Though Olympia seems like a long way to go for chili and cornbread, once you‟ve attended one of these great events at the beautiful home of Fred
Wright and Kathy Lombardo, you‟ll think nothing of the distance. The attendee list includes people from only a couple miles away to folks driving more than 75 miles to join. Heck, the rainy, snowy,
windy weather couldn‟t even stop the crowd looking for the 2012 NWARC Chili
Cookoff.
There were 8 different entrants with a
wonderful variety of chili types and styles. Many with beans, some without. Some with beef and others with mystery recipes… and not a bad choice in the bunch. I was glad I wasn‟t a judge because trying to pick a winner is no easy task. I sampled each one and had no hope of calling just one a winner. The cornbread competition had 7 entries including one made with left over bourbon from the Bluegrass convention!
Gordy Hyde had won this competition the last couple years so it made sense that he lead the judging. Along with some help, the final choices were made. They named 3 top award winners for each competition. Joe & Lynn Faherty won with their Texas style chili, and the recipe came from a cookbook they won back in 1998 at a previous club chili contest. Also Joan Lawson and Tony Schmid were given awards for their chili. The cornbread winners were Debi
Schmid, Joan Lawson, and Kristy Affolter.
Not to be outdone, the hospitality was equally
top notch. Fred and Kathy have built them-selves a beautiful home in a fantastic setting on the shores along of Totten Inlet, west of Olym-

pia. We enjoyed tours of the rooms with the perfect décor, woodwork, and furnishings. Since the weather became nice, we had the chance to wander the trails on the property including the beach area. Very relaxing and I hope their security
system doesn‟t catch me setting up camp on their beach all next summer.
Thanks to all the people who prepared chili or corn bread, hosted us, judged, or like me… simply ate and enjoyed the event. (Thanks also to Steve Schaeffer who let me take his new Miata for a quick spin of along Steamboat Island Road. That is how the little Mazda is supposed to go!) Fred R.
The Winning Recipe by Joe Faherty:
This recipe is from a book Southwest American Cookbook, that I won at the '94 chili contest, I came in second with a
traditional Texas "No Bean" chili. This is the bean-less, tomato-less, classic Texas chili about which one hears so much is called " The Real McCoy"
1/4 C. olive oil
2 large onions coarsely chopped
8 medium garlic cloves peeled and minced
2 lbs well-marbled beef chuck cut into 1/2 inch cubes
2 lbs chili grind beef
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/3 cup mild, unseasoned chili powder or 1 cup chili paste...see below!
2 tablespoons ground cumin from toasted seeds
2 T. dried oregano, preferably Mexican
1 1/2 t. cayenne pepper, or to taste
5 C. beef stock, prepared without salt, or 4 C canned beef broth diluted with 1 C water
2-3 T. yellow cornmeal, as optional thickener (Joe did not use)
1. In large skillet over med. heat, warm the oil. Add the onions and garlic, lower the heat slightly, and cook, stirring once or twice, until very tender, about 20 Min.
2. Meanwhile, set a 4.5-5 quart heavy flameproof casserole or Dutch oven over med. heat. Add the cubed beef, season with salt and cook, uncovered, stirring often, until the meat has lost all pink color, about 20 min.
3. Add the ground beef and cook until it has lost it's color
4. Scrape the onions and garlic into the casserole with the beef. Stir in the chili powders or paste, cumin, oregano, and cayenne pepper and cook, stirring for 5 min. Stir in the beef stock and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer un-covered, stirring occasionally for 1.5 hrs.
5. Taste, correct the seasoning, and add water if the chili is thickening too rapidly. Continue to simmer for another 30 min. or until the meat is tender.
Chili Paste Recipe: This is what makes this chili great!
12 large Nuevo Mexico or California red chile pods
2 pasilla pods
3 ancho pods
6 guajillo pods
4 tbls adobo from canned chipotles
4 cups boiling water
1 Remove stems from chilies. Tear the chilies into 1/2 inch pieces and combine in a heatproof bowl. Pour water over chilies, stir well and let stand for at least two hours, stirring occasionally
2. Drain the chiles, reserving the liquid
3. Puree the solids in a food processor until smooth
4. Stir in the reserved liquid and the adobo from the chipoltes
Wear rubber gloves when handling any chiles, until you know you can do so without discomfort
Use one cup paste for 1/3 cup dry chili powder in any recipe.

President’s Column by Merril Gordon
I know! I take up lots of space and use
extra resources. Sure was apparent
standing next to that Kingston kid and
his teenage buddies in line to register
for the Go Kart Enduro. I‟m pretty sure
I‟ve got one hundred pounds on each of
them. And then there is Dan Jardine,
not exactly small fry either. Somehow I
figure we wouldn‟t be in contention for
the trophy even though our other team
drivers Rico Chiarelli, Tony Schmid, and
Bill Richardson are of a more average
size and thus not such a burden to those
limited horsepower go karts. And while
Mirko may not be quite as small as
some of those F1 drivers, he‟s not so big
that he can‟t give Will Kingston and his
buds a run for the lead. Especially with
the extra seat time he‟s had on race-
tracks. But back to my team, team
Scuderia Alfisti I think we did a yeo-
man‟s job of keeping the kart going but
there was no way us two big guys were-
n‟t more than moving chicanes. I just
waved those scrawny punks (Mirko &
Will) by when the track straightened
out. Rico, Tony and Bill had a better
chance, but many of the opposition had
practiced before hand, and it was obvi-
ous some drivers with locker space at
the track were more than fast. No prob-
lem, I had fun and I‟m pretty sure eve-
ryone else did as well.
You know what I hate? I hate being tri-
ple booked. Especially when I‟ve missed
an event twice already. It‟s happened
again. The chili cook-off is Sunday Feb-
ruary 26, Dillon‟s last basketball game is
also that afternoon, and I have a morning test session
going over flap/slat functionality on that newest air-
plane derivative that will be delivered sometime in the
future. After two no shows I don‟t think Fred and
Kathy are going to believe me when I tell them I can‟t
make it again. I better have my kid call them instead.
Anyone see magazine reports on the new Scion
(Toyota) FR-S / Subaru BRZ? For those not in the
know it‟s a compact 2 (+2 pretend) seater that is 1”
shorter, 4 ½” wider, 1 ½” lower in height and a 6 ½”
longer wheel base compared to a US Alfetta. It‟s got a
2.0L flat four – six speed Subaru drive train and Toyota
designed chassis. The estimated weight is 2700 lbs
(like the Italians they probably lie). It‟s got an inter-
esting spec in that the center of gravity is 18.1” above
the ground. This is nearly an inch lower than the Por-
sche Cayman, already a quite low to the ground car. Ouch!
Anyone over at Fiat group headquarters notice this car? Its F/R
weight distribution is 53%/47% and under steers a little, but has
enough power to bring out the rear with the throttle. The tach is
properly in the center with a big sweep then flanked on either
side with speedo on the left and two small gauges on the right.
Didn‟t I write about a car somewhat like this last year? Come on
Fiat/Alfa Romeo/Maserati/Lancia/Chrysler and who ever is under
the Italian umbrella these days. Let‟s get a car out there that
will compete and with added Italian flare. I‟m calling you out
Sergio Marchionne. The Japanese are dropping their pants and
showing the Italians their BA‟s.

Though a number of our members enjoy track days and a few actually race
cars on tracks, most of us get to experience car races from either the grand-
stands or our couch. This is especially true with regards to major race events
like the 24 Hours at Daytona, or the 24 Hours at Le Mans.
Our March meeting will be a chance to hear more detail about what it is like to
experience that level of racing from the heart of the crew. Our guest speaker
will be our long time club member, Doc Doolittle, who has supported the Team
Seattle efforts for many years. He will share some of what it takes just to get a
team to the race like Daytona, to qualify, to start, and if possible… to finish.
When: March 13th 6:30 Dinner 7:30-9:30 Meeting
Where: Lombardi’s Cucina 695 NW Gilman Blvd., Issaquah 98027 425-391-9097 http://www.lombardiscucina.com
Lombardi‟s is working hard to provide us a nice location, good service, and
good food… I think they‟ve improved the quality lately and the way to find out
is sample some. Take the time to attend and enjoy hearing about Doc‟s per-
sonal view from inside Team Seattle / Dempsey Racing. This is a rare treat!

Just the Facts...
After staying on the NY Times best seller list for a very long
time, the book about Enzo the amazing thoughtful, kind,
and sometimes funny dog, comes to a local theater as a
live play. (The movie version is supposedly in the works
but we‟ll see that when it happens.) Written by the local
author, Garth Stein, the story follows Denny through his
challenges of following his talent to race cars while bal-
anced against the rest of the challenges life can toss at us.
Told through the eyes of his trusty companion, Enzo, we
see a refreshing perspective. If you haven‟t read the book,
I cannot recommend it any stronger.
Now, the Seattle Center House Theater has the play of it
starting April 17th and going until May 13th.

Each year we break out the green and head to the Faherty‟s for a wee bit o‟ the
Irish. The 2012 St Paddy‟s Party will be held on March 24th. Not only will Joe
& Lynn Faherty be their usual wonderful hosts, but we‟ll also have Steve Harrold
providing music! The festivities start around 5:30 Plan to bring a side dish to
share, while you are sampling the rest of the great food & drink.
The address: 768 6th Ave Fox Island, WA 98333 (For estimating your
time, this location is about 30 minutes drive after crossing the Tacoma Narrows
Bridge. ) Follow the gravel drive until it starts downhill and you‟ll find the house
on your left. Call 253 549 2082 if you are having a challenge finding the party.
Yes, that is a General Lee paint scheme on an Alfa 8C parked at the Balocco test track in Italy. The rumor is that the car is used by Testers and not a customer car. If true, it shows that someone at Alfa Romeo has an odd sense of humor.
In mid February, Stefano Agazzi at Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the Museo Storico,
filled with great Alfa Romeos, is still closed for “maintenance”
with no estimated re-opening in sight.

GoKart Enduro WrapUp
It is nice when we get to have a ton of fun and simultane-
ously do something very positive for others… The 2012 Go-
Kart Enduro was this great combination. Mirko Freguia once
again put on a great race event at the SyKart indoor karting
location in Tukwila, like he has done a few times before. The
big difference this time was the event also served as a fund
raiser for the Bradley family.
If you‟ve been to one of our lapping days, you have probably
crossed paths with Scott Bradley who is a constraint fixture
helping as an instructor for us. What you may not know is
that his daughter Kathryn, or Panda to those close to her,
has fought a rare form of brain cancer for most of her 20
years of life. 2012 started with a chance, perhaps a long
shot treatment that might really help beat the cancer. The
treatment wasn‟t covered by insurance so Mirko setup this
event to be a fundraiser to help the family cover some of the
costs, and to make a real difference in Panda‟s life.
Sponsors jumped in to provide food, t-shirts, trophies, pay
fees and cover costs. Then came the teams and entrant
money along with lap sponsorship. It was a larger effort than previous years but well worth it. Unfortu-
nately, as the gokart event approached, Panda lost her battle as the Bradley family lost their precious daugh-
ter. Though certainly not the outcome any of us would have wanted, the event went on. Now, the fund-
raiser focus was to assist the family with the already incurred medical expenses at the very tough time for
them. With the help and generosity of a number of people, $3700 was raised in Panda‟s name.
You might think that this would cast a somber tone on the race day, but it was not to be. The Bradley family
came to the event, spoke to everyone and shared their appreciation, and enthusiasm for what we were do-
ing. The personal side of our club relationships was out for all to see. So was the usual competitive side!
The race itself started with a Le Mans style standing start.
The drivers ran to their parked gokarts, belted up, and
took off. The first corner is survival of the fittest but after
a few laps the traffic thins a little as the faster, smoother
drivers start to pull ahead. The indoor track is probably a
little less than a quarter mile long, with a series of twist-
ing left and right corners connected by a few short
straights. It takes a little under a minute per lap so a 2
hour enduro should complete around 100 laps when you consider
pit stop delays. The gokarts are 6 HP gas engine, that tend to not
over power the driver, but in turn, slow a bit trying to carry the
200+ pounds of many of us in the club. This becomes an issue
only from the competitive side. Each team had to have at least 4
drivers and each had to drive a minimum of 15 minutes.

with, and when to pit was every bit as intense as the driv-
ing style, track line, or braking technique. The racing was
close with a number of lead changes both during passing
and during pit stops. No one team dominated the race.
After an hour it was clear that 6 of the 10 teams was
slightly more dominant but any of them had a clear
chance. The last hour ticked down as the race enthusiasm
increased, evidenced by the noise volume from the crowd.
Though excellent food was setup, provided by the great
team from Las Margaritas, few headed in to eat since the
racing was too close to walk away from.
As the white flag
waved, signaling the
last lap and the end of 2
intense hours, the 1st
place team carefully
drove their last 50 sec-
onds making sure to not
make a mistake with the
2nd and 3rd place teams
still within 1 lap of them.
As the checkered flag
waved and the teams fin-
ished the cool down lap,
the end results were:
1st = HopeWerks (Lisa West, Randy Olivarez, Jake Preston, Travis Hensen)
2nd = Squadra Veloce (Matt Earnest, Pete Bristow, Mark Robinson, Shen Wen Seow, Rob George)
3rd = Team Xccel (Davin Sturdivant, Cindy Rio, Javier Cant-Lucero, Steven Taylor)
4th = Team Cohesive (Noah Shinn, Nicolas Hostein, Karthik Anbalagan, Aaron Marks)
5th = TRE/Ingram Racing (Will Kingstone, Taylor Clark, Kyle Byers, Chris & John Scragg)
6th = Team Copperfin (James Colborn, Steve Schaeffer, Erico Macedo, Rob Gilliom, Mirko Freguia)
7th = Continuant Boyz (Hasan Avdic, Jon Chase, Alex Bedford, Travis Henson)
8th = Docs of Speed (Eddie Lo, Will Kellog, Stephen Poore, Orestes Molina)
9th = Scuderia Alfisti (Tony Schmid, Merril Gordon, Bill Richards, Dan Jardine, Rico Chiarelli )
10th = Team Pandamonium (Dennis Tyler, John Lavenda, Lloyd Womack, Todd Orler, Jim Cissel)
What a great way to spend the day! Thanks to Mirko, and to all the people who raced, donated, cheered on
the teams or helped in any way. All the best to Scott Bradley and his family as well.

There are 20 people in the area who have new
driving skills, thanks to the NWARC Driver‟s School
held March 3rd at Bremerton Motorsports Park.
The event got off to a late start but went very well
overall. From the many cones that laid out the
course to the water truck, good lunches, and won-
derful instructors, the students had lots of good
experiences. Nice way to start the track season.
Registration is now open. Cost is $140.00. http://nwarc.motorsportreg.com/
If you've ever wanted to drive your car at the track but were afraid to because you did not have any track ex-
perience, then this is the school for you. If you have been to the track a few times and are still a bit puzzled
about how to improve your driving skills, then this school is for you. If you have driven at tracks many times
but find new courses difficult to learn, then this school is for you. Bremerton Raceway provides a safe environ-
ment for you to learn the skills needed to participate in Performance Driving Events.
This school focuses on basic car handling techniques and the physics involved in your vehicles reactions. You
will learn how to judge and execute the correct line through any corner and how to slow down to drive faster,
plus much more. The morning will be spent on exercises that focus on specific aspects of driving and the af-
ternoon will be spent using your newly learned skills on the track. Instructors will be available to ride with you
and coach you at each station. Please make sure that your car is in proper condition. Remember although it
will be inspected, you are still responsible for your car being safe.

For Sale: 1978 Spider In her day she won People‟s Choice at a concours, led wine tours, and fueled that shifty Italian mystique with her intense lip-red gloss and top-down black cap. She was a hugger whose curves were perfection. Her embrace would caress you with tanned suppleness, and she responded to your every maneuver with a zooming passion
that left you exhausted yet with a hunger for more; she could steer you astray, and her idle purr could drive you wild. The lady had class! Alas, cruising home from clubbing all these years and living on the streets has been cruel. She can still
run with the pack but is embarrassed at her appearance; she‟s mechanically healthy but she‟s lost her ferocity for ve-locity. She‟s still loved, but her tattered wardrobe, rag tag cap, and furrowed countenance needs a makeover; she‟s fighting melanoma. In the right hands she could be rejuvi-nated to her prior exotic beauty, where her maturity would be admired. Her family says this they cannot do. Can YOU? Do
you have the heart to adopt her into your family and drive her to your home for long-term care? It starts with a serious offer at or about $2,400 directed to Brenda or Bruce Blair in West Seattle, (206) 938-8190 or [email protected] .
