Why Incorporate Research in Art?More rigorous expectations of

high school graduates. All teachers, regardless of

grade level and subject must share the responsibility of developing literacy skills as part of the NYS Common Core Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy

Leonardo da Vinci did it.

Parallels Between StandardsNYSVA 3d. Commencement – General Education

Develop connections between the ways ideas, themes, and concepts are expressed through the visual arts and other disciplines in everyday life.

NYS Common Core Writing Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 9-

Anchor Standard: Research to Build & Present Knowledge

WHST.7.9-12: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects toanswer a question.

Observe or study through exploration or examination (College Board ).

To make for form by combining parts or elements (College Board, NYSVA 1)

Analyze, synthesize, and reflect on information to create an appropriate artistic solution. (College Board, NYSVA 1)

WHST.8. 9-10: Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and

digital sources, using advanced searches effectively;

To observe or study through exploration or examination (College Board).

To think deeply about the information and evaluate different kinds of mediums, subjects, themes, symbols, metaphors, and images for effectiveness in conveying meaning (College Board, NYSVA 1.b).

To make for form by combining parts or elements (College Board, NYSVA 1).

assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

WHST.9. 9-12:

Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

Observe or study through exploration or examination and reflection (College Board ).

Anchor Standard: Craft and Structure

RST.5.9-10:

Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a text (artwork), including relationships among key terms.

RST.5.11-12:

Analyze how the text (artwork) structures information or ideas into categories or hierarchies, demonstrating understanding of the information or ideas.

Observe or study through exploration or examination and reflection (College Board ).

Imagining: To form a mental image or concept (College Board).

Reflection: To think deeply and carefully about (College Board) and “use the language of art criticism, describe the visual and functional characteristics of works of art and interpret the relationships of works of art one to another, to describe the impact of the work on the viewer (NYSVA 3a.)

Common Core Inquiry Approach1. Initiate inquiry

Explore a topic & narrow inquiry path

2. Gather information Search, assess sources, take notes on credible sources

3. Deepen understanding Write evidence based claims to summarize information Experiment with new knowledge

4. Finalize inquiry Synthesize information in artwork and written form Write bibliography Present

Topic: Atmospheric PerspectiveIdentify details in the foreground, middle ground, and

background pertaining to value, color, saturation, color temperature, detail and contrast (RST.5.9-10, 11-12)

Observations Made by Students:1. The sky is yellow, orange, and red.2. Detail and texture is very clear in

the foreground. 3. Detail and texture is not as clear in

the middle ground. 4. No detail or texture is on the

mountains in the background.5. Colors are lighter in the

background.6. Colors are truer in the foreground.

Topic: Atmospheric PerspectiveWhat questions come to mind regarding the observations

you made? (RST.5.9-10, 11-12) WHY?1. Why is the sky is yellow, orange,

and red?2. Why is the detail and texture very

clear in the foreground but not the middle and background ?

3. Why are colors are lighter in the background ?

4. Why are colors are truer (more saturated) in the foreground ?

5. Who was the first artist to recognize atmospheric perspective?

Topic: Atmospheric Perspective

New path of inquiry:

Why are sunsets red?(WHST.7.9-12)

Quick & Dirty ResearchFind answers to the question and assess sources. (WHST.8. 9-10)

1. Is the information provided by a reliable source; an expert in the field, university, government?

2. Is the information peer reviewed; double checked by an expert or experts?

Take Notes (WHST.8. 9-10)

Draw Evidence from the Text (WHST.9. 9-12 )

Application & Presentation (NYSVA.1c , WHST.9. 9-12, WHST.9. 9-12 )

Application & Presentation (NYSVA.1c , WHST.9. 9-12, WHST.9. 9-12 )

Application & Presentation (NYSVA.1c , WHST.9. 9-12, WHST.9. 9-12 )

Scientific Inquiry Through ArtLeonardo daVinci illustrates the similarities between how

artists and scientists learn about their world.

Is it true that certain characteristics of fingerprints reflect one’s personality?

Types of clouds.
