Volume 30 Issue 2 A monthly publication February 2016
Inland Valley Hope Partners is pleased to announce that Pacific Western Bank will serve as Title Sponsor for this year’s 20th Annual Golf Classic scheduled for May 12, 2016 at the Sierra Lakes Golf Course in Fontana. Pacific Western Bank has been a long-time supporter of Hope Partners’ programs and our annual golf tournament, and we are very thankful to have them bless us with this leadership gift.
We invite you to join us for this day of fun and philanthropy out on the links! Foursomes and sponsorship opportunities are still available, and, as always, all proceeds from the Golf Classic will help Hope Partners provide food, shelter and supportive services to thousands of local children and their families. This year’s tournament will kick-off with registration/check-in at 11:00 a.m. The In-N-Out Burger Truck will be present to provide lunch and then the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive and Hole-in-One contests will be conducted on the course with prizes to be presented at the evening’s award dinner. Even if you don’t play golf, you can still join us! The awards dinner, starting at approximately 6 p.m., will feature delicious food and opportunities to win fabulous auction and raffle prizes. Plus, it all benefits the hungry and homeless in our community. Whether you’re a sponsor, individual golfer, foursome, or would simply like to join us for dinner, make sure to reserve your spot today! To access the Golf Brochure/Registration form, please visit www.inlandvalleyhopepartners.org and click on the Annual Golf Classic tab. For more information contact Kami Newman, Director of Development and Communication, at 909-622-3806, x105. Blessings ……
It’s February—the month of love. So we at Hope Partners thought it fitting to use this month’s newsletter to share a bit of our love and appreciation for the volunteers who make our work possible. Last year Hope Partners helped provide more than 75,000 low-income men, women and children with food and shelter. With a small staff of only ten individuals (two of which are part-time), we can tell you that none of that would have been possible without our dedicated, helpful volunteer corps. Whether you serve in one of our food pantries, housing programs, Hope Partners at Amy’s Farm or any of our other programs, we appreciate each and every one of you and the dedication you have to Hope Partners and those we serve! In fact, we’d love to invite all of our volunteers to join us for this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, April 22nd! Group and individual volunteers, ongoing program or one-time event volunteers are all welcome. Please come and let us share our gratitude with you. The April event will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Pomona’s Fellowship Hall (1751 N. Park Ave. Pomona 91768). More information will follow soon. Our volunteers play such an instrumental role in all of our programs. Check out page 3 of this month’s newsletter for some of our recent group volunteer projects as well as our first official Volunteer Spotlight of 2016. We look forward to highlighting many of our volunteers and supporters in future newsletters. Again, to all of our volunteers: You make the world a better place, and we love you for it! Happy Valentine’s Day.
Blessings,
Wytske G. Visser

Congratulations to Primm Tabernacle A.M.E. Church Inland Valley Hope Partners would like to congratulate Primm Tabernacle African Methodist Church on its 120th Anniversary of ministry. Primm Tabernacle is the Pomona Valley’s first and oldest church, and we are thankful to Rev. Dr. Betty Hanna-Witherspoon and the congregation for their many years of partnership with Inland Valley Hope Partners in serving the needs of our community.
Marine Volunteers at Beta Food Pantry
Thank you to SS GT Manuel Rios of the Recruiting Substation in Pomona and his team of Marine volunteers for assisting at our Beta Food Pantry in January. The groups of 12 to 14 Marines used their time-off from active-duty to help us organize and sort donations for distribution to the no and low-income families we serve. We appreciate you!
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Volunteers
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities. Each year we are blessed to have local groups partner with us to give back to the community, and this year was no exception. A volunteer group from Kaiser Permanente’s Fontana Medical Center spent the
morning of January 18th at our Sova Food Pantry in Ontario. There they assisted in bagging bulk food items for distribution to our clients. Meanwhile volunteers from the University of La Verne
transformed simple t-shirts into reusable bags at our Administration Office. These bags will be used to distribute food to clients at our Beta Food Pantry.
Albertsons Food Drive Volunteers
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who assisted at the Rancho Cucamonga Albertsons Food Drive in January. Together, they collected 1,800 lbs of food and $169 in monetary donations for our agency. Thank you also to Albertsons for their continued support!
We LOVE Our Volunteers! A Marine group volunteered at the Beta center in Pomona in January. About 12 to 14 Marines went to volunteer on their
time off. We would like to thank all of them for coming out at helping at the food pantry. We would also like to thank SS GT
Manuel Rios from the recruiting sub station in Pomona.
Carmen Jauregui and Judy Haas work the Monday 1:00pm to 3:00pm shift every week at our Sova Food Pantry. Carmen started volunteering in 2009 after reading about the need for volunteers in the Hope Partners’ newsletter. Judy started a year later after hearing about Hope Partners through her church (First Presbyterian Church of Upland). They form a wonderful team who take the need to feed the hungry seriously and still maintain their sense of humor. Their shift is always covered because when Carmen is away, Judy’s husband Bob subs in and when Judy is away Carmen’s husband Vernan takes over. Judy and Carmen say they continue to come back week after week because they enjoy supporting the efforts of Hope Partners to feed the hungry and the feeling that they are making a difference in the lives of the families who come to our Sova Food Pantry for assistance.
Thank you Carmen and Judy!

CG and his 2 year old daughter came to the Our House family shelter in December. As a participant in an electrician apprentice program, CG found himself without income for several months in between contracts. Lacking sufficient savings, CG and his daughter experienced homelessness for three months before coming to Hope Partners for assistance. While here CG was a model client, attending all the educational workshops and counseling sessions and complying with all policies. With assistance from the Hope Partners’ Rapid Re-Housing program, CG was able to quickly secure a 2 bedroom apartment in Upland for his family. He is very grateful to Hope Partners for helping him get back on his feet and accomplish his goals. Once he completes his apprenticeship next year, he hopes to become a homeowner. We wish you the best CG!
Our House Shelter/Rapid Re-Housing Success Story
Did you know that Inland Valley Hope Partners offers a Rapid Re-Housing Program (RRH) for families experiencing homelessness? Through a grant from HUD and the San Bernardino County Continuum of Care, Hope Partners offers this valuable housing placement and stabilization program designed to quickly return homeless families to safe and stable housing. As part of this program, homeless families receive short to medium term rental assistance and may also receive assistance with utility deposits and other move-in expenses. RRH clients also receive wrap-around services designed to help them secure and maintain a residence. These services include ongoing case management, housing navigation, educational workshops on topics such as financial literacy, being a good tenant, landlord’s rights and responsibilities as well as referrals to employment resources, mental health services, mainstream benefit providers and other resources to help clients be successful at independent living. Currently, the RRH program’s greatest obstacle is finding property managers willing to rent to our homeless families despite their housing barriers. We are looking for property managers and landlords in San Bernardino County who would like to partner with us to help these families get back on their feed. Consider just a few of the benefits to landlords participating in the Hope Partners RRH program:
Decrease your advertising costs – We have ready-to-rent tenants for your vacant units.
Timely and reliable payments while participants are in the RRH program – Hope Partners assists families with security deposits and other up-front moving costs as well as time-limited rental assistance. This allows clients time to stabilize and build an emergency fund for the future.
Problem prevention – We educate our clients on becoming ideal tenants and work with them on an ongoing basis to make sure they have the support they need to avoid past mistakes and become successful at independent living. Our case manager regularly meets with clients to identify and address problems early before they become irreparable.
Neutral party to mediate problems – We are also here to support our landlords and we offer back-up via a highly credible intermediary who can be called and will step in if/ when trouble or situations occur.
Finally, the satisfaction of helping families in-need – Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to live. Some people make mistakes, but everyone deserves a second chance. By helping house our clients, you are playing an integral role not only in helping individuals take charge of their lives, but also in making your community a better place to live.
For more information on this program, contact Karen Abram at 909-622-3806, x106 or [email protected].
San Bernardino County Property Managers Wanted!
Pastor Issues Challenge to Homeowners
Staff and volunteers at Hope Partners’ Housing Office were touched this month by an unexpected visit by Rev. Melvin Langeland of Pomona. The reverend shared that he and his wife Shirley had run into a young mother at the store who had lost her apartment and was struggling to keep her family housed in a local hotel. Motivated by her plight, the couple decided to make a donation to Inland Valley Hope Partners specifically to fund motel vouchers for the homeless so that this mother and others like her will be able to have immediate access to a night’s shelter from the harsh winter cold. During his visit, the Rev. Langeland said that he and his wife were very blessed to have paid off their mortgage and own their home and felt that it was their responsibility to now help others in the community struggling to find and maintain housing. The reverend agreed to let us share his and Shirley’s story in hopes that it would encourage other local homeown-ers whose homes are paid in full to donate all or a portion of the amount they would pay toward a mortgage to help others struggling with housing issues. Our hope is that you will be just as inspired by this episode as we were. Thank you very much to Rev. and Mrs. Langeland!

Other Clever Ways to Give...
Through work days in October, November, and December, the Hope Partners at Amy's Farm program donated 1,324 lbs. of fresh produce to clients at our food pantries. This was made possible by the work of 162 volunteers who gave 421 hours of service. They came from the Claremont Colleges, University of La Verne, Diamond Bar High School, Walnut High School, City of Ontario, Diamond Bar LDS Church, River of Life Church, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. In addition to extensive planting and harvesting, volunteers weeded, pruned fruit trees, cleaned out old vegetable beds and helped to prepare 120 new beds. This month, Hope Partners at Amy’s Farm welcomed three student interns from the Claremont Colleges who will volunteer at the farm as part of a food justice class. We are highly encouraged by the positive results of this beneficial partnership between Inland Valley Hope Partners and Amy’s Farm. For more information on farm and volunteer opportunities, visit our website at www.inlandvalleyhopepartners.org.
Hope Partners at Amy's Farm Yields Its First Winter Harvest A huge thank you to the
My Day Counts/ Orange County Adult Achievement Center for donating 25 bikes to Inland Valley Hope Partners. The bikes were stored at our Sova Food Pantry and given out to homeless individuals who arrived on foot when they came to receive regular food assistance.
The My Day Counts/ Orange County Adult Achievement Center plans to donate more bikes when they have them available. Thank you very much, our clients were grateful to receive these.

The Pomona Host Lions will be putting a small children’s library in the waiting area of our Beta Food Pantry. Children will be given the option to read at Beta, borrow and return a book or take a book home to enjoy time and time again. The Host Lions will restock the library every few weeks. Donations of books for children of all ages are welcome and will help the Pomona Host Lions in this effort to get books in the hands of the children of the low-income children we serve.
