Preface

The biological resources include all the composition of organisms and genetic resources which possess the practical and potential values essential to human live Biological resources will be firmed competition of the nation because they will be used as fundamental sources to make highly valued products such as new lines or varieties new material and drugs As the Nagoya Protocol was adopted in 2010 and entered into force in the 12th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2014 it is expected that the competition to get biological resources will be much intensive under the rapidly changed circumstance on the access and benefic sharing of the genetic resources (ABS) Therefore each nation is investigating and clearing information of native species within its territory in order to secure its sovereignty rights over biological resources

The National Institute of Biological Resources of the Ministry of Environment has been publish-ing the lsquoFlora and Fauna of Korearsquo since 2006 to manage biological resources in comprehensive ways and to enhance national competitiveness by building up the foundation for the sovereignty over biological resources Professional research groups consisting of professors and related experts of taxonomy examined systematically a total of 12631 species for the past eight years to publish 151 volumes in both Korean and English versions and two volumes of World Monograph cover-ing 216 species This year 11 volumes of the Flora and Fauna of Korea each in Korean and English versions including 517 species of invertebrates insects vascular plants algae and fungi are addi-tionally published Flora and Fauna of Korea were the first professional records to describe all the species of the nation in a comprehensive way and they would contribute to level up the taxonomic capacity Furthermore publication of flora and fauna through identification of native species and investigation of national biota would be helpful to declare sovereignty rights over our native bio-logical resources be used as positive proof and be utilized to provide the basic information of bio-logical resources for industrial application

The National Institute of Biological Resources of the Ministry of Environment will continue to accelerate the project of the publication of the lsquoFlora and Fauna of Korearsquo Personally I would like to express my sincere appreciation for Professor Jong-Wook Lee Ms Su-Bin Lee and Dr Jin-Kyung Choi of Yeungnam University who have continuously made a lot of efforts to publish an excellent version of Korean fauna

Introduction

Family Argidae is the second largest family among Symphyta Hymenoptera and about 815 spe-cies belonging to 58 genera have been recorded as of the end of 2013 In Eastern Asia 50 species and six genera of the family have been recorded from Japan (Shinohara 2013 Hara and Shinohara 2014) About 169 species and 16 genera have been recorded from China (Wei et al 2006 Wei 2008 Zhang and Wei 2008 Yan et al 2008 Wei and Niu 2010) The fauna of Argidae in Korea has been poorly investigated and only 21 species and two genera have been recorded (Shinohara et al 2009 Paek et al 2010)

In Northeastern Asia only two genera of Arginae have been recorded Arge Schrank 1802 and Spinarge Wei 1998 Arge Schrank is the largest and most complicated genus in Argidae More than 350 species have been recognized as of 2013 Genus Arge is mainly distributed in the Holarctic and Ethiopian regions of the world (Taeger et al 2010) About 120 species have been recorded from China (Wei 1997 Wei and Wen 1997 Wei et al 2006 Nie and Wei 2008) 30 species from Japan

(Shinohara 2013 Hara and Shinohara 2014) and 20 species from South Korea (Shinohara et al 2009 Paek et al 2010) Spinarge Wei is closely related to Arge and about 11 species have been de-scribed from eastern Asia

Sterictiphora Billberg 1820 is the fifth largest genus of Argidae and about 40 species have been de-scribed (Taeger et al 2010) Among them 20 species have been reported from the East Palaearctic region and most of them were described from Japan (Takeuchi 1939 Togashi 1968) and China (Wen et al 1998) A few species were recorded from the Far East of Russia (Zhelochovtsev 1939 Mal-aise 1944) The genus was very poorly studied in Korea and only one species Sterictiphora tanoi was reported (Togashi 1997) However the survey of the Korean sawfly fauna in progress shows that species of Sterictiphora are probably not rare in Korea

Yasumatsua Togashi 1970 is a very small and unique genus of the subfamily Sterictiphorinae Two species have been described one from Japan (Togashi 1970) and another one from Taiwan China (Togashi 1990) The finding of the rare genus from Korea shows that there may be more genera and species of Argidae in Korea

Aproceros Malaise 1931 is a small genus of Sterictiphorinae and is endemic to northeastern Asia About 10 species have been described in the world (Taeger et al 2010) One species of the genus has been recorded from Korea in this book But an unrecorded species A leuocopoda Takeuchi 1939 which is an important pest of Ulmus spp And also an invasive pest for Europe is expected to be collected in future from Korea

Historical review of the family Argidae in KoreaThe taxonomic study of the Korean Argidae was initiated by Konow who reported the first two

species of Korean Argidae Arge anceps Radoszkowsky 1889 (now a synonym of Arge ustulata (Linneacute 1758)) and Arge assimilis (Radoszkowsky 1889) (now a synonym of Arge pagana (Panzer 1797)) In the following about twenty years the Korean Argidae fauna received very little attention Takeu-chi (1927 1932 1936) added Arge nipponensis Rohwer 1910 Arge captiva rufoscutellata Takeuchi 1927 Arge hasegawae Takeuchi 1927 Arge zonalis Matsumura 1911 Arge mali (Uchiyama 1906) and Arge fuscipes (Falleacuten 1808) After two years Doi (1938) added one species Arge suspicax Konow 1908 Four species Arge coeruleipennis Retzius 1783 (now a synonym of Arge enodis (Linneacute 1767)) Arge coerulescens Geoffroy in Fourcroy 1785 (now a synonym of Arge gracilicornis (Klug 1814)) Arge


metallica Klug 1834 (now transferred to Spinarge) and Arge dimidiata (Falleacuten 1808) were recorded in Takeuchi (1939) For the first time as the Korean taxonomist Kim (1963) revised Korean Argidae and 15 species including three unrecorded species Arge flavomixta (Andreacute 1881) Arge jonasi (WF Kirby 1882) and Arge similis (Snellen van Vollenhoven 1860) were reported After three years Kim

(1970) added Arge cyanocrocea (Forster 1771) and Arge fulvicornis (Mocsaacutery 1909) (now transferred to Spinarge) Zombori (1971 1974 1978) recorded three species Arge clavicornis (Fabricius 1781) Arge nigrovaginata Malaise 1931 Arge nigripes alpina (Konow 1884) One additional species Ster-ictiphora tanoi Togashi 1997 was described from Korea by Togashi (1997) Paek et al (2010) listed 19 species of the Family Argidae from Korea Recently Lee et al (2015) revised Sterictiphora from South Korea and reported 5 species including four undescribed species Wei et al (2015) reviewed the Arginae of South Korea and recorded 2 genera and 30 species including three new species The current total 40 species in 5 genera of Argidae are described from Korea in this study


Materials and Methods

We examined more than 5000 specimens of Argidae from Korea and borrowed specimens depos-ited in the following institutions Department of Biological Science Andong National University Korea Department of Biology Changwon National University Korea Department of Life Science Daejeon University Korea Department of Biology Gyeongsang National University Korea De-partment of Biology Korea University Korea Department of Biology Sungshin Womenrsquos Univer-sity Korea Faculty of Biological Science Wonkwang University Korea Department of Biology Yeungnam University Korea Department of Life Science Yonsei University Korea Department of Environmental Engineering Education Mokpo National University Korea Daehan Specimen Insti-tute Korea Faculty of Science Hokkaido University Japan (HU) Deutsches Entomologisches Insti-tut im ZALF Muumlncheberg Germany (DEI)

All photographs were obtained using an AxioCam MRc5 camera attached to a stereo microscope

(Zeiss SteREO Discovery V20 Carl Zeiss Goumlttingen Germany) processed using Axio Vision SE64 software (Carl Zeiss) and optimized with a Delta imaging system (i-solution IMT i-Solution Inc Vancouver Canada) All the materials examined are deposited in the Department of Biology Yeun-gnam University in Korea
