Chairman’s Foreword
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is delighted to publish the British Horseracing Fact Book 2011/12, which we hope will prove an invaluable and informative guide to some of the key numbers behind our great sport.
We have not published such a full range of data in this format for a number of years now but, with statistics up to and including the most recent Jump season, it serves as a timely reminder of both the great strengths but also the challenges facing British Racing.
The positives are unarguable. We continue to stage some of the very best racing there is, and are synonymous with quality. We attract the finest equine athletes from across the world to our racecourses, as well as producing and nurturing them at home in our breeding and training centres. In Frankel we are lucky to be witnessing the very epitome of the thoroughbred, and no-one who has seen his brilliance first-hand will forget the experience. Certain batons are perhaps being passed on within Jump Racing, but the longevity of our superstars has allowed for a sustained golden period for the sport.
And while one of our chief consumer-facing metrics – raceday attendances – is in healthy, indeed record shape, many of our underlying indicators have slipped back significantly from their peaks of a number of years ago. Ownership levels, horses in training, breeding activity: the inadequacies of our own central funding mechanism have exacerbated the inevitable effects of
the domestic and global recession to significant effect, and the contrast at the heart of our sport has perhaps never been greater.
When the numbers within these pages collectively add up to an industry generating billions of pounds for the British economy, direct and indirect full-time employment measured in the tens of thousands and an enormous impact in local communities, the imperative and incentive to turn the corner could not be clearer.
We are all committed to putting the sport on a sounder financial footing through new partnerships both within the sport’s internal structures, and externally with our core customers including of course the British betting industry. We do so in the knowledge that our foundations remain the envy of many: we have an enduring, and rejuvenated, public appeal, an unrivalled infrastructure of celebrated and diverse racecourses, and horsemen of supreme talent and passion.

Anglo-Irish Jump Classifications 2011/12
King Kauto reigns supremeFor the fourth time in six seasons the British and Irish handicappers assessed the great Kauto Star (FR) [180] as the highest rated Jumps horse in training in the 2011/12 season. A figure of 180 achieved by beating long Run (FR) [178] in the William hill King George vi Chase means that he reclaims his crown from long Run himself, who topped the rankings last year.
Kauto Star has now been a champion on a remarkable seven occasions, as he was top Two-and-a-half Mile Chaser in both 2006-7 and 2007-8 as well as being top Two Mile Chaser in 2006-7 when he became as yet the only horse to be champion at all three chasing distances.
Meanwhile, for the fourth consecutive year Big Buck’s (FR) [174] was the best Hurdler at any distance in Britain and Ireland. No matter what tactics his opponents use Big Buck’s shows himself to be ‘the special one’. His best performance in 2011-12 season was in the Rewards4Racing Cleeve hurdle where he gave dynaste (FR) [161] 4lbs and a comfortable seven length beating.
World Thoroughbred Rankings 2011
A vintage year for British Racing2011 will be remembered as an exceptional year in Global Horseracing, marked by two truly outstanding performers in the British-trained three year old miler colt Frankel (GB) [136] and the older Australian sprinting mare Black Caviar (AuS) [132]. Both horses remained undefeated, untouchable and true Champions.
Frankel won five races, four of which were Group 1s, with his best rating of 136 being achieved when he defeated champion older miler Canford Cliffs (iRe) [127] by no less than five lengths in the QiPCo Sussex Stakes (G1) at Glorious Goodwood. His most visually-arresting performance was when he sensationally spread-eagled the field from the start in the QiPCo 2000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket. His rating of 136 marked him out as the joint top rated colt, along with crack Irish colt Sea the Stars (iRe) (2009), since the World Thoroughbred Rankings (WTR) were instituted in 2004.
Black Caviar achieved a rating of 132 as a result of her astonishingly dominant weight-carrying performance in the lexus Newmarket handicap (G1), which she won eased down by three lengths from the cream of Australia’s sprinters, who were in receipt of considerable weight allowances. All in all, she won no less than six Group 1 races and two Group 2 races during 2011 and she surpassed So you think (NZ) [126] (2010) as the highest-rated Australasian horse since the inauguration of WTR in 2004.
Of the top ten rated horses in the World, six were trained in Great Britain, and eight of these top ten performances were seen on British Racecourses.

“Kauto Star’s return to the pinnacle
of Jump racing is a truly remarkable story. At this time last year we were speculating
whether Long Run’s assent to the top of the ratings was the mark
of a shift in the balance of power from the old guard to the young
pretenders. Kauto had other ideas though.”

The Exclusive Figures show a more precise breakdown of ownership types by which each owner with horses in training is categorised in only one of the categories.

Clifford Baker crowned employee of the year at Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards 2012Clifford Baker was named ‘Employee of the Year’ at the eighth annual Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards Ceremony, which took place at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in London’s Knightsbridge.
The Head Lad, employed by Paul Nicholls, was presented with the perpetual Godolphin Trophy by Guest Presenter Paul Hanagan. In addition to the stunning trophy, Clifford was also presented with a cheque for a staggering £25,000, of which £10,000 will be shared amongst the staff at Nicholls’ Yard.
The awards were presented by dual Champion Jockey Paul Hanagan at a glittering ceremony.
About the AwardsRun by the BHA in conjunction with the Racing Post, the Awards are the richest of their kind in the world with £120,000 in prize money generously donated by Godolphin. The Ceremony sees a specially-invited audience from across the Racing Industry gather to celebrate the fundamental role that Stud and Stable Staff play within the sport.
Unique in the sporting world, the awards repay the efforts of those behind the scenes who work tirelessly and with love and devotion to the horses in their care to make the sport tick.
Each individual category winner collects £5,000, with their colleagues at their respective Stable or Stud also sharing £5,000 between them. The two runners-up in
each category receive £2,000, with their Yard or Stud also collecting the same amount. The winner of the separate NASS Special Merit Award, judged by the NASS Executive, receives an individual prize of £5,000.
The Awards were judged by a panel comprising celebrated Author and Journalist Brough Scott (Chairman); Dinah Nicholson, wife of the late David Nicholson, himself a former Champion Trainer; David Redvers, Bloodstock Agent; Pat Eddery, three-time Derby winner and eleven-time Champion Jockey; Ian Balding, former Champion Trainer; and Judith Allen, Executive Director of the British Horseracing and Education Standards Trust.
