From the Editorial’s Desk

Warm Greeting to the readers of Innovision 2020-21!!

There is no Elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.

-Zig Ziglar

We have dreams, goals, ambitions, visions and missions to accomplish in life. Some choose shortcuts in

accomplishing these, whereas others look for the roads less travelled (the long roads) to achieve it. Be

consistent, positive and try rewarding yourself for each successful step you take towards your goal. That

will keep you motivated. Take one small victory at a time and keep climbing. The staircase will teach you

the value of journey and the lessons in your progress. Climbing stairs can be tiring and at times tedious

but it is the way you sustain the very things you are dreaming of attaining.

Presenting each annual magazine is a dream of our Polytechnic. Each issue of the „Innovision” is actually

a milestone that marks our growth, presents various activities and creative talent of our students,

highlighting their success and achievements.

Our institute is one of the self financed Polytechnics in the Mumbai subregion to get all all the Four

eligible Diploma Programmes accredited by NBA, New Delhi for a period of Three years w.e.f.

19/03/2004. Presently all the Diploma Programmes are Re-accredited by NBA, New Delhi, i.e. IE / IS

valid upto 30/06/2019 and CO/EP/IF valid upto 30/06/2023. Annual magazine, „Innovision 2020-

21‟is a reflection of achievements of staff and students in the pandemic year. Online and offline activities

throughout the year are captured in this volume with sincere efforts. . It is my great honour to present the

prestigious volume 'Innovision 20-21‟. Let me place on record my gratitude to Principal Dr. D. K. Nayak

for his continuous motivation that kept us going.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all committee members, team of Perfect Prints who

contributed to the success of the „Innovision 2020-21‟.

Best Regards

Dr. Mrs. Geetali S. Ingawale

Post Pandemic Roadmap

“Prosperous, healthy and well governed communities can tackle public health

emergencies well. Happiness is the new rich, inner peace is the new success, health is the new wealth

and kindness is the new cool”.

Dear Reader,

It gives me pleasure to place before you the Innovision of this Academic Year 2020-21. The year was

quite challenging with restrictions on most of the normal activities. Teaching learning, assessments

transformed in to online mode, many students had to face hardships of connectivity and lost precious

contact with faculty, for no fault of theirs. We are happy to record that, even with limited training,

majority of students performed well in Institute as well as the MSBTE exams. The pandemic impact is yet

to be over and by exercising caution as it is the need of the moment to accelerate the learning and skill

development pace. I appreciate the faculty and students, who are well versed with latest tools, got

acquainted soon, from whichever location they are, so as to complete the teaching learning activities.

Polytechnic, in its part helped all the students by providing the Book bank books in both the semesters.

This must have helped the students to overcome online fatigue. In addition to academics, expert sessions,

online conferences and other events, must have kept the students busy in the otherwise difficult period.

This, once in a lifetime experience must have taught every one of us about how precious our health is and

the importance of taking its care during fast spread and the times when health care experienced extreme

stress. My heartfelt feelings with all those who lost their battle during the pandemic and frontline doctors

and other support staff who went beyond the call of their duty to help the affected.

During pandemic, most people including the elite, experienced different forms of frugality, simplicity,

dignity associated with personal labor. There can be a brighter version of how things can be, converse

creativity with future from an altered present. Let‟s begin with an optimistic note how we shall emerge

better from the calamity. As the things appear improving, our country can bank on following abundance

and visualize promising future.

India has access to enormous solar energy and large network of water bodies, Rich biodiversity of flora

and fauna, spiritual and good health practices from Yoga to meditation, temples and prayer places. Our

country can lean on world‟s largest working population, affordable health care system, good and effective

education & skill development system, digital infrastructure, mobile /smart Contacts and internet facility

for masses etc. Due to uninterrupted availability of most of these facilities, essential commodities,

electricity and water supply, during pandemic made the solitary confinement to homes not stressful.

Country and people shall emerge from the crisis together. Let us boldly redefine prosperity and redirect

resources to make effective abundance and convert this planet into a healthy place to live.

Let us remember that, no amount of money can buy a life. No guilt or regret can change the past.

We can‟t always be happy. We can‟t always be right. But, we can always live each day and make

things count. Happiness is always a choice. You can‟t wait for circumstances to get better. You have

to create your own good fortune. So, look for ways to be happy every day for a better tomorrow.

Season‟s Greetings,

Dr. D. K. Nayak

Mosquito Repellent Polyester

Protective textile

Applying mosquito repellents on skin is effective but can cause skin allergies. Why not

incorporate mosquito repellents in textiles?

Javed Sheikh and Ankit Singh at IIT Delhi soon realised that the widely-used repellent DEET or

N, N-diethyl-3-methyl benzamide is removed by washing. So why not attach mosquito

repellents to dyes?

The team selected ethyl anthranilate, a highly volatile mosquito repellent, and coumarins,

multifunctional mosquito repellents. These compounds, combined separated with a base of

DEET, were synthesised into two dyes and applied to polyester fabric. Ankit Singh then

wrapped his arms with undyed and dyed fabric and shoved them into a mosquitofilled cage.

Polyester dyed with coumarins showed 97% mosquito repellency. Polyester dyed with ethyl

anthranilate showed 100%. A little dye is effective due to the synergistic effect of the two

repellents.

Polyester fabric only treated with DEET showed negligible mosquito repellence after just five

washes. But with the dye, it retained activity even after twenty washes.

„Combining the repellents increased repellence while reducing the doses needed,‟ says Javed

Sheikh.

The dyes also have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant properties which make them good

candidates for the textile industry.

Covid-19 Suveillance

(Wastewater-Based Epidemiology)

Quantifying viral genes in wastewater is an efficient and economical approach to monitor

infections and community outbreaks in large cities. Recently, scientists from the Indian Institute

of Chemical Technology and the centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology came together to

assess waste water based surveillance for COVID-19 infection in Hyderabad city.

They collected sewage samples from all the major sewage treatment plants of Hyderabad for a

month during July-August 2020. And they tested the samples using RT-PCR. An infected

person can shed viral materials through faeces for upto 47 days. From viral RNA copies in the

samples we used the estimates to calculate the number of infected people in the active phase of

infection, says Hemalatha Manupati, CSIR-IICT.As per their calculation, infected people in

the city could have been between 30,000 and 30 lakhs. „The large scale waste water based

monitoring is effective for screening the intensity of infections only in large cities,‟says Rakesh

Mishra, CSIR-CCMB, Hyderabad. A previous study showed that about 500 positive cases out

of 10,000 persons are required for detecting the COVID-19 virus in wastewater. Focused research to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of the method is necessary to relate viral

genome count and the prevalence of COVID-19 infection

Rainwater Harvesting

Case study of village school Children in a school in Berambadi village, Karnataka were facing a water crisis. Supply from a nearby

borewell depended on erratic electricity supply. Meanwhile, most annual rainfall went waste as surface

runoff.

Researchers from the Ashoka Trust and IISC Bengaluru collaborated with researchers in the UK to try

harvesting rainwater there. The team estimated water demand, using flow meters at washbasins, kitchens,

toilets, etc. This provided the clue for the volume of containers to store rainwater. Accordingly, the team constructed surface and underground tanks.

They created slopes on roofs to direct rainwater to drain towards the outlet. And before the rainy season,

they ensured clean roofs.

A metal mesh at the outlet plumbing prevented leaves and debris from entering storage containers. To

monitor water levels, the researchers installed a water level indicator. After the rains, the water quality was

tested. It was good. But over time, microbial contaminants increased. So the researchers, used sodium

hypochlorite, a low-cost way to chlorinate water. Regularly disinfecting the stored water made it safer.

The rainwater harvesting system reduced pressure on the existing water supply by up to 25% and assured

water around the clock.

The Berambadi model can be emulated elsewhere to keep children safe from water-borne diseases. It will

also ensure better sanitation in schools.

Exotic Tree Plantation

Impact on local biodiversity Exotic tree species are popular in managed forests because they have commercial or ornamental value and are easy to

maintain. But, how do they affect local biodiversity?

Recently, Kiran Choudaj and Varsha Wankhade, from the Savitribai Phule Pune University, investigated the impact

on local avian and plant biodiversity. They identified 16 sampling sites across five hills in and around Pune. Six had

natural savanna vegetation, and ten had exotic plantations. The team also sampled bird and plant species diversity at

the sites. Plantation sites had higher tree density but were lower in plant species diversity. „The plantation reduced the

growth of small shrubs and ground level plants,‟ says Kiran Choudaj.

The researchers found 86 different bird species in the savanna vegetation sites-some very specialised in their feeding

habits. Exotic plantation sites had only 38 species – less than half the number. Most were omnivores. More than half

the area of these hills is under exotic vegetation now. „Losing natural savanna vegetation implies losing a lot of plant

and avian biodiversity. Savannas take over a century to recover,‟ says Varsha Wankhade.

The biodiversity of the hills in Pune supports the larger ecosystem there. Public awareness and policy change in

forestry practices can help protect local biodiversity.

Plant Microbial Fuel Cells

Wastewater treatment

Domestic wastewater has high amounts of chemical energy which can be converted to

electricity using microbial fuel cells. And, in the process, the water is cleaned, without

operationally expensive water treatment. The redox gradient necessary to produce electricity

is maintained by connecting an anaerobic system to an aerobic system. This interface is

naturally seen in wetlands. So, why not construct a wetland system of microbial fuel cells?

Somil Thakur and Bhaskar Das from the Vellore Institute of Technology realised that a single

stage microbial fuel cell becomes less productive in time, especially for high strength

wastewater. So they incorporated a two-stage microbial fuel cell in a constructed wetland.

For fuel cells, they used two PVC pipes, each about half a metre long, with separate anode and

cathode zones. Graphite plates acted as electrodes.

The fuel cells were connected such that effluent from the first stage enters the second stage as

influent in the upward direction.

Actively digesting semi-dry sludge from a water treatment plant was inoculated into the anodic

zone to acclimatise the system. The cathodes were kept in the open air for channeling oxygen

diffusion and were separated from the anodes by layers of sand and gravel. Glasswool was

used to stop the intermixing of filter media between anode and cathode zones.

In the constructed wetland, the researchers used Canna indica, a plant with a well-developed

root system that helps create an aerobic environment, to maintain the redox gradient. The

species is tolerant to saline environments.

The researchers estimated the system‟s performance based on energy recovery and pollutant

removal efficiency at both stages. In the first stage electricity generation declined due to

organic loading and blockage of filters. But the chemical oxygen demand was reduced

considerably. The second stage received organic matter in mostly dissolved form and provided

more consistent electricity.

Interestingly, biofilm formation improved electricity flow. Optimising wastewater flow as per

substrate concentration and de-clogging filters are the challenges remaining to upscale and

make the system sustainable.

Report On Polyspark 2021

Mrs. Gautami Pujare, Cultural Incharge 2020-21

Annual Cultural Event- Polyspark is a much awaited event for students and teachers every year, it gives

opportunity to interact freely with each other. It provides an ideal platform for stars of VPM‟s Polytechnic

to shine and all extracurricular talents to blossom. It was a fun filled learning experience where each

individual is a part of the team. The event is organized with the objective of developing academic and

cultural talents of the students, improving their capabilities to work as a team and raising their level of

self-confidence in interacting with fellow students and peers.

In this year 2020-21, while the pandemic cut off our ability to gather on-ground, the desire to meet up did

not stop. And the best alternative we could find was the Virtual Platform (MS Teams in our case). So, we

decided to conduct this year‟s cultural event online. We found this as an opportunity to organise technical

events like Coding, Technical Poster Making Competition, Ideathon and Technical Quiz and to our

surprise there was an overwhelming response from both faculty members and students. Also, we

organised Staff Ludo and Talent Showcase event for our dear faculty members so that they can show us

there artistic side and keep a child in them alive. Staff members have encouraged the students by all

possible ways and played important role of judges for each and every event

The annual cultural event began on 14th

of May 2021 with a drawing competition where students exposed

their artistic talent through vibrant and colourful artworks in given time. Artworks done by students were

so great that the judges had a tough time choosing a winner. Drawing competition was succeeded by a

technical quiz where students with technical affinity competed against each other on online quiz platform

kahoot and three winners were announced on the basis of points they gained in three rounds of quiz.

Coding event was next on the chart where coding enthusiasts participated in great numbers. This event

was held in two rounds and three winners were picked on the basis of code they wrote for a given

problem statement. Last but not least, the day came to an end with Ideathon which was a business ideas

competition where a team of students presented their innovative business ideas in front of a panel of staff

members.

Day two, 15th May 2021, started with a dance competition. The dancers compelled the audience to tap

their feet on the rhythmic songs and movements during the event. Then the program continued with a

singing competition in which participants delighted the audience with their melodious singing. It was

followed by Instrumental Competition. Participants soulfully played their instruments, soothing and

mesmerising the audience with its melody. Later in the Talent Show case event, students showcased their

various talents like beatboxing, stand-up comedy. Students displayed the glory and glamour of Indian

culture at My Tradition My Pride Competition. Then the event was concluded by showing all entries for

Rangoli and Technical Poster Competition.

Day 3, 16th May 2021, Gaming day, students showcased their gaming skills through Valorant, Ludo and

Chess Competition. Students participated in large numbers for all gaming activities. Each round meant

elimination for one of the opponents, but the game continued with high spirits and cheering for those who

were playing well. A Ludo competition was also held for staff members which was really a fun and stress

buster for staff. Students and staff members enjoyed a lot in all the gaming activities. Then faculty‟s

performances mesmerised the audience. At the end of the day all Winners of the competitions were

declared. And a three day cultural event came to an end refreshing everyone with positive energy and joy.

With the cooperation of a bunch of motivated individuals who believe that a college should have its equal

share in fun and frolic along with the technical studies, the cultural event was a grand success.

Report - The Vigilance of the youth saved the lives of 30 residents

It was 23

rd December 2020 around 8pm, when Pravin Pundalik Patil, student of Advance Diploma in

Industrial Safety (A.Y.2020-21), witnessed that the LPG Gas Container overturned at Chirner Dighati

Road, Uran, Raigad which was just 50 feet away from him. He immediately rushed to the container,

made sure that he driver is alive and the container is filled with LPG Gas. Without any further delay he

went to the residential area which was approx. 10 feet away from the accident spot and turned of LPG gas

connections as well as Electric supply. He disconnected the Battery connection available in that tanker

and made sure that it would not get any kind of ignition source. He then shifted the men in the house to

Page 77: INNOVISION 2020-2021

Page 75

800 meters and completely shut off electric supply. The driver was then taken out with the help of his

colleagues and shifted to a nearby hospital. To control the traffic on the road, he informed Panvel Police

Station and called Fire Brigade as a precautionary measure. BPCL and HPCL Experts were informed

about the incident. In the meantime, they started cooling it by watering it and making sure that it would

not catch any kind of fire. Finally after 5 hours, BPCL‟s Emergency Response Team arrived at incident

site. They were sprinkling water on the tanker to cool it down. The Emergency Response Team of BPCL

arrived. They extracted the gas into another container. The situation was under control after 15 hours of

struggle.

Pravin Patil has not only done a splendid job on humanity ground, but also exhibited great level of

maturity to handle such emergencies. His work was also recognized by leading Marathi News

Channel ABP Maza.

A Tale of Two Habitats

Indian rock agama

Maria Thaker and her group at IISc Bengaluru were surprised to notice a size difference between

between rural and urban specimens of the South Indian rock agama. Psammophilus dorsalis.

To verify and quantity the phenotypic changes, Shashank Balakrishna and Madhura Sham

Ambekar went lizard catching in the Bengaluru suburbs and on the nearby Antharagange forest

ranges.

They measured d120 lizards. Urban agamas were indeed bigger than village cousins.

„There is also a difference in limb sizes,‟ says Shashank. Urban lizards had shorter limbs, which

could potentially help them manoeuvre tight spaces.

Bigger size and shorter limbs make the lizards susceptible to predation. Especially the males that

are coloured bright yellowish orange and tend to climb conspicuously atop rocks.

„More tail injuries to city agamas suggested that they face greater predation,‟ says Madhura S.

Ambekar.

But this hypothesis needed to be tested. So, the group made dummy lizards replicating rock agama

colours. During breeding season, male agamas show different colour patterns involving yellow red

and black when they notice females or are aggressive to other males.

The researchers placed dummy lizards at both locations. Urban male dummies were attacked most.

„Apart from predators, city lizards also face human disturbances,‟ says Maria Thaker, pointing out

other selection pressures.

The lizard is a curiosity. From a sand-loving genus (Psammophilus) emerges a species that inhabit

rocky outgrowths. The colours on the dorsal side (dorsalis) serve multiple purposes, from social

communication to thermoregulation and reducing predator attention. And now the phenotype is

adapted to city life, full of vertical walls.

WIT AND WISDOM – Willie Nelson

Never argue with someone who believes their own lies.

Standing alone does not mean I am alone. It means I am strong enough to handle things all by

myself.

The truth does not cost anything, but a lie could cost you everything.

Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.
