Say ‘No’ to Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs

Dear Student Friends,

The number of people consuming alcohol, smoking tobacco and using drugs is increasing day-by-day. Everystudent of NITC is requested to spare few minutes to go through the following information.

Studies show that students are more likely to drink, smoke and take drugs than the general population (Ref:Wikipedia.).

Many factors contribute to the above statement. Vigor of youth, sense of thrill, eagerness to explore theunknown, freedom from the parents, peer pressure, culture and social environment, elution, etc. drive thestudents to these activities.

Alcohol

Although alcohol may give you a feeling of elation and aroused senses due to a lessening of inhibitions duringthe initial period of intoxication, alcohol is a depressant. It depresses the central nervous system leading toslowed reactions, blurred vision, slurred speech, and ultimately, to unconsciousness. Alcohol progressivelyaffects different brain areas. Alcohol first affects the part of the brain that controls inhibitions. When peoplelose their inhibitions, they may talk more/keep silent, get rowdy, do foolish things and trigger violence andcomplications. That is why the police normally lift the person who appears as drunk, when some untowardincidents happen (road accident, law and order problems, etc.). Long-term alcohol abuse will cause LiverCirrhosis; the end result of chronic liver damage.

Smoking

As with alcohol, there can be lot of social pressure for students to smoke tobacco. Smoking increases your riskof lung cancer and heart disease. It prematurely ages the skin, leads to gum disease and causes impotence.Smoking affects the near-by person also passively. Do not assume that smoking will help you through thestress of examinations. Medical evidence shows that smoking does not calm you down. It is simply thatnicotine cravings between cigarettes make you feel stressed and anxious so when you have one smoke, you feeltemporarily calm. Drugs

Use of drugs has shown to alter gene expression and brain circuitry, which in turn affect human behavior. Onceaddiction develops, these brain changes interfere with an individual’s ability to make voluntary decisions, leadingto compulsive drug craving, seeking and use.

The impact of addiction can be cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, hepatitis, and lung disease can all beaffected by drug abuse. Some of these effects occur when drugs are used at high doses or after prolonged use;however, some may occur after just one use.

Legal penalties for drug possession can be severe. Imprisonment for several years was awarded in some cases. As one becomes addicted to drugs easily which will lead to a disastrous effect on studies and health, better wewill keep this away.

If you are an alcoholic or a smoker or a drug user, this would be the ideal time to quit this habit. Make afresh start for a new way of life with a positive outlook.

Now, Say a big ‘NO’ to alcohol, tobacco and drugs.

DROWNING

Dear Student Friends,In the recent past we lost a few of young friends by drowning in the river nearby. All the cases occurred in theafternoons immediately after lunch; in almost all the cases they were found wearing thick full dresses and in onecase, mud is found in lungs. In addition, such cases of drowning of young people are being reported every dayby different newspapers. In this context the following a few paragraphs have prime relevance. Drowning is the second leading cause of death (after motor vehicle accidents) of children and youths (mainlymales). Drowning is death from asphyxia due to suffocation caused by water entering the lungs and preventingthe absorption of oxygen leading to hypoxia (a continued lack of oxygen in the brain). A person drowning isunable to shout or call for help, or seek attention, as they cannot obtain enough air. The instinctive drowningresponse is the final set of autonomic reactions in the 20 – 60 seconds before sinking underwater representingthe body’s last efforts to obtain air. The brain cannot survive long without oxygen and the continued lack ofoxygen in the blood combined with the cardiac arrest will lead to the deterioration of brain cells causing firstbrain damage and eventually brain death (the brain will die after approximately six minutes without oxygen).[Ref: Wikipedia]Never attempt swimming on a full stomach: The digestive process diverts the circulation of the bloodtoward the gut and muscles become weak. In many of the drowned cases, the stomach was seen full.Never attempt swimming while in alcohol: Use of alcohol/drug affects the coordination and power leadingto death by drowning.Never attempt Swimming where the pond/river bed is unknown: Sudden deep on the river bed pushes theperson down inside water without notice. Unevenness on the flow bed may induce whirls which may suck thevictim inside. Flash flood, under-currents, low temperature, presence of mud, slippery rock, etc. complicatesthe situation.Never attempt swimming with heavy clothing: Weight of the wet cloths matters and aggravates the problem.Never attempt swimming when you are not fit/lack skill/without warm-up: Swimming is an activitywhich needs skill, power, stamina and warm-up. Skill, physical and metal fitness are must to avoid the tragedy.Never attempt swimming under peer pressure: Remember, friends can not compensate the loss of aprecious life.

So please think twice before you step in to water.
