Matrimonial Advertisement in the Herts Advertiser, 23rd March 1878. From a man desperate for a wife. However, I think that this letter was first printed some years before the given date. I have found this article in six old newspapers in their “times gone by” column. One paper said in 1882: The following strange advertisement from an old newspaper exhibits one of the customs of rural life in England more than a century ago in 1782:- Mattie Dowson wrote; “may no miscarriage, prevent my marriage!” Matthew Dowson, in Bothel, Cumberland, intends to be married at Holme Church* on Thursday before Whitsuntide next, whenever that may happen and return to Bothel to dine. Mr. Reed gives a turkey to be roasted; William Elliott gives a hen to be roasted; Edward Clement gives a fat lamb to be roasted; Joseph Gibson gives a fat pig to be roasted; William Hughes gives a fat calf to be roasted, and in order that all this roast will be well basted - do you see? - Mary Pearson, Betty Hughes, Mary Bushby, Molly Fisher, Sarah Briscol, and Betty Porthoust give, each of them, a pound of butter. I, Mattie Dowson will provide everything else suitable for so festive an occasion; and he hereby gives notice to all young women desirous of changing their condition, that he is disengaged, and he advises them to consider that although there be luck in leisure, yet, in this case, delays are dangerous; for with him, he is determined that it shall be - first come, first served.

“So, come along, lasses, who wish to be married - Mattie Dowson is vexed that so long he has tarried.”

So, who said that ‘online dating’ and ‘speed dating’ was new? Or was it all an April fool’s wind-up? We will never know. *Holmcultram Abbey was a Cistercian monastery in what is now the village of Abbey Town in Cumbria. Founded in 1150 and dissolved in 1538, at the Dissolution, Holm Cultram remains a parish church and a place of worship.

Dear Friends, Many thanks for the wonderful warm welcome that you have already given to Sally and me, and the family, since our arrival here in Cumbria. We are very grateful for the cards and the messages of support. We are excited to be starting our new phase of ministry in an area which we have come to know and love over the past 32 years. As I shared at my Licensing Service, we have spent so many holidays in the Northern Lake District that it has become like a second home to us and it is exciting that God has given us the opportunity to live and minister here. We have walked many of the fells and having got to know the Lake District so well, we now look forward to getting to know all of you. For the past 19 years, we have been living in North Warwickshire where I have been Vicar to 6 villages and 5 churches with 3 Church of England Primary Schools, and a parish population of about 3,800 people. Our 2 children, James and Joanna, were only very young when we moved to North Warwickshire and have now grown up and left home. James lives in Leicester and works for Holy Trinity, Leicester, as Deputy Operations Manager, and Joanna is an Outdoor Activities Leader, and works at Bryanston School in Dorset. Sally is a Maths teacher and will be teaching at Nelson Thomlinson School. Both Sally and I were born and brought up in Nottingham, and we moved back to Nottingham whilst I trained for ordination. James was only 5 months old at the time and Joanna was born when we were there, so all of us consider Nottingham to be our home. Before ordination we lived in Northampton, and I worked in retail management for a national retail company, and Sally worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst. Apart from a love of the Lake District and walking the fells, I enjoy most sports, but I have a particular love of cricket – my family would say obsession – and I probably have more books on cricket than theology. Here in Binsey, we are very fortunate to have 12 historic churches, which are maintained and cared for by a very loyal and committed group of congregations, seeking to work more closely together to share the love of Jesus Christ. Wherever we live and worship, we all have a common bond and unity, as St. Paul writes in Ephesians chapter 2: ‘We are fellow-citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him, the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.’ Paul gives us all a breath-taking vision of the new community which God has created, with all our relationships held and joined together by Jesus, and God himself dwelling within us through his Holy Spirit, and this continues to be our vision and our prayer for Binsey. With every blessing, Stephen

Would you like a visit from the Church? If you would like a visit from the Church, we have a special group of people, commissioned by the Bishop, called Pastoral Visitors. Along with the Clergy, the visitors are available and willing to visit anyone at home, in hospital or in a nursing home. Maybe you know a person who is ill or housebound and would just like to chat to someone. Possibly your neighbour has been taken into hospital or you have small children and would just like a bit of adult conversation. Whatever the reason, we are here to help. You can request a visit for yourself or on behalf of someone and a member of the team will be in touch to arrange a suitable visiting time. E-mail us at [email protected], call us on 016973 71504, or have a chat with your Church Warden and they will send your request to us. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are here for you.

Midweek Prayer - 12 Midday, every Wednesday

More than anything else, praying together brings about change. Praying with one another, we can witness God

produce miracles and change hearts. A time to pause in the middle of the week. Come and see

what God can do.

September - St. James’ Church, Ireby October - St James’ Church, Uldale

Please come and join with us for half an hour of led prayer.

Prayer Breakfast The Prayer Breakfast will be on Tuesday 24th Sept at

9am in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Plumbland. Do come. A lovely event and we will be joined by the children of

Plumbland School, making it even more special.

Résumé of Stepping Stones Café Church - 23rd June at the Globe Hall, Ireby. Because of the village outing, we were rather light in numbers, but 14 lovely people were there to hear of the love and power of Jesus Christ in “I can’t, but HE can!!!” Margaret gave us three examples of occasions when just that happened. The love and grace of God enabled what seemed like impossible forgiveness and gave the peace and joy that we can’t find within ourselves. Beautiful songs of praise led by “Travelling Light”, a most moving and honest prayer written by Jenny de Robek. Endless homemade cakes, what more could one want?

Volunteer wanted - Can you help? The Binsey Team Mission Community is looking for a volunteer to act as the statutory Parish Electoral Roll Officer. This person is not required to be a member of any DCC or the PCC. The individual Electoral Roll Officers in each District in the Mission Community, record all alterations to the Electoral Roll in that district, but the PCC needs someone to co-ordinate this information annually to produce a single Parish Roll in the Spring. This is currently held on a spreadsheet. There is a minimal commitment in terms of time. The role requires just a few hours work each year concentrated around March and early April. For further information please contact the PCC secretary on [email protected].

September 2019 6

Being a Mission Community Culture is the water in which we swim. Like fish, we do not notice the ‘water’ of our culture, but it is all around us, comprising our customs, thinking, language, and lifestyles. However, the water can be good or bad for us to the degree to which it is polluted in some way - or not. When you think about it, there is good and bad in all cultures - sometimes balanced more wisely in some more than in others. Tensions such as, Xenophobia or hospitality? Tradition or creative change? Excess or modesty? Efficiency or relationships? Privacy or community? Work or pleasure? The first Christians were persecuted as atheists under the Roman boot for not believing in every other god! Today, things are somewhat reversed, with Christians being dismissed for not believing in everything except God! In computing, there is a term from programming that seems appropriate here as we consider the culture that shapes our lives: GIGO, which means ‘garbage in, garbage out.’ So, it is with our minds and bodies, our airwaves, and our planet. Sky TV has been plugging away (via Ocean Rescue/Live broadcasts) at the dreadful plague of plastic pollution in our oceans - perhaps, a lot more effectively than politicians have been in implementing the Climate Change agreements from the Kyoto Protocols, dating back to 1992! In a similar manner, many churches have become hosts for health classes of all kinds. But it’s not the main task of the Christian church to attend to bodily health, important though that is. We have been charged with the task of what was called the ‘cure of souls’ for centuries - which is what it sounds like. That’s the reason behind having a mission community here. We are a body of people, who have joined together to better serve and bless our

community, and not just to keep our old buildings going, or as a holy club - valuable though sacred spaces and gatherings for worship and teaching are. We take to heart this insight: ‘If you don't like change, you're going to like irrelevance even less.’ Eric Shinseki, the first Asian-American General in the US Army. One of the positive fruits of Postmodernism in our society (which is the source of ‘post truth’ seeping into art, science, morality, and politics) is a recovery of the spiritual dimension of life - the re-enchantment of the world. Jesus spoke about becoming like children, not childish [Matt 18:3]. What does this mean or entail - for adults most of all? It is the ability to exist and enjoy the present moment, the good that is around us, to see and explore the creative side of ourselves without guilt, and to trust in God who put it all together. In Paul's letter to Timothy, [1 Tim 6:17] writing to Christians with sage advice on living out the faith, he states ‘do not trust in money, for God has given us richly all good things that He has made to enjoy. ’ Christian faith and community are not about avoiding or misusing God’s world and others, but right use of things for the good of other people. As a wise saying goes, ‘People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason why the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used.’ Tragically and worryingly, our earth is being abused too. We can float along in the ocean of our society, we can indulge in its errors, or we can swim, even against the tide, and make our journey worthwhile alongside others into the depths of God’s loving intentions. As Dory said in the 2003 film, Finding Nemo, when she and Marlin where lost: ‘ This is the Ocean, silly, we’re not the only two in here.’ There is a big Ocean out there, but helpers are out there (if we ask) and there is an even bigger God too.

Choose any one of our Twelve Churches for YOUR special day! Congratulations if you have just got engaged and are thinking about getting married in one of the Binsey Mission Community's 12 churches. If you currently live anywhere within the Binsey Mission Community area, then you can get married in our Churches. If you live elsewhere, but have a family connection to a Church, or want to come and worship regularly in our Churches, then we’d love to help you. We would like to welcome you and help you make your life-long marriage vows in our holy places set aside to

worship God. You are very welcome to join us in any of our Sunday services, and to look around the particular Church you have chosen to make your wedding promises in and meet our friendly congregations. Please contact our Team Administrator, Catriona Kinghan, for a friendly chat. After gathering a few simple details, she will then invite you to chat with one of our Vicars. Baptism in the Binsey Team Mission Community We are really pleased when parents approach us about Baptism (also known as Christening) for their child. It’s a very important step, both for parents and for the child. Infant Baptism involves parents and godparents making a public commitment about their own Christian faith and the Church. They are making a commitment to pray for their child, so that as they grow, with their help, and ours, they may be able to live out in practice the Christian life. To enable parents to do this we ask that you come and join us in worship, either at any of our team churches, or in other venues such as “Stepping Stones” (café church) or Messy Church at some point in the two months BEFORE the date of the baptism. After an enquiry is made, a home visit will be arranged to discuss things informally, to see what level of preparation might be appropriate and answer any questions. For an informal chat about Infant Baptism, please contact the Team Rector, Revd. Stephen Banks on 016973 71541 or our Team Vicar, Revd. Peter Gilroy on 016973 71430.

Mission Community Lending Library

Have you visited the Library at the back of St. Michael’s Church in Torpenhow recently? There are new books being added every month. Why don’t you take out a novel for your holiday or a child’s book of prayers to read with your children before going to bed?

There are books for everyone, covering a wide range of subjects and age groups. As well as novels and exciting books for children, you will find reference books on all aspects of the Bible, as well as plenty of biographies. There are also books to help those struggling with depression, or dementia. In addition to plenty of books, we also have a stock of DVDs and CDs for you to borrow. All this, and a comfortable, warm seating area in which to read and browse, as well as coffee and tea available. If you have suggestions of Christian books you would like us to stock, please let Catriona ([email protected]) know and we will endeavour to buy them. Thank you to everyone who has already made suggestions and to all those who have donated books for the library. Let us know how we can improve the library and make it better for you, but most of all come and have a look and borrow a book or two to read at home! Please note that at the moment the library is full, so

please donate your books elsewhere for now, until we

have made some more room. Thank you.

Bright and windy outside, warm and welcoming and packed with people inside, that was St Cuthbert's for our strawberry tea. Everyone having a good chat and enjoying the afternoon tea. A good number stayed on for the Songs of Praise, ably lead by our host Graham, and accompanied by our organist Val, the hymns being rendered in good spirit by all, especially Val's favourite. The ticket sales, raffle and stall raised £627.65 for church funds. Thanks to all who supported our event, all who provided food, the front of house staff in church and those hidden in the Sunday School room. Our Harvest and Gift Day service is on 15th September - all members of our valley community are warmly welcomed. Any gifts of produce and flowers and contributions for food bank and for decorating the church, will be appreciated by Saturday afternoon. Gift money will go to church funds this year, they need a bit of a boost now, so if you would like to help, any contribution would be welcomed. Don't forget our joint valley pie and pea ‘Supper and Beetle Drive’ in the village hall on 21st September – suitable for those aged 0 to 100! Please come and enjoy the evening.

We had a very busy start to July as our 'Patron Saints' weekend got under way. After months of planning and preparation, and a welcome donation from the Aspatria Community Charity shop of £175 towards set-up costs, our weekend was blessed with lovely weather and a good mix of visitors, both old and new, from near and far. All our friends commented on the flowers and displays, thought-up, arranged and displayed in a beautiful way. Our thanks and appreciation go to both Margaret and Hylarie for the time and effort they put into the weekend, and to those who so willingly came and helped to serve the refreshments. In all, a lovely coming together of our greater church family which has resulted in a net total of £1,525 for our funds. During the weekend we were able to display the 'proposed' plan to include a toilet and kitchen area in the North West corner of the church. The response was very positive and the D.C.C. will continue to follow this plan to fruition. Other News: Village hall activities start again in September. Please see the 'halls' notice board to check the time of your favourite activity or event. Ellenvale coaches are now operating a twice weekly bus service from Fletchertown to Cockermouth on Mondays and Thursdays, calling at various villages, including Plumbland, on the route, hope it is of help to you all.

Our next event is our Annual Gift Day which we are holding on two days - Saturday 28th September in the village hall meeting room and Sunday 29th September in Church. Both days there will be church members in attendance between 10am & 12noon to answer any questions you may have about the church, provide 'light' refreshments and plenty of chat! FLOWER ROTA 1st Sept Mrs M. Sowerby, 8th & 15th Sept Miss D Rooke, 22nd & 29th Sept Mrs M. Wood, 6th Oct Mrs M. Rutherford.

BOTHEL Bothel Gardening Club went for a walk! Eleven members of the club opened their gardens for nearly forty members to enjoy. Large and small gardens, there was a delightful variety to see. There was a good variety of vegetables in the gardens too. Broad and runner beans, potatoes, carrots, onions galore and Kohlrabi are just some! The dry weather ensured the display of roses were at their best and the different perennials gave beautiful displays. The walk finished at The Greyhound for members to enjoy a drink together. An evening enjoyed by all! We all congratulate St Michael’s School, Bothel, on achieving an “Outstanding” award in the School’s Cumbria in Bloom 2019 entry. Well done!

Please book directly with Mark or Julie on 016973 71369 or email [email protected] by the previous Tuesday. No criteria for eligibility, just come and enjoy an excellent meal for very good value, in good company and surroundings. Flower and cleaning rota: 1st & 8th Sept - help needed. 15th & 22nd Sept - Lesley Phillip & Jenny MacGregor. 29th Sept - Cathy Rooney & Elizabeth Gill. The Food Bank - please don’t forget to support this and bring some non-perishable foods. The need seems to be greater than ever. There is a box for food under the table on the left, as you enter St. James’ Church, Uldale. Gifts will be taken to the Wigton Food Bank after the Pet Service on Sunday 8th Sept, 2.30pm (replacing the 11am family service). After the 9.15am service of Holy Communion on Sunday 1st Sept at St. James’ Church, Uldale, we meet for coffee and chat at Mae’s Tearooms. There will be a ‘Pet Service’ at 2.30pm on Sunday 8th Sept in St. James’ Churchyard (see separate poster at front of the magazine). Do come and support this special afternoon. Bring the children & any animals, pets, farm animals, equines, elephants, fish, hens or insects. Any of God’s beautiful creatures that He has made & given to us to care for. If you don’t have an animal bring a snail! Please keep yourselves and your animals safe and bring a chair and an umbrella. Squash and biscuits (dog or cat biscuits, carrots/apples) served afterwards.

Stepping Stones Café Church is at the Globe Hall, Ireby on Sunday 22nd Sept at 3pm. See separate poster at the beginning of the magazine. Update on building work The work is progressing extremely well, as those who pass the church will be able to see. Major changes are taking place inside as well with the old plaster coming off the walls prior to being replaced and the under-pew heating being replaced by more efficient radiators, plus changes to the floors. Services are taking place in the Chancel (access via the vestry) and we have all enjoyed a sense of "family" by being so close together. This will continue until the work in the main part of the church nears completion, but it might well be that there will be occasions where a congregation bigger than we can accommodate in the Chancel might come along, e.g. Harvest on 13th October. An exception might have to be made here but information on this and other services as the year moves on can be found on the church noticeboard and by ringing either Hilary Chaddock or Andrew Coxon. There will also be updates in each month's Binsey Link. We intend to replace the pews with a more versatile form of seating, so, if anybody would like one (or more!), please let Hilary or Andrew know. While a donation to the church would be most welcome, the only real condition is that whoever would like one would have to arrange their own transport.

From Tricia Rogers: As many will know, I am now in Kendal and Minister for the three Kendal town Methodist churches. Our God is a God full of surprises! 'Out of the blue' I received a call from Richard Teal to come and help out. I could never have imagined coming to Kendal, let alone being a Methodist Minister. Here for a year. It wasn't an immediate yes, but after prayer and a bit of time it all became clearer to me and the Methodists here. It is really only in Cumbria that something like this could have happened in this way. We really do live in a visionary Diocese as we go forward ecumenically with Mission Communities. I think and pray for you often, as you too go forward with the vision God has given you. My new address is 7 Bramble Close, Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 6FF. 01539 720513. Here for a year, do come and visit.

Skiddaw U3A: Retired or semi-retired and want to stay active, learn new things and make new friends? Skiddaw U3A is having its Open Morning on Wednesday 18th September from 10am to 12.30pm in Southey Street Methodist Hall. Here, you will be able to find out details of the 50+ activities on offer and how to sign up to groups. You can also visit our website www.skiddawu3a.co.uk or contact Debbie Morgan on 017687 8010. Our next monthly meeting in October will be held in Crosthwaite Parish Rooms on Wednesday 16th October, when the guest speaker will be Prof. Doug Thompson who will be talking about "Australian art". All meetings begin at 10am for coffee and 10.30am for the talk. Surplus Apple Scheme We are collecting apples for pressing again this year and would welcome donations of any excess good quality apples either picked or good windfalls, of all varieties, that you can give to us. We then take them to the press, collect the bottled juice and label it for sale in aid of the Northern Fells Group at various outlets in the area. Apples can be brought to the Old Rectory in Caldbeck from 1st to 30th September, but we reserve the right to stop the scheme if we are overwhelmed, as indeed we were last year. We are an apple juicing scheme for charity, so please do not bring us bruised apples or ones that have been raked off the ground, as we cannot use them and then have to take them as garden refuse to the recycling centre in Wigton. If you need any help with transporting apples, please contact your Village Agent or let us know. Tim & Anne Cartmell, 016974 78484. Women’s Institute News

Bassenthwaite W.I. Nathan Studholme, a mobile farrier, engaged members of Bassenthwaite W.I. at their July meeting. The highly skilled craft of the farrier is a combination of some blacksmith’s skills with some veterinarian skills to care for horses’ feet. In England, Scotland and Wales all people who shoe horses are required to be registered and in order to qualify for registration must complete an “Approved Apprenticeship” and pass a prescribed examination. Nathan showed us a variety of horseshoes some with studs or caulks, protrusions at the toe or heel of a horseshoe to provide additional traction, some with an extra bar on the back of the shoe which allows for more support and a heart bar shoe typically used for horses with laminitis (inflammation in the lower leg of a horse). Wearing horseshoes does not stop the hoof growing and it will need regular trimming to keep the horse comfortable. Nathan was thanked for a most interesting and informative evening. The competition for ‘something horsey’ was won by Heather and displaying most ‘horsey knowledge’ in the quiz were Mary and Daphne. In August a small group of members visited Lowther Castle and gardens. An exhibition telling the history of Lowther Castle and the family who built it was very detailed and interesting. At our 12th September meeting, in Bassenthwaite Parish Room, Martin Hodgson will be talking about and demonstrating self-defence. The competition will be ‘an autumn fruit’. As always, we welcome new members and guests. Bothel and Kirkland W.I. were pleased to welcome a new member! Planning for the summer outing to Dalemain was discussed. Maggie Bell then welcomed Pat Hill. Pat had kindly stepped in for Pat Martin who was indisposed. One of three Pats at the Helena Thompson Museum, they have a wealth of knowledge of many historical subjects. At short notice Pat Hill gave a talk on the Suffragettes. Pat outlined the difference between the suffragettes and the suffragists. The changes in the life of women can be put down to WW1. The way that women stepped in to take over many manual jobs, due to the loss of so many men in the war, was the beginning of the change in the way women were treated. Wages were still below that of the men, but women continued to show their ability, it would still be many years before they were able to have the vote! Maggie thanked Pat for her interesting talk. The competition and the raffle were both won by Betty Earle. The September 4th meeting has Johanna Korndorfer talking on “Dark Skies Roadshow.” Visitors are always welcome!

Embleton W.I. meeting on Wednesday 10 July 2019. We opened our July meeting by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to celebrate the 90th birthday of Myrtle Hind. Andrea Cameron reported on the AGM of the National Federation of W.I.s in Bournemouth on 4-5 June. Resolutions against the decline in local bus services over the last decade and to raise awareness of the importance of attending routine cervical screening were passed by majorities of over 95%. Our speaker was Annie Mawson MBE, a freelance musician and the founder and chief executive of Sunbeams Music Trust which she set up in 1992. “To relieve sickness and assist in the remedial treatment of children and adults suffering from physical, emotional, psychological and other mental health problems by the provision of Community Music Therapy.” Sunbeams, has its own centre near Penrith, provides all its services free of charge and has to raise running costs of £400,000 p.a. Amanda Durkan, thanked Annie on behalf of all the members for a moving and inspiring evening. The competition for a Sunbeam flower arrangement was won by Evelyn Chester, Chrissie Veitch was second. On the 11th September, Frances Dryden will be talking about Riding for the Disabled. Meetings are held at 7.30pm at the village hall on the second Wednesday of each month. We are always pleased to welcome guests and new members; please get in touch with our secretary Joanna South 01900 828110 for more information. Uldale and Ireby W.I. We have had a busy summer. In June, 27 of us had a very nice meal at the Craggs and then in July we had our normal meeting. Elspeth Alexander had prepared her report from the National AGM and this was put out for members to read. Calendar orders were taken and information about a Cracker Packers exhibition at Bassenthwaite was given out. A card from Betty Skelton was read out thanking members for the card and flowers she had recently received. After the business meeting we were given an interesting talk about the history of quilting by former member Sue Hinde. She had done a lot of research and told us about such quilts as log cabin work and the connection with escaping slaves. She brought some lovely examples of her own quilts and also looked at quilts belonging to various members. The vote of thanks was given by Janice Havelock. We ended the evening with a delicious supper provided by the hostesses, Susan Little and Mary Ritson. The competition for a pin cushion was won by Elizabeth Gill, with Jacqui Spanton coming second.

Bassenthwaite and Isel Mothers' Union meet in Bassenthwaite Methodist Chapel at 2pm Tuesday 3rd September for Holy Communion Service led by Rev. Clare Spedding. Also, there will be a stall of M.U. literature.

Parish Council News

Bassenthwaite Parish Council - Meeting 1st August 2019. Potholes around the village had been repaired but there were still a lot to do, especially at Park Wood. The sign at the top of Park Wood is damaged. Clerk to ask highways re the inoperative Bass Chapel and church wind turbine signs. Ideas to enhance the ‘Bassenthwaite’ sign at the Parish Room were discussed and it was agreed to ask the parish room committee for suggestions/ideas to improve the appearance of the sign. Prices were received to replace the wooden swings; £5000 plus vat for a 3-swing frame and £3500 plus vat for a two-swing frame. A price to replace the beam on the old swings had yet to be received. A complaint about sheep droppings on the village green was discussed. It was agreed that Bassenthwaite was a farming village, there were fields on either side of the village green and farmers needed to move their livestock, so this was a feature of living in a farming community. For the full August minutes please contact the clerk or see www.bassenthwaite.org.uk. If interested, have a chat with the Clerk. From the June Meeting - Recycling and Refuse Collections: Let’s give Allerdale a chance to rectify the situation and I note that the letters that we have all received from the Council not only come from the leader of the Council, Marion Fitzgerald, but also carry the number of her direct phone line - 01900 702777. On three separate occasions recently, a local resident has met vehicles being driven the wrong way on the twin lane section of the local section of the pheasant dual carriageway. If you come across this please contact Cumbria Police or our Clerk or a councillor. From the July Meeting - Polish Up the Play Area – 10am Saturday 14 September. If you can help with this work please contact our Clerk, or Anne Burton, on 017687 76754. Ireby School News The annual Ireby School BBQ that took place this year once again showed Ireby School at its best. We enjoyed a wonderful sizzling afternoon with a delicious BBQ cooked by our Governors for the children, parents, community and staff. This has become a great way to celebrate another successful year at the school, wishing our Year 6 pupils well and reminiscing with past pupils, parents and grandparents. It is truly heart-warming to see the school grounds full to burst with children playing and families all enjoying themselves. Towards the end of term, the pupils made the most of being outside as much as possible. A whole school trip to Stockswood Outdoor Centre saw the pupils working together in mixed age groups making fires, toasting marshmallows and camp singing. It is one of the benefits of a small school that the pupils can interact across the whole age range and develop important skills including cooperation, understanding and maturity. The residential

trip to Edinburgh by train for the Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils was a great success and there were sad faces on the journey home! Edinburgh Castle, the Camera Obscura and Museum of Scotland were all enjoyed enormously, but I think we can agree that learning to ski at the Snowsports Centre will be remembered for a long time. It is an exciting time to think about starting a new year at school and getting ready for new learning adventures. We hope everyone has enjoyed the break and look forward to the new term.
