Subject : Biology Date :
Unit : The chemistry behind responses Period :
Topic : Plant Hormones Time : 40 minutes
Curricular statements ; Develop factual ,Conceptual,Procedural,Metacoginitive knowledge,Process skills and
Attitude on Plant hormones through lecture method, group discussion and evaluation
By questioning, participating in group work and discussion
Content analysis :-
Terms ; Artificial plant hormones, Plant Hormones -Auxin,Cytokinins,Gibberllins,
Ethylene,Abscisic acid.
Facts 1) The hormones produced by the plants are called phytohormones
2) The plant hormones produced by meristematic cells located at different plant parts 3) Auxins play a major role in the dominanace of terminal buds
4) Auxin helps in the production of female flowers
5) Auxin helps in the elongation of stem cells
6) cytokinins helps in accelerating cellgrowth and cell division
7) Cytokinin prevents the droppings of flowers and leaves.
8) Gibberellin helps in the germination of seeds
9) Ethylene produced in the roots and diffuse to other parts
10) Ethylene prevents cell division
11) Ethylene causes maturation and ripening of leaves and fruit
12) Abscisic acid produced in mature leaves
13) It helps in the dormancy of seeds and buds.
Concept : -
Minor Concept 1) Plant Hormones are growth promoters.
2) Different types of plant hormones such as Auxin,Cytokinins,Gibberllins,
Ethylene,Abscisic acid are present.
Major Concept 1) Plant hormones are messengers in plants.
2)Plant hormones (also known as phytohormones) .
Learning Outcomes in terms of specification
Enables the pupil to develop
1)Factual knowledge on plant hormones through
a)Recalling the new terms like Plant Hormones -Auxin,Cytokinins,Gibberllins ,Ethylene,Abscisic acid.
b)Explaining about Plant hormones and their functions.
2)Conceptual knowledge on plant hormones through
a)Explaining about plant hormones and their functions.
3)Procedural knowledge on plant hormones through
a)Explaining about plant hormones and their functions.
4)Metacoginitive knowledge on plant hormones through
a)Describing about plant hormones and their functions.
5)Different process skills are
a)Observing about the plant hormones and their functions
b)Communicating through presenting the group work.
6)Scientific attitude towards the plant hormones and their functions
Pre-requisites : Pupil knows ,that hormone plays a key role in controlling the growth and development .
Teaching –learning resources : 1) Hand outs containing the cards showing the sources and functions of different phytohormones
2) Activity cards
3) Follow up activities

CLASS ROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE PUPIL RESPONSES
Introduction
Teacher makes a rapport with students by asking questions related to contextual
Situation.
Teacher starts a discussion on the obvious effects of human hormones and
ask questions
1)what do you know about different human hormones ? pupil says , plant also
Teacher asks students to think about differences between little boys contains hormones
and men and between little girls and women. Reinforce the concepts that
human hormones are very potent, have alot of individual jobs, and are found
in extremely small amounts. Teacher asks questions
1)How a sapling become a giant tree ?
Teacher Says,Today we are going to learn in a different approach about plant pupil says yes
Hormones.
Presentation
ACTIVITY-I
Teacher explains that there are two types of hormones in plants pupil listens carefully
They are
Growth promoters Growth inhibitors
Teacher divides the students into groups based on the hormone(card)
obtained and ask them to disscuss about it .
Group auxins
Group auxin lists out the sources and functions of hormone Group auxins list out
Sources –germinating seeds ,stem tips ,root tips ,leaves , the sources and
leaf buds functions
Functions –role in the dominance of terminal bud
Elongation of stem cells ,growth of lateral roots
Role in phototropism
Eg;
Group cytokinins
Sources –produced at the tip of roots and transport Group cytokinins
through xylem list out the
Functions-accelerating cell growth and cell division sources and functions
Germination of seeds,prevents fruit dropping
Eg :
Group gibberellins
Sources –germinating seeds
Elongation of stem cells
prevents fruit dropping
Embryo, stem and root tips Group gibberellins
Functions-germination of seeds, elongation of stem , list out the
Breaking down of stored food sources and
Sprouting of leaves functions
Group ethylene
Sources-produced in roots and diffuse to other parts
Functions –prevents cell division Group ethylene lists
Causes ripening of leaves and fruits out about it features
Group abscisic acid
Sources-produced in mature leaves and diffuse to other Parts
Functions-Prevents cell division and growth Abscisic acid lists
Causes dropping of mature leaves and fruits out their roles
Helps in leaf formation
ripening of fruits
Causes dropping of mature fruits
After that the teacher explains about each hormone .Then she gives the
activity sheets and asks them to fill it .
QUESTIONS
1) seed germination
(a) students do the
Leaves sprout
(b) activity.Then teacher
discuss the answers
Stem grows Gibberellins/ cyokinins,
gibberellins,
(c) auxins/ gibberellins,
ethylene, abscisic acid
Mature leaves
(d)
Falling of leaves
Consolidation
Causes dropping of mature fruits
Plant hormones are essential for the growth and development of plants.
ACTIVITY -II
Teacher gives the activity card and explains about it suppose
five plant hormones are placed on a round circular table
in a clockwise direction .The hormone which plays an important role
in phototropism is placed in between the cytokinins and
the hormone involved in fruit ripening. The hormone which
is a plant growth inhibitor is placed to the left of Ethylene.
The hormone which produced in the germinating seeds is placed
to the right of cytokinins .
Identify the order of placement and marked in the circle given below
Then the teacher explains the answers and asks review questions:
Pupil listens to the
answers and the
Explanations.
The answers are :
Gibberellins,cytokinins,
auxins , ethylene,
abscisic acid
