for weddings, birthday parties and
family reunions. SCLT Monthly Board Meeting Join us on the first Wednesday of each month, this month August 2
at 3:00 pm at our office in the
Saluda Presbyterian Church fellowship building and find out more about our on-going projects and how you can get involved. Please feel free to contact us about any of our projects by

Glen Robert Morgan shared with
members of the Historic Saluda Committee what his life has been like growing up and living the majority of his life in Saluda, NC. We can tell you right now. He was quite the hotrod!
Thank you to Dot Ulrey Dot loaned us a small photo collection from the 1950’s. Dot's grandfather, Rev. Andrew Ernest Cornish was Episcopal clergy. As
a child her family were the first to
stay in one of the clergy houses on Louisiana Avenue. Dot was born in 1928 and has been coming to Saluda to stay in her family home nicknamed "Sky Shack" all her life. Dot's parents
were Sarah C. Cornish and Richard Tyler Crawford. Her father died when she was one
year old. Her mother remarried a
Mr. King. Dot has agreed to let us film an interview with her in the near future. Photos can be viewed on our Facebook page. Donations Appreciated! We frequently receive donations
of old photographs or historical documents relating to Saluda. Sometimes folks loan them to us to scan and digitalize. This is a great way to preserve your family
history or the history of the town.
The Historic Saluda Committee uses archival quality materials to store donated items. Collections are often shared on Facebook and on the website. As the museum grows at the Saluda Historic Depot, we hope to share more at
that location and at other locations around town. There is currently an exhibit of photographs at the Depot provided by the HSC. Contact us

Saluda Signpost Dr. D. Lesesne Smith was a pediatrician from Spartanburg
who had a summer home in Saluda. In 1914 he opened a private Children’s
Sanitarium on land near his home for the treatment of his year-round Spartanburg patients and any other sick children from the Lowlands who would benefit from
a cooler and less humid environment. The success of the institution in improving the health of its young patients prompted a group of philanthropists to then establish the Spartanburg Baby Hospital in Saluda, a charity
hospital to which Dr. Smith donated his services.

Meanwhile, Back in Saluda Have the neighbors dumped more Zucchini on your porch? This is
the time of year when many of us are trying to get rid of extra zucchini! We have a simple, quick recipe that might help take care of some of those zucchini! Stir Fry Zucchini: Rinse zucchini,
pat dry, cut in bite size pieces.
We leave the skin on. Heat Wok or skillet very hot. Add 1 Tablespoon olive oil to Wok. Toss in zucchini and stir around till heated through but still firm and
crunchy. Add a bit of garlic if you like. When almost done, toss in 1 Tablespoon soy sauce. Add a bit of hot sauce if you like. Serve over rice or eat as a side dish. If you need zucchini or other
summer produce, remember the
Saluda Tailgate Market on Friday afternoons (4:30-6:30). Also, check out our sister-store: Meanwhile, Back in Saluda's Local Market (next door to Wildflour Bake Shop) for local
fruits and vegetables. Take a look at the fruit and vegetable displays along Main Street, too for fresh summer produce! Have a great summer!
Remember to check on neighbors
especially those elderly friends who might not have air conditioning. Shop Locally and support local businesses to help keep our community thriving.

Wow! Summer has brought back so many wonderful customers.
We are still marking down merchandise as building is for sale though I get to stay through November. So much merchandise packed into a small
space, we are now 50 % consignment so a broad range of items, lots of antique glassware
as well as mid century modern
furniture and accessories. Really nice wine glass sets and bar ware and fun vintage and everyday unusual kitchen items. Books are half price and have loaded several baskets full of dollar items just to move out some smalls which are
great bargains. Gently worn consigned clothes are also marked down, mostly cotton, linen and classic. We also have hats and baskets to beat the heat
and head to the tailgate market.
And, as always, Miss Sheila needs to have a kid’s section. Midday hours, Monday through Thursday, longer hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 12 – 3/4 ish. Thanks for your support. Shopping small town and local always a great
idea! Trying to keep somewhat regular hours, but you can call for a casual appointment, or to see
about consigning, 828-606-1748 (Sheila).

Cardinals are one of North Carolina's state symbols.
Ms. McRostie read us a book
called Snowflake Bentley. He was a scientist and discovered that all snowflakes are unique. He took photos of snowflakes with a special camera. We learned that they have six sides/points and are made of frozen water vapor that
falls from very cold clouds. Then we painted snowflakes all over our blue background paper.
Our red Cardinal had wings that
we traced using our hands and fingers. This pretty bird has a real red tail feather. He looks like he is flying in the night.
Stories & Such
Oral History Interview with Mildred and Priscilla Pearson Members of the Historic Saluda Committee, Cindy Stephenson Tuttle and Jeremy Williams, spent an enjoyable July morning visiting
with Mildred Pearson, or
Millie as she likes to be called, and Priscilla Pearson. Millie is the granddaughter of the famed Captain Charles W. Pearson, a
railroad engineer who is credited with the task of bringing the railroad up the steep Saluda Grade. Priscilla is Millie's niece and great granddaughter of Capt.
Pearson. Millie lives in Melrose on
Pearson Falls Road, a stone's throw from the #2 safety track and actually lives on the land where Capt. Pearson's home once stood. Millie has a great big stone fireplace made from the stone
that once was part of the Captain's home. Still standing next door is the house where
Priscilla now lives and is the place
of Millie's birth. This house once belonged to Giles William Pearson, a son of Capt. Pearson and Millie's father. Millie spoke fondly of her childhood saying that Pearson Falls and the train tracks at Melrose were her
playgrounds. Millie requested to go on record that it was actually her father who bought Pearson Falls after the Civil War from land speculators or carpetbaggers and
owned it until the Great
Depression. He lost the property to the bank but was very instrumental in getting the Tryon Garden Club to buy it because he knew the value of the plants and trees that were there. Millie holds in high regard, much like her
father did, the plants and wildlife found around the Pearson Falls area and can identify the many species of wildflowers that are indigenous to the area. Priscilla
takes pride in being the family historian and shared a great deal
of the Pearson Family history. Details of this interview are forthcoming when the entire interview will be edited and uploaded to YouTube. Keep your eye on this column for when that
is complete. In the meantime, Priscilla shared an interesting story written by another son of Capt. Charles Pearson, also named Charles Pearson, about the day the Captain met his
future bride, Susan Bruce
Shepard: My Mother, Susan Bruce Shepard by Charles Pearson (son of Capt. Charles Pearson) My mother,
Susan Bruce Shepard Pearson, had her back injured when she was an
infant. About the
same time her father became interested with other people from Alabama, but the only way to get to Alabama was by private conveyance to Mobile. That was quite a trip, so
my mother's parents left her in Elizabeth City with her grandmother. It was a long time
before the parents could come
back to get her. Then she would not go with them as she was nearly grown and had a mind of her own. Most of her brothers and sisters were born in Alabama and continued to live there. When my mother was grown
and still living in Elizabeth City, she visited in Asheville with her aunt, Margaret Martin Russell,
and with her uncle
General James Green Martin who lived in Asheville after the Civil War. The trip to Asheville from Elizabeth City was by stage or private conveyance to Norfolk
then by rail to Raleigh and Old Fort, and then by stage coach up the mountain to Asheville. After one of those visits to Asheville, Susan B. Shepard was coming
down the mountain by stage coach. My father, Charles W.
Pearson, was also coming down the mountain on the same coach on his way to Salisbury. The stage coach overturned and rolled partly down the mountain. The custom, in those days, was for
the lady passengers to ride inside the coach, and for the men, unless there was room inside, to ride on top of the coach. In this case, my father was on the top of the coach. When the coach
wrecked, he, of course, jumped
clear. The ladies inside were pinned under and in the wreckage. My father was the hero who got my mother out and so they met. Photos of Captain Charles W.
Pearson and wife, Susan Bruce Shepard Pearson compliments of Carolina Pearson Mims, great granddaughter.

Saluda Faces
Archie and Bevie Hardy Saluda Faces recognizes Saluda citizens that you may see often and wonder who they are, what they do, and why they live or work in Saluda. If you would like to refer someone for Saluda Faces, please email [email protected].
Archie and Bevie first met at Still Hopes about 10 years
ago. Both are from
SC; Bevie grew up in Charleston and Archie
in Columbia. After both lost their spouses in the fall of 2009, they re-met at a wedding in February of 2010 and read below for the rest of their story. They married in October of 2011,
sold their respective properties in SC and moved to Archie’s house
on Shand Hill in Saluda which he has owned for 17 years. Archie has been coming to Saluda since the age of 2 and remembers
childhood friends like Dave Rembert, Julian Shand, and Ben Gause that also vacationed here in Saluda in the summers. His parents would rent a house and spend a few weeks here every
summer. He came to western NC for summer camp for about 16
summers starting when he was about 8 years old. He went to Sky Valley, Sequoia, and Kanuga in NC, and other camps in SC and GA.
Bevie was a camper at Ton-A-Wandah in Flat Rock, NC for eight years finishing up as a counselor. She is also a Master Gardener, and you can witness it first hand when you see the house and the
decorations on the back deck. In
the 1970's while living on Fripp Island, Bevie authored a seafood cookbook with three other friends, "Fripp Island Fare" and had a wonderful time doing it.
She was also a jewelry designer in the late 80's with two other
friends and found it to be an eye opening experience. She also paints. Judy Thompson
encouraged her to join a three
day class to improve her painting skills 15 months ago, and she just sold her first painting. Archie has been playing the banjo and ukulele for many years and plays at three nursing homes, one
of which, Autumn Care, is in Saluda. He has a passion for duplicate bridge and welcomes any questions or conversations about bridge. Recently, he and
his partner, Bill Rearick, came in
fourth in a North American Bridge Game. Being involved along with two of his three adult children in Rotary International, he also enjoys Republican politics and public
speaking, represents Saluda in the Polk County Commission on Aging, and is a member of the Saluda Parks and Recreation Committee. He also served in the
South Carolina legislature for five years as a page, then two terms
as an elected representative from 1979- 1982. After earning degrees from USC, UNC Chapel Hill and a doctorate in education from University of Georgia, he was actively involved in Parks and
Recreation administration in the state. He also was one of four men who invented the game of Four Square Ball. It’s designed to be played in a 16 square foot area by elementary school
children and up.
They are both active members of Transfiguration Episcopal Church in town. Bevie is in the Woman's Club and Altar Guild; Archie is an usher, a member of the Men's Club, and helps with church
breakfasts. Archie also represented the Episcopal Church in a national conference in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The picture above is from a trip
they took to Italy. So now you know what they look like. They aren’t shy, so if you see them around town or at the Welcome Table someday, ask them about
their trip and anything else, now that you know a little about them.
