On May 28, St. Johns Country Day School celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2016. The Class of 2016 represents the school’s 61st graduating class and brings our total alumni to 2,091. As I look through this year’s graduation photos, I am reminded that Dr. Heinrich believed that traditions give students a sense of pride and belonging. One tradition that began with the seven members of the Class of 1956 and has continued ever since is the splendor of white dresses and dinner jackets worn by our grad-uates. This unique tradition provides a common link to all those graduates who have come before. As alumni, we each remember our own graduation and are linked to the past through this tradition. You might recognize your new head-master, above, in his own white dinner jacket at his graduation in 1987.

While the focus of the commencement ceremony remains a celebration of the graduating class, grad-uation at St. Johns also gives us the opportunity to celebrate our faculty. At graduation, our faculty members have the opportunity to view outcomes of their life’s work and to honor those cherished mem-bers who came before them and who have made St. Johns such a special place.

As you look through this edition of FYI, you will see the graduation awards with names like Captain Borries, Carol Hart, and Roddey R. Fisher. To many, these names represent an athletic award, a math award, and a service award. To alumni, includ-ing me, these names represent a member of the National Football Hall of Fame, a Texas Instruments National Teacher of the Year, and the Heart of St. Johns, respectively. More importantly, these names represent models of our St. Johns fac-ulty who have been changing students’ lives for 63 years.

In addition to the cele-bration of graduation, I hope this edition of FYI is also a reminder that we at St. Johns do not believe our work is complete when our students walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, but rather when alumni have pursued their

life’s passion and achieved their goals. We are proud to share these stories of entrepreneurship and innovation and hope they serve as examples each day to our current and future students of the rewards their hard work will produce as we teach them to “honor those who came before them.”

The Baccalaureate for the Class of 2016, held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church

on Friday, May 27, 2016, was a beautiful service. The Honorable Scott Makar, who

delivered the Baccalaureate Address, encouraged seniors to strive for “the joyous

freedoms that come from pursuing a righteous life.”

After Baccalaureate, a senior reception allowed families to enjoy conversation and

hors d’oeuvres. Attendees also enjoyed a slideshow in celebration of the Class of

2016 as well as a video of “advice” from seniors’ Grade 1 Buddies.

Do everything.

Become Anything.

By Gayle Garrison, Director of Alumni Relations

Do everything. Become anything. In just four words, this statement explains so much about the St. Johns experi-ence. From those who graduated decades ago to those who graduated just months ago, our alumni consis-tently credit the breadth of opportunities that St. Johns provides with helping them become the people they are today. At St. Johns, students are encouraged to do everything. Sometimes that means failure. Sometimes it means success. Try a new sport, try out for the play, try your hand at ceramics, try for a leadership role, try a new language, try to get published, try to make a car that will propel down the hallway. Through each attempt, our students become confident to try new ventures. Here are the stories of some of our alumni who have continued that innovative and entrepreneur-ial spirit. From the early stages of a great idea to a local business run by blood, sweat, and sometimes tears, to multinational businesses, their stories reflect the inge-nuity, determination, and dedication that was fostered by their teachers and coaches at St. Johns.

Rob Kuhling When reflecting on his time at St. Johns and where life has taken him since then, Rob Kuhling ‘66, says that the first word that comes to his mind is gratitude. Although he has moved all the way across the country, he has stayed connected to his alma mater and his

classmates. In fact, instead of having t h e i r 5 0 t h h i g h school reunion in Florida, Rob is part of the team organiz-ing the class of 1966 gathering in Carmel, California. Rob, a s u c c e s s f u l ve n -ture capitalist today, loved the small family atmosphere of St. Johns and the “fel-lowship of the small

group. It is very special to know well everyone in your high school class.” He clearly remembers Dr. Heinrich as an inspirational and demanding teacher and leader who challenged the students to aspire to be more than they were.

Rob was a strong student who was not afraid to take challenging courses. He was on the soccer team and also had a poem about the evils of seasonal allergies (which he says he still suffers from) published in one of the first Afterthought literary magazines ever pro-duced at St. Johns. When thinking about the influence that St. Johns had on him becoming an entrepreneur,

16

Page 17: Innovators Of Tomorrow - Best Day Schools Near … year’s graduation photos, ... Zachary Randall Carter * ... Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Rob said, “Latin helped me under-stand the language of technology and language in general. Physics, chemistry, and biology helped me to understand the basics of many of the technologies I would eventu-ally invest in.”

After St. Johns, Rob gradu-ated with honors from Hamilton College in New York. He worked for a few years in Jacksonville, mostly in commercial real estate development, before going back to graduate school. He went on to earn an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School in 1980. After graduating from Harvard, he worked for Boston Consulting Group managing teams of consultants developing business strategies for U.S. and interna-tional corporations specializing in high tech assignments. In the mid-1980s, he worked for a subsidiary of General Electric in research and product development, marketing and sales of electronic engineering and design products. He moved from there to be the director of the design automation market-ing group at Sun Microsystems where he started and managed the company’s entry into the design engineering markets.

In 1987, he became a founding partner of Onset Ventures. He says that he “never sought to start a company, but I sought to be deeply involved in the business of technology which eventually led me to start, with partners, the venture capital company to invest in and assist other entrepreneurs.” So you could say that he is an innovative entrepreneur helping

other innovative entrepreneurs. He invests in medical device and IT companies and has become par-ticularly adept at bringing medical devices to market. He feels pride and a sense of accomplishment when the companies that he works with succeed, “It’s like watching your kids succeed,” he says.

One word of advice that he has for current students who are inter-ested in becoming an entrepreneur is to value their education and finish college first. “Just because Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg succeeded as drop outs doesn’t mean that you can.” Rob lives in Palo Alto, California with wife Michelle.

Ricky CaplinRicky Caplin ‘00 was a “lifer” at St. Johns and took full advan-tage of everything that St. Johns had to offer. He excelled in some of the most challenging courses offered, played basketball and tennis, had a role in nearly every Drama Department production, was in St. Johns Singers. Outside of St. Johns, he played tourna-ment table tennis, placing 3rd in the nation. His teachers credit his Herculean work ethic for his suc-cess in and out of the classroom. He was described by his English teacher as a “very gifted student who translated his insight and ideas into crisp, lucid, and efficient prose.” According to Ricky, part of what makes a great entrepreneur is “being able to tell a compelling story both in person and in writing.” He credits his teachers, especially

Leslie (Ritch) DeStefano, Sam Cox, Anita Snell, Brenda Scott, and Joe Warner, with teaching him how to eloquently express himself to others both verbally and in writing. He believes that the encourage-ment from his teachers and other students helped spur him and his classmates on to greatness. One of his fondest memories from his time at St. Johns is of playing basketball at home in the Brown Gym against Bolles. The St. Johns community packed the gym and cheered them on to a hard fought victory over the rival school.

After graduating from St. Johns Summa Cum Laude, he breezed through his freshman year at the University of Florida, “not because I am a genius, but because St. Johns had me so well prepared.” He went

on to receive a Master’s Degree from the University of Florida and then had a successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. But the entrepreneurial spirit within him was not content, and so he and his brother-in-law started HCI Group, a healthcare IT company.

17

Page 18: Innovators Of Tomorrow - Best Day Schools Near … year’s graduation photos, ... Zachary Randall Carter * ... Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

The company has seen remarkable growth and suc-cess since it began six years ago. It was ranked as the number one privately-held company in Florida and the number three privately held healthcare company in the United States by Inc. Magazine. HCI Group dou-bled its year-over-year growth in 2014 and is on pace to beat that record this year. Ricky was awarded the Ernst and Young 2015 Florida Entrepreneur of the Year Award, was named a “40 under 40” by the Jacksonville Business Journal, and is well known for his philan-thropy and public service ventures.

By all indications, Ricky and HCI Group show no signs of slowing down. Ricky’s advice to current stu-dents echoes what the faculty and administration of St. Johns try to instill in them; “Do everything and keep your options open...you learn this at St. Johns...Learn to fail quickly and then do things differently.” Ricky lives in Mandarin with his wife Danielle and two children.

Savannah Poole DiEugenio“95% of entrepreneurialism is perseverance” says Savannah Poole DiEugenio ‘02 who, along with her husband, is in the early stages of a business sell-ing natural rubber baby teething toys in the shape of college and professional team mascots. This entre-preneurial journey is already testing her perseverance.

Savannah was also a lifer at St. Johns and remembers fondly the feeling of being known and loved through-out her years. “St. Johns felt like an extension of my family. From kindergarten to graduation, I could count on the same group of friends to be traveling alongside

me.” Savannah was a well-rounded student who took advantage of the arts, athletics, and service opportu-nities at St. Johns. Some of her favorite memories are of playing golf and girls basketball, even though the basketball team only won a few games in the five years

that she played. The perseverance required for playing hard, loss after loss, and keeping a positive attitude helped give her a grit and determination that has been useful in her recent endeavor.

After graduating from St. Johns, Savannah went on to the University of North Florida where she earned a degree in Business Management and then com-pleted her MBA. After college, she completed her pilot’s license and went into a career in aviation. She worked for Raytheon training air traffic controllers, and then “landed what I thought was my dream job selling private business jets” she said. But after working in brokerage for a while, she realized that her true pas-sion was in design and she decided to start her own decorating business. Soon after her son Penn was born, she and her husband Patrick, a Navy pilot and Penn State alumnus, were watching a Penn State foot-ball game. Penn (the son, not the school) was playing with a popular natural rubber teething toy in the shape of a giraffe. Patrick went online to look for a natural rubber teether in the shape of the Nittany Lion and when none could be found, they realized that they had found a gap in the market. They set about trying to fill that hole by coupling popularity, practicality, and nos-talgia and started their new company, Mascot Minis. They carry several popular college teams and are looking to expand to professional teams as well. While they know that they have a winning idea, the work that has gone into making this idea a reality has tested their perseverance.

Savannah says that “you don’t have to go in knowing everything about everything because you will learn so much along the way. There is no class that will prepare you for your specific direction.” She believes that St. Johns provided her with a safe environment to test and try new things that she still carries with her today. Her advice to St. Johns students who hope to become entrepreneurs is to do extensive research, test the market, and try to have other people shoot holes through every direction of your plan. Then “once you are confident it is a good idea, you need to go in believing that you can do it, and you need to commit to seeing it through. You will be knocked down, you will

entrepreneurship

18

Page 19: Innovators Of Tomorrow - Best Day Schools Near … year’s graduation photos, ... Zachary Randall Carter * ... Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

face challenges, but that commitment will propel you toward success.” She is hoping the perseverance that she developed at St. Johns will carry her through.

She and Patrick welcomed another baby boy, Marco, in February and are going to travel across the country in an RV for a while after Patrick retires from the Navy and before he starts flying with the airlines.

Aime Culton-Tveras PetersonAime Culton-Tveras Peterson ‘89 believes that stu-dents today should “find your passion and go for it, even if it is completely opposite of everything you (and everyone else) thought you were supposed to do.” Her statement is both a reflection of her own experience, and advice for the next generation. She was raised by artist parents who flourished in their passion for design, photography, toy making, sculpting, and pottery. Her father was an inventor, innovator and model maker and her mother owned a folk art business. Their determina-tion, working long into the wee hours of the night, was normal, and Aime learned early that if you own your own business, it is up to you to get the job done. As a student at St. Johns, Aime was inspired by art teachers Maryann Petska and Ann Andreu who also chaperoned an art trip to New York City, which is one of her fond-est St. Johns memories. But from a young age, Aime had wanted to be a veterinarian because of her love of all animals. Science teacher, Carol Hart, kept her passion for the sciences alive and all throughout school, Aime was dedicated to the idea of becoming a vet.

After graduating from St. Johns, she went to the University of Florida on a Pre-Veterinary track. She didn’t anticipate the emotional toll that some of her courses would take on her as she learned about the realities of animal food production. She immediately

became a vegetarian and an advocate for animal rights. Throughout this time, she went to work at a local flower shop in the mall in Gainesville and instantly loved the artistic elements of the design work. She began to dabble in weddings, set design, and event production. The choice to leave the veterinary program was a tough one, but she knew that she had found her passion. Aime now has 26 years of floral design experience, and is the owner of her own floral and special event design business. She says her proud-est moments regarding her business are the moments when she “did IT,” which she defines as clearing what-ever seemingly insurmountable hurdle that was in front of her. Her advice to students who want to become an entrepreneur, “Be a part of a struggling company as well as one that is successful, because I believe you learn more in the struggle than you do from suc-cess….You get to take credit for your successes but

be prepared to also take credit for your failures.” While her week-ends can be busy and stressful with events and weddings, her business allows her the flexibility to be involved with her children throughout the week. She sends her two children, Lilly and Luke, to St. Johns to give them “the solid education, combined with a nur-turing and uplifting environment which will give them the platform from which they can jump high into their adult life.” She has also found a way to foster her love of animals. She is an animal rescue advocate and spends much of her free time helping to save and

rescue animals. Their house is typically filled with a lot of fur covered creatures. Between owning her own business where she gets to do what she is passion-ate about, having a flexible schedule to be involved with her kids at St. Johns, and being an animal rescue advocate, Aime says she has “found a way to have my cake and eat it too!”

The 10th Annual Spartans Golf Tournament was a great success with a record 120 golfers enjoying a beautiful day at Eagle Harbor Golf Club. Through the generous support of sponsors, golfers, and donors, the St. Johns Athletic Department will benefit from over $17,000 in designated funds.

This year’s proceeds will help pay for:

• Windscreens and scoring poles for the tennis courts

• New scoreboards for the Brown Gymnasium

• Brick enclosures for the softball and soccer field scoreboards

• Speaker systems for the baseball and football fields

• Sound equipment for the crew team

• Numerous other athletic team “wish list” items

Traci Livingston, Athletic Director, thanked everyone for making the tournament such a huge success. “This wouldn’t have been possible without our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers, and we are so thankful for all of you,” Livingston said. “I can’t wait to see what next year’s turnout is like!”

The 6th Annual St. Johns Celebrates! took

place on Sunday, January 31, 2016 and was

a fun-filled day for the entire family. Through

St. Johns Celebrates! we share the very best

of St. Johns with our broader community, to

showcase how our students truly can “do every-

thing” and “become anything.” This year’s event

was no exception as choral, dance, and drama

performances took place throughout the

afternoon and soloists and chamber groups

performed in the Pace Lecture Hall. The

Kindergarten hosted games in the Lower School,

and Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 danced and sang in

French at the Chapel Oak. A cool kitchen chem-

istry demonstration had the kids making ice

cream and having a blast in the Upper School,

while Grade 4 showed Book Creator projects and

iMovie trailers across the Quad. Grade 9 hosted

a poetry slam and there were Spartan Games for

all ages in the gyms.

The 3D printing showcase helped newcomers

to the technology understand 3D printing and

its applications to daily life, and the ever-popular

Frisbee dogs jumped and flew through the air to

great applause.

The event also featured temporary tattoos,

face painting, and food trucks and the fabulous

International Food Café made another appear-

ance in the Upper School.

Spring Fling

Outstanding Alumnus of the Year 2016 Dr. Saumil Oza ‘95

The annual Alumni Spring Fling took place on Friday, April 29, 2016 on the deck at St. Johns. Just as the sun was setting, 70 alumni, family, and faculty gathered for appetizers and drinks provided by the Alumni Office. As the sun went down and the bistro lights in the trees came on, Dr. Saumil Oza ‘95 was presented with the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award for his outstanding accomplishments as a cardiologist. After the presentation, everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner, dessert, drinks, and tours of the school all while catching up with old friends.

Saumil Oza knew that he wanted to go into the medical field from a young age. As a student at St. Johns, he excelled in academics, athletics, and the arts. He was a National Merit Scholar, a member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Latin Club, Spanish Club, St.

Johns Singers, the Varsity Swim team, and the Varsity Basketball team, among many other activities.Upon graduating Summa Cum Laude from St. Johns, Saumil was admitted to an elite six-year medical school program at the University of Miami. He went on to the University of Illinois-Chicago for his residency in Internal Medicine and then moved to Loyola University for fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology.

Since then he has done amazing work at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville and was recently named Chief of Cardiology. Saumil is the co-director of the Atrial Fibrillation Institute, a comprehensive treatment facility for the medical and interventional management of atrial fibrillation. He is passionate about helping his patients live a great life after treatment by emphasizing healthy diet and exercise. Saumil also was recently recognized by the Jacksonville Business Journal as a Healthcare Hero in Cardiology. He lives in Jacksonville with his wife and young son.

Middle SchoolBy Bill Rothe, Head of Middle School

The Middle School theme this year was “Head, Heart, and Hands,” encouraging students to focus on building self-reliance through engaging academic and collaborative activities that challenged students to discover their own unique capabilities. Our theme also addressed the importance of character in Middle School by emphasizing the expec-tation of an honorable community.

Finally, Middle School life this year was filled with hands-on experiences both on and off campus, providing lasting memories to build upon as they navigate their wonderful journey in Middle School.

The Drive to Thrive permeated every aspect of Upper School student life this year. Whether in the classroom and art room, on the stage, in clubs and athletics, or in service to school and community, every Upper School student ended the year proud of a personal best. Some accom-plishments were in the public eye; others were behind the scenes. All made the 2015-2016 school year a most notable one!

Upper School classrooms buzzed with the sound of actively-engaged learners guided by skilled educators who infused lessons with tech-nology and best practices. Under their tutelage, students garnered coveted ribbons and trophies in academics, performing arts, athletics, visual arts, and more. Clearly, faculty commitment to the school’s mission and to their students pro-vided the cornerstone of the success enjoyed by this year’s Upper School.

As we pause to celebrate the Upper School’s “per-sonal bests” of 2015-2016, we already look forward to those that lie ahead next year and beyond!

Since the first St. Johns on Broadway in

1983, the show has come a long way. But

some things remain the same, including

the way the show garners the support

and involvement of the whole school.

According to Mrs. Brenda Scott, Chair of

the Performing Arts Department, “St. Johns

on Broadway is a great experience for the

kids. It’s a wonderful opportunity for them

to see what goes into a production like this,

from costumes to staging, rehearsals to the

technical components. It gives the students

a chance to shine on the stage or behind

the scenes, and they just love it.”

Innovating for a better world from the massive to the mastiff.

Bob Montgomery graduated from St. Johns in 1958 and then was the Outstanding Engineering Graduate when he graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1964. He went to work for the family business which became Montgomery Industries. His father had designed and pro-duced a patented machine for reducing wood scrap into a more consistent end product. Bob brought his expert engineer-ing and design skills to the company and holds 3 different patents for his innovative designs for the massive machines that the company produces.

Cody Vincent graduated from St. Johns in 2000 and then from the University of North Florida and is working as a Certified Public Accountant. He wasn’t planning to start a business, but an idea that he and his close friend Josh Kenning came up with is in the early stages of a small business. They designed and produced a dog walker called the Double Doggie to easily walk two dogs without getting tangled. They had a successful Kickstarter campaign to get the ball rolling and were featured at Jacksonville’s Spark Walk in 2016. The Double Doggie is cur-rently producing its first run of 5,000.

Dear St. Johns Families and Friends:

We are thrilled to report that we have just put the wraps on another fantastic year of fundraising at St. Johns. For the fifth year in a row, the St. Johns Annual Fund set a new high-water mark in total funds raised. As of today, the School has received 543 gifts totaling more than $480,000! We cannot thank you enough for the tremendous outpouring of support we received from so many of you!

We owe a great deal of thanks to our Chairs, Tanya and Bill Powers, for their outstanding leadership of the Annual Fund. Working closely with our tireless and dynamic duo in development, Amy Weaver and Michelle Kirk, they organized a terrific group of parent, trustee, and alumni volunteers who made countless phone calls and wrote personal notes urging parents from every grade as well as other members of the St. Johns community to participate in this year’s Annual Fund. These energetic volunteers were strong advocates for the school and shared a positive message about philanthropic support, resulting in increased participation by parents and alumni this year.

So what have we been doing with these funds? For starters, gifts earmarked specifically for upgrades to our baseball facilities have turned our diamond into the envy of every other baseball program in Clay County. We were able to make substantial improvements to the sound and lighting systems in the Performing Arts Center – just in time for St. Johns on Broadway. Along with the theater upgrades, we were able to purchase percussion instruments for our concert and symphonic bands. This summer, we will put the finishing touches on the much-anticipated and long-overdue upgrades to the physical education locker room project we began with funds from the 2015 Gala & Auction event. In addition, we were able to support additional travel and workshops for faculty professional development and we acquired additional technology hardware to support the expanded roll-out of the iPad program. Of course, a healthy portion of the funds were used to support day-to-day operation of the school not entirely covered by tuition.

The best investment money can buy isn’t about money. It’s about the right environment for children to learn and discover themselves, a place which opens doors for students and instills the character and confidence to walk through them. At St. Johns we accomplish this through an academic program whose challenges students are intent on meeting; teachers who understand their students and bring out their best; plentiful and accessible arts, sports, and other enriching activities that enable students to find and develop all their talents; a peaceful and safe campus with some amazing facilities; and a caring community where all are welcomed and respected. The funds you have so generously committed to our mission will be used to ensure that an investment in a St. Johns education remains the best investment a parent can make.

Please accept our most sincere thanks and appreciation for your incredible generosity this year. We hope you are enjoying a relaxing summer vacation with your family and friends.

Warm regards,

Edward M. Ellison Jonathan C. Montgomery Headmaster President, Board of Trustees

The St. Johns Annual

Fund impacts our students and teachers every day. Each time they

connect to the Internet, read a book in the library, examine something under a microscope, perform on stage, and participate in sports, the

St. Johns Annual Fund helps make it happen. Your investment in the school is important — it demon-

strates your commitment to the school and your belief in the students and faculty that make St. Johns so

special. And most of all, you set an example of generosity and support for the rest of the

St. Johns community.

SUPPORTINGAnnual FundThe

What is the Annual Fund? Each year St. Johns Country Day School seeks contributions to the Annual Fund, primarily in unrestricted gifts, to help enhance the St. Johns experience. All St. Johns constituents (parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends) are asked to consider an annual gift to ensure that St. Johns can fulfill its mission of providing a superior college preparatory program to all students.

How are contributions used?In past years the Annual Fund was a project-based fundraiser, but the Annual Fund now supports all aspects of the school’s mission. Gifts to the Annual Fund ensure that current and future St. Johns students continue to experience the fine education that this wonderful school has offered for over 60 years.

Gifts to the Annual Fund provide St. Johns with the resources to enrich the learning environment and support:

• Faculty professional development

• Curriculum and program enhancements

• Special events and activities (field trips, athletics, arts programs)

• Technology and facilities

Every gift, large and small, is important.

Our family has been a part of St. Johns for the last ten years and our St. Johns experience is more than academics. It’s the things that our son has learned beyond the classroom – such as self-discipline, responsibility, compassion, and teamwork. Plus, Jackson has gained a sense of confidence and a level of independence required for success in life. We also feel a sense of family at St. Johns with the close network of parents who share a similar goal and with teachers who put their hearts into teaching our children.

~Tanya and Bill Powers, parents

Our grandson, Shane, has attended St. Johns since Pre-Kindergarten and is now in Grade 3. He is learning so much and has had so many amaz-ing experiences at St. Johns. We can see firsthand that Shane is receiving a wonderful education. Our family is proud to support St. Johns!

~Ford and Sandy Cox, grandparents

Giving is a practicality, as well as a way to demonstrate we understand we have the privilege of being a part of something important. I like that my participation is ongoing, because on those many occasions my children demonstrate profound and visible evidence of their St. Johns education, I know I have already tangibly, and repeatedly, said “thank you.”

~Leslie Ritch, administrator/teacher and parent of alumni

Every volunteer plays an important role in the success of our school. Whether you have chaperoned a field trip, baked treats for a Lower School bake sale, made costumes for St. Johns on Broadway, cheered on the Spartans, or were involved in any way, we appreciate your efforts on behalf of the students and teachers.

Each year St. Johns recognizes one or more people who have gone above and beyond the norm as Volunteers of the Year. In May, we were delighted to recognize Barbara Sage, chair of the Spartan 5K, and Nicole Radford, chair of the PTL Spirit Store.

Supporting St. Johns Country Day School

We are truly gratified by the broad base of support St. Johns Country Day School has received from parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni parents, and friends over the years. There are many ways to support St. Johns Country Day School. Every gift is significant and helps us fulfill the school’s mission. The largest number of gifts to the school consist of cash contributions to the Annual Fund, which has been identified by the Board of Trustees as the school’s fundraising priority. Other methods of support include gifts of securities, real estate, personal property, life insurance policies, charitable trusts, and bequests.

The Annual Fund

Essential to the growth of any independent school is a robust and well-supported Annual Fund. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of each child’s education, and no independent school could charge the full cost without making itself inaccessible to all but a select few. St. Johns Country Day School uses the Annual Fund to provide the extra margin of excellence in our programs and facilities, over and above that made possible by tuition.

Our goal is full participation by the St. Johns family. Each year, parents, trustees, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends are solicited. We hope that you will support the school and our students with a gift to the Annual Fund each year.

In-Kind Donations

Donations of equipment, materials, or other valuable items for St. Johns’ classrooms, libraries, offices, or facilities are considered gifts in kind. Such donations are welcome, but acceptance of some items may be subject to usage and space constraints.

Some donors consider gifts of appreciated securities or real estate to show their support of the school and gain tax advantages at the same time.

Memorial and Honoraria Gifts

Donors may honor a relative, friend, faculty member, student, or alumnus through a special named or memorial gift to St. Johns Country Day School. Many varied opportunities exist to reflect the interests of the honoree or the donor.

Planned Gifts

Planned giving presents an opportunity for donors to structure a gift that not only provides for the future of St. Johns and our students, but also achieves a variety of personal financial objectives for the donor. Deferred gifts may include bequests, life insurance, and trusts.

Thank you for considering a gift to St. Johns County Day School. If you would like additional information about any of these giving opportunities, please contact Amy Weaver at (904) 264-9572 or [email protected]. Also, donors should consult their attorney, accountant, or financial advisor for specific tax information and assistance.

This Annual Giving Report lists those donors whose gifts were received prior to June 30, 2016. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of each listing. In case of error or omission, please accept our sincerest apologies and contact Amy Weaver ([email protected] or (904) 264-9572) so that we can correct our records.

Thank You For Your Support!
