Finish to Year 12 Program We had a very smooth and enjoyable finish to the Year 12 program this year. While some of our Ag Studies and Trades students finished their programs early in week one, many were still working hard to complete their courses late in week two. Some were still here in week three trying to complete industry training qualifications. The two main achievement targets for our Year 12 students are the attainment of a WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) and the completion of a Certifi-cate II in Agriculture. At this stage it seems likely we will finish with very good results in both of these targets year. Graduation Our 2019 Graduation will take place on Fri-day November 15 commencing at 11.00 am. The ceremony runs for approximately one hour and is followed by a luncheon. Year 12 students are required to wear their full school uniform and to arrive at the College at about 10.15 am for photos and a quick dress rehearsal. We also require students to adhere to the College’s grooming and jewel-lery policy, at least for one last time! In some very good news, the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Sue Ellery MLC, has accepted an invitation to attend this year’s Graduation. Jimmy Bidstrup, a 2014 College graduate, will be this year’s guest speaker. 2019 Year 12 Student Prefects We have commenced the process of se-lecting our 2020 Year 12 Student Prefects. The successful students will be announced on Graduation Day. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our 2019 Year 12 Student Prefects: Deahna Keam (School Captain), Zac Mostert (School Captain), Haylee Pitts, Tom Darwin, Ben Old-en and Dylan Whitehurst for the great jobs

they’ve done in their leadership roles this year. We’ve had an exceptionally positive and enjoyable atmosphere in this school this year and a lot of that credit needs to go to our Year 12 Stu-dent Prefects for the example they’ve set. 2019 Parent and Residential Surveys Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to provide us with feedback in either our 2019 Parent Survey or our 2019 Residential Survey, or both. We’ve have a good response rate so far. Just a reminder that we only get the feedback from those surveys that are fully completed. At the moment we have a large number of Parent Surveys (39) that haven’t yet been fully com-pleted. The link to the 2019 Parent Survey is: https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/afMnRhzx The link to access the 2019 Residential Survey is: https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/VtV3xZnK The results of the surveys will be re-viewed by College Staff and by the College Board as part of our annual self-review processes. Copies of the surveys will also be published online early in 2020. The feedback from this year’s surveys will be particularly important we look for areas of improvement to target in our 2020-2023 Business Plan to be developed at the end of this year.

Priority Maintenance Program The College has been a major beneficiary of the High Priority Maintenance and Minor Works Program for public schools recently announced by the State Government. We have received $62,400 to be used for maintenance issues or a range of improve-ments to school infrastructure as part of Phase 1 of the program. In addition, a fur-ther $654,533 has been allocated to the College to address building maintenance issues identified through the College’s Build-ing Condition Assessment Report. This will be rolled out over the next two years. College Board Elections Nominations will soon be called for parents interested in filling three parent-member positions on our College Board which will become vacant at the end of this year. The College Board consists of 11 members, five of whom are parents. If you would like to discuss what’s involved with being a Board member please call either myself on 9848 0200 or Steve Jones, our Board Chair, on 0497228779. 2020 Student Enrolments We still have a large number of students on a waiting list hoping to get a place at the College next year, so it would be greatly appreciated if parents could inform us as soon as possible if their son or daughter isn’t intending to continue at the College next year. The earlier we know the sooner we can contact those students who’ve been waiting patiently for an opportunity. A reminder also that, while our overall num-bers for next year are very strong, we still have some available places for girls in the College Residence.

We are concerned with the time available in Year 12 for students to complete a Certifi-cate 3 in Agriculture. As a result, Year 11 students undertaking a Cert.3 next year can remain at the College for a further two weeks after the Year 12 Graduation to work on this qualification. These students will be “on farm” and working under the direction of Darren Scahill. I ask parents of Year 11 students to discuss with their son/daughter their intentions with the Cert. 3 Agriculture. If you require further information please contact me on 98480205. Year 11 ATAR Camp Amanda Gaunt, Eric Bogensperger and I took fourteen Year 11 students on an ATAR support camp to Perth in late October. The purpose of the trip was to promote univer-sity study as a real option after completing Year 12, specifically the Agricultural Science course at the University of WA, the Agri-business course at Curtin University and the

Graduation Our 2019 Graduation will take place on Fri-day November 15 commencing at 11.00 am. The ceremony runs for approximately one hour and is followed by a luncheon. Year 12 students are required to wear their full school uniform and to arrive at the College at 10.00 am. We also require students to adhere to the College’s grooming and jewel-lery policy. A professional photographer will also be available for graduating stu-dents from 9.30am for students and par-ents. OLNA Results The results of the second round of OLNA testing have been released and provided to students. We will forward the results to parents as soon as possible. Please remem-ber that for those Year 11 students who are yet to achieve the “Category 3” benchmark in any of the components will still have two more opportunities next year. Certificate 3 Agriculture The College is again providing the oppor-tunity for Year 12 students to achieve a Cer-tificate 3 in Agriculture in 2020. Darren Scahill (Agriculture Vet Coordinator) recently outlined to interested Year 11 stu-dents the units of competency involved in the Cert. 3 and briefly how these units will be delivered at the College. Further infor-mation will be provided later in the term. It is very important that students and par-ents are aware of the following:

Students must have completed the Cert. 2 Agriculture or be close to completion (16 competencies or more) before gaining entry to the Cert. 3.

The priority must be to complete the remaining Cert. 2 competencies as soon as possible.

Much of the training and as-sessment for the Cert. 3 will occur during Farm Practice/ Workplace Learning sessions.

Activities and assessments will involve far more research and written work than was the case with the Cert.2.

At times students will be re-quired to attend theory ses-sions for the Cert 3 during prep time in the evening.

There is a significant practical and theoretical workload to complete a Cert. 3 Agriculture.

It is also an excellent opportunity to develop higher-level skills and knowledge in agriculture and a level 3 qualification. Sixteen students have indicated they are interested in com-pleting this qualification over the com-ing 12 months.

son and Sophie Cuthbert check aspects of the AgriBusinbess Course at Curtin Uni.

Animal Science programme at Murdoch University. We also visited Muresk Institute where students have the opportunity to study an Associate Degree in Agriculture, Diploma of Agriculture or for a qualification in Vet Nursing. Hopefully the camp provided plenty of information on the choices availa-ble for tertiary study in agriculture in WA and allowed our students the opportunity to experience life on a University campus. My thanks to Alysia Keppert (Agricultural Education) for her help with the organisa-tion of the visit and to Amanda Gaunt and Eric Bogensperger for their assistance while on tour. Year 10 Work Experience Parents or guardians of our current Year 10 students should have received information at the end of term 3 regarding a two-week block of school-authorised work experience at the end of Term 4 (Monday 9th to Thurs-day 19th December). If parents have any questions regarding this work experience block they should contact me at the College. Year 10 and 11 Finish Year 11 Agricultural Studies students will be on Work Experience during Week 6 while Year 11 ATAR students are completing their Semester 2 exams. Both Work Experience and Semester 2 exams finish on Friday No-vember 22. As outlined above, these ar-rangements do not include students intend-ing to complete a Certificate 3 in 2020. They can remain at the College from November 19 to November 29 to begin their Cert. 3 training programme. The Year 10’s will finish their normal pro-gram at the College on Friday November 29. The majority of Year 10’s will be attending the Study Tour to Esperance during Week 8 and then complete two weeks of work expe-rience in Weeks 9 and 10. 2020 Learning Programme Course selection forms were sent out to parents/guardians earlier this term. I under-stand some current Year 10 and 11 students are still undecided on subject selections for 2020. If parents/guardians require further information for course options, pathways, University entry or VET programmes, please contact me by email or telephone.

The Inter-College Equestrian Challenge is a competition between several colleges over three equestrian disciplines; show horse, show jumping and camp drafting - gaining points and ribbons throughout the day towards an overall winner. Colleges could enter as teams of four, teams of two or individual riders, and win trophies and prizes in indi-vidual events and also compete for an overall winner across all events for the top Col-lege and win the perpetual shield. This year there were so many competitors, 40 horses and riders for the individual prize, the individual riders were split between year groups for extra ribbons. 10 students attended from Denmark and all our students showed good sportsmanship and care of their horses. We had fun, came back with a ribbon and grew in confidence. People at the event comment on how well behaved our students were and how quietly they rode their horses. Classes at the event were Hacking, Show-jumping, Barrel Racing, Games and Camp drafting. Results have been published on our Facebook page. Pictured Below: Ashleigh Pritchard, Caitlin Wilson and Jessica James proudly display winning ribbons.

First Aid Training

Students have been involved in St John Ambulance First Aid Training this term. The training provides them with the life-saving techniques needed to provide an initial response in the event of a medical emergency. First aid training for students not only pro-vides a valuable life skill, but they also learn to be responsible for the welfare of others, adding to the sense of community within a school.

Leavers Alive

Keeping our young people safe is extremely important to us and Year 10 students attended “Leavers Alive”. This is an initiative developed by Denmark St John’s Ambulance in conjunction with Denmark Police and Fire Rescue. “Leavers Alive” is a program that simulates a teenager driving a car and texting at the same time, and the consequence of that action. Mentors present ex-plain what is happening and provide emotional support for any-one affected by the scenario presented.

what students have learnt at the College. Other non-agricultural educational visits are also planned for the tour. We feel this tour will be of significant educational bene-fit and complement what students have learned at the College. The teaching staff are in the process of fi-nalising the Study Tour information and consent forms will be emailed home to par-ents and guardians. Please return the con-sent form as soon as possible. I have outlined behaviour expectations to all Year 10 students both for the tour and the weeks leading up to the Study Tour. Teaching staff are only prepared to take those students who have shown positive behaviour during the term on a major ex-cursion such as Study Tour.

The start of Term 4 has been productive with students and staff working diligently to meet deadlines. Overall we have had a posi-tive year, with most students making good academic progress and demonstrating in-creasing maturity and effective life skills. I have been pleased with our Year 12 stu-dents who have worked hard to complete assessment tasks and units of competency before leaving the College to progress into their next steps in life. We look forward to their return for the Graduation Ceremony on Friday 15 of November. Year 12 ATAR External Written Exams A reminder that the Year 12 ATAR External Written Exams will take place at Denmark SHS and the exam timetable is as follows:

ATAR students staying in the College resi-dence will have free time during the exam period that includes the option of going into town, studying for the exam, or relaxing in the College residence. We are confident that the students will make every effort to do well and aspire to achieve the results they deserve. Year 11 ATAR Semester Two Exams The College’s ATAR Exam timetable is as follows. We really hope the students use their time wisely over the next two weeks revising and are well equipped to take on the exams.

Year 10 and 11 Students The end of the 2019 college year is fast approaching and it is vital for our Year 10 and 11 students to remain focused and determined to finish on a positive note. Year 11 students are required to remain in the College program until the end of Week 6. The Year 10 students will finish up at the College at the end of Week 8 and will spend the last two weeks of the term (weeks 9 and 10) completing their Work Experience re-quirements for the year. Year 11 ATAR Camp Steve Swallow, Eric Bogensperger and I, along with the Year 11 ATAR students attended a combined WACoA campus trip to Perth to tour the three main universities and Muresk on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 October respectively. This trip was a great opportunity for our students to network with the ATAR students from the other WACoA sites and to explore their post-secondary courses and options. I thank Steve Swallow and Alysia Kepert for organis-ing the camp and university tours. Year 10 Study Tour Study Tour 2019 will take place in week 8 which will include visits to a number of agricultural/industrial enterprises and related industries in Ravensthorpe, Esperance and Cape Le Grand National Park. What a very busy Term Three with the agri-cultural competitions being completed at the Perth Royal Show. This month’s Farm Report will focus on these competitions and events. Farm Skills Competition It began with the Farm Skills Competition where all Agricultural Colleges come togeth-er and compete in sixteen different farming events. Events include - Fencing, Shearing and Tractor Driving, just to name a few. Denmark entered three teams consisting of a Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 groups. With six members in each team, students worked through their individual and group events followed by an awards presentation later in the afternoon. All teams did very well and represented themselves and the College in a very professional manner. Overall the Year Twelve team was placed sixth however a major highlight was the success of the Year 10’s placing second in the fencing. This event is to erect a three plain wire fence over sixty meters within twenty minutes. The Year Ten team completed their fence in twelve minutes and disassem-bled it in three. The quality of the fence was outstanding with excellent knots and team-work. Well done to all students who partici-pated. Sheep We also took to the Show a team of sheep and cattle and entered into several events. Staff and students exhibited a team of Corriedale ewes and rams and were suc-cessful in that competition. Two teams of merino wethers competed in an AWI Challenge against all other Colleges and were awarded first place for the Wethers wool quality and value. A great result for the Sheep staff and students who

The College steers achieved very high results in all weight divisions, the highlight being a Murray Grey/Gelbveih steer winning the Champion Light Weight Carcase. This is an outstanding achievement for the Staff and students who put so much time into the preparation for this event. Parading and Judging In addition to the cattle events there are several competitions which the students compete such as parading and judging. The standard demonstrated by students was of an excellent level with many of the finalists wearing the College uniform. Congratulations to all Staff and students involved with the quality of the cattle and professionalism of the students being widely recognised by other cattle exhibitors and the public.

worked hard to train and prepare these animals. Shearing and Wool Handling Students also competed in another AWI Breeders Challenge testing their skills at shearing, wool handling and sheep judging. Great experience was gained entering these events. Cattle In the Cattle lanes things were also very busy. The College entered twelve steers in the Led Steer Competition. This is where the animals are prepared for several months to be judged for muscle and fat coverage suitable for the domestic beef market. Six of the steers qualified into the final rounds with a Limousin animal being awarded Champion in the Medium weight division. The steers are then sold, slaughtered and judged again for their carcase quality.

tion. He was also a very active Liberal Party member, twice contesting a seat and a Shire Councillor at Wongan Hills. He was instrumental in a ceremony at the College to place a plaque and rose tree in the rose garden in memory of his and our close friend Monty Buttfield, a former house master and Principal of the School/College. On moving to Mandurah later, he became sales manager for Mandurah Toyota until retirement. His hobby is sailing while Marion enjoys playing bridge and community work. Tim was also very good at sport, espe-cially football. He could have played WAFL if not for the pressure of work and there being no money in playing. After completing his schooling, Tim worked at a farm in Mt Barker before moving to Dowerin, Three Springs and Quairading. It was here that he met and married Eva. They moved to Corri-gin and spent 10 years there during which time their children were born. From there they moved to Fielder sta-tion which comprised 25,000 acres, and Tim was overseer. Whilst at Corri-gin, they were successful in applying for Conditional Purchase land at Jerdacuttup and worked hard to set it up. Eva, alongside Tim, drove a tractor, clearing, cultivating, fencing and seed-ing to help establish their farm during free time from the station. Once established, they cropped canola and barley, purchase ewes and bred fat lambs. They had a feedlot and were able to obtain top prices for their lambs, both at the local butchers and Katanning saleyards. They have recently sold the farm and retired to Hopetoun. Tim does some farm sitting for people wanting to go on holiday and walks 10 to 25 kms a day. Eva does social work and plays bowls. Tim is a committee member of the Old Collegians Association. Our 1953-1956 past students had a very enjoyable reunion in Denmark from October 16th to 20th. We visited he Recollections of War Museum, took a boat trip out into Wilson’s Inlet and visited Green Pool, Lights Beach and the honey factory by bus. The event was rounded off with an excellent din-ner at Mrs Jones café.

Hi everyone Twins, Michael and Tim Flanagan (1954-1955 past students), turned 81 years of age on 30th August. Some of us attending the open day, celebrated with Tim and Eva on the Friday night with dinner and cutting of the cake. I first met them in 1945, along with their older brother, Peter, whilst attending St Louis Jesuit College in Claremont. They had lost both parents and been placed in the care of a nanny, Alice Tooke. They are both grateful to the Mar-wick and Herron families for their upbring-ing. Eight years later, in 1953, I met up with Peter again in my first year, as a ‘melon’ at Denmark. He was in his second year, schools captain and Under Officer of the Cadets. As a very young boy, he had contracted polio and wore a big-heeled boot with irons up to his thighs on his right leg, later removed as he built up strength. He learned how to run and kick a football with his left leg and played cricket both as a batsman and bow-ler. He was very good at it too. After school he worked for Jack Money at North Danda-lup – dairy and beef cattle and a horse rac-ing stud. He later joined Dalgety’s livestock firm but unfortunately died at an early age. Michael and Tim came to Denmark in 1954 – as ‘melons’ to my year. Michael was a very good footballer and athlete. At the Denmark Agricultural School he was the 1955 school champion, holding the 440 yards record of 57.2 secs, 880 yards record of 2mins 14.5 secs and mile record of 5 min 5 secs. He was also Sergeant major of the cadets. Michael met and married Marion at Wongan Hills. Marion’s family had a business of merchan-dise, school bus, fuel and Elders agency, which she and Michael took over when her parents retired. In the morning, he would drive the school bus and then get into the table top truck, drive to Perth Goomalling fuel depot to collect bulk and drum fuel, drive back to Wongan Hills and get into the school bus, back to the truck to deliver drum fuel to the farmers and so on every working day. He also played tennis, football and cricket for Wongan Hills. When the business was sold, they moved to Perth where he became General Manager of Subiaco Football Club during the Haydn Bunton Jnr era. He was influential in the building of the Subiaco Sporting Club pavil-ion a Subiaco oval. With State of Origin and AFL games played at Subiaco, bar trade and membership made the club financially sound. He as also engaged in the possibility of a Goldfields team in the WAFL competi-

VALE PHILLIP MARSHALL

AG ADVISORY COMMITTEE

1979—2019

Above: Phillip Marshall pictured with his wife Sheelagh. We remember Phillip Marshall, Agricultural Advisory Committee member who sadly passed away 22 September 2019. Phillip was a member of the College Agricultural Advisory Committee for 40 years, oversee-ing many changes, that has seen the Col-lege become a leading institution in the education of young people in a calling close to his heart—agriculture. As well as being a luminary he has, for many years, supported the development of young people who have a passion for agri-culture by providing the annual Phillip Marshall Scholarship for Excellence in Hor-ticulture. A generous scholarship for stu-dents currently studying in Year 11, who demonstrate a strong level of interest and performance in the College’s horticulture enterprise and who are looking toward a career in the horticultural sector. Phillip’s altruistic and selfless approach will be missed by everyone.

Please let us have your news so that we can let others know what is happening to past students. Cheers for now Don McCausland Chairperson
