Innovation The firm has developed a lightweight high energy density battery optimized for the high cycle life and high energy density requirements. Accomplishments Energy Output: 40-90 watt-hours per pound and 2.5- 8.0 watt-hours per cubic inch, depending on cell type, model and conditions of use; as much as 120 watt-hours per pound and 11.0 watt-hours per cubic inch for certain special models and applications. Power Output: From 50-150 watts per pound and 4-10 watts per cubic inch (continuously) for "LR" Type Cells, to 150-500 watts per pound and 10-35 watts per cubic inch (continuously) for "PM" Type Cells. On an intermittent basis, values two times the indicated power output are possible (i.e., 1000 watts per pound and 70 watts per cubic inch). Open-Circuit Cell Voltage:1.82-1.86 volts when fully charged, 1.61-1.63 volts when partially charged. Nominal Voltage Under Load: m 1.5 volts. Plateau Voltage Regulation: ± 2% at a fixed load and temperature limits within ± 10°F Commercialization The company has been very successful over the last few years in capturing market share and it’s revenue over the last year has increased by 80%. This growth is due to the the combination of capturing silver zinc battery production and the wide acceptance of Lithion`s rechargeable lithium ion technology. Lithion Inc. and our customers will also benefit from a $13.7M contract sponsored by the US Air Force, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other US Federal Government Agencies, to develop cells and batteries of 7 to 200 Ah. Government/Science Applications The firm has been extremely successful in capturing recent contract opportunities such as supplying cells/batteries for the MK-30 Navy target and the Swimmer Delivery Vehicles for the Navy Seals. The company has provided notable technological advances for many different electro chemistries and is an acknowledged leader in designing, developing and fabricating high reliability cells, batteries and battery Points of Contact: NASA: [email protected] -Company [email protected] 1992 SBIR Phase II ; NAS9-98040 Johnson Space Center Date of Update 03- 20-03 Success Story 09-063 Yardney Battery Products High Energy Density Silver-Zinc Cells Yardney, Pawcatuck, Connecticut

Innovation• The firm has developed a lightweight high energy density battery optimized for the high cycle life and high energy density requirements.

Accomplishments Energy Output: 40-90 watt-hours per pound and 2.5-8.0 watt-hours per cubic inch, depending on cell type, model and conditions of use; as much as 120 watt-hours per pound and 11.0 watt-hours per cubic inch for certain special models and applications.• Power Output: From 50-150 watts per pound and 4-10 watts per cubic inch (continuously) for "LR" Type Cells, to 150-500 watts per pound and 10-35 watts per cubic inch (continuously) for "PM" Type Cells. On an intermittent basis, values two times the indicated power output are possible (i.e., 1000 watts per pound and 70 watts per cubic inch).• Open-Circuit Cell Voltage:1.82-1.86 volts when fully charged, 1.61-1.63 volts when partially charged.• Nominal Voltage Under Load: m 1.5 volts.• Plateau Voltage Regulation: ± 2% at a fixed load and temperature limits within ± 10°F

Commercialization• The company has been very successful over the last few years in capturing

market share and it’s revenue over the last year has increased by 80%. This growth is due to the the combination of capturing silver zinc battery production and the wide acceptance of Lithion`s rechargeable lithium ion technology.

• Lithion Inc. and our customers will also benefit from a $13.7M contract sponsored by the US Air Force, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other US Federal Government Agencies, to develop cells and batteries of 7 to 200 Ah.

Government/Science Applications

• The firm has been extremely successful in capturing recent contract opportunities such as supplying cells/batteries for the MK-30 Navy target and the Swimmer Delivery Vehicles for the Navy Seals.

• The company has provided notable technological advances for many different electro chemistries and is an acknowledged leader in designing, developing and fabricating high reliability cells, batteries and battery systems for the following types of applications.

Torpedo Applications Torpedo Target Applications Other Undersea Vehicular Applications Space Applications Missile/Launch Vehicle Applications Satellite Applications Electronic Newsgathering (ENG) Application Oil Exploration Applications Portable Communications Equipment Applications Other Specialized Applications
