2014 YEAR IN REVIEW

The Inland Empire 66ers had a tremendous 2014 season that was successful on the field courtesy of a major second-half turnaround as well as off the field thanks to tremendous attendance, exciting promotions and charitable giving. Once again, San Manuel Stadium proved the place to be in the Inland Empire when it comes to family entertainment and community pride. The 66ers drew 195,841 fans to the ballpark throughout the regular season, an increase in attendance from the season prior despite losing a game to a rare rain-out.

TThe 66ers began the year as defending California League Champions and an Opening Night 7-0 shutout win at High Desert gave people plenty to be excited about. It was the first of the Sixers’ California League best nine shutouts on the season. Despite the initial success, the club did not fair very well in the win-column through much of the season. The 66ers opened the second half of the campaign with a rough two weeks going just 1-13 to begin the league’s second act. That did not deter Manager Denny Hocking nor his boys.

TThe 66ers played inspired baseball from Independence Day through the end of the year. The club went 36-20 to finish the regular season and ended up winning the California League Southern Division Second Half title by two games. In that stretch the club notched a ten-game winning streak. After defeating Lake Elsinore Storm in the first round of the playoffs, the white-hot Sixers were finally stopped in the Southern Division Championship by Lancaster. First baseman Dennis Raben tied a franchise record with 31 home runs. He did it in just 105 games as well as knocking in 94 runs and batting .292. ShSherman Johnson led the Cal League with 13 triples to go along with his 17 homers and 78 RBI. The Tampa, FL native had team-highs in multiple categories including stolen bases (26) and games played (136). He was also named “best defensive second baseman” in the league by Baseball America. The “best breaking ball” in the League went to reliever Austin Adams, who along with fellow pitchers Nate Smith and Kurt Spomer were named mid-season Cal League All-Stars. Lefty Tyler DeLoach was honored as a post-season All-Star after leading the team with 10 wins and 122 strikeouts; he ffinished second in the circuit with a 3.21 ERA among qualified pitchers.

Off the field, the club debuted a series of new logos and colors that were widely hailed as innovative and exciting. 2014 was marked by 12 fireworks extravaganzas and featured the most giveaway promotions in team history. The Sixers Disability Awareness Night was a finalist for Minor League Baseball’s best promotion of the month, while the club’s Zombie Apocalypse Jersey Auction earned national media coverage from the MLB Network, Yahoo Sports and others. It was one of three jersey auctions over the course of the year that helped the club raise $10,000 for local charities. Additionally, the 12th AnnAnnual 66ers Golf Tournament raised $12,000 dollars for the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. While for the second year in a row the 66ers elementary school reading program had over 30,000 participants throughout the Inland Empire.
