You can now get the best gas and electricity deals thanks to our new, independent energy comparison service.

The new www.sevenoaksswitch andsave.co.uk

service lets homeowners and businesses compare the tariffs of energy suppliers highlighting where they could switch supplier and save money.

Unlike many comparison websites, which only look at the tariffs from the biggest energy suppliers, Switch and Save is completely impartial, comparing prices from all UK energy suppliers.

It’s easy and quick to use – simply enter your postcode and start comparing prices for gas, electricity or both.

And if you don’t have internet access don’t worry, you can still use the service over the phone by calling the free phone number 0800 410 1147 or 01732 227111 from a mobile phone.

The average household savings using the service range from £120 to £150 a year. Cllr Robert Piper, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Energy Efficiency, says:

“Commissions received by the Council for each switch will be reinvested in further energy efficiency and fuel poverty initiatives to help vulnerable residents and the local community.”

Autumn means the harvest season, and the harvest season may see an increase in rodents. So what can be done if these unwelcome guests take a hold in your home or business?

Mice and easy – autumnal pest control advice

John and Mark in our Pest Control team are here to help tackle your pest problems with their

wealth of experience which spans more than 50 years!

John says: “The first thing to do is to identify that the unwelcome guest is definitely what you think it is! Seems obvious, but it’s important that you know what the pest is. If you then choose to take the DIY approach, be careful. There are strict rules regarding the use of both traps and poisons, and at

no point should non-target species ever be at risk.”

Our Pest Control Team is always on hand to solve this seasonal issue as well as most other pest control problems. And unlike many other pest control providers, our prices arefully inclusive of multiple visits to rid you of your pest problems.

Recycle right!4 News

Across the District you have been doing a fantastic job recycling, with more than 98% of materials put into your clear sacks being recycled! Our weekly collections help it to get from your house to the recycling centre where it is separated into high-quality recyclables for re-use. Here’s how it all works:

On average more

than 575 tonnes of recycled materials are collected each month, that’s an equivalent of

48 double decker buses!

Don’t forget you can

recycle all paper, card, plastic bottles, cans,

tins, empty aerosol cans, metal lids and tops, clean foil and foil containers in your clear sack! Please

rinse your cans and containers!

1. We collect your

recycling every week.

4. Materials are put into

a ‘Trommel’, where they

start to get sorted.

7. All of the remaining materials are

then prepared to be put into bales.

5. Workers look for any materials or

large items which need to be removed.

6. Materials are then passed through an optical sorter, which uses infrared technology to identify and sort the different plastic bottles.

2. Once full, our trucks drop off the materials to a central transfer station.

3. The waste sorting provider collects the

materials and takes them to a plant.

8. The separated materials are then

packed into tight bales, ready to be bought

by companies that will reuse them.

Do not put glass bottles

in your clear sack! Remember glass, bottles and jars can be recycled

at more than 40 recycling sites across

the District.

9. Brand-new items (like the ones pictured) are then made, and the process starts all over again!

Ann-Marie’s ‘pawsitively’ important jobIt’s always nice to have a valued job with variety and this couldn’t be truer for our Animal Welfare Officer. In Shape caught up with Ann-Marie Milton who one day can be helping with a lost dog and the next locating a loose snake in the home!

Ann-Marie Milton has worked as our Animal Welfare Officer for more than five years and her

role can be as tough as it is rewarding.

She says: “There are a lot of different aspects to my job. As well as collecting stray dogs and helping to reunite them with owners, I also have responsibility for rehoming them, dealing with noise nuisance, welfare issues as well as coordinating promotions, animal licensing, dog fouling and neutering. I also microchip dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.”

“It can be emotionally draining but you have to put your feelings to one side and deal with the situation at hand. Reuniting stolen dogs with owners is without doubt the most rewarding part of my job!”

Ann-Marie works jointly with Dartford Borough Council as part of the Environmental Health Partnership. She also works with staff from private kennels, Kent Police, housing associations and the RSPCA.

Ann-Marie, who herself owns two rescue dogs as well as chickens and fish, says on average she has around 25 calls per month about stray dogs and deals with about four different cases on any one day.

We asked Ann-Marie what would be the best advice she would give to pet owners: “That’s got to be micro-chipping.

“While it clearly doesn’t work for all animals you can microchip most, including cats and dogs. You can even microchip some reptiles like tortoises. If a beloved pet is ever lost, micro-chipping will drastically improve the chances of the animal’s safe return. Remember, if

you move home, you will need to update your details with the micro-chipping company. By April 2016, the law says all dogs will need to be micro chipped.”

“Another is neutering your cat. Not only does it stop unwanted litters, it has health benefits as well.”

Reflecting on her most difficult case to deal with, Ann Marie said: “I picked up a stray dog about a year ago. We believed we had found the owners but they denied it was theirs, she was only young and suffered horrific injuries and unfortunately could not be saved. I was there in her last moments and that was really tough.”

And what has been her strangest case? “That’s easy, I was once asked

to look for a snake which was making its way around a house; the owner even left the flat because of it. We never did find that snake!”

For more information, or to arrange for your pet to be microchipped, visit www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/animalwelfare or call 01732 227000.

Get ready for winterAs the nights draw in and the weather turns colder, now is the time to start thinking of the practical steps you can take to keep yourself and your family safe.

Flooding:Flooding is a very real threat for many people and can become a problem very quickly. You can help prepare for this by taking the following steps.

• Sign up to the Environment Agency’s free flood warnings at environment-agency.gov.uk. The website can also tell you if you live in an area at risk of flooding.

• Find out if there’s a nearby community flood group or how to set one up at www.nationalfloodforum.org.uk

Pavements and roads: For details of winter gritting and snow clearance from public roads and pavements, visit the Kent County Council website at www.kent.gov.uk/highways @KentHighways.

Refuse collections: During severe weather our refuse collection arrangements may change as it’s not safe to drive large refuse vehicles on untreated residential roads or inclines. If your refuse is not collected, please take your bags back inside and put them out again the following week on your usual collection day unless we advise otherwise.

Snow:Snow may look safe but beneath it lies hidden dangers including black ice. Read our tips below on how to prepare ahead of the winter season.

Clearing snow: You can clear snow and ice from pavements yourself. It's easier to move when it’s fresh and loose rather than hard and compacted. For advice on snow clearance visit www.gov.uk/clear-snow-road-path-cycleway. Never use water to melt snow as it may refreeze and turn to black ice. Instead you can use ordinary table or dishwasher salt - a tablespoon for each square metre you clear should work.

Stan keeps his feet on the groundA Swanley resident with a passion for plants is continuing to stay fit and active in the garden thanks to our Falls Prevention Classes.

In Shape spoke with 82 year old Stan Long, a former landscape management professional and

keen gardener.

Stan, who has lived in the town for more than 40 years, attends our Falls Prevention Classes that have helped more than 50 older people over the last year to stay safe, active and independent by staying on their own two feet.

Stan says: “Although I’ve not had a fall, in recent years I had become more and more concerned that I may have one. I was quite worried that if I started to lean forward, even a little, I would lose my balance, stumble and end up on the floor. I know that at my age this can have serious, even life-threatening consequences.

“But when I heard about the Council’s Falls Prevention Classes I thought it may help so I decided to give it a go.

“The classes are all about building up your body strength with simple exercises, improving balance and using tactics to help you stay on your feet in a no pressure, supportive environment. Best of all you’re encouraged to go at your own pace.

“You start with a few seat-based exercises then you stand up to do a few gentle exercises to build up your leg muscles. Later there are further gentle exercises to improve your upper body strength by building up the muscles in your arms and shoulders.

“Improving your balance is obviously important, so part of the course is spent walking on your toes and your heels.

“But crucially it’s the tactics taught throughout the course which really help. One of the things you’re told is how to gradually stand up from

a seated position, reducing your risk of falling.

“If the worst happens, and you do fall over, you are taught how to get back on your feet without panicking using various positions that minimise the risk of further injury.

“Thanks to the course I am much more confident on my feet and I really

believe that I can continue to stay active for longer. My wife Pauline is very pleased as well. She has seen my confidence grow since I took part in the Council’s Falls Prevention Classes giving us more opportunities to spend time together in our garden.”

10 Community Safety

From October the new powers at our disposal will include:

• Community Protection Notice – A warning to stop a person aged 16 or over, or a business or organisation committing ASB.

• Civil Injunction – To stop or prevent individuals engaging in persistent ASB.

• Criminal Behaviour Order – Issued by any criminal court against a person who has been convicted of an offence to tackle the most persistent anti-social individuals who are also engaged in criminal activity.

• Closure Order – To allow the police or Council to close premises which are being used, or likely to be used, to commit nuisance or disorder.

• Community Remedy – The Community Remedy gives victims a say in the out-of-court punishment of perpetrators for low-level crime and ASB.

• Community Trigger – Gives victims and communities the right to request a review of their case and bring agencies together to take a joined up, problem-solving approach to find a solution.

The new powers coincide with a roadshow being held by West Kent Housing Association at Jubilee Hall, Horton Kirby on 20 October to promote their latest ASB campaign.

The housing association, which works closely with the District Council, manages some 6,500 affordable homes across Kent. With input from both perpetrators and victims its new campaign delivers messages that encourage people to change their behaviour.

The housing association has many tools at its disposal to tackle persistent problems including enforcing tenancy contracts. Where necessary it works with its partners – Kent Police, the Council and other

agencies – to deal with problems.

The West Kent roadshows will promote responsible dog ownership, together with advice on noisy neighbours, anti-social behaviour and fly tipping. These roadshows are free and open to everyone. The Council's Animal Welfare Officer will be on hand to micro chip dogs and offer advice.

You can meet the West Kent team at Jubilee Hall, Horton Kirby on Monday 20 October from 11am to 1pm.

For future dates and more information contact West Kent Housing Association on 01732 749400 or visit www.westkent.org/Residents/Community-safety/ Anti-Social_Behaviour

Leading the way in tackling the ASB ActThe new Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) Act comes into effect on 20 October 2014. The Sevenoaks District Community Safety Partnership (CSP) has been working hard to ensure we are ready to implement the new powers it will give us.

District’s top cop in the hot seatIn this issue of In Shape we caught up with Kent Police’s Chief Inspector Tim Cook, the District’s most senior policeman.

Tim took over responsibility for policing the District in November 2012 and tells us about his

priorities and challenges.

How long have you worked in the police?I've worked in the sector for 20 years.

Why did you join?My family has a long history in policing. I originally joined the Royal Military Police when I left the Army, but always wanted to be a policeman. It was a family tradition.

What does your role as Chief Inspector of the District involve?I’m responsible for the delivery of all local policing and providing a first class service to all communities in the District.

What are Kent Police’s priorities for Sevenoaks District? Our priorities are tackling crime linked to substance misuse, reducing domestic abuse and anti-social behaviour and improving road safety.

And what’s being done about these priorities? As part of the Community Safety Partnership we tackle these crimes as well as responding to calls. We have also set up a community policing team to deal with these specific issues.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced as the Chief Inspector?Sevenoaks District is a safe place to live and work and we currently have the

lowest recorded victim based crime in Kent. But the District’s diversity and its size can make policing it a challenge.

Why did Kent Police introduce a new structure in the summer? Our budgets have already been reduced by £53 million and will be cut a further £20 million over the next two years. The restructure allows us to respond to this reduced budget while remaining flexible enough to sustain an effective police service.

What does this new structure mean for the Sevenoaks District? The restructure has been very positive for us. It has seen the number of officers significantly increase with a new, dedicated 24/7 team working across the whole District. This has increased our ability to proactively tackle crime while allowing us to maintain neighbourhood policing. It also gives us better working relationships with our partners in the Community Safety Unit.

The Swanley facility has been offering archery coaching for some months with weekly sessions

for juniors and those aged 18 and over. As Coach and Assistant Centre Manager Mark Stewart-Paver explains, the interest has been such that the Centre is doubling the equipment and spaces available to cope with demand.

“Archery has really taken flight here at White Oak and has caught the imagination. It’s a bit more of an unusual sporting choice but it’s very easy for those who have never picked up a bow before and it’s a really sociable pursuit,” says Mark.

Sevenoaks Leisure Centre served as an official host facility for the fifth annual global record

attempt at The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL).

Team WLSL holds the current Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson, which stands at 32,450 participants representing 13 different countries across five continents in 2013. However, that record was broken this summer.

Jane Parish, Chief Executive, Sencio Community Leisure, says: “Accidental drowning accounts for a third of all fatalities among British children

while the obesity levels and general fitness of the UK’s young people gives continued cause for concern.

“Inviting local youngsters to take part in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson was a great way to get across important messages about water safety and fitness in a fun and inspiring way.”

“We introduced it into our programme as we couldn’t see anything else like it available

locally. The response has been terrific so we’re delighted to be able to continue

and expand the courses.”

White Oak operates coaching as a six-week programme on Thursdays between 4.30pm and 5.30pm for those aged between eight and 17 and 6pm to 7pm for 18s and over. On completion of a course, participants can roll over to the next to further develop

their skills and progress towards becoming an FITA certified archer.

The next six-week archery course starts at White Oak Leisure Centre

on Friday 13 November and costs £27.60 (cardholders) and £33.65 (for non

cardholders). To book call 01322 662188.

The next 10-week swimming course, aimed at youngsters of all ages and levels of ability and confidence, starts at Edenbridge, Sevenoaks and White Oak (Swanley) Leisure Centres on Monday 13 October. For further details visit www.sencio.org.uk

For the past eight years Sue Larken has been the phase four cardiac rehabilitation instructor at

Swanley’s White Oak Leisure Centre. During that time she has worked with some 120 patients in addition to the 60 or more who regularly attend her twice-weekly 'Take Heart' exercise classes.

“Partners are a huge part of the equation in helping someone in recovery from cardiac illness and we work hard to include and support them,” says Sue, who has been an instructor at White Oak for 24 years.

“It’s not easy for them as they are understandably worried and protective, they can be scared and they often have lots of practical questions, which might typically be something like 'should I be encouraging my husband to go clean the car' or 'should they just sit in a chair watching television?'”

The road back to good health following a heart attack or cardiac illness can be a long one for a patient who is facing physical concerns and emotional stresses. It’s also one that can be challenging for the partners of those embarking on rehabilitation.

The ‘Take Heart’ programme at White Oak has been successful not just in helping patients but in creating a support network explains Sue, who actively encourages partners to ask

questions and, if they choose, to come along and join the exercise classes.

“Our aim is to give both patient and their nearest and dearest the support, knowledge and advice they need when leaving hospital but we also recognise there are patients living alone, so practical advice such as eating healthy when cooking for one, is also something we try and offer.

“What’s lovely is that partners feel their other half is in safe hands when on the ‘Take Heart’ programme and that hopefully allows them to be more confident and feel supported during the rehabilitation process.”

Peter and Michelle had rented a privately-owned two-bedroom flat in the town for six years.

During this period they started a family and soon realised that it was just not practical to be living in a relatively small home without outdoor space.

For years they’d aspired to own their own property but high-prices in the area put their dreams of becoming homeowners out of reach, a familiar story for many families.

But last year all that changed. In April 2013 they contacted Moat and found out that they were eligible for a new shared ownership scheme called ‘A Home of Your Own’.

Moat and Sevenoaks District Council teamed up to offer the scheme to first time buyers who live or work in the District, who otherwise cannot afford to buy.

The scheme is based on a shared ownership. The buyer purchases a share of a home, purchased on the open market, while paying rent to Moat on the remainder. Shares are available from 50% to 75% of the property with a maximum grant of £100,000.

Peter, Michelle and their son moved into their new three bedroom family home last February. Being close to transport links for their work, local schools and immediate family, they’re thrilled to have been able to afford the house.

Peter says: “We have been privately renting for many years, having moved a couple of times before starting a family. We were reluctant to continue to do this as we needed long-term stability for our son. It felt like we were throwing money down the drain, without having anything to show for it.

After many years of disappointment, a Swanley family has finally landed their own home thanks to a new scheme run by Moat housing association and the Council.

Peter and Michelle’s dream comes true

“We desperately needed more room to accommodate our growing family, with decent bedrooms and outside space. Plus we needed to stay in the same area which meant our choices were limited. When we saw A Home of Your Own we were really excited to find out there could be another way to help us move into a proper family home.

“Moat and the Council have helped us achieve home ownership. We have

never bought a home before, so it was a big step. Moat made sure we were comfortable with every stage of the process and took the time to explain everything, from the very beginning right through to the day we moved in!”

To find out more about A Home of Your Own, visit www.ahomeofmyown.org.uk or contact Vikki Baines at Moat on [email protected] or 0845 359 6873.

Historic homes on your doorstepDid you know that you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to days out exploring local castles, historic houses and homes?

They overflow with fascinating facts, relics of past fortunes, fairy tale romances and scandals. Yet,

at the same time they are changing to cater for the needs of modern visitors.

Knole, in Sevenoaks town, is currently creating a major National Trust conservation centre investing heavily in the restoration of the grand houses set in extensive lands including a 1,000-acre medieval deer park.

Once an Archbishop’s Palace, Knole is one of the finest treasure houses of England. The new conservation centre will provide improved facilities ensuring that Knole’s fine furniture collection, credited as one of the best in the world, receives the care and attention it deserves.

A short drive away are the imaginative Riverhill Himalayan Gardens and privately-owned Penshurst Place and Gardens.

The impressive property is shaped by the architecture and grandeur of the house and its gardens, which is shown throughout be it exploring in the toy museum, strolling through the lavish entertaining rooms or wandering around the many gardens.

The Porcupine, central to the Sidney family crest, can be found in many forms from serious traditional statements of ownership and power to fun topiary and sculpture to one of the most recent additions to the attraction – the Porcupine Pantry.

Meanwhile, Chiddingstone Castle, with its wealth of special events and stunning views, dates from the Tudor period. It was re-fashioned as a medieval castle in the early 19th century. Today’s visitors can experience the many differences between the upstairs and downstairs life during the castle’s Victorian era.

Chiddingstone is home to the collections of eccentric Denys Eyre Bower. His passion for Japanese lacquer and Samurai armour, Egyptian treasures, Buddhist objects and Stuart paintings is legendary.

The romance of Hever Castle, originally built in the 13th century, has been captured in books, films and television programmes keen to tell the story of the rise and dramatic fall of its most famous daughter, Anne Boleyn.

Yet many of the aspects of the Castle can be traced to businessman and philanthropist William Waldorf Astor, who bought the huge estate in 1903. Examples include the Tudor Village, lake and the Castle’s famed Italian Gardens.

Today’s Hever Castle successfully incorporates and celebrates its long history, its impressive and widely varied gardens, its programme of family-fun events and its high quality visitor accommodation.

Attractions change and so do visitors. Many of the heritage destinations in the Sevenoaks District have their own Facebook and Twitter pages with up-to-date information and intriguing anecdotes from visitors and staff alike highlighting their 21st century life.

Frontline Kent focuses attention on ChartwellThis year Kent is playing a leading role in the national commemorations of key events in both World War One and World War Two.

Frontline Kent, a special website created by the county’s tourism champions at Visit Kent, is the

go-to source for all information about how the county’s many top visitor destinations supported military initiatives and the less familiar roles many country houses played – caring for injured soldiers, developing new weapons, and supplying and monitoring military intelligence.

The information-packed website includes itineraries taking in notable sites for both conflicts and listings of both large and very local special events and activities with frontline and home front themes.

For example, Penshurst Place has a photographic exhibition recording the heroic deeds of the current Viscount de L’Isle maternal grandfather Field Marshal Viscount Gort. He gave outstanding service during the Great War and made the decision to withdraw the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk in 1940 saving many lives. The historic house was seriously

damaged by doodlebugs while local people and prisoners of war struggled to keep the gardens in order.

Meanwhile, Chiddingtone Castle became a billet for Canadian forces which left permanent evidence of their war-time presence with graffiti in the flag tower.

The commemorations of the D-Day Normandy landings, the build-up to World War II and a desire to discover the real man behind the public persona of Winston Churchill are driving record numbers of individual visitors and group tours to Chartwell – Churchill’s bespoke home and gardens at Westerham.

Group visits, particularly battlefield tours from overseas, were up 30 per cent on last year by mid-July while, in spite of wet weather, a record 2,375 people visited the National Trust property over the weekend following the D-Day commemorations. Henry Jarvis, assistant development officer at Chartwell, says: “People

know the big historic events and the significance of Winston Churchill as a national leader, but they are keen to discover the man behind the public image and reputation. Chartwell – his personal creation and solace – offers just that.

“Plus we have more than 205 superb house volunteers available – many served in WW2 and others met Churchill. As a result, many of our visitors gain amazing insights unavailable elsewhere.”

In November Chartwell will be launching an exhibition of the 50th anniversary since Churchill’s death and state funeral. The exhibition will run until 23 February 2015.

“We will be staging new exhibitions and re-interpretations that will reveal even more about Churchill, his career and his family life,” said Mr Jarvis.

Nine community transport services operate within the District providing trips to the

supermarket, hospital or for social events in the town.

One of these is the Kent Karrier Service. Sevenoaks resident Maggie Hall has been using it for two years helping to her to get out and about more easily.

The 74-year old says: “The service transformed my life. I have difficulty getting on and off public buses as I’m partly disabled and also can’t walk to the bus stop as I have breathing difficulties.

“This service is really helpful and picks me up right outside my house. It’s really accommodating. Only recently I had to ring them up on the day as I had forgotten to book my place. But it wasn’t a problem at all!”

The mother of two uses the service twice a week and pays an annual membership charge of £5 and then £1.80 for every return journey.

Maggie adds: “I would definitely encourage others to use it. You have to hold a Blue Badge to qualify so it really does help those who need it most.”

The service is run by the Compaid Trust, which provides services to disabled people across the South East and is supported by Kent County Council.

Other transport services operate across the District, some of which are funded by our Community Grants Scheme.

Consultation helps shape car park proposalThe District Council has submitted a planning application for a new multi-story car park to bring much needed extra car parking space to Sevenoaks town.

TThroughout June, we asked for people’s views on our initial proposals to deck the existing

Buckhurst 2 car park, next to Sevenoaks Leisure Centre, to create an additional 300 parking spaces. More than 500 people took part in our surveys.

The proposals were well received with 65% of the respondents saying that additional parking spaces are needed in the town.

More than 90% said the car park should be clad in materials to help it fit in with its surroundings.

However, some residents, who live nearby, expressed concerns that the proposed car park could overshadow their property.

In response to these comments and concerns we have amended our initial plans.

The planning application proposes that the car parks will now be clad in a combination of materials that are sympathetic with the surroundings and lessen the impact of the building on neighbouring land and property.

A living wall is proposed on certain elevations, which will be made up of climbing plants to enhance the building’s appearance while helping it to fit it with the nearby surroundings. Living walls have other environmental advantages as they can help reduce noise, provide wildlife habitats and even improve air quality.

An intermediate floor is proposed at the Leisure Centre/Knole park elevation to make more efficient use of this space so the structure better fits in with the natural topography of the land. This also allows additional parking spaces to be provided. All existing vegetation on site will remain.

As In Shape went to print, the Council was considering the planning application for the car park. The application is expected to be decided at the Council’s Development Control Committee in November.

Cllr Peter Fleming, Leader of the Council, says: “We have listened carefully to residents and businesses. Whilst most support our proposal, some concerns were raised that we are doing our best to address with changes to the initial design.”

At present there is a chronic shortage of long-stay parking. More than 100 residents and businesses are on waiting lists for long-stay parking permits. An independent report commissioned by the Council earlier this year found that there is an immediate need for additional parking spaces in Sevenoaks Town.
