During a long hot dry summer holiday weekend on St George Island a wildfire is ignited by a careless vacationer starting a

charcoal fire. The wildfire quickly grows into a massive conflagration threatening lives and structures. Within minutes it has cut the island in half between West 9th & 10th Streets. With

strong winds blowing from the east, emergency responders now face the potential of a large loss of life due to the lack of

an escape route from the west end of St George Island.

In an effort to prepare local and regional emergency responders for the possibility of a massive wildfire threatening residents, vacationers and structures during a long summer

holiday weekend the county’s Emergency Management Department has undertaken the coordination of a innovative disaster learning experience entitled “Coastal Conflagration –

An Island Evacuation Tabletop Exercise”.

The purpose of this exercise is to assess the ability of emergency responders to work together using the National

Incident Management System to establish a Unified Command in an effort to meet the disaster caused needs of island residents, vacationers and business owners during a

significant event such as a large wildfire.
