At the service of vehicle fleets

High-performing products are no longer enough: today we must help our customers to optimize efficiency and reduce costs. To do this, Pirelli has developed a series of solutions, running from roadside assistance in case of breakdown to centralised invoicing, and from maintenance of the tyre fleet to retreading (cold and hot)

Optimize efficiency and increase turnover: this is what the vehicle fle-ets of today are asking for. And all Pirelli’s ef-

forts – as regards both the product and the development of services – are focused on “accompanying” the cu-stomers and helping them reduce the TCO (total cost of ownership). This objective involves all the vehicle fleets which, however, achieve it in dif-ferent ways in terms of choosing tyres, and Pirelli has worked to provide the possibility of ad hoc solutions to all.For owner-drivers and small fleets, the

principal purchasing criterion is the price/performance ratio of the pro-duct. For this reason, our range has recently been expanded with the For-mula brand products. As for medium/large vehicle f leets (those with more than five vehicles), attention is directed towards pro-ducts that allow a reduction in fuel consumption and the cost per km, up to the broader concept of a combined ‘product and services’ package. This is where the Pirelli Fleet Solutions range comes in, including Fleet Mana-gement, Fleet Check, and Cyber Fle-et... everything that makes it possible

to offer the customers “day by day” as-sistance. These are services that help the fleet in the management, monito-ring and optimisation of tyre perfor-mance. This translates into greater sa-fety and lower fuel consumption. And that’s not all: the CQ24 Internatio-nal, our breakdown service - makes it possible to perform transport within the anticipated timeframes and con-ditions. For the larger vehicle f leets, we go even further: here, the customer does not only require services, although as-suming responsibility for the purchase and the management of the tyres. Ope-

At the Essen Show (Germany) Pirelli not only introduced the latest line of products, but also took the opportunity to launch its new international communication campaign. This is represented by an image which features two mutually reinforcing aspects - the power of the vehicle, and the technology of the tyre. The relationship of these two elements creates a “continuum” between business and tyre.

The power of ideasration on the basis of the cost per kilo-metre is also required. What does this mean? It means using a tyre assistan-ce service (both on new and retreaded tyres) managed directly by Pirelli. We assume responsibility – through our partners – of all the maintenance and replacement activity of the tyre fleet, monitoring of the kilometres driven, and optimization of the service provi-ded. At this point, Pirelli guarantees an optimal cost per kilometre. Of course, this has made it necessary to identify a series of partners in the various countries to supply services, and over the last few years we have worked hard to achieve this. But we soon saw the results: for example, this year in Germany a contract was signed with the Rewe fleet (400 vehicles) ba-sed on which Pirelli manages 2,000 new and retreaded tyres. Through the German partner services are provided running from breakdown services to centralised invoicing, and from the in-ventory of the tyres to performance measurement through the Fleet Check tool. Similar initiatives are taking sha-pe in other European countries, with a lot of effort also being focused on the implementation of the IT structures. But Pirelli has also started to move beyond the European borders. In Bra-zil, where it is a co-leaders in the Truck sector and a leader in Agro, over 20% of the sales/month involve medium/large vehicle fleets, which also require services. And we are working on being able to supply them directly on site. Then, we must not forget Cyber Fle-et, the revolutionary system which, thanks to the TMS sensor located in-side the tyre, is capable of monitoring pressure and temperature in real time, without the need for staff in the field. Today, this device is mounted dyna-mically on over 150 trucks around the world, for a total of about forty fleets. Of these, 22 operate in Brazil (both for shipment of merchandise and tran-sporting people). These fleets have seen that this solu-tion makes it possible to considera-bly lower the costs for maintenance services and for fuel, which together with the tyre costs represent about 40% of the total. The static solution, on the other hand, has been adopted by around 100 vehicles, again in Brazil. And there, in fact, we are developing a specially designed solution for vehi-

cles used to harvest sugar cane. There are also great innovations on the retreading front. Pirelli has always concentrated on the cold technique, where the role of the company is two-fold: on the one hand it “signs” the de-sign of the bands (which are then pro-duced by Marangoni) and on the other handles the certification of the retrea-ders (today it works with a network of about 170 authorised dealers around the world, with a focus on South Ame-rica). The model works, and it will so-

on be extended to other markets. At the same time, last May at the Essen Show, Novatread was introduced: the range of entirely mould-cured retrea-ded tyres with original Pirelli designs. This is a hot-retreading product which will be marketed directly by Pirelli in Italy starting from this September. One of the objectives is to demonstrate, on-ce again, the excellent retreadability of the Series 01 tyres, which thanks to hot-retreading technology can offer double the mileage.

Nunzio Mallardi is 46 years old and has thou-sands of kilometres un-der his belt. Because he began climbing into his

trucks and grinding asphalt as a young lad. His father Andrea, who recently passed away, had established a trans-port company which, at its founding in 1973, had three vehicles. In 1980 these grew to 15, and today the vast yard in Santeramo in Colle, about fifty kilome-tres from Bari, sees the movement of 45 tractor units and 67 semi-trailers. The company is called Carmagn e Ca-rone, but the trucks do not bear logos: Nunzio is unassuming, he doesn’t like to show off and advertise himself. In-deed, he has no need to. With approxi-mately 90 employees, his company specializes in cold freight transport. Every week the vehicles leave Santer-amo for Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Spain, England, etc. They car-ry fruits and vegetables grown in Puglia to the far reaches of Europe and return with meats for the Italian market. Despite the size, Carmagn e Carone can be called a family business. “I handle everything. I manage the ac-tivity from A to Z. I always know exact-ly where my trucks are”, says Nunzio Mallardi. “In the office, my wife Mina handles cargo movement. And my nephew Donato Cacciapaglia is my al-

ter-ego. The drivers? I can almost call them my brothers. Some have been working here for 20-30 years. When I was young, I travelled with them. We grew up together. And that is how it should be because, during transport, problems can arise involving times, payments, management... You need to have people you can trust at the wheel.”Nunzio’s mother, Carmela, comes in with a cup of coffee and tarallucci bis-cuits. Her home is right there, inside the yard where the vehicles are parked. This family is married to the job, and not just metaphorically. The furniture is bedecked by an array of picture frames deck with images of her husband An-drea. “He was a great example for me”, says Nunzio Mallardi, his eyes a bit red. Carmagn has always mounted Pire-lli tyres on a good portion of its fleet, and now the “long P” tyres account for nearly 90% of the total. And, during our interview, Mallardi explained in detail why this was not a fluke choice.

What factors most affect your choice of tyres?Naturally I keep an eye on fuel savings, but also on reliability: we transport per-ishable goods and we cannot afford to let problems delay the journey. In other words, I carefully evaluate the quality/price ratio when making the choice.

And how do you make this evaluation? In October I install winter tyres on all vehicles and use them for the en-tire year. Our trucks are a perfect test bench for tyre performance and fuel consumption because they always travel the same route, over the same roads and with the same drivers at the wheel. On average, every vehicle trav-els 240,000 kilometres a year. And I draw up extremely precise tables re-cording all items to be used to make a

comparison. The drivers, too, do their part, providing interesting ideas. So, too, do the five people working in our work-shop: here everything is performed in-house and thus nothing escapes us. Over the years, I have tested products from nearly all manufacturers.

The result? For some time now we have been us-ing Pirelli tyres and they account for nearly 90% of all tyres we use. Because

No. 18 SEPTEMBER 2014 7

En_06_08_CaseHistory-P3K.indd 7 12/09/14 22.12

Page 8: INGLESE.. - Pirelli · Marketing Director, ... En_04_05_editoriale P3K.indd 4 13/09/14 00.17. INGLESE 5 European quarterly of the Pirelli Group

I have seen a marked improvement in the product over the last two years. The new 01 Series tyres are practically per-fect. Mounted on the front axle, the FH:0 — sizes 385/65 R 22.5 and 385/55 R 22.5 — are soft, flexible and wear is quite even. Just to give you an example, after driving 240,000 kilometres, the tyre still has 30% of its tread. And my table shows me that this is not the case with the competition.

And, in terms of grip? For three years now I have been using the TW:01 — sizes 315/70 and 315/80 R 22.5. I would like to tell you a story: last winter, near Stuttgart, there was a blizzard and the roads were icy. One of our vehicles was at a gas station, along with other vehicles. When, when they departed, no one could climb the ramp and get back on the highway, not even the cars. Everyone was blocked. Except our truck, who proceeded merrily on its way. In short, these are important things. These tyres have superb grip on any type of road: dry, wet, snow, ice... Certainly, when the temperature rises above 20 degrees, they suffer a bit in terms of tread wear. But, in terms of safety, there are no problems: in fact, I tend to use them all year round.

Doesn’t using winter tyres all year round affect fuel consumption?I made a comparison between Pire-lli tyres and those of the competition. When compared with similarly used tyres, consumption was lower, even when winter tyres were used all year. Then, for the semi-trailers, I now mount the ST:01 Neverending, and here again I would like to mention an interesting field test. I mounted these tyres on a vehicle and calculated precisely the cost of fuel for a 4,700 kilometre trip.

The next week, I installed a competi-tors tyres on the same vehicle, cover-ing the same trip with the same driver at the wheel. Well: with the Pirelli tyres, on that single trip, there was a savings of approximately 100 euro in fuel.

That’s no trifling amount, when tak-en over a tyre’s entire lifespan. In this light, how long do tyres remain in ser-vice on Carmagn e Carone vehicles?I must say that the Pirelli tyres also of-fer very even wear. I have realized this because not only are my vehicles very heavy (GVW: 40 tons), but given the hooks (used for transporting meats), they have some problems with trans-verse oscillation. Well, each tyre can handle approximately 280,000 kilo-metres, plus another 40-50,000 after retreading.

Do you use retread tyres?Only new tyres. Because it is inevi-table that the casings are subject to

stress after having covered 300,000 kilometres under constantly chang-ing temperature conditions. In winter our trucks leave Bari where it is sunny and the thermometer reads 15-20 de-grees, to reach Germany in the snow. It is our company policy not to use re-treads. And for the same reason, the ve-hicles are changed every 4-5 years. We acquire 8-10 new vehicles practically every year.

Everyone is talking about a downturn in transport. How do you see the Car-magn e Carone’s future?First of all, we are planning to open a new, larger site where we can concentrate all activities which are now separated: of-fices, fleet and workshop. It is true, the transport industry currently has many problems. We can say that I would like, if not to grow, at least not to lose standing. Therefore we are focusing, above all, on reducing costs. And, when the recovery comes, we will be ready.

“The Pirelli tyres also have very even wear, despite the trucks having problems of transverse oscillation.”

Nunzio Mallardi regularly tests the tyres that he uses. And he has no doubts: “I compared Pirelli tyres with those of the competition. Against tyres which had undergone similar use, consumption was lower, even when using the winter tyres all year, like I do.”

Today, around six mil-lion lorries and buses are driving around Eu-rope equipped with a ta-chograph. This device

should make it possible to check dri-vers’ compliance with rules regar-ding road transport, and has been compulsory since 2006. Times are changing and technologies are beco-ming increasingly developed: this is why in 2011 the European Commis-sion proposed the adoption of new, more sophisticated devices, capable of reducing fraud and administrati-ve charges, guaranteeing compliance with the rules relative to driving and rest times. And therefore greater safe-ty on the roads. Tampered tachographs in fact allow the transport companies to ask the dri-vers to drive longer, placing their safe-ty and that of other road users at risk. This also leads to unfair competition, given that the personnel costs repre-sent between 30% and 50% of total bu-siness costs. At the beginning of this year, the agre-ement on the new legislation was ap-proved. MEPs have said “yes”: new, in-

telligent tachographs, capable of pre-cisely registering speed, start and end of every run through modern satellite technology, will be installed on heavy vehicles. In this way it will be possible to monitor the driving and resting con-dition of the driver. In addition, the ta-chographs will make it possible for the police forces to also download the da-ta remotely via wireless transmissions. This means that road checks can be reduced, avoiding fruitless checking (with an annual saving of around Euro 34.5 million) and allowing the patrols to concentrate on vehicles with suspi-cious data. However, no fine or penalty

can be administered based solely on the remote check. After the EU Commission has establi-shed the technical specifications of the appliances, these must be installed on new vehicles over 3.5 tons within three years. Within the next 15 years, the ta-chographs must be installed on all he-avy vehicles. However, Brussels has provided for so-me exemptions. Lorries under 7.5 tons used within a 100 kilometre radius of the business location, in fact, do not have to use the tachograph, provided that driving the vehicle is not the dri-ver’s principal role..

le the driver wants steering precision. Pirelli has drawn on its vast experien-ce and innovative technologies, fur-ther perfecting its products for Coach vehicles with an eye to balancing per-formance. The innovations for this product line involve both the struc-ture and materials: the reinforced he-el and new compounds increase tyre life, offering greater mileage and retre-adability.The coach sector is an ever-evolving market. If vehicle manufacturers are increasingly focused on keeping en-vironmental impacts down by imple-menting greater technological innova-tion, tyre manufacturers must also take this into account. Then there are other aspects that must not be overlooked such as the recent Euro VI regulations

that impose a different vehicle configu-ration and require greater load capaci-ties for front tyres. For this reason, the 295/80 R 22.5 FH:01 Coach tyre has a higher load index of 154/149 MIn general, vehicles designated for pas-senger transport are fitted with the sa-me tyres on all axles, following a sche-me that is closer to the world of Cars ra-ther than that of Trucks. This is partly a question of acoustic comfort (drive axle tyres are actually noisier). Howe-ver, when necessary, drive axles must be fitted with tyres that guarantee gre-ater traction, for example in the winter. And the TH:01 is perfect in this case: gi-ven its deep siping, it ensures high grip on wet roads and short braking distan-ces, and, besides the M+S marking, it al-so bears the 3PMSF marking.

The new H:01 Coach tyres introduce a reinforced heel into the already resistant structure of the Series 01 — which features SATT, HBW (hexagonal bead wire), FRC (fully rubberized cord) and BWC (bead wrapped chafer) — to further improve resistance and thus offer greater retreadability while still ensuring comfort with a structure designed to better absorb road irregularities and reduce rolling noise.

FH:01 CoachThe geometry of the grooves ensures a more progressive response and greater steering precision; the protective ejectors at the bottom of the side grooves prevent stones from getting trapped, thus guaranteeing casing integrity and better retreadability; and finally, the patented Pirelli RSR (rotated shoulder rib) ensures optimal distribution of footprint contact pressure which means uniform wear and high mileage.

TH:01 COACHThis tyre features deep siping that guarantees traction throughout its entire life, good grip on wet roads and reduced braking distances The close proximity of the grooves and the high siping on the shoulder blocks guarantee lower mobility and heat generation, thus reducing rolling resistance and ensuring more uniform wear. Finally, the directional tread pattern offers better grip on the road, whether wet or dry. TH:01 COACH bears the 3PMSF marking (in addition to the M+S marking), thus guaranteeing adequate traction in snow.

A close-up look

on the market and in vehicles for this type of transport. The result is the H:01 Coach line: tyres conceived specifical-ly for passenger transport, particularly long-distance travel over long-haul ro-ads and highways that produce less se-vere wear. The FH:01 Coach products (already on the market) for all axles and the TH:01 (coming soon) specific for drive axles, have both been designed to meet the demands of a very particular cliente-le: fleet managers, drivers and passen-gers. Safety is the number one requirement for everyone; however, fleet managers also focus on low-cost management (high mileage, low consumption, low rolling resistance). The passenger demands comfort, whi-

Top performance in all of a tyre’s “lives”. This is the goal set out by Pirelli Life-cycle Management, with two solutions that extend

a tyre’s mileage beyond its “first life”, maximizing the fleets initial inves-tment for purchase of the tyres. The tyre manufacturer is keen on ma-king this happen, from the initial de-sign stage, its engineers have taken into account the variables that come into play throughout a tyre’s entire li-fespan, factors that play a fundamen-tal role during retreading. “We have achieved such quality” explains João Dias, Retread and Agro and Otr Marke-ting Manager of BU Industrial, “that to-day our tyres can be retreaded up to

three times, depending on how they are used”.Backed up by the high quality stan-dards of a cutting-edge structure — the Serie01 — beside the Novateck solution that has been available on the market for some time, in May, at the Fair in Es-sen, Pirelli introduced the Novatread.Novateck is the line of pre-moulded treads produced by our partner, Ma-rangoni, using the original Pirelli desig-ns. Thanks to constant improvement of the compounds, today these treads can offer mileage comparable to that of a new product. are seeking new partners”, says Dias. Through careful selection, Pirelli certi-fies the best operators on the territory. Qualitative monitoring occurs both during the procedure to select retrea-dable casings and during checks per-formed during the stages of retreading. “The Novateck line”, continues Dias “covers nearly all tread designs used in the 01 Series”. The bands reprodu-ce the original tread designs, main-taining the interaction between tread and casing, even after retreading. For this reason, the retreaded tyre delivers the same performance and quality as a new tyre. Thus far, we have spoken of retreading with pre-moulded treads. In September, Pirelli entered the busi-ness of hot retreading, starting to sell — for the moment just in Italy, — the new Novatread line of tyres, entirely mould-cure retreaded with original Pirelli casings. Therefore, original Pire-lli designs and only 01 Series casings which use all those technologies that prompt casing resistance beyond the first life: SATT (Spiral Advanced Te-chnology for Truck), hexagonal bead wire, fully rubberized cord, two-layer tread compound Despite the high retreadability index of the new Pirelli casings, before the rege-neration process they are subjected to careful checks. In addition to the quality of the casings, the use of tread band compounds for-mulated to provide optimum balance

between mileage, tread tear resistan-ce and low rolling resistance, as well as the original tread designs of the 01 Series range, make Novatread the ideal product for those looking for perfor-mance comparable to new tyres, at really great prices. The painstaking regeneration process, and the quality-control inspections conducted in accordance with Pirelli standards prior to the product going on sale, place the Novatread retreads among the top players in the market. Initially the Novatread line will be avai-lable in three sizes, for fitting on drive axles and trailers: 315/70 R 22.5 TH:01, 315/80 R 22.5 TR:01, 385/65 R 22.5 ST:01 BaseNaturally, the economic advantages of using retread tyres are undeniable. How much can be saved? “In determi-ning the savings, the first consideration is whether retreading is to be perfor-med on casings provided by the cus-tomer, or on casings purchased, pro-cessed and then sold by the retreader. In the former case, the tyre can cost up to 40% less than a new tyre; in the latter case up to 30% less”, calculates João Dias.Last but not least is the environmental factor: not only are the Pirelli Lifecycle Management solutions a concrete res-ponse to the market demand, they also make important strides in eco-sustai-nability. In fact, using retread tyres re-duces and delays the disposal of used tyres in the environment.

Would you shortly introduce yourself and your position in the company? I started working at TimoCom in 2007, so I have been here for seven years now. Currently I am Chief Representa-tive as well as the company’s Director of Sales & Business Development.

Which is the activity of TimoCom? TimoCom is a Europe-wide IT servi-ce provider for the transport and lo-gistics sector. Our products cover the full supply and distribution chain, be-nefitting all those working in the sec-tor: transport operators, hauliers, loa-ders and large-scale distribution. More specifically, we provide two European-

level platforms: TC Truck&Cargo®, the market’s leading vehicle and freight exchanges, and TC eBid®, a transport tendering platform. The underlying principle behind a vehicle and freight exchange is easy to explain since ship-ping agents and hauliers know the si-tuation well. There are vehicle owners who don’t have the goods to transport, and vice versa. This is where the online freight exchange comes into play. The platform simplifies all negotiations between company and service pro-vider — for partial or full loads under long-term contracts — and this reduces the costs of the operations. It also sim-plifies business between shipping and

The education of young people is a fundamental aspect for TimoCom. For 2015, there are already 11 new apprenticeship programs at worksites.

The TimoCom freight and vehicle exchange facilitates relations and negotiations between companies and service providers, between shipping and logistics, and between industry and exchange companies.

logistics agents, and between indust-ry and the exchange. The end result is greater productivity and transparency.

How did this entrepreneurial adven-ture start? The TimoCom story started in 1997. At that time, the haulier Jens Thier-mann was looking for a European shipping sector platform but none of those available met his needs. He re-solved the problem by developing his own vehicle and freight exchange: TC Truck&Cargo®. And the name “Timo”? It is formed from the initials of the surnames of its founding members: Jens Thiermann and Jürgen Moorbrink. In just a few ye-ars the fledgling TimoCom grew into a medium-to-large enterprise.

TimoCom operates in Europe: in which countries and with how many employees? What role does the cen-tral office play as opposed to the de-centralized units?Today TimoCom has 400 employe-es in more than 30 countries. This e-nables us to offer our products in 24 languages and 44 countries. Our he-adquarters is located in Düsseldorf, Germany, but we also have three offi-ces: in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Given that our company has grown rapidly in the recent years, we decided to build a new headquarters

outside Düsseldorf, and the site is ne-arly finished.

What are the main IT products deve-loped by TimoCom, apart from the freight exchange, and how do they o-perate? As I was saying, TimoCom has set up TC eBid®, a platform that simplifies the transport-related processes between hauliers, logistics operators and in-dustry and commercial enterprises, ensuring greater productivity and transparency. Since September 2012,

TimoCom has also gone online with Europe’s largest warehousing exchan-ge. Here shipping agents and indu-strial operators can search among 30,000 warehouses and logistics fa-cilities. A more recent development is the eMap® program which offers cost calculation and route planning functions, as well as integrated tra-cking. This saves additional time and allows closer management of service availability. We currently have more than 92 IT providers integrated into the system. Our online transport di-rectory, Profile®, provides access to 33,000 transport and logistics opera-tors in Europe.

Who are your clients? They come in all different sizes: from large European logistics services to na-tional hauliers, from large fleets to indi-vidual truckers. And they are all equal-ly important to us, we serve each and every one in the same way.

How many offers are made daily, and how many users take advantage of the TimoCom services? Can you give a breakdown by country? We re cord 4 5 0,0 0 0 i nte r n at ion a l freight exchange and vehicles offers daily. Between 2012 and 2013, our vehi-cle and freight turnover grew 16.5%, that is 7.7 million contracts. In 2013, we reached a total of 54.7 million offers. And this growth was recorded in all European countries. We have appro-

ximately 100,000 users for a total of 33,000 companies.

How was TimoCom able to conquer the transport market and make its na-me known? What role did social me-dia play in this?TimoCom has been providing the transport and logistics sector with pri-me quality programs for more than 17 years, always aiming to increase effi-ciency. Consequently, our company has become a reliable partner for many companies. Our products can optimize vehicle usage, simplify of-fer management and ensure utmost transport safety. The thing that sets us apart from other medium-sized com-panies is the fact that we handle our marketing activities directly. These activities are planned and developed in-house. Moreover, we increasingly use social media to maintain relations with our customers. We have Facebo-ok pages in 18 countries and count mo-re than 55,000 fans in Europe.

In late 2009 TimoCom received the German Federal Employment Agency “Certificate for the promotion of young talent”. What does this mean?TimoCom has always worked effec-tively in the field of apprenticeships. We want to train young people so that they will be truly professional in the future. In the end, this is one of the in-struments that has enabled TimoCom to be so competitive. We consider trai-ning a fundamental part of our human resources area. Certification of the Ger-

man Federal Employment Agency is proof that we have created the ideal conditions for our junior employees. This honour has been — and still is — an incentive, prompting us to increasingly focus on youth employment in the futu-re. Indeed, for next year we have 11 ap-prenticeship programs in the pipeline.

TimoCom is also highly committed to environmental protection. Among o-ther things, it has reduced the electri-

city consumption of its entire IT struc-ture by 40%. What other major opera-tions have been completed?Cooperating with Nabu, a German en-vironmental protection association, to recover a part of the Rhine river; u-sing 100% renewable energy sources (saving 400 tons of CO2 annually); reducing the overall IT infrastructu-re electricity consumption by 40%; using the CO2 neutral German Postal GoGreen service; organizing in-house environmental and ecology brainstor-ming days; sending paperless faxes by computer; using only FSC certified recycled paper.

Reducing the number of empty runs also helps from this point of view. How many empty runs are saved in Europe thanks to TimoCom?According to the German highway department, in 2012, one third of all lorry trips were run empty. This cor-responds to approximately 6 million “dead” kilometres. We want to reduce this number in every way possible. Un-fortunately, I cannot provide any num-bers regarding any empty runs we may have eliminated because the platform cannot detect this information. We are only privy to the end result of a con-tract between our affiliates and to what

Founded in 1997, today TimoCom is a company with more than 400 employees in over 30 countries, with more than 450,000 international offers of exchanges and vehicles every day.

Efficient mobility, optimization of fleet-management costs, environmental protection: Pirelli shares all these objectives with TimoCom. This premise forms the basis of the collaboration between Pirelli and the German company, European leader in freight exchanges. This partnership is further confirmation of Pirelli’s desire to offer fleets not only increasingly high performance products and cutting-edge services, but also to propose tangible business solutions, worked up in collaboration with the most highly accredited companies in the heavy-transport sector.Throughout the period of the campaign, fleets that purchase Pirelli truck yres through the network of selected dealers in Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Poland can participate in the TimoCom promo and use its TC Truck&Cargo® platform free of charge for up to 11 months. The campaign will be launched at the IAA Commercial Vehicles (Hannover, 25 September-2 October 2014) For more information and to join the program, see the ‘truck & bus’ section at www.pirelli.com

extent the available space is used. Cer-tainly, it must be said that the platform primarily provides an opportunity to obtain freight capacity. Increasing the number of clients, users and offers automatically reduces the number of trips run empty.

TimoCom is also committed on the social front, with initiatives in Ger-many (DocStop, Raus aus dem Toten Winkel and St. Raphael House). What exactly do they involve? Are similar initiatives planned also for other Eu-ropean countries? As a company that focuses on the fu-ture, TimoCom also uses resources to promote social projects outside the company. We provide support for pro-grams that we feel are of particular in-terest and that are linked to our core business. An example worth mentio-ning is the cooperation with DocStop: an initiative that provides medical assistance for professional drivers, si-multaneously helping to improve road safety. As a transport sector business, we are totally committed to operations of this sort. A driver who feels ill whi-le on the road cannot simply let go of the wheel and seek a doctor. Thanks to DocStop, in Germany each month 400 drivers use this health care ser-

vice provided through a network of approximately 700 partners — cli-nics, hospitals and medical practices. Likewise, foreign drivers can use this service when in our country, recei-ving information from a call centre in 23 languages. The project will soon be extended to other European countri-es and, since 2013 four DocStop infor-mation points have been operative in Denmark, sponsored by the Danish Transport Federation.Apart from DocStop, TimoCom sup-ports a serie s of social and envi-ronmental projects. By way of exam-ple, it participates in “Raus aus dem Toten Winkel”, an initiative that go-es to German elementary schools to teach about the dangers related to traffic. The concept of environmen-tal sustainability has taken its place as part of our corporate strategy and will become increasingly important in the future.

What is the TimoCom corporate struc-ture?The entire corporate strategy is de-fined in Düsseldorf, however, we are gearing up to meet the more specific demands of the individual markets. For this reason TimoCom is focusing on different markets through the sup-

port of national teams. The members of these teams are native speakers of the local languages and are trained in our departments (particularly sales and customer services). Apart from this, TimoCom also uses professionals — such as the Country Managers — who concentrate their marketing activities on specific countries.

Can you give us a sneak preview of what the future holds for TimoCom?In 2014 we will focus above all on com-munication. This means that we will operate via mobile technology. Upon registering, using their mobile devices, our clients will have access to our pro-ducts at any time, from anywhere. And with the same degree of security offe-red by a PC. The service will be availa-ble with the transport barometer App. And, of course, there will be a fresh, eye-catching design. In the future, our offering will be expanded with exter-nally accessible warehouse exchan-ges. One thing is certain: TimoCom will not rest on its laurels, it will press on. We will continue working to offer our clients ever better, increasingly ef-ficient products and services. And wi-thout ever losing sight of simplicity. Ti-moCom is the place where freight and vehicles meet.

Founded in 1997, today TimoCom is a company with more than 400 employees in over 30 countries, with more than 450,000 international offers of exchanges and vehicles every day. The TimoCom general headquarters are in Düsseldorf.

Pirelli’s arrival in China goes back to 2005. It was, in fact, that year that the company with the “Long P” concluded a joint venture with a com-

pany in the Yanzhou district, specialised in the Truck segment, which produced ‘local for local’ and was looking for a part-ner which would help it take a step up in terms of quality. Success: in 2007, the factory started to al-so produce passenger car tyres; in 2011, steel-cord production started, and in A-pril 2012 production of motorcycle tyres was launched. “Today the Yanzhou factory covers all the Pirelli business elements. 3,300 peo-

ple work there, 30% of which in the Truck sector” explains Paolo Battistini, Industrial Manager of the Industrial Business Unit. A rapid evolution, assisted by the high-performance systems already installed and the measures adopted to align the Chinese centre with the other factori-es, which concentrated on harmonising product specifications and optimisation of the process controls to guarantee the quality of the finished product. “As regards the semi-finished products” Battistini continued, “a wire-drawing ma-chine suitable for the new products and the new mixtures was already in opera-tion The packaging machines were also of an excellent quality. Over the years,

The achievement of very high quality, environmental and safety standards has made the Pirelli Yanzhou facility exemplary in terms of best practices.

we introduced new product specifica-tions better aligned with the high perfor-mance required by the market, including SATT (Spiral Advanced Technology for Truck), which today is being reproduced in Yanzhou exactly in line with the other factories”.This was all achieved partly thanks to the presence of a Local R&S Department, which works closely with the central offi-ce, from which it receives guidelines. The Made-in-China tyres are destined not only for the Asian and Pacific markets, but also Brazil, Mexico and Europe. “And here” clarifies Paolo Battistini, “we must dispel a preconception: today the Chinese product has the same level of quality as the tyres produced in the o-ther centres. The training of the staff was fundamental to the results achieved. O-ver the years, in addition to the proces-ses and specifications, we have worked hard to train the staff, who have develo-ped a particular sensitivity towards the performance considerations of the more demanding markets, such as comfort and handling. To the extent that today, accor-ding to our quality indicators, the Chine-se factory is exemplary in terms of Pirelli best practices”. Over the years, involvement of experts has also played a key role in staff training, sharing the know-how of the other group factories with the Yanzhou factory. The Chinese factory is perfectly aligned with the others also from the point of view of quality, environmental and safe-ty certifications. “Pirelli has made commitments on va-rious fronts, starting with job safety, “ ex-plains Battistini. Upgrades have been ma-de to the machines, and we have invested

hours of training with the goal of achie-ving zero accidents. In addition, we have invested a great number of hours of trai-ning in productivity and quality, with the objective of becoming ever more compe-titive in the market”. To ensure the maximum level of quality in the outgoing products, new selection parameters have been introduced, along with the installation of new systems and specific training for the employees che-cking the finished product. What does the future hold for Pirelli Made in Chi-na? At the moment, we are focusing on optimising the Yanzhou factory, increa-singly focusing on the top-end products (01 Series).

The Truck section of the Pire-lli site has had a makeover, presented today with a new image: more dynamic, more interactive. This operation

has focused on two main goals: one: user-friendliness of the web pages, even with today’s new devices (SmartPhones, iPads, etc.) and reach a broader public. Therefore different types of contents have received a green light, making the site attractive to people with different interests (from driver to the manager, from fleet operator to tyre specialist). With particular attention paid to the multimedial aspect. Thus, the new site has two film clips showing the results of comparative testing of Fuel Cost Sav-

Video, texts, simulators to get a “hands-on” feel of how the products and services function... The restyling of the Truck & Bus section targets an increasing number of users. And to communicate with them interactively

ings and Wet Braking, and two gathering statements of operators working in vari-ous road transport sectors and in differ-ent areas around the globe. All topics and the main news are immediately visible on the homepage so you do not have to flit from one link to the next to find what you are looking for. And there’s plenty of room for interactivity. In the section dedicated to the Cyber Fleet, for example, it is pos-sible to get a “hands-on” feel of how moni-toring is performed in vehicles with tyre sensors. The simulator lets you walk in the fleet manager’s shoes, following up vehi-cle Track&Trace, checking configuration, tyre pressure and temperature monitor-ing data. It also lets you check the mileage

covered as well as any type of analysis en-visaged by the application’s reporting sys-tem, just like the fleet managers who have adopted this solution do each day.Instead, clicking “Tyre Labels” calls up a sim-ulator to test how a tyre’s energy efficiency class affects fuel economy. All this is geared to providing clear, readily understandable information, contents in line with the user’s own interests. And the Truck magazine has a space on the homepage, in a format you can leaf through: now you can read the en-tire content online, page after page. Again with a view to providing customer support, the homepage also features the modern freight exchange system developed by Ti-moCom and promoted in cooperation with Pirelli, a system that has been implemented on several markets. The new version of the site is now available in English (www.pirelli.com/tyre/gb/en/truck_bus), but by the end of the year it will be available in other lan-guages as well. The restyling goes hand-in-hand with the new international commu-nications campaign launched by Pirelli: the image features a truck in the form of a tyre which embodies two mutually reinforcing aspects — the power of the vehicle and the technology of the tyre..

Pirelli in brief

A LESSON IN SAFETY WITH POLSTRADAOn the Pirelli test track in Vizzola Ticino, it is once again time for the roadway safety event. A “refresher course”, a lesson to cover the entire year. The first to contribute is Alfredo Migliozzi, assistant Chief of Police, director of the Traffic Police of Varese, who presents the first web cartoon (there will be a total of three) produced under the auspices of a memorandum of intent between the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and Pirelli, as an initiative to promote a culture of safety. In the video, some agents flag down a family and begin checking the pressure of their tyres. The checks - Migliozzi explains - highlighted a critical situation in terms of the management of tyres in Italy: in 201330,246 offences were recorded regarding poor tyre maintenance, and 12,571 between Ja-nuary and May 2014. The tyre is the only element of the vehicle to make contact with the road. Analyses performed after serious accidents have shown that many are caused by tyres in poor condition. Pirelli has tested the difference in performance — braking and grip on both dry and wet roads — between tyres in good condition and those in poor condition. Road grip and braking varied greatly between properly inflated and underinflated tyres.

The “long P” range makes its debut at the Elmia FairPirelli made its debut this year at the Elmia Biennial Fair (Sweden)with its best products for the truck world. At the most important event of the transport sector in the Nordic countries (40.000 vi-sitors), the company with the “Long P” presented the evolution of the Series 01, the optimised line of Novateck bands and the integrated package of services and solutions to optimise the ma-nagement of the Cyber Fleets. Pirelli is therefore continuing its reinforcement strategy in the Nordic Countries, after acquiring Däckia, one of the main distribution chains for tyres in Sweden, in the summer of 2012. 2013 was a record year for Pirelli Truck sales in the area. And after one year of consolidation, 2014, a new phase of sustained growth is anticipated for 2015.

PIRELLI 2015 CALENDAR AND WHAT’S NEWNew York, May 2014. “He made us feel beautiful, important, perfect”: they all repeat the same thing. They walking down the stairs, descending from another world: the photo-shoot by Steven Meisel. They posed for the Pirelli 2015 Calendar, for him, the legendary photographer of Vogue. Here is a sneak preview of what the Pirelli 2015 Calendar will look like. Since its establishment, this calendar has glori-fied the female silhouette, but this year it promises a true and proper revolution. Code name: Candice Huffine stands 1.80 m tall, nearly 90 kg of “curvy” beauty.

WITH FAI SERVICEUNDER THE BANNER OF QUALITYPirelli has established a strategic collaboration (this agre-ement is in force in italy) with FAI Service, a leader in ser-vices for road transport, providing hauliers with the full range of support they need to carry on their daily bu-siness. The initiative stems from the wish to offer high quality services with innovative, cutting edge products, able to meet the haulier’s needs and help them optimize management of their own business expenses. FAI Servi-ce can purchase premium Pirelli products — that is the entire “01” family of products, specific for any type of use — through a network of 110 selected dealers (to view the list, log onto faiservice.it) throughout the country, offering a highly qualified service. FAI Service directly bills their members for the tyres as part of their monthly service bill, and payment is deferred by five months. In the first six months of 2014, the initiative had generated an 80% increase in sales over 2013, the year in which this colla-boration was inaugurated.

A HAMSTER AT THE WHEELHis name is Charlie, and he has become a true internet sensation. He is a ham-ster, and star of the video “The Hamster Stunt” advertising the Volvo FMX: a lorry equipped with a steering wheel that is so sensitive and easy to handle that even a small rodent can drive it. The hamster in fact, placed inside a wheel fastened to the steering wheel and motivated by a carrot

held in front of him, drove the vehicle up a very dangerous hill on a dirt road, with various hairpin turns. It all took place in a Spanish quarry. Want to see the video? Here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N87uxyDQT0

MORE SAFETY WITH VIDEO CAMERASVideo cameras on vehicles to prevent ac-cidents, overcome insurance fraud and increase safety. This is the initiative of Fondazione Ania and the Federtrasporti Group (through the Federservice Compa-ny, which handles insurance services). A pilot project has been launched, the first of its kind in Europe in the heavy transport industry, which anticipates the installation

on around 2,000 vehicles of the Roadscan Pro, a video camera equipped with accel-erometer and GPS locator, which for all in-tents and purposes becomes a “witness” capable of objectively reconstructing any accidents that may occur. The data record-ed is then transferred to a PC using an SD card or via Wi-Fi.

LORRIES AS LONG AS TRAINSYou can only see them in Australia, where the endless straight roads make such ex-tremes possible: vehicles made up of a road tractor that pulls three, four, five.... semi-trailers. They are called Road Trains and they transport merchandise from the North to the South of the country. They run especially on the Stuart Highway, the road that crosses the Australian desert, where there are no limits on the length of these convoys. The Guinness Book of World Records registers a record achieved in 2000 at Kalgoorlie: a hauler with 79 semi-trailers with a total length over one thousand metres. In 2006 in Clifton there was an attempt to assemble 112 semi-trail-ers, for a total length of 1,500 metres.

A hair-raising route around the hairpin bends... with Charlie the hamster at the wheel.

“Over the Top”, with Sylvester

Stallone as the main character.

TREASURES REDISCOVEREDA film to be rediscovered, and suitable for the whole family, is “Over the Top” (1987). The main character,

Lincoln Hawks (Sylvester Stallone), is a lorry driver who – because of his hated and controlling father-in-law who overcame him with the power of his money – gave up his treasures, leaving his wife and son.

His days are spent on the road, until a painful event (the death of his wife) forces him to take stock of his life. A long lorry trip brings him closer to his son, but before the boy finally accepts him and understands the kind of tricks his grandfather used to keep them apart, a little more time must pass. Not to mention an epic arm wrestling match on which Stallone gambles everything. Obviously there is a happy ending, when the father and son buy a new flaming lorry with the winnings and take to the road for their new life together.

No. 18 SEPTEMBER 2014 23

H uang He, more familiar to us as the Yellow River, flows placidly to-wards its estuary. The water that

flows in the province of Shandong has already travelled for over 5,000 kilome-tres and would have every right to bring its journey on the continent to a peace-ful end. But no. Even in the final section, the second largest Chinese river passes through breathtaking landscapes and cit-ies, little known to Western tourism and therefore largely very authentic. Waiting to

be discovered. A traveller with little time available must make a stop-over at Qufu, Confucius’ birthplace, still steeped in spir-ituality. Unmissable attractions include: a visit to the Temple of Confucius, where work began in the 5th century B.C. just after his death; the Kong Palace which for 77 generations was the residence of the descendants of Confucius; and the Confucian Forest where the philosopher was buried.

The province of Shandong, in the East of the country, is famous for being the birthplace of the philosopher and is still steeped in spiritualityby Ettore Pettinaroli

THE CRADLE OF MARTIAL ARTS

A visit to Shaolin is also fascinating. It is considered the cradle of Chinese

martial arts, which are depicted also on the walls of the Temple of the Little Forest (from the 5th century). Right next to the monastery a gym has been built which is the destination for enthusiasts coming from all over the world who, under the guidance of true masters, learn the moves of traditional combat. Not far from the Temple is the picturesque Pagoda Forest, with over 200 stupas.

GERMAN BEER

In the coastal city of Qingdao various neighbourhoods are characterised by

houses with a clearly Bavarian influence. The unexpected look of the area derives from around 20 years of German settlement at the beginning of the 20th century. The opening of the Tsingtao brewery goes back to that period. It is still in operation today and has become one of the principal tourist attractions of the city. A visit is not to be missed, maybe after having spent a few hours relaxing in the elegant beach clubs of the Qingdao coast.

FIRST PASS UNDER HEAVEN

In Shanhaiguan the Great Wall of China reaches the sea. The scene is rather

unexpected as we are used to seeing the powerful defensive wall running across the mountains of the interior. But the historical and symbolic value of this section is immeasurable, as the inscription reads “First Pass Under Heaven” on the eastern gate of the city. After visiting the Museum of the Great Wall, there are 4 kilometres to travel into the interior, where the fortification rises on its first hill. The ascent is steep, but there is even a cable car available for the less athletic.

In Shandong Province there is also the Taishan, the most venerated of the five sacred mountains of Taoism in China. It takes eight hours to climb to the sum-mit, but you can just visit the sumptuous Dai Temple, dedicated to the God of the Mountain and located in the city of Tai’An where the climb begins. You have to push to the western end of the province to ad-mire the Longmen Grottoes: there are 1300 and inside there are 40 pagodas and more than 100,000 Buddhist statues and sacred images.
