Breaking down barriers

Shuffling feet and the general buzz of conversation made lectures a trial for Gemma Long duringher first degree. She suffers from sensory overload connected to her autism, which was onlydiagnosed after she graduated. But when she started a teacher-training course years later, shereceived access to software to help her cope with dyslexia and found it transformative.

“I struggled to understand the point of lectures until I got that software,” recalls Long. “I didn’trealise how much useful information was in them. As someone who is hypersensitive to noise Ispend most of my time in lectures trying to filter out the background noise, which means I miss muchof what the lecturer is saying. Being able to audio record the lectures and listen back to them in asilent room meant I was finally able to digest the content.”

Technology is breaking down barriers faced by students with disabilities. Online journal articlesnow mean that those with visual impairments can zoom in to read printed text or convert it to easier-to-read formats such as braille. Universities are also increasingly recording lectures which studentscan replay at their own pace, which benefits students with dyslexia or attention deficit disorder too.

According to Alistair McNaught, a digital learning consultant, universities are increasingly trackinghow students learn, and then directing them to the accessible resources most suited to their personalneeds. McNaught appreciates the way assistive technologies can help all students — whether theyhave a disability or not — but stresses that it’s important for universities to get the basics right first.

“Universities just need to get better at promoting the support that’s already there,” says GemmaLong. “Making specialist software and training generally available, rather than confining it to disabledstudents, makes it more widely known, as well as removes stigma.” For someone like her, whoreceived her diagnoses late, it would have been particularly helpful.

Universities are slowly tackling the barriers for disabled students. There’s more yet to come: theprospect of virtual reality – particularly when it comes to fieldwork. “It can be incredibly difficult for adisabled student to get a wheelchair on to a salt marsh,” says Piers Wilkinson, a researcher in thearea. “But if the learning aims are being immersed in an environment, and making discoveries, virtualreality can achieve that.”

Plastic bags may smell like food

to hungry sea turtles, a new study says

A loggerhead* turtle swims in an experimental arena.

Although sea turtles have been chomping down on plastic bags for years, scientists didn't know why– until now. Plastic bags may smell like a tasty treat because of the bacteria and algae that accumulateon them.

In a new study published on Monday in the journal Current Biology, scientists presented captive seaturtles with multiple different smells.

The turtles responded almost identically to the smell of their food as they did to the smell of a plasticbag that had been soaked in water, according to Matthew Savoca, one of the study’s authors.

In fact, the turtles kept their noses out of the water three times as long to smell the plastic bagscompared to control smells.

Nick Mallos, senior director of Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas program, says this studyprovides alarming new information about why turtles eat plastic.

Until now, there were just theories that sea turtles may have accidentally gotten entangled in theplastic, or perhaps they mistook plastic bags for juicy jellyfish.

Savoca states that the problem is more complex than a simple mistake by curious sea creatures. Hetheorizes that turtles have evolved to pursue certain smells that signal food, and ___________instinctively move towards the smell of the algae and bacteria when they accumulate on plastic in theocean.

“The ocean is not this large grocery store where there's food everywhere, so these animals have tobecome hyper-specialized to survive,” he says.

This issue is a concern for other animals, too. Past research suggests that sea birds and somespecies of fish may also be tricked by their instincts into eating plastic, says Savoca.

Nonetheless, Mallos says that sea turtles' habit of eating plastic is especially concerning because allseven species of sea turtles are endangered.

Sea turtles are threatened in multiple ways by the 8 million tons of plastic that enter ocean watersannually, according to Mallos.

When they fill up their stomachs with plastic, their bodies are tricked into thinking they are full, causing them to slowly starve to death.

In other instances, harder pieces of plastic puncture the turtles as they try to swallow, or get caughtin their throats.

Luckily, Mallos said there is a very simple solution: reducing plastic consumption and recycling.

MÓDULO 58 Text

Online EducationA new kind of online school wants to teach nursing, and more

“I have been this close to buying a nursing school.” This is not a sentence you expect to hearfrom a startup founder. Nursing seems a world away from the high-tech innovation of Silicon Valley.Austen Allred, boss of Lambda School, sees things differently. His two-year-old firm matcheslabour supply and demand by providing fast, efficient training to potential employees. It offers fiveonline courses that prepare candidates to write software at technology firms. Training nurses, moreof which are sorely needed to care for America’s ageing population, is not an illogical next step.

Instead of responding to the threat of joblessness posed by automation with a universal basicincome, Mr Allred wants to help people to switch jobs faster. Unlike most online courses, Lambdadoes not charge students up front to attend (though admissions are competitive) and online tuitionis live and interactive, not recorded. Full-time students attend for nine months, Monday to Friday,8am to 5pm San Francisco time. Latecomers risk falling behind. In most recent classes, 85% ofstudents who began a course finished it.

The school only starts getting paid back for its services after its students have landed a jobwhich pays them more than $50,000 a year, something Lambda expends significant energy to helpthem do. Around 70% of those enrolled do so within six months of graduation. Lambda then getsa cut of about a sixth of their income for the next two years, until they have paid about $30,000.(Or they can pay $20,000 up front.)

MÓDULO 59 Text

Britain’s Green Party Proposes A Three-Day Weekend

With the prospect of two bank holidays on the horizon, Britons have an embarrassment of longweekends to savour. For Caroline Lucas, the joint leader of the Green Party, that is not enough: shewants three-day weekends every week. In March she announced at her party’s conference that theGreens were exploring such a policy, which could go in their manifesto soon.

The Greens reckon that lopping a day off the working week would begin to redress the inequalitiesbetween men and women, since both paid and unpaid work might then be shared more evenly. Peoplecould do more of what they love and would be less stressed. It would reduce Britain’s carbon footprint. And it could even boost the country’s productivity.

Some evidence supports this. A paper published in 2014 by Stanford University shows that reducingworking hours can be good for productivity. Between 2007 and 2011 the American state of Utahadjusted the working week for state employees, with longer days from Monday to Thursday, and Fridayoff. In ten months the shift saved the state $1,8m in energy costs.

But the Greens would go further than simply redistributing working hours over four days: theysuggest that people could work fewer hours overall. Since not everyone can afford to take a 20% paycut, “wages must go up correspondingly” – courtesy of employers and the state – “to ensure no oneloses out”. The 26m employed Britons earn on average £90 ($112) a day. Covering the shortfall wouldcost around £120bn a year, equivalent to the budget of the National Health Service.

The Greens’ proposals encounter two problems. First, the theory. They argue that the reduced hoursworked by some could be redistributed to others in order to lower underemployment. They thus fall preyto the notion that there is a fixed amount of work to be done which can be shared out in different waysto create fewer or more jobs. In fact, if people worked fewer hours, demand would drop, and so fewerworking hours would be on offer.

Second, the cost. Increased productivity could cover some of the costs of paying a five-day wagefor a four-day week, suggests Saray Lyall of the New Economics Foundation, a think-tank. She points toa Glasgow marketing company that did just that, and experienced a 30% leap in productivity. But thatis an astonishing increase to expect in every area.

The Greens say they are in the early stages of exploring the idea and have not yet produced firmcostings. It might be useful to do so before next local elections. That leaves little time – but presumablythe party’s policymakers will raise their productivity accordingly.

DO PEOPLE ONLY USE 10 PERCENT OF THEIR BRAINS?

By Robynne Boyd

The human brain is complex. Along with performing millionsof mundane acts, it composes concertos, issues manifestos andcomes up with elegant solutions to equations. It’s the wellspringof all human feelings, behaviors, experiences as well as therepository of memory and self-awareness. So it’s no surprise thatthe brain remains a mystery unto itself.

Adding to that mystery is the contention that humans “only”employ 10 percent of their brain. If only regular folk could tap thatother 90 percent, they too could become savants who rememberπ to the twenty-thousandth decimal place or perhaps even havetelekinetic powers.

Though an alluring idea, the “10 percent myth” is so wrongit is almost laughable, says neurologist Barry Gordon at JohnsHopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. Although there’s nodefinitive culprit to pin the blame on for starting this legend, thenotion has been linked to the American psychologist and authorWilliam James, who argued in The Energies of Men that “Weare making use of only a small part of our possible mental andphysical resources.” It’s also been associated with AlbertEinstein, who supposedly used it to explain his cosmic toweringintellect.

The myth’s durability, Gordon says, stems from people’sconceptions about their own brains: they see their ownshortcomings as evidence of the existence of untapped graymatter. This is a false assumption. What is correct, however, isthat at certain moments in anyone’s life, such as when we aresimply at rest and thinking, we may be using only 10 percent ofour brains.

“It turns out though, that we use virtually every part of thebrain, and that most of the brain is active almost all the time,”Gordon adds. “Let’s put it this way: the brain represents threepercent of the body’s weight and uses 20 percent of the body’senergy.”

Although it’s true that at any given moment all of the brain’sregions are not concurrently firing, brain researchers usingimaging technology have shown that, like the body’s muscles, most are continually active over a 24-hour period.

Solar energy is one of the most resourceful sources of energyfor the future. One of the reasons for this is that the total energywe receive each year from the Sun is around 35.000 times thetotal energy used by man. However, about 1/3 of this energy iseither absorbed by the outer atmosphere or reflected back intospace.

Solar energy is presently being used on a smaller scale infurnaces for homes and to heat up swimming pools. On a largescale use, solar energy could be used to run cars, power plantsand space ships.

Children and GunsTo the Editor: Re “Girl’s Death by Gunshot Is Rejected asSymbol”:I find it abhorrent that the people of Burkesville, Ky., are not willingto learn a lesson from the tragic shooting of a 2-year-old girl by her5-year-old brother. I am not judging their lifestyle of introducingguns to children at a young age, but I do feel that it’s irresponsible

not to practice basic safety with anything potentially lethal – guns, knives, fire and so on. How can anyone justify leaving guns lyingaround, unlocked and possibly loaded, in a home with two youngchildren? I wish the family of the victim comfort during this difficulttime, but to dismiss this as a simple accident leaves open thepotential for many more such “accidents” to occur. I hope thisdoesn’t have to happen several more times for legislators to realizethat something needs to be changed. Emily Loubaton
