earned since the establishment of UAEU in 1976.

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is an outstanding educational institution, with an international reputation for the quality of its research and the excellence of its teaching. It is this combination that ranks us in the top 500 universities worldwide.

As a research-intensive university of international stature, UAEU works with its local and international partners to provide research solutions to challenges faced by the nation, the region and the world. The university has established research centers of strategic importance, which help advance knowledge in critical areas ranging from water resources to the treatment of cancer.

At UAEU we continuously strive to provide the best education for our students. Our academic programs are taught by internationally renowned faculty and include not only classroom theory, but also practical internships and research opportunities. We are very proud of our record in educating talented people and of the contributions that UAEU graduates have made in their chosen fields, whether here in the UAE or further afield.

In 2010, the university moved to a new state-of-the-art campus. The 80-hectare campus is a showcase of modern architecture, high-tech laboratories, specialized research centers, cutting-edge IT infrastructure and twenty-first century classroom technology. The university enrolls approximately 14,000 students from 60 countries and seeks to provide an outstanding educational experience for every student.

HISTORY AND KEY ACHIEVEMENTSThe United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has become one of the leading educational institutions in the Gulf region. It helps to drive national development by providing research solutions of strategic importance to the UAE and the wider region. UAEU was founded at the beginning of the modern era and was based upon our founder's desire to improve people's lives through research and education. Throughout our short history we have helped shape the country and region through research and the dissemination of knowledge. We are working hard to preserve our traditional heritage while continuing to innovate and pursue excellence.

1976Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahayan, the first President of the UAE, understood that the future of any nation depends upon the education of its young people. He dreamed of a national flagship university that would provide students with a world class education and supply the knowledge and the skilled workers necessary to support the national economy, while helping to solve some of the nation’s most pressing problems through research. In 1976 his dream became a reality when the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) was established.

1977In 1977 the university opened with four faculties. These were

1991The first Master’s Degree Program was established in the Faculty of Science. It was an interdisciplinary program in environmental sciences.

1998 The College of Engineering received ABET accreditation and the university established the Continuing Education Center as another means of serving the community.

1999 The College of Business and Economics received AACSB accreditation.

2000The university established the Faculty of Information Technology and the Research Affairs Unit to manage and promote scientific research.

2003

English became the language of instruction.

the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, known then as the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Business and Economics, known then as the Faculty of Administrative and Political Sciences.

1978The Faculty of Shari’ah and Law was established.

1980The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering were established.

2006UAEU was placed among the top 10 research universities in the Islamic world by the SESRTCIC, OIC Research Center and ‘Smart Classrooms’ were introduced.

2007The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences received the Hamdan Award for Best Medical College in the Arab World.

2008

UAEU was chosen by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) to be the second overseas venue for examinations in the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

2009The first Ph.D. program was established.

2010 The university moved to a new state-of-the-art campus situated in Al Ain. The 80-hectare campus is a showcase of modern architecture, high-tech laboratories, specialized research centers, cutting-edge IT infrastructure and twenty-first century classroom technology.

1981The first student cohort graduated. This included 192 male and 50 female students, some of whom now hold key leadership positions in the country.

1986The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was established to improve medical services in the UAE, to reduce dependence on expatriate physicians and to begin a research program relevant to the needs of the country. Today, the College of Medicine and Health Sciences is ranked among the top medical schools in the Middle East.

2011UAEU was ranked 338 in the QS World University rankings, the highest ranking to date. The College of IT received ABET Accreditation.

2012

Mobile learning was introduced and UAEU was ranked in the top 50 world universities that were founded within the past 50 years (QS World University Rankings).

2013University College was established. It is comprised of three units that include the University Foundation Program, the Student Academic Success Program, and the General Education Program. The college assists students with the transition from high school to university, enhances student engagement, integrates academic and co-curricular programs, connects students with resources and fosters both independent and lifelong learning.

2014

UAEU received institutional accreditation from the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

RESEARCHAs a research-intensive university, we are keen that our research is adopted for the benefit of society.

A distinctive characteristic of UAEU is its strategic collaboration through national and international academic and industrial research alliances, bringing experts from different areas together, and maximizing their potential to work towards effecting positive change.

Researchers at UAEU have made significant contributions to the UAE’s development in areas ranging from water resources, petroleum resources, solar and other forms of renewable energy, to medical advancement as well as significant social and economic contributions.

A New State-of-the-Art CampusThe new UAEU campus features modern architecture, zones for specialized research centers, cutting edge IT infrastructure and also classrooms and laboratories that feature the latest equipment and instructional technology in order to enhance student learning.

There is an expansive library offering a vast array of physical and electronic resources, two world class health clubs equipped with the latest fitness equipment, two Olympic sized swimming pools, as well as football fields, tennis, basketball and badminton courts. UAEU’s campus is a real community with multiple cafés and restaurants, retail, beauticians and banking facilities, bright, modern campus residences and exceptional athletic and recreational facilities.

A Supportive Learning EnvironmentUAEU is committed to providing the support necessary to ensure that every student can be successful. Our support services include counseling, healthcare, IT support, disability support, career services, financial aid, international student services, alumni services, a student success center and a student council. Regardless of the obstacles that you encounter along the way, there is always a mentor, a counselor or an advisor nearby to help. Each student is assigned an individual academic advisor to assist with the critical decisions and choices that you may face along the road to academic and career success.

A Home Away From HomeUAEU provides modern on-campus and off-campus housing that includes: shared and single rooms, mosques, gyms, social clubs, lounges with cable TV, kitchens, laundry rooms, internet connections and cleaning and food services. Each housing unit is assigned a Residential Life Coordinator who aims to provide a nourishing, supportive and friendly environment for all. Our diverse university accommodation offers something for everyone and provides an array of social activities, making it the ideal place to make new friends.

A Vibrant Living AtmosphereOur goal is not only to give students an excellent degree qualification but also to ensure that they have fun along the way. Student ActivitiesThe Sports and Recreational Activities Unit offers an array of activities and sports programs that include aqua aerobics, self-defense, meditation, swimming, psychological health, body energy, athletics, squash, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis, boxing, kick-boxing, chess and billiards. The Theatre and Fine Arts Unit offers music, theatrical events, art exhibitions, visual arts, photography, poetry and story writing. STUDY ABROADUAEU offers world-class study abroad programs.At UAEU many students get the chance to experience life, culture and study in another country as part of their degree. We offer students a broad range of partner universities to choose from – including some of the world’s top universities from the USA, Germany, France, Spain, South Korea, China, Switzerland, UK and Japan.

We also welcome international students from our partner institutions who add to the cultural diversity of the 60 nationalities already studying at UAEU. This offers students exciting opportunities to connect with others and grow as people. We encourage students to come here and leave with broadened horizons, lifelong friendships and connections, greater cultural sensitivity and global awareness.

Study Abroad Programs Offer Students:• The chance to obtain credit towards their

degree while studying abroad.

• The opportunity to study for up to two semesters as part of an exchange agreement.

• A waiver on tuition fees for students from the partner institutions. The student will, however, be responsible for all other expenses, including transportation, accommodation, insurance and textbooks.

• Research opportunities are also available.

DEVELOPING OUR NATIONAL TALENTUAEU is committed to developing talented and ambitious Emiratis who wish to pursue careers in academia.

The UAEU has established a National Teaching Assistant (TA) program, which provides scholarships to exceptional national candidates who have a strong desire to pursue higher education and work in academia. The scholarships provide a generous monthly salary and cover education, travel and health insurance costs throughout their Master’s and Ph.D. studies. Upon the completion of their Ph.D. studies, candidates join the university at the assistant professor level. The university has already supported more than 370 teaching assistants.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITYAs the UAE's national university, UAEU recognizes the responsibility of the university and its graduates to contribute to the well-being of the broader community.

Community engagement and social responsibility describes how we make a difference to the social and economic well-being of our communities through teaching, research, public events and activities. Here is just a snapshot of some of the initiatives undertaken by the university.

Free Legal Advice ClinicThe College of Law established a legal clinic that has the dual purpose of training students while offering free legal consultations to the broader UAE community.

Fundraising for Charities at Home and AbroadEvery year UAEU holds a series of fundraising events to raise money for those less fortunate. This includes countries that have been affected by war and natural disasters, as well as other

to local schools through various initiatives such as establishing a school garden manual to promote healthy eating, hosting summer programs such as ‘Sayfuna Mumayez’, with a focus on teaching English, ICDL, web design, robotics and social media. In addition UAEU hosts annual school based competitions such as “Innovation in IT” which aims to expand young minds and inculcate enthusiasm for information technology. Approximately 100 schools take part in this competition every year and there is a special effort made to involve students with special needs.

Assessment and Remedial Unit (ARU) for People with DisabilitiesThe university established a new Assessment and Remedial Unit (ARU) for students and other members of the community who are affected by some of the following conditions:

Community Based VolunteeringThe university has a community based volunteering initiative (MADAD) where both students and members of the community can become volunteers and participate in some form of community service. Some of the past community based projects have included organizing blood donations, desert cleanup campaigns, volunteering in hospitals and special needs centers and assisting local charities.

Supporting Local FarmersThe Date Palm Unit provides support to local farmers by providing them with thousands of date palm plants every year in addition to conducting valuable research.

Schools Outreach ProgramsThe university places great emphasis on educating young people and providing support

learning disabilities; sensory impairments; emotional disorders; mentally challenged; speech and language disorders and autism. The services provided include: counseling, assessment and remedial services and student training. The Unit also hosts a number of workshops, training seminars and conferences to raise awareness of special needs education.
